Welcome to St. André’s Parish! No matter who you are, where you’ve come from, or what brings you here, we’re so glad to have you with us. St. André Bessette (1845-1937) spent much of his life serving as the door-keeper of his religious community; like him, we strive to open doors for our neighbors to experi-ence the loving mercy of God. May Jesus fill your heart with his grace and peace!

From Fr. Joe…

When recently looking for something in the parish archives, I noticed a stack of colorful newsletters entitled, “Campaign Chronicle.” They were weekly reports distributed to parishioners concerning a 1960 fund drive in Notre Dame Parish. Week after week, the list of donors (and what they gave) grew and grew. The result? Between May 23rd and July 17th—just 8 weeks—they raised $224,899. Accounting for inflation, that would be about $1.9 million today. Amazing! And more than 50 years later, we continue to reap the benefits of their generosity. The Diocese of Ogdensburg is now in the midst of a diocesan-wide capital campaign: “It’s Our Church, It’s Our Fu-ture.” Our parish goal is $611,648. Of that amount, $39,892 is our 2018 Bishop‟s Fund goal. (The Bishop‟s Fund will not be taken up separately in 2018; but don‟t worry, it will be back in 2019.) Of the remainder, 25% is going to diocesan needs—specifically, the care of our retired priests, the education of our seminarians, improvements at Camp Guggenheim, and much needed repairs at St. Mary‟s Cathedral. The remaining 75%—which is $428,817 if we reach our goal, and more if we surpass it—stays right here at St. André‟s. I thought our assigned parish goal seemed rather high—out of reach, even…until I saw what they did in 1960. You know what they say: History has a way of repeating itself. This is when you expect me to ask for something—which is cor-rect. But I‟m not asking you for money. (Not yet, any-way. That‟ll start next month.) In order to make this a campaign worth supporting, we need to know what we‟d be spending that money on. Since it‟s a capital campaign, we‟re looking at capital projects: big ticket, nuts-and-bolts work that needs to be done. There are some things that necessarily rise to the top of the list—for example, Notre Dame Church and the rectory both need new roofs…and soon! But what else? That’s where you come in! What needs do you see? What are your priorities? Your hopes and dreams for our parish? Your input will be immensely helpful to St. André‟s Campaign Committee as we make our case in the months ahead. Please think about it and take a few minutes to fill out the little card located in the bulletin. We look forward to hearing from you! This past year has been a particularly topsy-turvy one, and I des-perately need a break for some rest and relaxation. That‟s not an easy thing to work out when you‟re the only priest in town. You‟ll see a few gaps in the Mass schedule this coming week. I‟m working on some plans that will allow me to get away, but they aren‟t yet complete as this bulletin goes to print. Stay tuned… Visit Fr. Joe's blog: http://fromemptyhands.blogspot.com/

Sharing the Good News with the North Country Catholic

A thoughtful suggestion from a parishion-er: “Perhaps those who already subscribe [to the North Country Catholic] could put their „gently used‟ issue on a table for those who would like to read it, but the subscription is out of their budget.”

"There are three kinds of giving: grudge giving says, I have to; duty giving says, I ought to; thanksgiving says, I want to. The first comes from constraint; the second from a sense of obligation; the third from a full heart." Rev. Robert Rodenmayer

Sacrament of Baptism Parents who wish to have a child baptized should contact Rev. Joseph Giroux to make arrangements for the date and for a program of preparation. Parents are highly encour-aged to make arrangements at least three months before the child is born, as the Catholic Church encourages Baptism for infants as soon as possible after birth. Adults and older children (seven years or older) interested in Baptism or en-tering into full communion with the Catholic Church should inquire about the program of preparation (R.C.I.A.: the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Sacrament of Matrimony A Catholic wishing to be married in one of our churches should contact one of the priests at least six months prior to the desired date in order to begin making arrangements. A program of preparation is required. The parish should be contacted before any other plans are made—for example, the wedding reception. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick For those preparing for surgery, nursing home residents, or the homebound, contact one of the parish priests to make arrangements to be anointed. For those in the hospital (especially in the event of an emergency), ask the hospital staff to contact the priest on call.
