IZA carries out basic research in close cooperation withthe Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and itsFaculty of Law and Economics. Funding by Deutsche PostWorld Net facilitated the foundation of the Bonn GraduateSchool of Economics (BGSE) in 1998, which continues thelong-standing doctoral program at the University of Bonn. The Graduate School enables selected Ph.D. candidates tocarry out intensive, focused studies, including severalmonths of residence at a research institute abroad. IZAtakes part in the selection and supervision of students andoffers courses within the framework of the BGSE program.IZA Director Klaus F. Zimmermann is member of the boardof directors of the Bonn Graduate School of Economics.

Since October 2000, the Deutsche Forschungsgemein-schaft (DFG) has sponsored a new “GraduiertenkollegQuantitative Ökonomie” (a graduate-level program inquantitative economics) jointly with the state of North-rhine-Westphalia. The Graduiertenkolleg operates as a subsection of the Bonn Graduate School of Economics.

IZA cooperates with the University of Bonn in the organi-zation of joint events such as the Bonn EconomicsResearch Seminar, with the participation of the economicsbranch of the Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI).

Authorized IZA staff may supervise diploma theses, disser-tations, or postdoctoral lecturing qualifications(Habilitationen) of economics students at the University ofBonn. IZA’s library with its specialization in labor econo-mics is generally open to students of the University ofBonn as a reference library.

The successful cooperation between IZA and theUniversity of Bonn is proof of a fruitful cooperation ofpublic and privately sponsored research and educationinstitutions.

IZA’s Guest Researchers Program aims at encouragingscientific exchange between internationally renownedresearchers and young economists. Guest researchersspend some time at IZA to discuss recent results of labormarket research and to continue their own research pro-jects. This form of scientific exchange has attracted manytop researchers to IZA and its research activities. It is the-refore an important complement to the institute’s work.
