Services Division Solutions Bulletin
A MISTRAS Think-Tank fuses the on-line, in-service Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring of TankPAC™ and other advanced NDT inspection technologies with the Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) Services and Solutions.
Combining MISTRAS’ advanced nondestructive testing (NDT) systems and services, Think-Tank users get a global solution that can help ensure the structural and operational integrity, as well as the API 653 compliance, of their aboveground storage tanks – turning formerly static assets, into dynamic MISTRAS Think-Tanks.
Why NoN-INtrusIve INspectIoNs?Many outdated RBI programs are use historical data, original fabrication and inspection documents, and modification reports to build risk assessment and inspection protocols. These old-fashioned inspection models exclude current tank conditions, environmental factors, and use inefficient calendar-based inspection intervals. MISTRAS’ in-service inspection capabilities source data from current tank condition, determining the appropriateness of inspection intervals, degradation conditions, and development of non-intrusive inspection programs. The advantages of non-intrusive inspections offer:
• No interruption to tank service or condition• Cost savings from avoiding tank openings• Improved safety & quick inspection results• Planned internal inspection strategies
Non-intrusive inspections help maintain a tank’s condition, helping owners and operators meet regulatory requirements, and extend inspection intervals though cost-saving risk assessments. Non-intrusive inspection techniques also help tank operators determine the appropriateness of tests, validate a tank’s RBI program, improve a tank’s mechanical integrity (MI), and determine the appropriate intervals for internal inspections.
Methods MISTRAS offers a variety of traditional and advanced NDT methods (as recommended by the American Petroleum Institute (API)) to inspect a tank’s outer shell for damage and corrosion. By applying AE testing, ultrasonic testing (UT) thickness measurements, and visual tests (VT) along the tank’s shell, annular ring, floor, and roof, tank operators can fully optimize a tank’s inspection program, benefitting from real-time structural evaluations and condition assessments using MISTRAS’ advanced inspection technology.
TankPAC’s™ ANDT methods includes on-line AE testing with externally mounted transducers on tanks for accurate tank floor, annular ring corrosion, and leak inspections. After a MISTRAS TankPAC™ AE examination, the tank is assigned a composite grade, providing qualitative data indicating propagation of active corrosion or possible tank floor leaks.
Grades are based on empirical data, comparing TankPAC™ to out of service inspections gathered from thousands of tank inspections and

validated through user groups along with many multinational oil & gas companies.
Using these results, tank owners and operators can determine when to open tanks for decontamination and internal inspections.
TankPAC™ annular ring inspections utilize AE testing and MISTRAS’ advanced AE software solutions, providing tank operators with plot diagrams, illustrating the location where potential damage is occurring. Annular ring inspection results also identify areas of the tank for follow up Ultrasonic (UT) and ANDT inspections. MISTRAS also offers additional

tankpAc™ + rBI services = think-tankANDT methods like UT shear wave, Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMATS), guided bulk wave & Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) techniques, used to test the entire annular ring.
For larger areas, like the tank’s shell and roof, AUT automatically maneuvers Ultrasonic thickness transducers over a predetermined area of the tank, collecting and recording thickness readings, transferred to our proprietary UT software. The result is a color-coded display of tank wall thickness – an extremely useful visual representation of your tank condition, thinning areas, and locations of corrosion.
A focused RBI program manages the risk associated with operating assets like above ground storage tanks. By managing that risk and implementing a RBI program supported by TankPAC’s™ real-time condition reports and MISTRAS’ non-intrusive inspection methods, tank owners and operators are now able to effectively address compromised sections of a tank’s MI program.
Supplemental RBI programs can help extend inspection intervals of tanks in good condition between one and five years, as well as reduce intervals for tanks operating in poor condition.
By extracting powerful and valuable results from the fusion of non-intrusive AE testing, TankPAC™ monitoring, MISTRAS’ ANDT methods and RBI programs, tank operators are able to develop suitable risk metrics for real-time condition and inspection data.
This synergy produces a global solution for in-service, real-time Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring of your tank condition with an integrated plan to identify and prioritize high-risk assets along with inspection dates, risk thresholds and potential lifecycle extension.
As a smart, active asset, a MISTRAS Think-Tank fuses the AE monitoring strengths of TankPAC™ with global RBI methodologies in our Plant Condition Management Software (PCMS®) to enable API 653 Compliance and help ensure the structural and operational integrity of your aboveground storage tanks.

pLANt coNdItIoNING MANAGeMeNt systeM™TankPAC™ operates in conjunction with the Plant Conditioning Management Software (PCMS®), utilized in refineries, chemical plants, production/exploration and designed to manage inspection information for above ground storage tanks (AST), piping, pressure vessels and other equipment.
PCMS™ offers tremendous advantages through its ability to organize, link and synchronize information enabling thorough evaluation of the results. PCMS™ provides the economic tools to budget and plan long term maintenance strategies. PCMS™ also increases can identify a problem for one or an entire fleet of tanks before a failure occurs, minimizing unplanned shutdowns and costly downtime periods.
thINK-tANKMISTRAS Think-Tank provides a strategic combination of advanced NDT solutions, turning a static, passive AST into a dynamic, active Think-Tank. By optimizing a tank’s on-stream inspection program without altering the risk of tank failure, the Think-Tank program helps ensure the proper operational decisions are made to determine internal inspection schedules, identify areas of active corrosion, leaks, and optimize the useful life of a tank.
