READING VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED Several more reading volunteers are needed in order to successfully continue running the Volunteer Reading Program. This program provides additional support for students who need one-to-one programs. Just one hour a week of your time would give 2-3 students an additional session per week. Please contact the school office and leave your contact details if you are interested.

RYDE EAST NATURAL ENVIRONMENT GROUP As the next step in our work with Birdlife Australia, last week we took part in a video conference between the Birdlife Centre at Newington Armory, and other schools in our district. During the conference we presented the data from our observations at our own school.

Birdlife Australia co-ordinator of the project, Elizabeth Noble, really enjoyed seeing the children present the information as it was done with some imaginative drama presentations.

The next step is for us to develop our action plan to improve the school’s habitat value based on interpretations of the data.

Already identified and discussed during the conference, are problems with playground rubbish. Open bins and lunch boxes attract scavenging birds

and these often chase or prey upon other more desirable types of birds. Plastic wrappings are also a concern, as bits of plastic are swallowed by some birds which then choke or become ill. In some cases birds collect bits of plastic and then feed them to the young birds in their nest.

It was gratifying to hear that we do already have many appropriate plants and trees in our grounds and many of the seedlings planted on National Tree Day this year will be beneficial to the more desirable smaller native birds.

The children in our Natural Environment Group are to be congratulated for their efforts. With the ongoing guidance provided by Birdlife Australia and support from everyone in our school community, we look forward to being able to make improvements in the habitat value of our school grounds.

P&C MUSIC PROGRAM NEWS MUSIC LESSON CLASHES There are a number of events in the

coming weeks that may see some students missing music lessons. These include the Zone Athletics Carnival on Thurs 28 August and the Ryde Spectacular Choir Rehearsal on Thurs 11 Sept. Please let your instrument contact parent know if your child is involved in these activities and will be away that day. They will attempt to reschedule lessons, but may need to cancel them if alternate arrangements can’t be made, so the more notice we have to prepare for this the better. Contact details are below.

EISTEDDFOD SUCCESS A big congratulations to Emma in 3/4SF for her recent terrific performance at the Ryde Eisteddfod. Emma performed on recorder in the 10 years and under Woodwind Solo category and even though she was competing against much older competitors received a 2nd Place award. Well Done Emma! This comes hot on the heels of her recent Opera House performance, where she was selected to perform a solo at the Festival of Instrumental Music. Emma is

the youngest soloist in the Festival’s history, and performed accompanied by the composer himself and over 800 other students from around the state. This was a truly phenomenal effort. Congratulations on an amazing few months!
