When Fan Li resigned his post and went into hiding in the lakes, he obtained this hexagram and knew that the Kingdom of Yuwould soon perish.


A noble (high ranking, influential) man is bestowing a dress (piece of cloth). Aman kneeling receives it. He relies on the noble (influential) man for his clothes and salary. The wild goose carries a letter in the clouds. The letter arrives. A man is riding a tiger, which means he is in danger.

He receives good fortune in danger. The tiger runs away, which is a sign of scattering in fright.

King Wen's Judgment: The Xun hexagram signifies success in small matters. It is a favorable time to take action [havesomewhere to go, undertake something] and to see a great person.

Symbol Tradition: The double Xun trigram signifies Wind. The superior man first reiterates [repeats, reaffirms] his orders andthen motivates activity and influences events [executes affairs, puts them into effect].

Confucius: The yin line is the key figure of the hexagram, thus the oracle says there will be success in small matters. The yinfollows the yang, so it is a favorable time to take action. He knows what to follow. It is a favorable time to see a great man.

Nine at the second line: He gets to the bottom of problems and then takes effective measures to solve them all. There will begood fortune without any blame.

This line indicates that he gets to know the essence as a minister, so the divination means well.

For an individual of great virtue and merit, the individual has great virtue with a talent for discrimination. He treats people withmodesty, and is prominent for his fame and contributions. He enjoys a high position and title. He is a respected man, withmany signs for good fortune, such as the two words ("shi wu") that may signify a grand historian or an imperial secretary. Alsothe Chinese word ("zhong") connotes an official of personnel, a second ranking secretary, a secretary for imperial decrees, ora secretary general and the like.

For just an ordinary individual, the individual can only engage in a minor profession possibly as a sorcerer, a Buddhist, or aTaoist. He has too many wishes, and cannot dedicate himself to and succeed in one profession.

In such a year, an official will receive promotion, if not as a an advisor, then he will work in the national archives. A scholarwins fame, and a commoner moves people with his sincerity and realizes his ambitions. If it is ominous, there will be asacrificial ceremony by a sorcerer.
