     AGREE/ DISAGREE (RYAN)

Technology is becoming increasingly prevalent in the world today.Given time, technology will completely replace the teacher in theclassroom. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

In today’s world, the use of technology is ever-increasing. Even inclassrooms technology can be commonly seen. It is disagreed thattechnology will completely replace the teacher in the classroom.

Analyzing both the inability of a technology-driven teacher to disciplinestudents in a classroom as well as this robotic teacher’s hindrance to astudent’s learning process will show this.

Firstly, a teacher powered by artificial intelligence would have little to nocontrol over its students. For example, it is commonly understood that

children require the watchful eye of a teacher to ensure that they areindeed completing their class work and not fooling around during classtime. Unfortunately this is something that a robotic teacher simply cannotprovide. Thus this makes it clear why technology will never completelyreplace the teacher in the classroom.

Secondly, a robotic teacher would disrupt a student’s learning processand in effect slow a student’s ability to absorb information from lessons. For instance, kids require motivation to be taught effectively. Such is a

quality human teachers possess but technologically driven instructor donot. From this it becomes quite evident that robotic instructors will never take the place of real teachers in a classroom.

In summary, a robotic teacher lacks the discipline needed to instructstudents properly and actually operates to retard a student’s ability tolearn new information. Thus it is clear why the idea of having a class runentirely by a machine cannot be supported. After analyzing this subject, itis predicted that the negative aspects of the debate over computerized

teaching will forever be stronger than the positive ones and because of this computers will never replace teachers. (276)

    DISCUSSION (RYAN)

Techno logy is becom ing increasing ly prevalent in the wo r ld today.

Given t ime, techno logy wi l l completely replace the teacher in th e

classroom. Analyze both sides of th is argum ent .

In today’s world, the use of technology is ever-increasing. Even inclassrooms technology can be commonly seen. The argument thattechnology will completely replace the teacher in the classroom is asubject that is both supported and refuted by many. Both sides of thisargument will be analyzed before a reasoned conclusion is drawn.

Firstly it is easy to see the progressive rate at which technology is able tomimic both the physical and mental abilities of human beings. For example, the Honda robot Asimov can today move its body and

manipulate objects with human-like precision. Therefore the possibility of robotic teachers in the future truly becomes a plausible outcome giventime. Because of this it is easy to see why the argument that technologycould replace human teachers in the classroom has garnered support.

However on the other side of this argument it must be remembered that ateacher powered by artificial intelligence would have little to no controlover its students. For example, it is commonly understood that childrenrequire the watchful eye of a teacher to ensure that they are indeed

completing their class work and not fooling around during class time.Unfortunately this is something that a robotic teacher simply cannotprovide. Thus this makes it clear why the argument that technology willnever completely replace the teacher in the classroom could also beplausible.

In summary, both sides of the argument regarding the possibility of atechnologically driven classroom have strong support. However after analyzing both camps it is clear that the idea of having a class run entirely

by a machine cannot be supported. As such, it is predicted that thenegative aspects of the debate over computerized teaching will forever bestronger than the positive ones and because of this computers will never replace teachers. (302)

     AGREE DISAGREE (TAHASONI)

Every year several langu ages die out. Som e people think th at this is no t

imp ortant because l i fe wi l l be easier i f there are fewer languages in the wor ld .

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion ?

I do not think the fact that fewer and fewer languages remain in use every

year is an important matter as it leads people to live more easily andcomfortably.

One reason is that communication in most cases becomes easier. It willbe really convenient if one can talk with others from various parts of theworld without the need for a live translator or special software for assistance. This means that different nations around the globe are likelyto be able to cooperate more closely if fewer languages are in use. For instance, a conference at the United Nations will be more convenient and

productive for politicians if they all can communicate using a limited set of languages, or perhaps even one, instead of having to wait for translations. Consequently, better results are likely to be achieved morequickly, and many issues could be resolved as a result of better mutualunderstanding.

Furthermore, there will be less need to spend time learning manylanguages for different purposes. At the moment, one needs to learnvarious languages to study in a different country travel abroad or communicate with foreign friends. However, if only a few languages werein use around the globe, travelers, immigrants and students at foreignuniversities could all focus their efforts on their goals without having toworry about their language proficiency.

In conclusion, I believe that the fall in the number of languages in useallows people to communicate more easily, as well as focusing their energy on more important aims and purposes. (257)

    DISCUSSION (TAHASONI)

Some people th ink secondary school students should study in ternat ional

news as one of the i r sub jects . Other people say th is is a waste of valuable

school t im e. Discuss both these views and give your own opin ion.

Today, learning about the news from different parts of the world is

essential to many people, and it has been suggested that internationalnews should become a high school subject.

Some educationalists argue that reviewing global news is vital for highschool students as it would definitely improve their general knowledge inareas like geography. This is because the news come from around theworld and often present significant details about different regions andtheir features, which means students would possibly gain a better understanding of the world. It also seems that studying the news candevelop the students’ ability to analyse sophisticated situations becausewhen they follow a story, say, about a political rift between two countries, they could observe how it develops or escalates, how the parties involvedact and what its consequences are.

However, another group believes that the violence portrayed in many of today’s news stories could affect students’ conduct. For instance, almostevery newspaper and news website these days is filled with images and

stories of the ISIS executions in Iraq and Syria, which are likely to makeyoungsters feel insecure or make unreasonable judgments about any Arab friends they might have. Furthermore, reading and analysing thenews would probably be a time consuming activity, as a result of whichinsufficient time may remain for more important subjects and activities likesciences, math or physical education.

Personally, I believe teaching global news at high schools could helpstudents become better thinkers and analysts, so it is beneficial unless

insufficient time remains for more important subjects. However, it isimportant that only proper news are chosen by experts so that pupils arenot exposed to violent content. (281)

     ADVANTAGEOUS / DISADVANTAGEOUS

Some parents buy their children a large number of toys to play with. What are the advantages and disadvantages for the child of having a largenumber of toys?

Nowadays, a lot of toys are provided for some children by their parents.

These toys range from simple ones like dolls to complicated electronicgadgets like video games.

One of the important advantages for children who have lots of toys is thatthere are different options for them to play with. Therefore, they canchoose one of their toys according to their mood and taste, and are lesslikely to get bored. Apart from this, they would certainly be able to learn awider variety of skills like problem solving or organization. The reason isthat different toys can teach them different things, which means that themore toys they have, the more they are likely to learn.

On the other hand, having a lot of different toys could possibly lead tochildren becoming overweight since many modern toys like video gamesand Legos, which are very common these days, are designed for indoors. Therefore, they would definitely result in less physical activity and childrenwho play with them might gain extra weight.

Furthermore, when kids have too many toys, it is likely that they will takeless care of them. In other words, they will probably not learn to valuethem if there is always a replacement ready to play with. Consequently, they would certainly not learn to appreciate their belongings.

Personally, I believe that children should only have a few toys of greatquality that they really love. This could allow them to learn to appreciatewhat they have and avoid physical problems like obesity. (257)

    CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levelsof health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures couldbe taken to solve them?

Traditionally, most citizens in different parts of the world were in shapeand quite slim whereas today it is quite common for people to beoverweight or obese. Consequently, diseases like diabetes and highblood pressure are widespread and many individuals are unfit.

A reason is that almost everyone either drives or takes public transport towork or school. As a result, there has been a serious decline in mostpeople’s levels of physical activity which has led them to burn fewer calories and gain weight. Another reason could be the overconsumption

of fast food which is very common these days. For instance, acheeseburger usually contains a lot of calories and greasy ingredientssuch as cheese and oil. This means that eating a lot of cheeseburgerswould definitely have negative effects on blood fat and increase people’sweight.

A possible solution to improve people’s health and fitness is to increasetheir daily physical activity, for example through walking to work if theylive close to their workplaces, jogging in the morning or evening and

having regular exercise at the gym once or twice a week. In addition, publicity campaigns could be launched against obesity so that people areinformed of the dangers of a high-calorie diet. For example, posters couldbe designed that illustrate how back pain results from obesity. This woulddefinitely encourage many to control their calorie intake.

In conclusion, the decline in health and fitness and increase in the weightof many people in various countries owes mainly to a lack of physicalactivity and the high consumption of fast food. However, these problemscan be dealt with if people increase their daily physical activity and areinformed of the dangers of eating too much. (289)

    POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE

In som e parts of the wor ld i t is becom ing po pular to research the history of

one 's own fami ly .

Why m ight people want to do this ? Is i t a po si t ive or negat ive development?

Genealogy is not a new field and people, especially the noble class, have

always been keen on knowing more about the history of their families andancestors. However, it has recently enjoyed more popularity with manyordinary people, especially in the western world, trying to fill in the gaps in their family trees; a trend I personally disapprove of.

One reason why many people are curious about their family history these daysis that it is often fun to trace back one’s bloodline and find out if one is relatedto any famous people. I remember a recent story about how a commonsupermarket clerk in Nevada was discovered to be a descendant of a British

king. Many such descendants live completely ordinary lives, to which adiscovery like that can bring many thrills. Additionally, it would definitely helppeople to realise how their families have changed through the years andtherefore, learn a thing or two about the causes of failure and prosperity indifferent generations.

However, many individuals who find themselves related to the nobility tend toconsider tiny shares of noble blood as birthright to more respect. They, for instance, often demand seats in public transport when there are moredeserving people like pregnant women or the elderly aboard. Apart from that,

some of them might over generalise the role of factors which have contributedto a former generation’s condition, be it inherited wealth or even bad luck, totheir own and disregard the value of their own ideas, efforts and current status.(88 words)

In conclusion, I am not sure if the growing trend towards researching one’sancestors and family line is actually helping people and the society in general, and believe it must be discouraged. (32 words)
