The SML R Gonfalonby John Burton Jr., Professor Emeritus

Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations

The gonfalon (located on the platform) for the School of Management and Labor

Relations was designed to symbolize the mission of the school: to improve the

relationship between management and labor in order to serve the public. The three

colors used throughout the gonfalon represent the three parties interested in constructive

employment relations: labor (red), management (blue), and the public (gold).

The inner set of triangles represents the common and sometimes ineffective interaction

between labor and management and the consequences for the public. The shades of

red, blue, and gold in the inner triangles are muted and dark. The role of the School

of Management and Labor Relations is to improve the relationship. The School’s

contributions to the better relationship between management and labor and ultimately

to the benefit of the public is symbolized by the multi-pointed explosion of gold that

lies behind the triangles. The result of the school’s contributions to the improved

relationship between the participants in employment relations and to the public is

shown in the outer set of triangles. The shades of blue, red, and gold in the outer

triangles are bright and vivid.

The gonfalon was created in 1994 when the Institute of Management and Labor

Relations was transformed into the School of Management and Labor Relations. Dean

John Burton, Associate Dean Steven Director, and Assistant Dean Betty Lou Heffernan

were responsible for the concept and general design of the gonfalon. Kevin Rau, a

graphic artist and the husband of Assistant Professor Barbara Rau, helped translate the

concept into the final design.

Guest Speaker:Aaron Fichtner, Acting Commissioner, New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development

Aaron R. Fichtner, Ph.D. was appointed Acting Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development by Governor Chris Christie on September 23, 2016. He previously served as Deputy Commissioner, directly overseeing the department’s program areas including Workforce Operations and Business Services; Workforce Development and Economic Opportunity; Research and Information;

Income Security; and Labor Standards and Safety Enforcement. Before joining the department in 2010, Dr. Fichtner was the Director of Research and Evaluation at the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University. Dr. Fichtner currently serves as Chair of the National Association of State Liaisons for Workforce Development Partnerships, an affiliate of the National Governors Association. Dr. Fichtner earned a Ph.D. in Planning and Public Policy from Rutgers University, a Master’s degree in City Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a B.A. in History from Vassar College.

Meet the Student SpeakersRan Zhang is receiving her master’s in human resource management. She is the Co-President of the RU SHRM Graduate Chapter and she was a TA for two undergraduate classes of statistics in HR. Outside of school, Ran’s experience in HR includes serving as a Global HRLDP summer intern at IBM, HR Recruitment Intern at United Nations Women based in Manhattan, Recruitment Process Outsourcing analyst at Manpower, and HR generalist at Walmart in Beijing. She was also a Business Consultant for 180 Degrees Consulting in New York in 2015. She will join IBM’s Global HR Leadership Development Program as a full-time employee after graduation. Her first rotation will be Social Engagement Analytics in North Carolina. She is appreciative and thankful to the Rutgers Community and plans to bring all she has learned to her future career pursuits.

Mariah Painter is honored to be receiving her master’s of labor and employment relations from Rutgers University, where she also completed a bachelor of arts in english. She grew up in St. Petersburg, Pennsylvania and graduated from Allegheny-Clarion Valley Jr./Sr. High School. At Rutgers, Mariah has been involved with United Students Against Sweatshops Local 109. She took part in their campaign against Nike and their fight to enact a $15 minimum wage for all campus workers. Mariah also volunteers with New Labor, a New Brunswick-based worker center. Mariah is moving to Pittsburgh in May to begin her career with the Service Employees International Union - Healthcare Pennsylvania division as a Member Resource Center Representative. There, she will be a resource for union members and organizers, helping to file grievances and giving advice on workplace concerns and union related questions.

Anna Baid is pleased to be receiving her bachelor’s degree with a double major in human resource management and psychology. She attended high school in both Highland Park and East Brunswick, New Jersey and enrolled in Rutgers University after earning her associate degree from Middlesex County College. Anna has been consistently present on the Dean’s List at Rutgers and has had the privilege of getting to know many of the faculty members at the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations. She is continuing on to the master of human resource management degree program and currently has the privilege of working alongside Dr. Charles Fay as his teaching assistant for the undergraduate compensation course. Anna will be interning with Honeywell this summer at their corporate headquarters in Morris Plains, New Jersey, focusing on Talent Management and Staffing. She hopes to continue to their full-time rotational program after graduation. Her ultimate career goal is to spark innovation in the field and develop unique solutions to future, key issues in Human Resources.

Christian Berk is receiving his bachelor of arts degree in labor studies and employment relations and has been a member of the labor relations community here at Rutgers since 2013, when he transferred to pursue his passion for economic justice – a passion that grew out of his experiences organizing with the Occupy movement. Not only has Christian been a diligent student, he has worked night shifts at a local grocery store throughout his time at Rutgers. Christian is a core organizer with Rutgers United Students Against Sweatshops, and spent this past summer as the Rutgers Goldstein Intern with the Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO, working on communications, organizing, and mobilization. Next year, he will be working toward a master of labor and employment relations degree.

Honor CordsThe baccalaureate degree is conferred summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude for students achieving honors in the overall program of study at Rutgers University. These students will have gold cords to adorn their regalia. Undergraduate students of the Labor Studies and Employment Relations program achieving highest honors, high honor and honors in the major have white cords to adorn their regalia.

James R. Chelius Teaching AwardThe James R. Chelius Award was created in memory of Jim Chelius, a beloved teacher, scholar, and mentor in the Department of Human Resource Management. HRM students nominate an award recipient, and the selection is made with the consent of the HRM faculty. This year’s recipient is Joseph McCune.
