A New Town: Timeless Urbanism on the Moscow River
Our concept is a city in the architectural style of old European cities like Prague, Amsterdam and Munich
Viktor Novichkov, Project Director
Rublyovo-Archangelskoye is located to the west of Moscow on the Novo-Riga Highway. The greenfield site is subject to flooding as it sits on a bend of the Moscow River, next to an oxbow lake that marks the historic course.
The brief was to create a new town to support a future population of 20,000 people with a variety of housing; community, retail, sports and entertainment facilities; parks and open spaces; a school; medical centre; hotel and offices.
Project Delivery
– A Vision and indicative masterplan produced through an intensive seven day design charrette process with client and collaborators.
– A vision of timeless urbanism – a town comprising quarters of distinct character, use and density that could grow over time.
– A masterplan structured around a highly accessible public transport network and a sequence of parks, waterways, streets and spaces – to create legible, attractive and well-connected neighbourhoods.
– Inclusion of a variety of residential typologies, from higher density apartments to large villas set amongst paddocks and woodland.
– Orientation to maximise residential aspects over the water and landscape.
– A range of employment uses, including a business park.
– Phase 1 delivery of the detailed masterplan, including building typology and massing definition.
– Preparation of a Design Code to provide a set of rules and recommendations to guide other architects working on individual buildings.
