The Arms
The following is an extract from the document granting Arms to theUniversity, dated 14 May 1857:
Argent on a Cross Azure an open book proper, clasps Gold, between fourStars of eight points Or, on a chief Gules a Lion passant guardant alsoOr, together with this motto 'Sidere mens eadem mutato' . . . to be borneand used for ever hereafter by the said University of SYDNEY on theirCommon Seal, Shields, or otherwise according to the Laws of Arms. Themotto, which was written by F. L. S. Merewether, Second Vice-Provostof the University, conveys the feeling that in this hemisphere all feelingsand attitudes to scholarship are the same as those of our predecessorsin the northern hemisphere.
