TECHNICAL NOTES ABOUT LAKE BOTTOM SEDIMENT SAMPLING, WITH

PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO REPORTS AN18, AN19, AND AN20-ML

WHEN SETTING UP any geochemical sampling project, it is important to ensure that sampling localities can be recovered later with a degree of accuracy sufficient for the purpose. Our target of pre cision in relocating localities on lakes, when we first considered sediment sampling in 1982, was a maximum deviation of 2.5 m (one- tenth of the standard station interval). This criterion virtually precluded the collection of samples from canoes and the like.

Our first collection attempts were made in February of 1982 from the surface of the ice on Metcalfe Lake. Control tests made in March, 1983, on a grid set up by the same method as that used in 1982, revealed that any grid point could be relocated, by the closure method, within less than one metre in all of the seven cases attempted.

In a few words: the ice grid is set up by first laying out a baseline coinciding with the M(ain) B Case) L(ine) of the land-based permanent survey grid, followed by the determination of the inter cepts of the survey lines with that baseline, followed by the wal- king-out of those lines on which sampling is contemplated, followed by the chaining-off of sampling sites at the standard 25-m interval. Permanent shore markers play an important role in the verification... of the accuracy of the wing lines as they are being set up.

The sampling sites are marked semi-permanently with 15 to 20 cm long strips of fairly rigid, coloured plastic which are identified with waterproof ink according to the station number in the overall

i grid system. This minimizes the risk of error when marking the sample bags later. The plastic markers stick out above the snow and they are placed on the 'shoulder 1 of the straight, twice-walked trails that follow the precise alignment of the grid lines.

Sampling holes are drilled with a six-inch diameter ice auger at the actual point right ON the line where a sample has to be taken. The resulting hole will have a diameter between 16 and 18 cm, but is not necessarily straight over its entire 50 to 110 cm length. It is, however, wide enough for the easy passage of a sampling de vice which has a square cross-section and a diagonal width of 11.7 centimetres.

The lower 20-cm portion of this 75-cm long device can hold at least a kilogram of organic bottom sediment. The sampling probe

is of such design that it is unlikely to pick up firm materials such as silt, clay, sand, grit or gravel; these mineral particles have a very low sorptive capacity in comparison with the organic portion of the sediment and would merely act as dilutants in the eventual analysis. As a result of this design, the retrieved ma terial consists mainly of decomposing vegetable matter to the tune of 90 to 99 per cent. About 5% of this paste is solid; the rest is water.

The average sample size is about one litre at the time of

retrieval; after it has been stored in a 1.2 litre plastic bag and left alone for several hours, part of it separates out, and the top portion of the bag will contain clear water. The bag being closed with a twist-tie, its neck is not completely tight and will allow for the expulsion of this water when the bag is squeezed.

The bags, prior to being filled with the retrieved bottom sedi ment, are identified with waterproof ink, on two sides, showing the line and station numbers, and, in many cases, the consecutive sampling number and the depth, in metres, of the lake bottom at the site from which the sample is collected. The two-sided marking practice vir tually eliminates confusion in the rare cases where some numbers are rendered completely illegible during transport; the depth parameter serves a dual purpose: it constitutes a warning that the water is becoming dangerously shallow and that attempted ice drilling at the next station may expose the auger blades to contact with frozen-in mineral particles, or with the tops of boulders on the. near-shore lake bottom; it furthermore helps later, in the.interpretation of the sampling results,.because it sheds light on the bottom.topo graphy which is the most important factor in determining the depq- . . sition and displacement of organic sediment,' as well as its compo sition. The sampling depth can.be read directly on the measuring string which serves to lower and raise the sampler.

Preliminary sample preparation consists of drying the sample in the opened bag, transferring the resulting paste onto .a sturdy filter disk., drying it there down to leathery consistency, breaking it up into crumbs, and then drying it until further weight lo-ss becomes negligible. The crumbly mass, by then almost as hard as concrete, is transferred into plastic vials which are appropriately marked and

listed. In this state they are shipped or transported to the labo

ratory or receiving facility where.ultimate drying.is performed under controlled conditions, followed by pulverization and encap sulation (where applicable) prior to the actual chemical analysis.

Notes i1473THIS BOTTOM SAMPLING project entailed the drilling of twelve auger

holes through the ice of the North Bay of Metcalfe Lake, on claim

TB 1005014. The drill sites were located at standard grid stations,

chained off on grid lines 20, 24 and 28. These lines were set up

by theodolite (Topcon DT30) from the Main Baseline, which had been

set up, walked out, and chained earlier.Three holes were barren of organic sediment. It is this or

ganic material in which the metals and other mobile elements accu

mulate after they have been released by chemical action from the

underlying bedrock. Mineral 'soils' such as sand, grit and gravel have virtually no adsorption capacity for such elements.

The absence of organic sediment, when noted in shallow, near

shore areas of a lake, is mainly due to mechanical disturbance by either wave action or bottom currents caused by on-shore wind. The

displaced sediment is carried to deeper areas. If, however, no

organic sediment can be retrieved from a fairly deep area of the bottom, the most probable cause is that the sampling site is on a local elevation or on a slope with a gradient which exceeds 1:25.

A somewhat experienced worker can often anticipate the pro

bability of retrieving a good-sized sample from a drill site on

the basis of what happened at the previous sampling site. When

sample 52 on Line 20 turned out to be rather lean, it was almost

certain that no satisfactory material would come out of the next

hole, and therefore that hole was never drilled. It would have

taken up some time which was at a premium on the day when the bay

was sampled. Approaching shallower water on Lines 24 and 28, no

such anticipation was possible, and as a result there were some

barren holes. By then, daylight was fading.

As for the processing, the samples were debagged onto sturdy

filtar disks and dried until almost rock-hard, then broken up and stored in plastic vials awaiting shipment to Ottawa. The total cost

per sample for neutron activation analysis on 34 elements, as hand

led by Bondar-Clegg and Company, worked out at $ 20.33; the tech nical side of the procedure was handled by Becquerel Laboratories in Mississauga. My own involvement with the preparation took an

average of about 27 minutes per sample, or 4.25 nours for the batch.

About 12 hours were taken up by the follow-up consisting of inspec-

ting the analysis report and deciding which of the results were most

worth showing on the site plan, without causing too much clutter.

A 1:2000 scale does not allow for the display of 34 elements with

their concentrations, given the fact that the sampling sites are

shown as being 12.5 mm apart. The preparation of a limited base map on which to plot the figures to be displayed, the plotting, the

local travel (in order to get the plan printed), and the preparation

of map and enclosures for submission to the Ministry took up the rest of these 12 hours.

Additionally there were some costs and fees, as shown in the breakdown below.

1 Drying, repackaging, marking, shipping, 4^ hrs @ $10 42.502 Small supplies, shipping and telecommunications 11.00

3 Map-making and related activities, 12 hrs 120.00

4 150 km local travel @ $0.30 45.00

5 Analysis of 9 samples @ $20.33 182.97

6 Charges for map printing, 3 copies @ $1.50 4.50

Total cash expenditure and time valuation 405.97

As the field work was finished before the end of the 26th

of March, when the lines were set up in the morning, only one day was involved. For purposes of assessment credit, an amount of $ 100

is requested for this work; the prorated amount of camp and travel expenditure is 5 50, bringing the total to 5 555.97.

As far as OPAP assistance is concerned, expenses and time spent before the first of April, 1991, don't count. Here the claim would be $ 405.97.
