SYNOPSISThe development of Matacryl PUMA Bridge Deck
Waterproofi ng Membranes, which are effectively a
combination of Polyurethane and MMA, was a signifi cant
milestone since PUMA Waterproofi ng Systems are
capable of overcoming all the limitations imposed
by conventional MMA or Polyurethane and Polyurea
systems.
In addition to being applied at very low temperatures
and setting within 60 minutes, the cured membrane
will also offer a fl exibility that allows cracks in excess
of 3.5 mm to be bridged even at temperatures as
low as -20°C. This means that PUMA Systems may
be applied all year round and that once installation
commences, the ‘possession’ or downtime, is
overcome since there is very little waiting time
between successive coats and eventual handover
for use etc.
INTRODUCTIONThe use of PUMA (Polyurethane Methyl
Methacrylate) resin based Bridge Deck
Waterproofing Systems arose due
to the limitations that conventional
MMA and other resin based systems
offered. Specifically these were
related to insufficient crack bridging
capabilities and most notably in colder
weather climates, such as Canada,
Northern USA, Scandinavia, Russia and
other regions with extreme weather
conditions.
The rapid setting characteristics of
MMA, however, made it both suitable
and practical to employ, since the setting
and curing installation properties were
not adversely affected by ambient
temperatures. In effect PUMA Systems
may be applied at temperatures as low
as –20°C but will still set and typically
be ready for use within 60 minutes, for
example.
PERFORMANCE BENEFITSMatacryl PUMA Resins exceed performance of MMA and conventional resin based systems for the following reasons:
Suffi ciently resilient even after 45 – 60 minutes of being applied to allow hot rolled asphalt equipment to traffi c Matacryl Membrane without protection board.
Extreme impact resistance when tested according to AREMA (American Rail Ballast Indentation Certifi cation) and SNCF standards. Full BBA and ASTM Certifi cation.
Will adhere well to dry and clean surfaces including steel and pipe outlets etc.
Bond of membrane in excess of concrete tensile or cohesive strengths.
Flexibility suffi cient to bridge cracks in excess of3.5 mm in well below freezing conditions.
Will resist rain and snow within 45 – 60 minutes of installation.
Very easily repaired if willfully or accidentally damaged.
Rapid setting and curing enables limited ‘possession’ and rapid handover irrespective of ambient conditions.
