The Research Strategy Fund (RSF)

£3,490 to Dr Jeanne Shinskey for research assistance, participant recruitment and compensation for a preliminary study on toddlers’ generalisation from picture books to real objects

£3,600 to Prof Euan Nisbet for equipment for the Royal Holloway Atlantic and Artic Greehouse Gas Measurement Network

‘The RSF enabled me to attend a research intensive summer residency at Harvard, where I met and exchanged work with scholars in my field as well as cognate disciplines. The residency generated transnational links that remain active and helped me refine the scope of a larger grant application.’ Dr Emma Cox, Department of Drama and Theatre

‘I have had the benefit of RSF support on a number of occasions. It provided essential support for fieldwork in the United States which led to a series of publications, and I was able to fly to the Falkland Islands and act as an official observer to the Falklands referendum, which led to additional funding from a variety of sources. None of this would have been possible without the RSF’.  Professor Klaus Dodds, Department of Geography

£3,483 to Dr Ian Barnes to provide support for preliminary next generation sequencing (NGS) work on giant isopods of the genus Bathynomus

£1,990 to Professor John Hill for travel and external consultancy to prepare for a major AHRC grant application

‘The Research Strategy Fund enabled me to convene an interdisciplinary symposium on the subject of the metaphysical turn in new writing for theatre. The symposium opened an opportunity to network and to sharpen the intellectual parameters of a future research funding application’ Dr Chris Megson, Department of Drama and Theatre

£1,678 to Dr Chin-JuTsai for travel to China to study software firms

‘In the short months after I received the RSF grant, I hired a research assistant and programmer, paid participants, and collected data. I am currently writing the results in a manuscript for publication. Without that funding, this project could not have moved forward so quickly.’ Dr Laura Mickes, Department of Psychology

Up to £5,000 to contribute to:

• initial research to support a substantial grant application

• preparation and submission of a large multi-partner grant

• attendance at a networking event (not a conference)

• facilitating impact

“The funding from the Research Strategy Fund has helped enormously towards the production of my first professional debut recording with NMC. It’s a wonderful source of funding for helping new and unusual research projects get off the ground and I’m very much looking forward to working on the recordings this coming year.” Dr Mark Bowden, Department of Music
