Year-round there’s a range of premier mountain biking events that utilise
this trail network and mountain bike enthusiasts come from far and
wide to meet and compete. Keep an eye out for the Cateye Moonride,
Xterra and N-Duro Winter MTB Series.
All tracks are well marked and large map-boards can be found around
the forest, but if you want a convenient navigation tool on you at
all times, you should seriously consider purchasing the ‘Manky’ - it’s
a map on a hanky! Being a piece of micro-fi bre fabric, the Manky is
legible when wet, can be washed and dried, is absorbent, anti-bacterial,
eco-friendly and totally re-usable. It can be stuff ed in your bag or
pocket or tied around your bike’s handle bars. The Manky is available at
Redwoods, as well as at bike shops throughout Rotorua.
If you didn’t arrive in Rotorua prepared for a mountain biking
experience, not to worry; bikes and equipment can be hired from a
range of shops around the city and staff members can recommend a
guided tour or even a skills clinic where you can fi nd your best riding
technique.
Mountain Bike Rotorua are available
daily and are based at the Waipa
Mountain Bike carpark. They have
lots of options to help you make
the most of one of Rotorua’s
most spectacular natural assets.
The fi rst mountain bike
trails were built by local
mountain bike enthusiast Fred
Christianson and community
service workers in 1993. Over
the years these tracks, with the
assistance of the local club and
community, have developed
and grown into a vast network of
trails that makes the forest popular

From a traditional Māori hangi to fi ne dining and ethnic eateries, Rotorua has a delectable range of wining and dining options.
With its strong Māori traditions, Rotorua is the ideal place to try some indigenous kai (food). Māori cuisine is enjoying a renaissance as traditional plants and ingredients, such as pikopiko (fern shoots), can be seen more often in contemporary dishes.
Many of the tour options to Māori villages include the chance to try a succulent hangi – a traditional feast of meat and vegetables steamed in an underground pit heated by hot rocks. Meats most often used are lamb and pork and you’ll get to taste the traditional New Zealand roast vegetables such as kumara and pumpkin. A hangi takes several hours to cook and the end result has a delicious smoky fl avour.
Around town, there are more than 50 cafés and restaurants featuring everything from Indian and Moroccan to Italian, European and contemporary New Zealand cuisine. The lake end of Tutanekai Street is a good place to begin exploring, with plenty of options to suit everyone.
Warm yourself with hearty pub food and a pint, or try some of the delicious kormas, kebabs and tandoori dishes on off er at the town’s Indian and Middle-Eastern eateries. You can tempt your tastebuds with tasty tagines and Moroccan tapas, authentic Italian dishes, succulent steaks, and even Japanese/French fusion fare. Sample award-winning fi ne dining with a breathtaking view of Lake Rotorua, relax at a stylish café or bistro, enjoy the elegance and charm of a country lodge, or soak up the ambience of an English-style pub or Austrian Gasthaus.

Rotorua off ers a vibrant shopping experience, from
galleries and gift shops off ering both traditional and
contemporary Māori crafts to department stores and
fashion boutiques.
Rotorua’s city centre has more than 300 retail outlets, from major chain
stores and boutiques to specialty stores, galleries and craft outlets. One
of the real highlights of shopping here is the superb range of Māori arts
and crafts. The city’s galleries, souvenir outlets and gift shops stock some
exquisite examples, from beautiful wood carvings inlaid with bone and
paua (abalone) to Māori weaving and designer jewellery crafted from
natural products like fl ax, paua, greenstone (jade), gourds, bone and shell.
Often carvings have their own special story to tell about the region and
its people. Look for the toi iho™, which is used to identify authentic and
quality Māori crafts. You can watch the carvers and weavers at work at
Mountain Jade and Te Puia, and Tamaki Māori Village also has a fi ne
display of indigenous work. If you’d like to visit some local artists and
craftspeople, pick up a copy of the Rotorua Arts Trail from the information
centre on Fenton Street.
Other shopping goodies include fashion wear from the country’s
leading designers, gems and crystals, contemporary New Zealand art,
geothermal cosmetics, New Zealand made souvenirs and skincare
products. Overseas visitors
who get their purchase sent
home directly by the retailer
do not have to pay GST.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to
friendly backpacker hostels; from bright lights city central
to B&B rooms with a view, or conference facilities close to
relaxing mud pools, Rotorua has room for you.
Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how
an accommodation property has been independently
rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of
accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication
of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the
room – inspection should be welcome.
Hotels generally off er tea/coff ee making facilities, a bathroom and an
onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers
who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually off er self-contained
kitchens. If you’re on a fi xed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth
hostel accommodation with communal facilities. Many off er extra facilities
such as swimming pools, bars and internet connection.
Holiday parks are another good alternative, providing cabins or
camping in a more peaceful rural setting, or opt for a taste of luxury
at a lakeside lodge or B&B. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are
plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To fi nd out

Tongariro National Park in the south, you’ll fi nd snowcapped mountains,
the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, pristine native bush, bubbling
mud pools and geysers, and one of the world’s only Dual World Heritage
Areas. Cast your line for a fat trout or get an adrenalin rush with a spot of
bungy jumping, jet-boating or off -road quadbiking.
Waitomo
If you’re staying in Rotorua, then you’re just a jump away from one of
New Zealand’s favourite natural attractions. Deep beneath the ground,
the vast Waitomo Caves are full of eerie stalactites and stalagmites lit by
millions of tiny glowworms. One of the amazing adventure options is to
abseil into the spectacular Lost World cavern.
Waikato
Matamata, otherwise known to Lord of the Rings fans as Hobbiton
has a become a destination in itself, where you can check out the
homes of Bilbo and Frodo set amidst the rolling lush green Waikato
countryside. While you’re in the area, be sure to pay a visit to New
Zealand’s ‘kiwi town’, Otorohanga, where there’s a breeding centre for
the endangered kiwi bird.
