Weekly News and Announcements
Hello Rotarians and Friends! Not that I’m counting or anything, but I only
have FOUR MORE NEWSLETTERS to go before Judy Masaki takes over!
She will do a great job and will be working with Andy Bednar to highlight
our Centennial year through our weekly Bulletin. Expect changes, lots of
fun, and tons of activities in the coming months.
Today my best bud, Jaden Berk, attended our
meeting! I was so happy to see him. He just
finished his Freshman year at Howland High and
ended up with a 4.0 GPA…no surprise there! He
said he will be traveling to Japan and China this
summer—what a great opportunity for him. He and I had a chance to
make plans for his taking over Berk Enterprises the next time Dad is out
of town. (Don’t tell Rob). I could not have been happier to see him this
week.
Chris Shape is handling Fellowship this month and after hobbling to the
podium he told us two jokes…one about a hospital patient and another
about a blonde….no surprise there. As I said before about Chris handling
Fellowship…be afraid, be very afraid!
Our Guests This Week: Jaden Berk and Rod Zeck from Cortland Rotary.
Presidents Night – Wednesday, June 21, is our Presidents Night
celebration. All members should have received their Reservation Form
along with last week’s Bulletin. Please get your responses in to Cheryl
ASAP. Sponsorship Forms were also emailed previously. Any member
wishing to be a sponsor needs to let us know by June 14th so their name
can be listed in the program. It promises to be a fun night filled with
surprises, music and fellowship. Please make plans to attend.
Membership Dues – Dues invoices have been mailed to all members. If
you have not received YOURS yet, contact Cheryl. Dues must be paid in
full by June 30.
Committee Assignments for 2017/2018 – Andy Bednar said he has
received responses from many members regarding their assignments for
the next Rotary year. All members will be assigned to committees
whether they responded or not. He said he still has two openings for
Chairmen and if anyone is interested in learning more about those
positions, please contact Andy.

Cortland Rotary’s 28th Annual Golf Classic – Rod Zeck from the Cortland
Club stopped in today to personally invite members to the Cortland Club’s
Golf Classic on July 19. For $85 you will enjoy an absolutely wonderful
day of golf and fun activities. Bob Hoy told us a few weeks ago that he is
hoping to put together a foursome. If interested, please contact Bob. A
copy of the registration form will be emailed with this newsletter.
Slate of Board and Officers – The membership voted today to approve
the slate of board members and officers as listed in last week’s Bulletin.
Congratulations all!
Club Board Meeting – The Board of Directors will meet on Thursday,
June 15th. Location: TBA. Social time is 5:30 p.m. and dinner/meeting is
at 6:00 p.m. Current and incoming board members are invited to attend.
Foundation Board Meeting – The Foundation Board will meet on
Wednesday, June 28, 11:30 a.m. at Enzo’s.
Club Archives – Any member who may have Rotary records or materials is
asked to contact Andy Bednar. He will be the President during our 100th
Anniversary and is working on a VIRTUAL museum of our history. Please
see him at a meeting or contact him at work to make arrangements for a
photo of your memorabilia.
Our Centennial---Andy Bednar again shared
information with us about how we will be
celebrating our Centennial next year. He will be
taking a three-pronged approach to the
celebration:
All year
--We will be learning more about the history of the Rotary Club of
Warren
--We will be generating a portable Warren Rotary History Museum
--Fellowship will be hijacked next year and special plans are in place for
our meetings
The Month of January 2018
--We will have special programs celebrating our accomplishments
--We will have our weekly club meeting on Monday, January 29 (the first
date Warren Rotary ever met) in place of our regular Wednesday meeting

--We will hold an event at the Avalon Inn and Resort on Saturday, January
27, 2018 to celebrate our 100th year of service. He hopes to have tickets
distributed in September. This will be a black tie optional event. The
club will also be holding a reverse raffle as part of the festivities. It is
hoped this will become an annual event as well.
District Grant – We were just notified that our Club has been awarded
$1,200 toward our Centennial year project of repairing the Fountain on
Courthouse Square. The project will take multiple years and will involve
other organizations as well. Members will learn more at the Assembly on
June 28th about our plans. Please mark your calendar and be sure to
attend that day.
July Meeting Schedule
As members know, Enzo’s is closed the first two weeks of July. We have
made the following plans for those two weeks and are asking members to
make notes on their calendars regarding the offsite locations:
July 5 – We will meet at Perkins Park in Warren at one of the pavilions. A
picnic lunch will be provided. Sign-up sheets will be distributed soon.
July 12 – We will meet at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna
and it will be critical that members sign up in advance so that the Air Base
has time to do some vetting. Because security is essential, members will
be asked to provide driver’s license information to Venita Collins ASAP.
If for some reason you cannot attend a meeting to sign up, you can
contact Venita at [email protected]. This is a secure email
system. Members will also be given a windshield tour of the base.
Anyone ordering a lunch for either/both of these offsite meetings and
then does not attend, will be invoiced.
More information will be shared over the coming weeks.

Veteran’s Haven
Matthew Slater and Anita Wainwright from
Veteran’s Haven were our speakers today.
Veteran’s Haven is part of Family and Community
Services. The goal of the program is to promote
housing stability, case management and outreach
service coordination. They also have a broad range
of supportive services designed to resolve the immediate crisis of
homelessness and promote housing stability. Those eligible for services
include low income veterans and their families.
Matt shared some facts about their program:
Over 85% of veterans exiting their program have obtained
permanent housing.
Over 60% of veterans who can work obtain work by their exit.
This is the only program in Ohio that can serve both male AND
female veterans and their children.
Over 90% of veterans exit the program with either employment or
financial benefits.
While veterans make up 10% of our population they are two times as likely
to fall into homelessness. This can be for a variety of reasons including
health and mental health issues, lack of job skills, substance abuse, etc.
Veteran’s Haven was established in 1941 as part of Family and Community
Services in Portage County with an 8 bed facility. They now have 100
beds. Warren and Trumbull County has the only transition-in-place
housing program in Ohio. This is where a veteran can be given an
apartment while they are working on becoming financially independent.
Support services include:
Assistance with permanent housing
Counseling resources
Enrollment in Trumbull County Probate Court Veteran Assistance
Program
Employment training
Finding employment and referrals to employment agencies
Help with obtaining Social Security and Veteran’s Affairs benefits
Assistance with medical appointments
Food stamps
Aid with budget creation
