This month, each year, Clubs across the globe celebrate the
start of their new officers’ year of service. Leaders set
strategies for growth and exemplify all the qualities that make members extraordinary:
integrity, expertise, and commitment .
The Rotary Club of Warren was pleased to welcome visiting
Rotarian, Larry Walton, from East Liverpool and two guests, Susan Deleo
and Keno Hills, to our second meeting of Rotary year 2020 – 2021.
Following a virtual rendition of My Country ‘Tis of Thee, recitation of
The Pledge of Allegiance and The Four Way Test, and our Invocation,
Julia Westein treated us to a solo singing performance of In the Good Old
Summertime. This was certainly in line with the scorching heat and
humidity that we experienced last week!
Andy Bednar then offered the following Fellowship presentation:
“Oftentimes, Rotarians are reluctant to join the Fellowship Committee
because they are unsure of what to talk about. I guess my feeling is
first, that the purpose of Fellowship is to clear our minds of whatever it
was we were dealing with in the first half of the work-day, and second,
that you really can talk about anything at all. Fellowship can be
humorous, cute, informational, educational, applicable, or off-the-wall.
So THIS Fellowship today is a few of those things. . .
In order to come up with an idea, I decided to put today’s date,
7– 8 2020, into a search engine and report to you on the first three
hits pertaining to different subjects. In that way, we can see what
today has in common with everything else in the world!
The first hit was for the purchase of a Bevles 782020 1000 Watt
120 Volt Coil Element. This is available on Amazon for $55.91 with

free shipping. This item is used in conjunction with a food warmer so my
guess is that many of us have come into contact with this item somewhere
in our past maybe at a banquet or in a restaurant. If you plan to purchase
this item, you can also do so through Tundra Restaurant Supply but you’ll
pay $73.99 plus shipping. . .
The second hit was again for the purchase of an item. . .this time a
wash reservoir for a Range Rover. So if any of you happen to need one of
those, 782020 is the number you want to remember!
And the third hit was for a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Passenger Door
Lock Latch Actuator.
Realizing that my efforts might not have ‘hit home’ with any of you,
I scrolled down to the 27th hit, and there I found a Wikipedia entry for
Hillsdale, Indiana.
Hillsdale is a little town in Vermillion County that was established in
1873. It is on the western banks of the Wabash River in western
central Indiana. There is a post office in that town that has been in
operation since 1872. It is so hilly there that most of the businesses
were built at the lower elevation while the residences were built up
higher. But fear not, in order to address that problem, the Hillsdale
Steps were built in 1903 to improve foot transportation.
What does 782020 have in common with Hillsdale? Well that is a
portion of the geographic coordinates of the town.
So there you have it: information not only on replacement parts to
purchase (should you need them) PLUS a complete knowledge – yes trust
me, that’s all there is to know – of the little town of Hillsdale, Indiana -
population: 845!”
After helping to sort through our Club’s belongings, Julia Westein
found some items particular to Rotary’s identity – specifically, Rotary’s
mission to eradicate polio.
Rotarians around the world take part in National Immunization Days
(NIDs) which are nationwide mass campaigns to deliver supplemental doses
of oral poliovirus vaccine to interrupt the circulation of polio. In 1985,
the the global polio eradication project was started by RI President Carlos

Roberto H. Valentin of Villa Caparra, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico (pictured
in the center above with Julia) is Past Vice-President of Rotary International
and Director on the Board of Santander Bank. He raised 50 million dollars
for Polio Plus and is one of the top three Rotarians to raise money for the
fight against polio. He is a member of the Rotary Club of San Juan, Puerto
Rico.
Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Rodrigo
Alvarez Cambras, of Havanna, Cuba, was
the first to administer the polio vaccine on
the African continent in the French Congo

And two other Rotarians, who are
friends of Julia Wetstein from RI District
6510 in Illinois, are: Dr. Dee Boswell,
Cardiologist and Dr. Ella Lacey, who has a
PhD in Public Health. Both have travelled
to National Immunization Days in Nigeria
and India. See them pictured below.
Many thanks to Julia for
sharing these stories of the
real people behind the “Polio

to Vietnam for 13 months. He also spent 2 ½ years in Germany and had the
opportunity to travel throughout Europe. Upon his discharge from military
service, Mike returned to college and graduated from Youngstown State
University.
Mike has worked since he was a youngster, when he had three newspaper
routes. At the end of his high school years, he was employed at Wean
Engineering. Later, he was a Fiscal Officer for the Department of Human
Services, spent eight years in Real Estate, and held numerous jobs in the
governmental sector, including the Department of Transportation and the
State Auditor’s Office. Since 2012, he has been enjoying retirement.

KEEP ON BEING THE LIGHT – Linda Henderson, District Governor
2020-2021, encourages all Rotarians to open their hearts and minds to
possibilities this year, find ways to meet and plan, find new ways of
raising funds, and use their resources to promote the welfare and peace of
our local communities and the world. She quotes Albus Dumbledore, who
said, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if only we
remember to turn on the light.” Rotary is that light!

Infantry Veteran, completing five overseas tours of duty. He has
served his country for over 30 years, in and out of uniform.
Jim is currently the Director of the 910th Airman and Family Readiness
Center. The Center’s mission is to plan, implement, administer and counsel
units and their leadership on individual, family and community issues,
including career assistance, transition, relocation and other work/life
services and activities offered to military members, retirees, Department
of Defense (DoD) civilian members, and their families.
Jim indicated that the AW is one of the largest employers in the
Mahoning Valley, and they rely a lot on the community in providing
assistance to the airmen and their families with: personal finance
readiness for paying bills; writing resumes and job searching as they
transition back to civilian life; relocation services such as moving
companies and realtors; deployment briefings; and VA benefits. He
stated that The United Way has been phenomenal with providing
assistance and helping the program to grow exponentially, especially during
the pandemic. All of these services assist them in fulfilling their mission
and motto - to be combat ready now for tomorrow’s fight.
