Leaders for a New Rotary Year 2014-15
Governor Elsa Gillham
From Governor Elsa...
A s we move into the new Rotary year, I am excited and honored to have this opportunity to serve as your District Governor. Rotary President Gary CK Huang’s theme for the 2014‐15 year “Light Up Rotary” is more than just our
theme. It is how we live, how we think, how we feel and how we work in Rotary. It is how we make a difference every day not just in our local communities but the rest of the world where Rotary serves. We want every one of our District 5280 clubs to “Light Up Rotary” by being a VIBRANT club. “Every Club a Vibrant Club” is the only District goal this year. A VIBRANT club is Visible in their communities, has Involved members, does Bigger, Better and Bolder Projects, Reaches out to recruit and retain members with a net increase of 2 per club, Advances and trains their members to become leaders, has Never ending fun and supports The Rotary Foundation with an average of $250 per member contribution. In short, VIBRANT clubs are strong, energized, engaged and growing and are recognized for their outstanding service to the local and world communities. I challenge each Rotarian to Light Up Rotary by making your club a VIBRANT Club.
District Governor Elsa and Larry Gillham met RI President Gary C.K. Huang and Corinna Huang at the International Assembly held annually in January. Such an inspiring time .
Could Governor Elsa be happier? So excited treceive her governor’s pin from Governor DouBaker at the District Conference.

D o you enjoy Rotary? Do you believe that active and committed Rotarians can be an exceptional force for good in their communities and around
the world? Then why not “Proclaim Rotary.”
Our service not only benefits others, it also brings a sense of fulfillment and joy to us. We ought to share that opportunity for joy with our dearest friends and our most admired colleagues.
Each one of us has friends and relatives who would place Service Above Self in their lives as Rotarians. They are waiting for you to open that Rotary door to the joy and fulfillment of service.

I t’s all around you—gardens need planting, schools need repair, children need shoes, homeless need
food and individuals need help picking up the pieces. We are Rotarians and it’s our mission to “Light Up Rotary.” When we “Light up Rotary,” we light up our communities by getting involved and making a difference in the lives of those who need us the most. Roll up your sleeves, get to work, and join other Rotarians in changing lives! If you’d like to join the District 5280 Community Service monthly meetings and become part of the District‐wide projects, our first meeting will be on Saturday, July 26, 2014, 10:00am, 8939 S. Sepulveda Boulevard (the same build‐ing the District Office is located in), Suite 101, Los Angeles, CA 90045. Free parking in the structure directly west of the building. If you have any questions, [email protected] or 310‐600‐6196 . Yours in Rotary!
R otary began as a professional networking organization over 100 years ago where
business owners and leaders “rotated” between members’ offices. Doing business with fellow Rotarians, supporting each other and helping fellow members succeed is some‐thing all clubs can embrace. We will have an Ethics Panel for Rotarians along with our Rotaract Ethics Competition. Completing an application and paying dues does not instantly mean everyone abides by our 4 Way Test. We encourage all clubs to participate in the high school art, music, dance and speech contests in March. Any size club can use the competition to have a great community event at their club. The Literacy Breakfast will be August 13. The program will focus on the Senior Scam Awareness Project and Vision to Learn.

I t is with enthusiasm that I have this opportunity to work with fellow Rotarians with the com‐
mon belief in Service Above Self. Because of our experience in quickly responding during the disaster in the Philippines in November 2013, we are planning a protocol that can be applicable to any disaster nationwide or internationally. Our committee is well into the preparation for the Guatemala Humanitarian Trip. We are reviewing and finalizing projects for Global Grants. The Friendship Exchange will help Rotarians experience the meaning of crossing borders and building friendships with International Clubs.

I t is my honor to serve as Senior Assistant Governor for the 2014/15 Rotary year.
My hope is that the Assistant Governors of Club Service are able to provide support and guidance to the Club Presidents to ensure that they are better able to make their Clubs VIBRANT. I am very aware of the pressures that you may be feeling as a new Club President. What helped me the most was to be well organized and prepared entering my year. Establish goals with input from all Club members and ensure that all Club members are aware of the goals for the coming Rotary year. Our District can thrive through strong relationships and good communication.

T he Merriam‐Webster Dictionary tells us that the meaning of the word communication is “the imparting or exchanging of information and news”. Communication connects people. The Communications Team is excited to
bring you the news and information in a variety of ways this year.
The District Web Site has a new look. We will continue looking at ways to improve the site creatively and technically.
Time Magazine move aside, the new District Newsletter is here. You will enjoy the creative format and actual Rotary stories as told by our members. You can look forward to an occasional critical exposé. Check it out.
Oh, you can depend on receiving the Weekly News just like the name sug‐gests, weekly. Here you will find information on both Club and District events. All clubs are encouraged to submit event information.
And who is not into social media? This year we are joined by a couple of social media gurus who will help us to better organize and utilize that popular plat‐form, Facebook. Stay tuned!
And let us not forget. Attend your club events, attend district events, and attend your club meetings. Why? Because being the social creatures that we are, we like to TALK. Where else can we join other Rotarians and TALK. Not only may you learn something new, you may even make a new friend.

The Governor’s Visit
11
O ver the next several months Governor Elsa Gillham, Chief of Staff Melody St. John and the Assistant Governor of the club, will visit Rotary
Clubs to learn about the clubs and hear the governor speak at every club in Rotary District 5280. Great projects and fun socials will be discussed. They will visit with old friends and meet new ones. The Board will meet the governor one hour before and morning meetings one hour after the Rotary Club meeting. Each Board member should be prepared to discuss, 3 to 5 minutes, their area of responsibility and how it relates to making a VIBRANT Club. Develop a notebook, folder or special presentation to give to the leadership team about the operations and programs of the club. This Club Information Book is a reference for club members as well as those joining the Rotary Club.
Be sure to include membership reports and rosters, budgets and finances along with bylaws. The Assistant Governor for each club can be a resource to help with the materials needed for the visit.
Specifics that will be reviewed prior to the visit: Rotary Club Central is updated with goals, projects
and pertinent information. ClubRunner is updated with current Club Leaders
names and contact information. The club website is updated and current. The club’s dues are paid.
One club member is invited to present, in 2 or 3 minutes, their Rotary Story and how Rotary has affected their life. Governor Elsa will recognize the member who has been a Rotarian the longest, the club member who has sponsored the most new members in the last year, the club member most active in club and district events and projects in the last year and the club member who has made the largest contribution to The Rotary Foundation in the last year. The Governor’s Visit is a time to invite spouses, partners and perspective members. The Official Visit is a time for new member inductions and for special recognitions. The District Governor is THE program on the date of her address to the club. The President should keep business items and the club announcements at a minimum during this meeting. Some clubs give gifts to the governor and special guests. Some have great fun with the meeting and pres‐entations. A thoughtful gift is a contribution in the gov‐ernor’s name to The Rotary Foundation or a gift that is suitable to be auctioned at the Foundation Celebration benefiting The Rotary Foundation.

R I President Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his presidential theme for 2014‐15. Huang was
inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucius who said, “It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness." "There are so many problems in the world, so many people who need help. Many peo‐ple say, 'There's nothing I can do.' So they sit there doing nothing. Meanwhile everything stays dark.” "The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up the world," said Presi‐dent Huang, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei in Taiwan.
