    SPO presents The Romantic Masters

As the Industrial Revolution swept the western world in the late 18 th and early 19th centuries,it laid the foundation for todays technology. But not everyone was happy with the newmechanical, scientific world.

A large group of musicians longed for the more romantic, mystical, spiritual world of the

past, says Ronald.Their work became known as the Romance Music. Ronald has selectedsome of the great Romantic music for this Saturday, May 11 concert performance:

Havanaise, Opus 83 for Violin and Orchestra by the French composer CamilleSaint-Saens, is based on a Cuban rhythm, which you might better recognize as tango.Young artist Leo Jarmain will perform the violin solo in this piece.

Piano Concerto No. 2, by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, who played thepiano solo himself for the premier of this concerto in 1901. Our piano soloist will beyoung artist Cissy Zhou. This piece has been frequently used in movies, including theMarilyn Monroe favorite, The Seven Year Itch.

Pines of Rome, by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi is a symphonic poemthat eloquently depicts pine trees in four different locations around Rome duringdifferent historical periods and times of day.

Capriccio Espagnol, a lively showpiece for orchestra based on Spanish folk melodies, and was written by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
