Musicians on Long Island no longer have totravel into the city to receive conservatory-levelmusic instruction. With an outstanding facultyand the resources of a world-class university, the Community Music Program at Stony BrookUniversity has grown to encompass all agegroups and levels of musical experience.

MUSIC BASICS FOR KIDS (4 YEAR OLDS)In the Music Basics for Kids class, preschoolerslearn the basics of pitch, rhythm and notationthrough games and exercises involving singingand physical movement. By developing theirmusicianship at an early age, students will be ina better position to begin their formal musicalstudy with deeper understanding and skill.Taught by Dorothea Cook, a certified andlicensed Dalcroze instructor.

DALCROZE EURHYTHMICS LEVEL I(K AND GRADE 1)The first level of Dalcroze Eurhythmicsemphasizes key Dalcroze subjects: simple andcompound meters, rhythmic patterns, phrasing, ear training and musical notation. Usingkinesthetic movement as the primary mode oflearning, the Dalcroze pedagogy enableschildren to transfer their physical experiences toa conceptual understanding of music theory. The Level I curriculum, a two-year course ofstudy, is taught by Dorothea Cook, a certifiedand licensed Dalcroze instructor.

DALCROZE EURHYTHMICS LEVEL II(GRADE 2 AND GRADE 3)The advanced level of Dalcroze Eurhythmicsis essential enrichment for students who havealready begun formal instrumental study. The exercises and games in Level II developadvanced musicianship skills such as mixedmeter, polyrhythm, notation in bass and trebleclefs, conducting and rigorous ear training. This program is strongly endorsed by privateinstrumental teachers who appreciate thedepth of musical understanding that Dalcrozestudents bring to their private lessons. The LevelII curriculum, a two-year course of study, istaught by Dorothea Cook, a certified andlicensed Dalcroze instructor.

PRE-COLLEGE DIVISION (GRADE 6 TOGRADE 12)The Pre-College Division offers coaching andperformance opportunities in chamber musicand a rich curriculum that includes composition, music theory and aural skills. Students enrolledin the program are already accomplishedmusicians in their schools who are looking fornew, challenging and exciting experiences thatare not offered anyplace else. Audition required.

CHAMBER MUSIC WORKSHOPParticipants are placed in compatible chambermusic groups and will meet with a coach for fivesessions in preparation for a concert scheduledat the end of each semester. Groups arecarefully assembled according to skill level andexperience. The rehearsal location and times arescheduled at the mutual convenience of thecoach and participants.
