Wollundry Rotary Club’s Annual Report 5

President’sReportFrank Fuller

It is with pleasure I present the President’s Report for 2010/11. It has been an honour and privilege to be President of this wonderful Club, an experience which has enriched my life. Thank you to my wife Helen for her constant help and support in a difficult year for her.

I am also very grateful for the wonderful support given me by Secretary Evan Robertson, Treasurer David Benn and our Directors. Also the sterling support from Sergeant At Arms, Geoff Breust and ‘phantom’ prop man, Paul Milde.

Thank you Wollundry members and partners. Every member has given great service to our projects, the two Markets and the Food & Wine Festival, and to any other activity when called upon. Directors will highlight the work of Club members in their reports but I must thank Bulletin Editors, Paul Murray, John Egan, John Ferguson, Andy Irvine and Doug Sutton; Alan Eldridge (and Anthea) for the Club Program; Peter Crozier (Gail) for leading our Sporting and Social program; Markets and Festival chairmen in Chris Nash, Peter Mackinnon and Kevin Roben, Festival Secretary Paul Milde and Treasurer, David Hodge; Our Apologies Officer Paul (and Carolyn) Murray; James Hamilton for Finance and pursuit of Trailer Housing and Greg Conkey for Club Publicity and much more. There are several members who were great counsel to me in the year. I thank them but they prefer to remain anonymous in case I got it wrong.

Our social events, the Meal Deal, Christmas Party, Movie outing, Sailing Weekend and District Conference have been successful in all respects and in all cases supported by our partners.

Some indication of the success of our service and fellowship can be gauged from the reports and the list of donations and sponsorships in this Book. I estimate over 3,000 man hours were expended servicing our markets and festival alone. During the year some terrible disasters have occurred with floods in Australia and earthquakes and tsunamis overseas. Club has responded as best possible with funds for the floods and increased funding to the Shelter box program. With every donation or sponsorship,

regardless of the amount, we have contributed to improving the lives of people within the Australian community and abroad.

This night a year ago, I outlined a desire to strengthen our outcomes for Youth programs. Youth Exchange has continued and Club has been successful with excellent students, both inbound and outbound. How fortunate we were to have Gabriel Mota from Brazil with us whilst we ‘loaned’ Laura Tibbetts to Brazil. I thank all host families and members for your support.

Club sponsorship for school students, at Wagga Wagga High and the Riverina Anglican College, to the many Rotary supported events has also increased, a great result. For Foundation, I had a particular desire for Wollundry to again undertake a FAIM trip. This did occur, to Vanuatu and my congratulations to the FAIM committee and actual team for a great result.

Club membership started at 74 and has reached 77. A great result and I urge members to maintain our membership levels. There are many people in the community who just need to be shown the door to membership of Rotary by being extended an invitation to a meeting.

I formally welcomed to Club membership, in the year, Tim Barter (Colleen), Ray Pankhurst (Anne), Bruce Spinks (Joo-Yee), Nick Leywood (Sian), Chris Metcalfe (Angela), Simon Musgrave (Tanya) and Malcolm Robertson (Fran) to our Club.

I extend thanks and congratulations to District Governor, Neal Fogarty and Barbara for a successful year and the support you have given Club. Also to our Assistant District Governor Gary Roberts and Marilyn for your interest and assistance. Thanks to all other Group 5 Presidents for your support and friendship.

Best wishes to Doug Conkey and his Board for 2011/12. I know you will have a most enjoyable and successful year ahead.

ClubAdministration

Michael Eldridge

It has been a pleasure being the Wollundry Club Administration Director. The role has been made quite a simple task due to the expertise of those members who took on the sub-committee responsibilities.I commend the dedication to his role of Apologies officer, Paul Murray (and Carolyn) who have helped keep the kitchen happy and the ordering of Wollundry’s famous pumpkin serves that Peter Crozier so looks forward to whilst Alan Eldridge so enjoys sharing his with David Benn. Our Sergeant at Arms, Geoff Breust, has kept the funds rolling in each week with his devotion to duty, in finding one more person to fine….. If you are late you are paying! Thank you deputies. To the fantastic fellows, Paul Murray, John Ferguson, Andy Irvine, Doug Sutton and John Egan, who have taken care of the bulletin editing. You have done a standout job this year, well done.Alan Eldridge, for looking after the program

speakers this year, thank you for acquiring some very interesting speakers. John Smith continued his commitment to Rotary by organizing a strong team to District Conference and Club Changeover. Our social committee, under the direction and leadership of Peter Crozier has helped organize some fantastic social outings this year and the meal get togethers. Thanks for the Sailing trip, Mark Hillis and much thanks to Gail and Peter Crozier, Kaz and David Hodge for a wonderful Christmas party. There are so many to thank for the great work you have done. Thank you again. I wish to extent my gratitude to the President Frank Fuller, fellow Board members and my Sub-committees for making my time as a Director a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. I would like to wish Doug Conkey and his team every success in the year 2011-2012.

Michael Eldridge

I am very pleased to report a successful year with excellent work by members of the Foundation committees. I congratulate and thank all Club members for your support. Club members contributed some $4,500 to the Rotary Foundation and at least eight members achieved Centurion status. Club has also continued our support of Polio Plus with a contribution of $3,000. Members and partners also attended a District initiative ‘movie night’ with other Wagga Clubs at the Forum Theatre for Polio Plus. I am proud to say our members and partners turned out strongly and then enjoyed a Pizza and coffee (or ale) at the Thirsty Crow. A wonderful fund raiser and fellowship night. Thank you.George Thomas (FAIM) and Jim Gibson (International Projects) and committee members worked together and acting on their advice, Club donated $2,500 through RAWCS for continuing improvements to the

Kokoda Memorial Hospital.Alan Lloyd and Michael Knight were most active keeping us well informed with Rotary information. Additional thanks to Michael for keeping members informed of the history of the club and district. Finally, the highlight of Foundation activities for our Club was a FAIM team which travelled to Tanna Island, Vanuatu from 14-28 May. The team consisted of Wollundrians Kevin Roben as Team Leader and Tim Barter. They were accompanied by Colleen Barter and friends of Rotary in Jim and Maureen Doig and Ray Bagley. This wonderful group travelled at their own expense and worked on the construction of the hospital buildings and renovation of two schools. Club contributed $2,500 for the project. Rotary and the people of Vanuatu are indebted to you all.

Thank you for the chance to be one of this club’s directors for this year. It has been a fulfilling and profitable time made enjoyable by the contribution of a very experienced and dedicated group of committee chairmen. The seven committees have functioned very well and again have placed the work of this club at the forefront of the community which we serve. My special appreciation goes to all the club members who demonstrate great commitment, perseverance and cooperation in fulfilling the objectives of this club.

Equipment Hire. Mark Fleming (Ch): This committee again provided this valuable service to our community. Two valuable examples of this was the providing of equipment for the Wagga City Council’s “Little Big Day Out”, and the Science and Engineering challenge for local high schools held at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club. A sub committee headed by James Hamilton has been very active in procuring a new home for the trailers.

Farmers’ Markets. Chris Nash (Ch): The Farmers’ Markets held on the second Saturday of each month is solidly emplaced on the calendar of those who seek fresh produce or a lazy morning with a coffee and the newspaper. It again has been a tremendous performer grossing for the club between $3,000 to $4,000 a month.

Food & Wine Festival. Kevin Roben (Ch): The festival has become a highlight for the City of Wagga Wagga and attracted a large crowd both from the city and also from other locations. There were many innovative proposals tried including the celebrity chef, the art show and dining on the verandah of the Civic Theatre. The entertainment provided virtually non stop for 9 hours was worth the price of admission alone! It is testimony to the hard work of this committee and its sub committee that this year $40,600 was donated to the Willans Hill School to assist with their teaching of literacy skills.

Pride of Workmanship. Dennis Shean (Ch): This committee provided recognition to the following

people for their workplace achievements: Simon Carberry, Michael Cattell, Robert Hall, Candice Hussey, Anthea Genrich, Grant Roben and Fay Sheather.

Projects. Mark Hillis (Ch): This committee had a massive workload of the analysis of dozens of applications for assistance and then the subsequent presentation to the club membership. Again this committee provided the administrative base from which this club’s proud history of assistance to local organisations and to National and International tragedies is maintained.

Senior Citizens/Community Health Awareness. Rick Priest (Ch): This committee was recognised for the extraordinary contribution made to senior citizens by our club. The Wagga Senior Citizens organisation has been the recipient of financial assistance for 21 years from our club and $3,000 this year. The Member for Wagga Wagga, Daryl Maguire, MLA, presented President Frank with an appreciation plaque during Seniors Week celebrations.

Sunday Markets. Peter MacKinnon (Ch): The Sunday Markets has again been the backbone of our fund raising. My appreciation to all members for their contribution to its success. There are a number of issues the club needs to acknowledge if these markets are to grow and be enhanced. This year we celebrated 18 years at the Myer car park. We continued right through the busy Christmas period, with some excellent returns and without the hassle of finding and setting up another site. Excellent publicity was arranged through the use of an agreement with the Daily Advertiser.

I thank all club members but in particular, President Frank for his guidance and wisdom, for making this a most enjoyable and rewarding year.

YouthReportPaul Gianniotis

We have had a very active year with all of our ongoing youth programs and initiatives well attended by the youth of our community. They have run effectively and smoothly throughout the year with the support of many of the club members. I am sure we have made a difference to these young adults of our community. Our inbound youth exchange student Gabriel Mota left us in December to return home to Brazil. Thanks to the hosts which included the Thomas, Finney, Knight and Leywood families for their support with the program. Ken Cook counselled Gabriel who by all reports had a great experience in the country and blended in well at school and with all other activities undertaken during his stay. We look forward to the arrival of our new inbound student, Eugenie Coche from Belgium in July.Outbound student Laura Tibbetts returned back from Brazil with glowing reports of her experiences which included hang gliding. The exchange committee including Andrew Irvine, John Knight, Joe Savenije and myself interviewed outbound student Lu-Wei Spinks who has been accepted to go to Finland early next year.Special mention and thanks to George and Kay Thomas who have just completed their three year tenure as District Chairman of Youth Exchange. This has involved a mountain of work and they have been very supportive and helpful to us throughout the exchange process. The CSU Science Scholarship was awarded to Natasha Dooner studying Nutrition and Dietetics. Book prizes went to William Cole and Ronelle Phegan. The interviews were organized at the last minute and unfortunately, only Graham Burmeister and If were able to attend. Natasha is a very worthy and appreciative recipient of the scholarship. Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) was held at Borambola for Year 9 students staying over two nights in November. Neil Pinto once again organised proceedings for the District and was supported by our Club members Frank Fuller, Rick Priest, James McTavish, Greg Conkey and Peter Clucas.Wollundry also sponsored Laura Donaldson from TRAC to attend the National Youth Science Forum

held in January at ANU Canberra. This Forum is so competitive to gain entry involving a tough selection process for entry to the12 day event. Also in January we sponsored three Year 9 TRAC students to attend the Science Experience held over 3 days at Charles Sturt University. The Science and Engineering Challenge was held at the MTC, 1st March with 169 Wagga Wagga Students from six schools in attendance. Wollundry’s contribution saw John Ferguson with Peter McKinnon assist with the actual competition. They were supported with the event setup by Frank Fuller and Tim Barter.Stephanie McLoan of Wagga Wagga High School and Zachary Wells of the Riverina Anglican College were sponsored by Club and attended the Rotary Murray Darling School of Freshwater Research over six days in April. Also in April, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) week was held at Parkes. We proudly sponsored two young future leaders in Scott Lanarus and Sarah de Britt. We thank Rotarian Brent Pickard (our adopted member) for visiting RYLA on our behalf during the week. Wollundry sponsored six teams from Wagga Wagga High to the District Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) in May. One of these teams won the Cultural Award. Two teams are looking to progress further to Canberra.Wollundry continued sponsorship of the Noel Barnes Scholarship Program, awarded to Year 11 and 12 students of Wagga Wagga High Schools and Colleges. Thanks to Paul Milde, who coordinated the effort to make this program happen as he has done for a number of years. My year as Youth Director has been personally rewarding on a number levels in that it has allowed me to be involved with the club at Board level for the first time and be involved in all aspects of Youth within the club. Special thanks to Frank for the call up to the Board. Your support and direct involvement in a number of the activities throughout the year has been greatly appreciated.

Wollundry Rotary Club’s Annual Report - 11

Wollundry Rotarians are well known for their resourcefulness, work ethic and innovative thinking. Over the last 12 months these qualities have been amply demonstrated, with the major events being well organised and efficiently run. Managing public relations in this period has fortunately made extraordinarily straightforward due to the efforts of erstwhile Club members who have by their actions promoted the various rotary programmes, Sunday and Farmer’s Markets and our clubs’ premier event, the Food and Wine Festival. The various Directors responsible for these and other areas have taken a positive engagement strategy

with the community and have been quite rightly well received. The newspaper articles, radio interviews and television pieces have been well combined with targeted advertising to ensure the community understands what our club has achieved over time, and continues to do. My thanks to those who have willingly taken on this task. My particular thanks and congratulations to President Frank Fuller and the Board for yet another great year; I have learned much through their quietly confident leadership and comradeship.

MembershipReportDoug Conkey

It is with pleasure that I present the Membership Report for 2010/11. At the time of preparing the report our Club has 77 members - an increase of 3 for the year.

During the year we inducted 7 new members - Tim Barter, Ray Pankhurst, Bruce Spinks, Chris Metcalfe, Nick Heywood and Malcolm Robertson.

Our club has the largest membership in District 9700 with a wide spread of classifications and a well shaped age distribution.

The strength and depth of our membership allows the club to provide rosters for our markets which are not too onerous and time consuming.

During the year we held 2 “ Fireside Meetings” with good attendance and I want to especially thank Michael Knight for the meeting at his home where experienced and mature Rotarians explained to newer members some of the operational and history

details of Wollundry Rotary in a relaxed and informal environment.

Attendance figures for the year have been quite good with 6 members attaining 100%, 5 members complying with the Rule of 85 ( age 65 plus 20 years membership) and 28 other members achieving over 80% attendance.

In closing whilst our membership remains strong all members must look to retention of existing members and in attracting newer members who will provide vitality, variety and energy to Wollundry Rotary in order for us to maintain our position as a strong community organisation.

12 Wollundry Rotary Club’s Annual Report

Treasurer’sReportDavid Benn

This has been another busy and successful year for our club and we have experienced one of the wettest periods for many years, which has caused more interruptions than usual. However our Sunday and Farmers Markets, and Food and Wine Festival have once again provided us with, thanks to our hard working members, the funds to distribute back into our local Community and to vari-ous worthy Worldwide Rotary projects. One of the latter has been a substantial donation of $10,000 to ShelterBox following various disastrous events around the World. The Food and Wine Festival was a magnificent suc-cess and enabled us to donate $40,652 to the Willans Hill School. Sunday Markets will raise approximately $65,000 and The Farmers Market some $39,000. At the time of writing expenses are to be finalised but are well within acceptable limits and very similar to previous years. Our donations are detailed as usual at the back of this programme. After payment of accounts our Club Ac-count will have a balance of over $10,000. The Community Service Account balance will be over $15,000 after the distribution of donations and, subject to Board approval, transfer of $10,000 to our Special Purpose Account which will build it to some $45,000. We therefore have a very health balance sheet to hand over to the new Board. With the necessity for Wollundry to again report GST, for the first time this year, it has become very obvious that the treasurer’s job is not the traditional one as it has been in the past. To manage the treasurer’s role, without an accounting or bookkeeping background, will be out of the league

of many of us. Depending on what has to be done the Treasurer, can spend about 5/10 hours a week without the GST reporting duties. If the job can be split as has happened this year it is quite manageable. When you think about it, Wollun-dry is a very successful charitable organisation and there are many small businesses that would not turn over as much as we do.John Mason came to my rescue and has done a fantastic job helping me out with the GST reporting. As incoming Treasurer, John has spent many hours reorganising the way we will report in the future and believes that it will now be less time consuming. I can not thank John enough for the help he has been to me and hope to be able to repay him in his year. My thanks also must go to my fellow Board members and a special thank you to President Frank who has also been a tower of strength, encouragement and guidance over the whole period. My thanks also to my work colleagues particularly the Eldridge’s for putting up with the inevitable inter-ruptions from time to time. Last but not least, thank you fellows for your under-standing each week at the reception desk handing me the correct change and giving me a hand at short notice when required.Well that is about it, another very busy and successful year for Wollundry Rotary Club thanks to the dedi-cated and hard work put in by each and every one of you. Congratulations to Frank for another great year for Wollundry and my very best wishes to Doug and his incoming board for their year ahead.

cheques presented by the Club.
