PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

T he Club should be proud as on Sat 12/8/17 the Club received the “Partners in Service” Award from the St John’s Ambulance, Kawasan Pantai Selangor in a glittering ceremony thereby recog-

nizing the Club’s contributions to our community. The Club was also selected to participate in the RC Penang grand project to distribute much needed school uniform to deserving school children. The project title is “Rotary U-cemerlang school uniform project for the needy” On the 5th Aug the Pudu Rotaract Club had a successful and an enjoyable Installation attended by a big group of Pudu Rotarians to show support and enjoy the grand hospi-tality of our younger partners. Then on 20th Aug, 10 members attended the District “Membership Seminar” at the Holiday Place under our own Activity Week and they were sponsored by the Club. The Club had been active the last few weeks and all the avenue committee meetings were held as scheduled eg International, Club, Community, Youth and Vocational. In other words the Club has been moving forward! Just yesterday we had our Club Assembly (2nd of RY1718) at my place and there was a 1st Aid Presentation by ever-green couple of PP Dato Dr Lee Hoo Teong and his charming Ann Esther! Thank you Mr & Mrs evergreen! On a bit of news of our former Rotarians PP Chow Tain and PP Choy Ying. Both of them had been visited by our Rotarians and they reported that Chow Tian is now recover-ing at home as against being in a center and that Choy Ying is well enough to have a lunch outing with our Pudu Rotari-an visitors. Both of them can welcome visitors and I urge members to go see them and bring cheers! Get well my friends! At this juncture I sadly wish to announce the passing away of our old stalwart PP Teoh Chye Kiat at end of last month and his daughter Lyn had kindly donated RM10,000 to a memorial scholarship under the name of PP Teoh Chye Kiat. We had since sent a letter to thank her for her kind gesture. The Rotaract Movement is also moving ahead and now proud corporate partners of Airasia! This partnership “allows Rotaractors around the world to enjoy great bene-fits when flying Airasia to more than 120 destinations in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Middle East and the US.” This benefits are now extended to members of the Rotary Family! Congratulations to Rotaract! PP Gary is asking for support to attend the RC Bukit Bin-tang Installation on the 26/8/17 at the HGH Convention Center Sentul. So far a number has signed up and he is appealing for more participants from our Club. We will be having our fund raising event at end September under the Chairmanship of VP Patrick Lee. Please give your support when approach. Thank you in advance! On the matter of finance, a number of members have still yet to pay their subs and dues. Please make it easier for Treasurer Laura to do her job. Thank you guys!

I am of course pleased that the President has decid-

ed to continue using ClubRunner for our website

and Club data management for at least another

year. He has also made a decision that the digital

collections of our eBulletins from RY 2013-14 to RY

2016-17 (four years) be preserved as hardcopy docu-

ments to complement our existing collection of the Club

bulletins since its inception in 1966. That’s 50 years of

documentation.

For many of us, the written words and pictures now

available via the favourite social media—whatsapp—is

more than enough to keep us informed. Little that we

realise that unless we document these digital stuff in

hard copies, we’d soon be overwhelmed by the sheer

proliferation of these material in all formats and plat-

forms. What was thought to be the latest in the form of

CDs became DVDs, then thumb drives and CF then SD

then micro SDs. Thumb drives and SDs are competing

with each other for miniaturisation; and with that the

chances of “losing” your data gets much greater.

Although I was a very digital-oriented guy, I now real-

ise that hard copies are still needed to preserve our data

(meaning history) for posterity.

However, that does not mean that I have made a 180

degree turn. Digital data can be conveniently created

and stored in currently available media (hard disks or in

the cloud) with fast retrieval from anywhere in the

world via the internet. So, for any organisation con-

cerned about its data and its history, both systems are

needed.

Pictures and videos are very attractive media for keep-ing in digital format and stored or archived in the cloud. ClubRunner provides such facility. Therefore it is im-perative that our Club photographer upload these into ClubRunner; not only for archival purposes but for easy sharing (downloads) with Club members. Likewise Club officers and office-bearers should also make use of the wide range of facilities afforded by ClubRunner in the performance of their duties. For ex-ample, Club programmes and events, mass mailing of minutes of meetings or notices about meetings and events; and much much more. So far only the Attend-ance, Billing and Upload modules are utilised by the Attendance Chair, Hon Treasurer and Bulletin Editor respectively. We have had ClubRunner since RY 2014-15. But what a shame: until today, the reluctance to use or learn how to use it, is still prevalent.

DISTRICT NEWS

1,000,000 Organ Donors in RY2017-18 Every year 7,000 people are diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease in which treatment is only through kidney transplant. Currently, around 20,000 Malaysians are on the waiting list for an or-gan transplant. Diseases like diabetes, if left uncontrolled, can lead to kidney failure. 150,000 people dying every year but only 327,738 people who have pledged to be organ donors from 1997 to last year. Knowing those facts, DG Dr. Manohur believe we can make a difference to that number. After months of planning “ORGAN DONATION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN” is now ready. The team is led by Rtn Dr. Raj. He and his team are listed on Page 150 of the District handbook. They are waiting to assist you. We have 11 months left in this Rotary year. Let's make the 1,000,000 a reality. To pledge,go to:

RI NEWS

RI President Nominee 2019-20

Mark Daniel Maloney, of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Com-mittee for President of Rotary Interna-tional for 2019-20. He will be de-

clared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested. “The clubs are where Rotary happens,” says Maloney, an attorney. He aims to support and strengthen clubs at the community level, preserve Rotary’s culture as a service-oriented member-ship organization, and test new regional ap-proaches for growth. “With the eradication of polio, recognition for Rotary will be great and the opportunities will be many,” he says. “We have the potential to be-come the global powerhouse for doing good.” Maloney is a principal in the law firm of Black-burn, Maloney, and Schuppert LLC, with a focus on taxation, estate planning, and agricultural law. He represents large farming operations in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States, and has chaired the American Bar Association’s Committee on Agriculture in the section of taxa-tion. He is a member of the American Bar Asso-ciation, Alabama State Bar Association, and the Alabama Law Institute. He has been active in Decatur’s religious com-munity, chairing his church’s finance council and a local Catholic school board. He has also served as president of the Community Foundation of Greater Decatur, chair of Morgan County Meals on Wheels, and director of the United Way of Morgan County and the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce. A Rotarian since 1980, Maloney has served as an RI director; trustee and vice chair of The Rotary Foundation; president’s aide; zone coordinator; and a leader on the Future Vision and 2014 Syd-ney Convention Committees. He serves on the Operations Review Committee and has served on the Rotary Peace Centers Committee. He has received the Rotary Foundation Citation for Mer-itorious Service and Distinguished Service Award. Maloney and his wife, Gay, are Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and Bequest Soci-ety members

RI President 2018-19 Barry Rassin, of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2018-19. He will be declared the president-elect on 1 Septem-

ber if no challenging candidates have been sug-gested. As president, Rassin aims to strengthen our public image and our use of digital tools to maximize Rotary’s reach. “Those who know what good Rotary clubs do will want to be a part of it, and we must find new models for membership that allow all in-terested in our mission to participate,” he says. “With Rotary more in the public eye, we will attract more individuals who want to be part of and support a membership organization that accomplishes so much good around the world.” Rassin earned an MBA in health and hospital administration from the University of Florida and is the first fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives in the Bahamas. He recently retired after 37 years as president of Doctors Hospital Health System, where he con-tinues to serve as an adviser. He is a lifetime member of the American Hospital Association and has served on several boards, including the Quality Council of the Bahamas, Health Educa-tion Council, and Employer’s Confederation. A Rotarian since 1980, Rassin has served Rota-ry as director and is vice chair of The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees. He was an RI training leader and the aide to 2015-16 RI Pres-ident K.R. Ravindran. Rassin received Rotary's highest honor, the Service Above Self Award, as well as other humanitarian awards for his work leading Rota-ry’s relief efforts in Haiti after the 2010 earth-quake there. He and his wife, Esther, are Major Donors and Benefactors of The Rotary Founda-tion. Rassin’s nomination follows Sam F. Owori’s death in July, just two weeks into his term as Rotary International President-Elect.
