The Object of

Rotary 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Sharyn started the talk and presentation by informing the members in attendance a quick rundown about the Wirringga Scout Group and the different groups they have. Then Sharyn, along with the two scouts in attendance, Isaac & Sam, spoke about the Litter Audit (Street2Bay) project the Wirringga Scout Group has been involved in. We were informed that Approximately 80% of plastic pollution in Port Phillip Bay comes from suburban streets and enters Port Phillip Bay via stormwater drains, rivers and creeks. Microplastic (plastic pieces of 5 mm or less) can easily be swallowed by wildlife, including 1,300 native species living in and around Port Phillip Bay. This creates a significant problem when it enters the food chain. For example - anchovies are eating tiny pieces of ocean plastic, and because they are eaten by larger fish, the toxins in those microplastics could be transferred to fish consumed by humans. This applies to our fresh seafood, our canned fish, even packages of sea salt. Our society has these microplastic particles settling into their meal every day. The Street2Bay project was pioneered by 1st/14th Brighton Sea Scouts who have been addressing this since 2016. The Bayside venturers found microplastics while they were doing beach audits every month and were intrigued to investigate where it came from. They’ve worked with the Port Phillip Baykeeper, Neil Blake, doing regular microplastic beach audits at Holloway Bend, in Brighton to scientifically document smaller litter items. In May 2018, Scouts Victoria (led by Brighton Sea Scouts), in collaboration with the Port Phillip EcoCentre, launched a 2-year Victorian government funded project called Street2Bay (Litter Survey of The Port Phillip Bay Catchment) to investigate the source of microplastic pollution and types of litter entering the Bay. Scouts aged between 11-26 years old have been undertaking street audits every three months at 128 different street locations, covering six different street uses: Retail, Industrial, Residential, Parks, Sportsfields, and Public Buildings; focusing on three main zones: Footpaths, Grass and Mulch areas, and Gutters. 25 participating scout groups located across the region from Geelong to Mornington Peninsula, trained in a systematic audit method to record litter and microplastics. Street2Bay has collected data on litter distribution and types of litter in the Catchment and has developed a litter database to provide information for improving litter management strategies. What has been achieved so far?

➢ 25 Scout Groups participated across the Port Phillip Bay Catchment with more than 500 Scout members and leaders involved, accumulating more than 3,300 hours of work in the audits.

➢ 127 street audit sites and 546 litter audits have been completed. ➢ Scouts have collected close to 54,000 pieces of litter which have been categorised and

entered into the Street2Bay database. ➢ 74% of all the litter collected was plastics, including microplastics. ➢ 37% of that litter was cigarette butts, with a total number of 20,190.

The Wirringga Scouts audits have:

➢ Completed 20 street litter audits within 12 months. We have 3 sites in Oakleigh South and one in Clarinda. Our Public Building is Clarinda Primary School, our Retail site is Sidetracked on Huntingdale Rd, our Industrial site is a scrap metal recycling business also on Huntingdale Road, and our Park is Talbot Park on Centre Road.

➢ In their audits 3,455 items of litter were collected and categorised and entered into the Street2Bay database.

Attached are some graphs presented on the night.

Joke of the Week A New York attorney representing a wealthy art collector called and asked to speak to his client. “Jim, I have some good news and I have some bad news." The art collector replied, "You know, I've had an awful day, Jack, so let's hear the good news first." The lawyer said, "Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she has invested only $5,000 in two very nice pictures that she thinks will bring somewhere between $15 and $20 million ... and I think she could be right." Jim replied enthusiastically, "Holy cow! Well done! My wife's a brilliant business woman, isn't she? You've just made my day. Now, I know I can handle the bad news. What is it?" The lawyer replied, "The pictures are of you and your secretary."

Rotary International News

Rotarian Tunji Funsho named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the world by Ryan Hyland

Dr. Tunji Funsho, chair of Rotary’s Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, joins 100 pioneers, artists, leaders, icons, and titans as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People. TIME announced its 2020 honorees during a 22 September television broadcast on ABC, recognizing Funsho for his instrumental leadership and work with Rotary members and partners to achieve the eradication of wild polio in the African region. He is the first Rotary member to receive this honor for work toward eradicating polio. A Rotarian for 35 years, Funsho is a member of the Rotary Club of Lekki, Nigeria, past governor of District 9110, and serves on Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. Funsho is a cardiologist and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London. He lives in Lagos, Nigeria with his wife Aisha. They have four children; Habeeb, Kike, Abdullahi and Fatima; and five grandchildren.

TIME 100 comprises individuals whose leadership, talent, discoveries, and philanthropy have made a difference in the world. Past honorees include Bono, the Dalai Lama, Bill Gates, Nelson Mandela, Angela Merkel, Oprah Winfrey, and Malala Yousafzai. “I’m honored to be recognized by TIME for my part in ensuring that no child in Africa will ever again be paralyzed by wild polio, a disease that once disabled 75,000 African children every single year,” said Funsho. “Eradicating the wild poliovirus in Africa was a team effort that required cooperation and dedication of governments, partners, Rotary members, hundreds of thousands of health workers, and countless parents who chose to have their children vaccinated against polio.” As the chair of Rotary’s Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, since 2013 Funsho has led PolioPlus efforts in the country, building upon the work of his predecessors. He has worked alongside Rotarians in Nigeria to raise awareness about the importance of polio immunization, encouraged governments and public figures to support polio eradication, and served as a vocal leader and advocate for Rotary and its fight to end polio. He works closely with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative partner organizations: the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. As a member of Nigeria’s Presidential Task Force on Polio, he has coordinated immunizations and advocacy campaigns with the Minister of State for Health and the Inter-Agency Coordination Committee for Polio Eradication. He has also worked closely with the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation, the Dangote Foundation, the Traditional Leaders Council and the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria. In August 2019, Nigeria reached three years without a case of wild poliovirus. Nigeria’s progress, led by Rotary, its partners and local and national governments, was the result of decades of sustained efforts, including domestic and international financing, the commitment of hundreds of thousands of health workers, and innovative strategies to immunize children who previously couldn’t be reached due to insecurity in the country’s northern states. On 25 August, the African region was certified wild polio-free. This historic announcement means that five of the WHO’s six regions, representing more than 90 percent of the world’s population, are now free of the wild poliovirus. The virus is still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan. With Africa’s milestone, Rotary and its partners took a major step forward toward their goal of global eradication. Funsho told TIME magazine of the achievement: “The polio eradication program in Nigeria has gone through some difficult times, but I never once doubted that this day would come. Any time that we’ve experienced a setback, Rotary and our partners have been able to find solutions and develop strategies for reaching vulnerable children.” He added: “One thing I know for certain, is if Nigeria could eliminate the wild poliovirus, any country can eliminate it.”
