Our Quote of the week "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you'll landamong the stars."
Our Membership Information evening was a fantastic success and thanks toeveryone involved, but particularly Paul Kounnas and the Membership Committeeand all those who spoke so eloquently about their Rotary experience and journey. The feedback from AG Geoff Roberts was very positive and the guests I spoke tovery much enjoyed the evening commenting on the warmth and friendship in theroom and a number are interested in joining with one definitely signing up so far. Just a few things worthy of mention:
Our next meeting on the 26 August is our birthday meeting and is a partner'snight and promises to be a fun packed night with a variety of things goingon, including a presentation from Sean Gurney on his RYLA experience, abrief presentation on the District Conference from Tony Monley atTemplestowe who is on the District Conference Organising Committee and asurprise birthday treat dreamed up by Tony Robinson. We are approaching the time when we need to establish a NominatingCommittee to put forward members for key Rotary positions next year and

I'll be asking for representation from two members at the meeting nextweek. The Board met after the last meeting and the minutes will be circulated indue course - the Farmer's Market process is progressing with an applicationmade to Council to hold it at Finns Reserve. We have confirmed our input tothe Police Multicultural day on 11 October 2009, where we will have aninformation stall and will be doing the food. Request for support frommembers will be going out shortly.
The Ashes The Ashes is reaching a climax as I write and I have to try and not be too smug -just in case the near impossible happens and Australia score over 500 to win -needless to say with England's performance and my football team, Arsenal, beingtop of the Premier League at the moment I am pretty happy and probably in for afew more fines - is there a record for most fines served on a President? So with the Ashes over I need another theme for a few weeks and will start with abrief column on interesting facts and observations. Interesting Facts and Observations:
1. If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air,the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air the persondied as a result of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legson the ground, the person died of natural causes.
2. Bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laser printers were allinvented by women.
3. Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next Wednesday and in themeantime have a great week and remember The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands. Your PresidentChris Potter

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL SPOTby Russell Gurney
Membership increases during 2008-09 RotaryBy Jennifer Lee Atkin In a year of economic havoc that rocked global markets and shook consumerconfidence, Rotary International's most important asset - its members - steadily grew. As of 30 June, the end of the 2008-09 RI year, there were 1,234,527 members in33,790 Rotary clubs. That's an increase of 3,044 members and 520 clubs from theprevious year. "Businesses in tough economies plan how to grow, and most businesses then dogrow. Rotary clubs also have to plan for their futures and take action on those plans,"said Mike McGovern, chair of RI's Membership Development and RetentionCommittee. "New clubs are forming in communities with existing clubs by offering alternativetimes and the opportunity to bring fresh perspectives to Rotary," McGovern added. More than 5,700 clubs in the 534 RI districts achieved a membership growth rate of10 percent or better during the 2008-09 year. The 10 percent goal was set by 2008-09 RI President Dong Kurn Lee, who presided over 12 presidential membershipconferences held on six continents during the year. Each conference was attended bybetween 300 and 1,500 Rotarians. Lee also made personal calls to each of Rotary'sdistrict governors. "We must reach out to people who are different from us and from the members in ourclub, because this is the way to a stronger club with more connections and betterpotential," Lee said at the 2009 International Assembly in San Diego, California,USA. Rotary clubs must continue to build membership during the 2009-10 year, said RIPresident John Kenny. "I will simply rely on you, as responsible people, to see to it that we have morequalified members, true Rotarians, at the end of the year than we had at thebeginning. And I will rely on you to do your best to see to the mentoring of ournewest members, for retention is no less important than recruitment," Kenny toldRotarians at the RI Convention in Birmingham, England. "Rotary grows when members are motivated to invite Rotarians into their clubs andwhen Rotarians believe they are contributing to a greater good," McGovern said. Districts with outstanding growth. Rotary International recognized several districts for achieving outstandingmembership growth in 2008-09. Three RI districts have been cited for chartering two or more new clubs, while alsoachieving a 10 percent or better net membership increase in at least half of thedistrict's clubs: * District 3790, Philippines * District 3830, Philippines * District 3870, Philippines Ten districts have been recognized for chartering two or more new clubs while alsoachieving a net membership growth percentage rate that is among the top 10 districtsworldwide: * District 1290, England * District 3100, India * District 3150, India
