Our Quote of the week "Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchinibread and pumpkin pie."

ensure we get through the Board meeting efficiently and are updated oneverything that is happening? On the potential joint meeting with Templestowe and Nunawading, andpotentially a number of other clubs, to have a presentation on Interplast fromtwo of the surgeons involved. Russell has sent an e-mail around tomembers to vote on whether we would be happy to replace our standardmeeting with this event so please respond as soon as possible. The cost is$40 and this will be a partner's night. There would currently not appear to bemuch support for this but a number of members have still not responded. As I mentioned at the last meeting there are two District Seminars comingup - one on the 27 September, New Generations, which is a greatopportunity to learn more about Rotary Youth programmes and the other on18 October, Foundation, which has lots of information about the fundraisingand grant arrangements within Rotary - both of these events are highlyrecommended and further details will be in the bulletin or on the website. The Multicultural Day is not far off on the 11 October 2009 and we need upto 12 people to man the roster for the day - please nominate for the eventon the website as soon as possible if you are able to provide support.

Finally, we are now almost three months into my Presidential year and I would liketo thank everyone for all the support they have given. I would also welcome anyfeedback on either the club meetings, activities in the club, the bulletin, the websiteor anything else in terms of comments or suggestions you wish to make. Interesting Facts, Observations and Comments - The Last one for now:

1. In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmerto sleep on. Hence the phrase "good night sleep tight."

2. In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind yourpints and quarts, and settle down." It's where we get the phrase "mind yourP's and Q's".

3. Why is there a light in the fridge and not in the freezer?4. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand.5. 42.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.6. Some more interesting anagrams - DORMITORY = DIRTY ROOM, THE

EYES = THEY SEE, ANIMOSITY = IS NO AMITY, A DECIMAL POINT = IMA DOT IN PLACE, THE EARTHQUAKES = THAT QUEER SHAKE, andfinally MOTHER IN LAW = WOMAN HITLER

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next Wednesday and in themeantime have a great week and remember The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands. Your PresidentChris Potter

Attendance: 68%; 13 Members; 8 Guests; 0 Makeups

President Chris welcomed everyone to a special meeting where previous"guests" David Ellis (accompanied by Judy), and Michelle Cray (accompanied byPeter) would be inducted as members. A warm welcome was extended toDavid's father and long standing Rotarian (RC of Kew), Archibald Ellis, as well asGeoff Boult, Kerryn Jude, and AG Geoff Roberts.

Pres Chris reminded members about:1. The BBQ Fundraiser this Saturday2. The Twylight Disco this Saturday3. The potential change of meeting venue 28 October (being surveyed via

email)4. The New Generations Seminar 27 September (see web site)5. The Foundation Seminar 8 October (see web site)6. The Board Meeting after the next Meeting. (Reports sought asap)

Chris then formally inducted David Ellis and Michelle Cray as members of ourClub. David will be mentored by Anthony Jude and Michelle by Chris himself.

PE Roger Reece then introduced our guest speaker for the evening, our veryown Esther Murray. Memories of the candle lit ambiance that we had the last time Esther spoke tous were quickly forgotten as she fired up her power point presentation on theManningham Community Health Services [MCHS] organisation for which Estheris the CEO. (and Roger is Chairman of the Board)

In a very informative presentation, we learned that MCHS is a not for profithealth service for the Manningham Community operating from four locations. It has a large podiatry department and provides early intervention services forchildren. It also provides a wide range of other services for men, women andchildren including counselling, diabetes, dietetics and nutrition, occupationaltherapy, physiotherapy, psychology, speech pathology and a Stride ForwardEarly Intervention program. The Men's Health program (Men's Shed) has been operating for over 10 years, and a volunteer transport service (100+ people) provides much needed logisticssupport to many in the community.

MCHS Strategic Plan places particular emphasis on Mental Health, Children'ssupport (6-12), Falls Prevention (65+ and 85+), as well as a "Life Project" aimedat potential diabetes sufferers in the 40-49 year age bracket. No surprise that there is a waiting list for each service, however people canaccess services by self-referral, or via schools or by a GP. Our cultural diversityis catered for by staff being skilled in many languages. We also learned that we can become members of MCHS by paying a smallannual fee. This allows a closer linkage to the organisation itself and somevoting rights at the AGM. Volunteer drivers, and those that may wish to helpwith the Men's Shed and Art Group, should contact Esther, the MSHS or viewtheir web site: http://www.mannchs.org.au/. We thanked Esther for her informative presentation and left for the eveningwith the feeling that our community is fortunate to have Roger and Estherleading this crucial service.

Although the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has faced soberingchallenges in the past year, officials say it is moving forward in key political, technical, financial, and operational areas. Stepped-up efforts to end the disease in the four endemic countries --Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan -- are paying off, they say. "Rotary International has played an extraordinarily special role [in the GPEI],not just as one of the initiators but in bringing financial resources, politicaladvocacy, and volunteerism on the ground to getting the job done," said Dr.Bruce Aylward, director of the GPEI at the World Health Organization, speaking to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in June. Aylward said that all levels of government in the four countries are committingunprecedented support for the polio eradication effort by monitoring theperformance of immunization activities and holding local authoritiesaccountable for the results. According to WHO, the incidence of polio in India in 2009 has dropped by 28percent to 284 cases as of 8 September, compared with 397 cases over thesame period a year ago. Monthly immunization campaigns in the highest-riskareas have reduced wild poliovirus type 1 -- the more dangerous of the tworemaining strains -- to record lows. Type 1 causes paralysis in about 1 out ofevery 200 children infected, versus 1 out of every 1,000 children with type 3. In Nigeria, the incidence of polio has decreased by 41 percent to 379 cases, from 646 cases a year ago. By early 2009, the proportion of unimmunizedchildren in the highest-risk states had fallen below 10 percent for the first time. Unrest along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border has resulted in a slight increasein the number of cases in both countries in the past year. Between large-scaleimmunization campaigns, however, teams have exploited lulls in the conflict toenter normally inaccessible areas and give children an additional dose ofvaccine. In Afghanistan, the wild poliovirus is endemic only in the south, andabout 80 percent of children live in polio-free areas. Rotarians in Pakistan have encouraged the national government to give strongsupport to ending polio. In early 2009, Pakistan launched the Prime Minister'sAction Plan for Polio Eradication. On behalf of Rotary International in August,International PolioPlus Committee Chair Robert S. Scott recognized Pakistan'spresident, Asif Ali Zardari, with a Polio Eradication Champion Award for hisoutstanding support for a polio-free world. Read more A new vaccine will be introduced in India as early as November to help stopthe transmission of the type 1 and type 3 wild polioviruses. (Type 2 has beeneradicated globally except in Nigeria.) This bivalent vaccine, health officialsbelieve, will multiply the gains made during the past year toward eradicatingpolio. Intended to complement, not replace, monovalent and trivalent vaccinesalready in use, the bivalent vaccine will also be considered for Afghanistan,Nigeria, and Pakistan. Worldwide, the number of polio cases has dropped from more than 350,000 in1988, when the GPEI began, to 1,651 in 2008. "This is a great improvement from the worst days of polio epidemics," saidRotary Foundation Trustee Chair Glenn E. Estess Sr. "But it is not goodenough, and it will not be good enough until the number is zero. We cannotpause or slacken our efforts." Global health experts are calling the push to end polio "the final inch," in lightof the remaining 1 percent of cases that are the most difficult and expensive toprevent. Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge, which ends 30 June 2012, is seenas crucial to the initiative's success. "This is an absolutely devastating disease that affects the poorest, mostmarginalized communities in the world," Aylward said. "We have the tools to
