On the Cover

Australia Day, 26 January, is the biggest day of celebration in the nation. On Australia Day we celebrate the things that make our country great.

It is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788

Though 26 January marks this specific event, today Australia Day celebrations reflect contemporary Australia: our diverse society and landscape, our remarkable achievements and our bright future. It also is an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history, and to consider how we can make Australia an even better place in future. At its core, Australia Day is a day driven by communities, and the celebrations held in each town, suburb or city – unified by the celebration of what’s great about Australia and being Australian – are the foundation of its ongoing success

Please welcome Matthew and Luke Baker

Blast from the past - the year 1997 – 1998 President Rod Mackenzie

RI President Glen Kinross set the theme for the year when he asked all Rotarians to 'Show Rotary Cares".

Our Club certainly did that. With a variety of programme and press coverage, that showed our community that the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek cares.

This year with the participation of all our members we were able to increase our programmes and public awareness. We added these to an already very respectable list of activities, that any Rotary Club would be proud of, let alone a club of seventeen, as we were for most of the year.

"Making A Difference" is an annual programme run by the Diamond Valley Secondary College and supported by this Rotary Club which was able to get off to a great start. Students worked for half a day in Diamond Creek community service e.g. nursing home and child minding centres. Our Courtesy and Kindness Awards continued this year with two presentation nights Awards were presented to Jock and Jean Ryan in September and Rod Holland in December.

Brendan Donahoo our Youth Exchange Student returned from Brazil and joined us at the District Conference.

National Youth Science Forum this year saw Rory Carson spend two weeks at the University

Again this year our club has completed in excess of the required tasks needed to receive the Presidential Citation Award.

Town Fair was our main fundraiser for the year with the club raising $3,400.00 on the day

J anuary is Rotary Awareness Month and it is the responsibility of all of us to make the community more conscious of

our great organisation. We need to be Ambassadors for Rotary. Public opinion of Rotary is high – but how many people really have any idea of what we do? What do we represent? What are our ideals? It is up to each and every one of us to be an Ambassador for Rotary and to spread the word. As a club, we are endeavouring to create an awareness of Rotary in our local area in a number of ways. Signs are being placed on previous Rotary projects, branding is being given a higher priority for any new project that we undertake such as the Sails for Diamond Creek Primary School or the Shelter for the Riding for the Disabled Program at the Diamond Valley Special Development School. We are lifting our profile by working with other local community organisations such as the Men’s Shed or being invited by Nillumbik Shire Council to do the BBQ at the opening of Diamond Valley Community Stadium. We are promoting our activities through the local press. But we need to do more! We need to look at new audiences. Rotary is an ageing organisation and unfortunately when people retire, they lose their networks. Our Pride of Workmanship night was a fine example of where we

displayed our wares to a new audience. Each of the recipients brought workmates, family and friends. Whilst these people may not join Rotary, we have spread the word further, and they, in turn, will spread the word about their award. Let us look at sponsoring other groups – ones to which we have not previously make inroads. Perhaps we can look at working on joint programs with other organisations. Let us think about a scholarship or award at our local Secondary School. It is up to all of us to start thinking of other groups where we can promote Rotary – and at the same time assist with a worthwhile project. In our everyday lives, let all of us spread the word. We are all representing Rotary and even though many of our accomplishments are visible in the community, let us make it more so. Let’s get out there and sell! Alan Jones

what happened last week ? Rob L & President Alan J welcomed everyone to the first meeting for 2012.

Linda G started off with grace and Geoff Swan did the Toast.

Apologies were: Tina, Ern, John & Eileen, David, Jacqui & Peter.

There were no make-ups and no visiting Rotarians.

Alan White introduced our guests: the guest speaker, Leigh Marshall, and Carol Founaris, (potential member).

President Alan announced that the Rotary Club of Moreland had asked him to publicise their Australia Day Breakfast. This year Steve Mayne - Activist is the guest speaker. Contact President Alan if you require details.

Mental Health First Aid Course - Rotary has contract to run courses - 28 completed and need additional 32 prior to June. Rotary has received Government funding, however there will be a nominal charge of $30 per participant for manual.

Rod Mackenzie mentioned the BBQ for the opening of the new Diamond Valley Community Stadium on the 11th February at 11.30 - 1.30pm. (Editor's Note - now Friday 10th) Rod has passed on Alan J's contact details to Council to discuss BBQ preparations. Bev, Rod Mc, Linda, Sharraine, Phil C, John Egan, Rob L, Alan W, Alan J, Steve, Pat and Greg. Rod also brought up for discussion that we possibly need to purchase a small fridge instead of car fridges/eskys, for food handling and OH&S issues.

Rod McKenzie spoke to the club about OH&S - current Federal Government legislation which is still to be implemented in Victoria, though it has been implementd in NSW and Queensland.

Rod said that we as a club handle OH&S very well. Volunteer organisations will be treated the same as big businesses and also liable to any penalties. District will hopefully take up the issue of OH&S. Our Club needs to address these changes. Rod suggested that a Committee be formed to protect ourselves and move forward.

Minutes need to reflect votes and include the voting - listing names. Any function needs to be approved and voted on. Always have documentation of what the club does. Minutes very important. Maureen McKenzie is our Insurance / OH&S Representative.

President Alan J introduced the Chairman for the evening Roger Knight. Roger introduced the Sergeant, Rob Lloyd who ran his session.

Roger introduced the Guest Speaker who is the new Co-ordinator of the Diamond Creek Men's Shed. Leigh Marshall spoke about the Men's Shed being a place where men can make new mates in a positive, peaceful and harmonious environment. The Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA) was established in 2007 as a resource centre for community Men's Sheds around Australia. A new phenomenon has come to Diamond Creek - The Men's Shed has arrived and is growing. The basic premise of each Men's Shed is to provide a local, informal location where the men of a community can spend time engaged in manual crafts such as woodworking, metal working or the restoration of old furniture, objects, machines, etc. The shed is a place for men to be socially active and form friendships, and allows new opportunities for activity and interaction in their lives post-work. Questions were asked of Leigh and Roger thanked him for coming and presented him with a Guest Speaker glass. He handed the chair back to President Alan J.

Alan J announced that next week will be Club Assembly as well as an Australia Day Presentation developed by Greg. He needs a small boy to participate so Bev is going to ask her grandson Matthew to come along.

Phil C won the raffle. Profit: $42 and Rob was successful with fines of $32.

Greg announced that he has completed the “Annual Return by Fundraiser” For the year December 2 2010 to December 2 2011 , $128,704.51 & $24,762.58 surplus, combining the Charity and Town Fair Accounts

Roster is in the Bulletin.

Meeting Closed.

My Country by Dorothea Mackellar - 1885-1968, written in 1904

"My Country" is an iconic patriotic poem about Australia, written by Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968) at the age of 19 while homesick in England. After travelling through Europe extensively with her father during her teenage years she started writing the poem in London in 1904 and re-wrote it several times before her return to Sydney. The poem was first published in the London Spectator in 1908 under the title "Core of My Heart". It was reprinted in many Australian newspapers, quickly becoming well known and establishing Mackellar as a poet.

Mackellar's family owned substantial properties in the Gunnedah district of New South Wales and a property (Torryburn) in the Paterson district. The inspiration for her poems undoubtedly came from the time she spent on the rural properties as a child. The famous poem is believed to have been directly inspired by witnessing the break of a drought when she was at Torryburn; My Country uses metaphorical imagery to describe the land after the breaking of a long drought. Of ragged mountain ranges possibly refer to the Mount Royal Ranges, and the Barrington Tops.

The first stanza refers to England, and the fact that the vast majority of Australians of that era were of British birth or ancestry. Most Australians are generally not aware of this first stanza even though the
