THE PRESIDENTIAL CROSS CHAT XRAY STEVE

I missed last Tuesday’s meeting but from what I have heard it

was a great evening with an enthralling speaker and the whole

night very capably led by PP PHF PE Bev Baker. Thankyou Bev.

The only downside that I have heard is the usual problem with

our mid-winter meetings and that is small attendance – not

sure how we overcome the winter blues!!!!

This Monday evening is our regular Board meeting but we will

be down on numbers here as well due to some Board members

hosting our New Zealand visitors but we will do our best. That of

course means that Tuesday evening is our monthly Club

Assembly so if you have any “Rotary business” please bring it

along to either the Board meeting or Club assembly. Remember

– we are looking for new projects from local to international as

well as new members.

Tasmanian agricultural scientist, Bruce French, has spent 30 years on a voluntary mission to document information on the food plants of the world. This achievement is underpinned by Bruce¹s work in developing countries, including Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Bruce has established a plain English database of 24,000 edible plants. The database contains descriptions, countries and climatic zones of the plants¹ origins, photos and drawings of entire plants and edible parts, and cooking methods. The database includes nutritional information on each plant. The information in the food plants database can be reproduced in a number of formats including CD, DVD, books and PowerPoint presentations. Rotarian Buz Green, of the Rotary Club of Devonport North in Tasmania (D9830), recognised the potential of the food plants database in the war against malnutrition. He organised a relationship between

the organisation behind the food plants database, Food Plants International, and Rotary to establish the LearnGrow project.

LearnGrow was formally established as the project vehicle in June 2007. Since June 2007, Buz Green and Bruce French, with the support of the LearnGrow committee, Rotary and other volunteers,

have transformed LearnGrow from a concept into a dynamic international project that has come to

the attention of Rotary and organisations tackling malnutrition around the world.

UPCOMING EVENT NOT TO MISS

Club Meeting 2nd October

From car bombings to meeting Yasser Arafat and making it to the summit of Mount Everest, Mark ‘Squiz’ Squirrell has experienced more

than many can dream about. When he headed to the East Timor Crisis in 1999 he was setting out on the adventure of a lifetime. It was a journey that would see him navigate some of the globes most brutal war zones to deliver emergency aid and conquer the worlds tallest mountain.

Awarded the coveted “Green Beret” in his role as a commando with the Australian Special Forces, Squiz burned with a passion to put his skills to good use. His enthusiastic innocence was lost as the harsh reality of life in the emergency zone hit home. His aid work took him to countries such as Sudan, Palestine and Afghanistan where he met child soldiers, negotiated with rebels and narrowly escaped imprisonment.

To raise awareness he ran the Athens marathon dressed in an Afghan burkha and put together an adventure team, comprising an Israeli and Palestinian. To top it off, Squiz battled thin air, freezing temperatures and malfunctioning equipment to raise the United Nations World Food Programme flag on top of the world. Whether you enjoy vicariously riding the rapids of someone’s hazardous voyage through life, or whether you want to be inspired by the determination of a man who dared to dream,

So this is Eileen’s Project eh Mr President
