Meeting held at Phil Johnson’s Property It was a very cool evening but Colin had the wood fire cranked up outside on which he was
cooking some nice Kranski Sausages to keep us warm while we enjoyed some fellowship
before our meeting.
President Elect Ray Perkins opened the meeting thanking Phil Johnson for allowing us to
hold our meeting at his premises and also for his talk on V8 Racing Cars later on in the
evening. An application had been made to the Green Seed not for profit people who were
offering a free grant for the month of July but unfortunately our application didn't get past 2nd
base a bit like Brazil in the soccer.
We have been asked to apply for some District Grant money that is available so we need to
work out which projects we can apply for.
Next weeks meeting will be at Cafe Elixir, our numbers will be low due to many on holidays but
Taylor assures me that it will be fine. 100% attendance would be appreciated from the
members that are available to attend.
Graeme Smith is going to show some slides of his trip through Turkey and he is hoping Akin
will still be available to attend and comment on some of the attractions.
International: Debbie Singh; she explained how she had just had to go back to Thailand
again :) She explained that we had finally got the container up to Mai Sot and it was just
absolutely amazing to see it arrive. The BCMF had notified some of the families that it was
arriving and the kids were sitting there with their mums that had travelled from areas days
away. There is going to be a DVD produced showing the arrival and presentation of some of
the wheelchairs etc and also the process of producing and packing them prior to being
transported. For the 166 wheelchairs it cost us $34.20 per chair to get to Thailand so it was
well worth it. Money well spent. Debbie thanked us for our support.
Colin Griffiths has received an email from Dot Newton about the Riding for the Disabled on
Pinjar road are in need of a bore replacement. They have had quotes but we may be able to do
this job at a reduced cost. Colin is going to be away for a couple of weeks so will start investi-
gating and working out whether we can assist in any way. This could be a good local project.
5 acres of grass is in desperate need of the bore water.
Owen Douglas: Membership; Anson was on his way home at 11.55pm Saturday evening
after having to resort his 30 kg baggage allowance with moving some items to carryon luggage.
He was very sad to leave us and again passed on his thanks to the club for the past year.
Owen has made contact with the applicant that Graeme had put onto him and will make a time
to sit down and have a chat when available. Owen mentioned that Helen's boss had been
asked to join the Joondalup Rotary Club however she lives in Tapping so we are a lot closer.
She will come along to one of our meetings and see how we go.
We have to put our heads together and ask ourselves what attracted us to Rotary and how can
we attract new members.
Tom Drinkwater: Attendance; Peter is away at present and is not sure if he will be able
to get back for our special night on the 18th August at the Belgrade Village. All of the planning
has been done and we are pretty well all set. There is a limit to the number of tickets available and it
will be an all ticket affair all paid for before the evening so that there is no handling of money on the
evening. All tickets must be paid for and if you don't have a ticket you wont be able to get in.
The cost is $30.00 for an extensive menu including drinks.
The mayor of Wanneroo will be there along with some councillors and also 36 residents and the
executive members of Elderbloom. It should be a great night and we want it to be a Fellowship night
and a fun night with a bit of the history of the place with the help of a couple of the residents that
have been there a long time. We will be making a presentation to Elderbloom for the 2 walking
Frames that we donated to the hospital and will also talk about the Dolphin Race if possible.
We will also talk about where the club is going and what local projects we hope to work on in the
City of Wanneroo.
This evening is also targeted at trying to attract new members as all of the residents have younger
grown up children that may be prospective members.
There are 28 tickets for our club and it is a Partners Night.
Neil Cook: Mentioned to the members the spread for tonight and to help ourselves. Hot
chicken, rolls and a couple of salads care of Alina Griffiths.
Vocational Speaker: Phil Johnson
Phil Johnson gave us his talk on the V8 super cars that he has in his workshop and spoke about the
V8 drive days that they hold and most people are 40 plus, the oldest driver was 87 and she was a
lady and could only drive an automatic.
They have a brake system on the passenger side and also an ignition cutoff switch. On a V8 drive
day you go down to the track, sign in, and do a drivers briefing were it is explained to you all of the
ins and outs of driving and where to hold the steering wheel and do 2 laps around the track with a
normal road car explaining about the markers and apexes on the corners so that you know exactly
where to go on the track.
This is before you jump into the drivers seat and then you do 2 laps with an instructor alongside you.
The instructors are either state or national champions we don't just have Joe Blogs going along with
you.
Then we do the hot laps with you in the passenger side with one of the drivers and wow, we have a
USB recording of the track and of you to show you all of the screaming and carrying on from you
and also record the speed so that you cant BS to your mates.
Most people hit between 90km to 205km coming over the hill and the G forces which blows a lot of
people away just going around a corner,
you just wouldn't believe how even the V8
utes just hang on around the corners.
Just seeing the smiles on the peoples
faces as they come out of the cars keeps
him doing what he is doing.
It is a fantastic feeling to see that you
have fulfilled someones bucket list.
We do Corporate Drive Days with BBQ's etc to make it a fun filled day which is better than
Corporate Golf Days and Skydiving etc. Why would you like to jump out of a good plane?
Phil explained that one day he went with his wife to go skydiving only to find that 110kg was the
cutoff weight so he couldn't go..... Yippeee He was so happy.
The costs for a race day are quite high as there is the cost fo the track, an ambulance is required
and there is 22 staff. To make a quid out of that they have a sausage sizzle on the day with coffee
or a cool drink for $5.00 and in Pit Lane we have all the marquees and flags up so we try and make
it a very exciting day.
Phil explained a lot about the cost of the tyres they use, brakes and other maintenance items that
make it a very expensive sport. They have 13 cars in all.
With racing it is usually the people at the front are not the ones with the talent it is usually the ones
with the money.
Phil is very proud of his son as no matter what he races either the utes or sedans he is always 1st
2nd or 3rd at the front of the race. He bought his son a ride at Bathurst and for the 2 day event it
cost about $100,000. Most people have no idea what the costs are.
In closing Phil said that he has had the hard times in his life but with that along comes the good so
all is fine.
Neil Cook presented Phil with our Rotary Pride of Workmanship plaque with our appreciation for his
hospitality and information about the V8 Race Days.
We closed the meeting and visited Phil’s Bar that is quite unique.
I propose as per last year that the Club buys a $50.00 ticket
and the winner of that ticket will be drawn from those
members that have paid their club Dues by the 31st July 2014
