MEETING AT THE WANNEROO TAVERN 28th OCTOBER 2013

President Norm welcomed all members, our exchange students and our guest speaker for

the evening Rod Greene.

Secretary: Graeme Smith Received a couple of letters regarding the bushfire appeals. Clive

has put forward a suggestion to send $500.00 for this good cause.

President Norm: He has reviewed the flurry of emails last week and just wanted to check that

he only asked one question :). We have the same meal format this evening so we will review

next week if we proceed in this manner.

Our condolences to Phil Cousins and his family as he has just lost his Father In Law last

Friday.

President Norm stressed the urgent need to find a President Elect.

There is a Rotary Leadership Institute session coming up and Ray Perkins is enrolled for this

course. Anyone is welcome to attend this session.

We also have a Foundation Seminar as well and this is a must attend for one person and Ray

has again put his name up for that but would urge other members to attend this as more than

one can attend.

International: Debbie Singh; she spent 3 days up in Chang Mai with this project and has

deposited the money she has raised which is up to $6,800.00 at this time and working at

getting to $10,000.00 I am going to be holding a garage sale at my place on Sunday 24th

November. I have got some friend volunteers to assist so if anyone can assist and also donate

any items that would be worth selling please drop them off.

The project in Chang Mai is getting well and truly organised and should be close to completion

about mid January and I hope to be up there again to assist with decorating the kids quarters

etc. Arts and crafts, market garden and some meditation.

Debbie will be giving a full presentation in a couple of weeks time. With the Banksia United I

have had some T shirts and Caps made in Thailand. We also have the awards night coming

up and that is a week on Friday at the Carramar Community Centre and if anyone would like

to come along it will be an informal affair with the presentation of awards and there will also be

a buffet made by the coaches and the parents with possibly a Kangaroo Stew and other

things.

Christmas Hampers, we did about 15 hampers for St Anthony's and will we be doing this again

this year.

Director of Youth: Grumpy Owen Douglas; He had been approached about Rotary in the

past distributing old unused prescription glasses. Owen is going to look into this again as we

may have many old glasses just sitting around as we have had new prescriptions with newer

glasses. He will follow up on this.

Page 4: Rotary bulletin 17 2013

Exchange Student: Anson; He has been in Australia 3 months and 2 weeks and last week

he went to Kings Park. They went to the water garden and the thing beside the pool. When

they went near the pool there was a person asleep in a tent. Anson figured he liked to live

with nature and enjoy the fresh air. Kings Park is really beautiful and next time we will go to

Queens Park. Owen mentioned that at the quiz night Anson was really stressed about

answering some questions.

Exchange Student: Akin; Akin went to the beach last week and had a good time. President

Norm mentioned that it would be good if we could take the exchange students out for a meal

or to any destination that would be interesting for them.

Raffle: 1st Prize Owen Douglas 2nd Prize Debbie Singh

Sergeants Session: Phil Cousins; Fines for raffle winners, Uncle Tom for his finished patio,

Paul for his swanky boots and after forgetting he had his socks in his pocket, Neil for having a

fly drinking his beer, Debbie for visiting us from Thailand and customs giving her a red flag lol,

Andrew for having a split lip, Rotary pins that were missing, shirts don't count, Phil fined him-

self for only doing half a Cape to Cape. Sir Grumpy is back in town as he taught someone

that was collecting money a lesson. Colin went fishing instead of attending a meeting due to a

fishing trip.

Guest Speaker: Rod Greene; The guest speaker was introduced by Peter Miskelly;

Rod explained that he does live in Wanneroo but he grew up in Midland and played football

for Midland against Wanneroo. Rod Green has been running his business here in Wanneroo

for the past 25 years. He did run the roadhouse in Eneabba for a time before setting up his

business Green's Tyres. He has been recognised as being the longest serving sponsor of the

Wanneroo Football Club and was presented with a plaque. In the past his business was

known as a Goodyear Tyre business before trading as Greens Tyres and leant on Goodyear

as our favoured brand but now we are selling Michellin and BF Goodrich under the Tyres Plus

brand but we are using the trading name as Greens Tyre and Brake. Rod acknowledged the

good work that Rotary Wanneroo has done over the years doing work for the community and

how hard it is to get volunteers to help out. Rod explained all of the different organizations he

has belonged to over the years especially starting the Chaplaincy program. He is involved in

the Wanneroo Business Association. He mentioned how hard it was to rebuild the Wanneroo

Cricket and Football Club rooms that were destroyed in an arson attack. They were able to

increase the size of the old club rooms by 30%. Rod is a definite white and black man being

with Swan Districts. With 12 grandkids they have been trained well in who to support. Rod

does count himself as being a Roo Boy. Rod said he is very happy to be involved in this area

and his business is going well. Being he is in his mid sixty's he is spending a bit more time

traveling and takes 2 days a week off. He has been fortunate over the years to have travelled

the world with his suppliers but recently he has been able to travel around our own wonderful

country.

Vote of Thanks: Neil Cook; Neil thanked Rod for his talk and presented him with our en-

graved glass. Neil also presented Rod with our Pride of Workmanship plaque. Neil also pre-

sented Paul Conti with a Pride of Workmanship plaque for the vocational evening at his

Winery.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF WANNEROO FOUNDATION

WHY WE CREATED IT

Our Club was established in 1971 and is the oldest Rotary Club within the City of Wanneroo. Since our charter, in 1971, the population of the city had grown from 4,000 residents to 167,000 in 1989. This massive growth in population had brought with it an increased need for assistance from associations and individuals with worth-while projects.

With the knowledge of the great success of the International Foundation within Rotary we established our own foundation to help provide support for some of these needs. In 1990 our records showed that we still had seven of the original founder members of our club, amassing between them more than 400 years of Rotary and Community Service. We hoped with this experience and through a joint effort with the citizens of Wanneroo and our club that we will be able to provide some of the funds required to support applications to our foundation

Why it was needed

Our children will be growing up in a world of high technology, robotics and computers, a world where a standard Secondary Education will no longer be sufficient, a world where Post Secondary qualifications will be essential. People with high qualifications will require assistance for research work and further education.

The Foundation

The creation of our Foundation was an exciting concept and new to Rotary in Western Australia. The objects of the Foundation allow the trustees to allocate funds to a wide range of projects i.e., provide gifts, loans, donations and property benefits to citizens or associations. Assist with the provision of public education in the state of Western Australia by providing scholarships and grants to promote education and research and encourage as well as providing opportunities to local students to pursue higher education.

The Trustees

Within the Foundation is a Trust which meets the requirements of the special provisions of the Income Tax Assessment Act and gifts made to the Trust (Above two dollars) will be an allowable tax deduction.

The trustees appointed to allocate funds are all current active Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Wan-neroo. The fund must be "public" in the sense that the control of the fund is vested in at least five trustees who, because of their position in the community, have a degree of responsibility to the community as a whole.

Post Secondary Scholarships

Twelve scholarships have been presented to High School students from the Wanneroo area, who have gained acceptance to a University Degree course. These scholarships were gratefully accepted and most of the students have communicated to us their progress through their courses.

Post secondary scholarships ($1,000-00) for 1996 were granted to Jose Acacio - Craigie High School accepted at U.W.A. studying Engineering and Commerce. Emma Argiro - Greenwood Senior High School accepted at U.W.A. studying Medicine. David Creer - St. Stevens is studying Engineering and Commerce.

Foundation Launch

Sir Francis Burt AC, KCMG, QC, Governor of Western Australia, officially launched the Foundation on Wednes-day, 21 March 1990.

Sir Francis said the Club was embarking upon an enterprise of great importance:

“It may be that your Club, by setting up the Foundation has hit upon a truth, which will spread, and answers evolve. I commend you for your vision.”
