Dean’s Dash Dr. Ross Dickens, Dean College of Business and Global Affairs Sometimes, bragging is fun . . . especially when it is so easy to do about the incredible people within CBGA. As I write this note, 12 students and Dr. Dexter Davis are in Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII (p. 5). The pages also show our students’ successes through clubs (p. 2), the Dunagan Chair of Excellence in Banking (p. 3), and involvement in educational and job-search activities (pp. 3–4). We also have awards and recognitions (pp. 2–4) and classroom activities that spill out into the lobby (p. 4). CBGA alumni are involved with honoring faculty (p. 9) and earning professional recognition (pp. 5–7). Faculty continue to undertake scholarship activities (pp. 7–8) and reach into the surrounding community to share their expertise (p. 5 and p. 8). In fact, this newsletter issue is already very full, but we decided to to brag on our #34 national ranking by U.S. News & World Report for the online MBA program (p. 4). We welcome your alumni news and are proud to pass it along! We also ask your help to recommend prospective students and let us know about possible internship and job prospects for current students. Finally, we thank you for your financial support. [See the new furniture in our student study area (p. 9) that gifts from supports like you helped to make possible.] I promise we have more ideas for possible uses of gifts both large and small and thank you in advance for your continued support of this brag- worthy school. McCartney Passes CPA Exam

Emily McCartney (l), former accounting major in CBGA, recently passed the CPA exam to become a licensed CPA. McCartney currently works as a senior auditor in the financial audit department for HCA Internal Audit.

Stevenson, CBGA Alum Interview Ryan Stevenson (r), a recent UTM graduate and CBGA finance major, is originally from Milan, TN, and chose to attend UTM because it was close to home and he knew many alumni who have received a quality education from the institution. Stevenson explains that the learning atmosphere and the comfort level he felt making connections with professors at UTM attracted him to the University. Stevenson became a finance major because, after trying a few different majors, finance was the most enjoyable to study, and the professors in

the CBGA are always willing to ensure their students are receiving a quality education. “Since I started my own company . . . , one of my greatest takeaways from the CBGA was the importance of learning about all the different aspects that go into running a business—not just one specific area . . . . The CBGA taught me an array of useful skills such as how to dissect a balance sheet, manage a team of people, market a business, analyze the current economic environment to plan for the future, and professional communication skills,” says Stevenson.

The UTM alum currently works at two job: His main career is with Silver Oak Securities, Inc. (SOS, Inc.) as a Cybersecurity Compliance Officer and Investment Advisor Representative. He started working at SOS, Inc. as an intern during his senior year at UTM and the company extended a full-time employment offer to Stevenson after graduation. He highly recommends anyone needing/wanting an internship in the financial services industry to apply with this company. Stevenson also recently started an Internet-based business called Hemp Haven that specializes in retail sales of Hemp and CBD products strictly online. The company Website is www.hemphavenshop.com Stevenson’s advice to someone who is considering earning a business degree is to try a lot of different areas and determine “what works for you. Take a class or two in each area you think you might enjoy and go with the one that you enjoy the most.” Do not settle for majoring in an area for which you have no passion. Work hard so you have a start on a productive career. “You can choose to be one of those students who just goes in the building, sits in the class, barely passes tests, and just receives a piece of paper at the end, OR, you can find a topic that you are truly passionate about” and grow with it. Your professors will do everything in their power to foster your growth,” just reach out and grab your opportunities.
