Friday 19 June 2020 As we come to the end of what has been a challenging Summer Term and to the end of the 2019/20 academic year, we would like to thank you all for the wonderful photographs and videos of our pupils 'KGS@Home' remote learning, some of which will feature in our next issue of 'The Kirkhamian'. Everyone within the whole school family has very much enjoyed seeing the pupils achievements and smiley faces across our social media platforms. Never has technology been as vital as the last few months and this important connection between home and school has certainly demonstrated how amazing and very special the KGS family is. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you back to school in August. Our pupils fully embraced last week's second challenge to create something in the kitchen using only five ingredients. We had a record number of entries, with the Kirkham Challenge inbox soon full and us having to increase the capacity to allow for the pupils' submissions. Yet again it proved extremely difficult to pick our winners. The winners are as follows;- Eleanor Smith (KGS Lockdown 2020 Cake), Jack McKenzie (Chicken & mushroom dish), Henry Bolton-Peall (Fruit crumble), Zoë Armstrong (Hummus), Grace Tomlinson (Donut cake), April Wright (Macarons), Alyssa Davies (Chocolate chip cookies), Harry Thompson (Blueberry muffins), Siôned Jones-Blanco (Revuelto de verduras con queso Feta), Will Prior (Meringues, strawberries and cream), Keira Tomes (Healthy flapjacks), Finlay McLachlan (Omelette), Glenn Packer (Scones). On Wednesday, our pupils yet again rose to this week's third and final house challenge, to film their own short performance. Yet again it proved extremely difficult to pick our winners. The winners are as follows;- Reuben Bond, Olivia Noblett, Charlie Asquith, Isabella Durston, Olivia Coupe, Lewis Simpson, Finley Clough, Dan Scott, Natalie Smith, Charlotte Fisher and Abigail Southern. Congratulations to all of our winners and to everyone who participated in the challenges over the last three weeks. Thank you and well done to everyone who entered Mr Berry's Scrabble House Challenge as part of last week's assembly. The challenge was to create as many 'KGS' themed words as possible using a scrabble board. The winner, with a fantastic 247 points, was Maddie Chaya and family. Well done! Following the cancellation of this Summer's Hockey Camp due to the current situation, we would like to thank England and Great Britain International Hockey player, Susannah Townsend, for agreeing to take part in a Q&A session with some of the girls who were due to attend the camp in August. Harlequins and England Rugby Union World Cup Finalist, Fiona Pocock, also offered some advice and a few tips for the girls with regards to strength and conditioning. Both of these video clips can be viewed on our school website at https://www.kirkhamgrammar.co.uk/news. On Tuesday, the winner of our September 2020 First Years 'Street Sign Challenge' was decided using a random number generator. Thank you to everyone who participated and congratulations to our winner, Lucy! Fellow September 2020 First Year pupil, Jess, has been incredibly busy with our Engineering Challenges. She has upcycled a water bottle into a tissue holder, turned ten toilet rolls into a number sorting game, built a spaghetti tower and created some 3D lettering. Amazing, well done Jess!

Lower Sixth pupil, Olivia Bickerstaff (pictured left), has been making a hen hutch from scratch over the last few weekends for her new Wilkie chickens. It looks amazing...well done, Olivia! J4 pupil, Harvey (pictured right), has used his spare time during lockdown to upcycle a broken bed frame into a garden bench. Well done, Harvey!

This week in Science, our I2 pupils have been learning about caring for our planet, in particular the oceans. Their task was to create a poster using their own ideas learnt from the lesson. What fantastic work from our pupils. Well done to you all!

In Art, our J4 pupils have been looking at 'Pop Art' and the artist, Andy Warhol. The pupils had a go at creating their own 'Pop Art' pieces. Stunning artwork, J4!
