of moves, it likewiseobstacles as superstition quent fears. The psychological process ofimagination is a complex one. In brief,we may say, it consists of establishingmental realities which have not as yet been experienced, that is, objectively perceived.

I can imagine myself walking insideone of the precipitous craters of themoon. The surface is hard, unlike thevolcanic ash of some of the extinctcraters on earth. As I walk, I look upward. There above me I see the earthfrom which I came. It is luminous andrelatively larger than the moon appearsto be when I was on earth. Notwithstanding my special protective covering, I feel the intense cold creeping inupon me in the shadows of the crater’screvices. I could continue my imaginary reactions to my adventure to a

 point of great realism. So vivid wouldthey become, if I would detach mymind from my external surroundings,that I would have all the emotional responses, the feelings of excitement, sur

 prise, and suspense of an actual objective experience.

Such imaginary realities are com pounded out of actual sensations andideas; otherwise they would not be possible of realization. Imagination works

with simple ideas and their compounds.It; merely arranges them into an orderwhich the mind has not actually perceived through any of its senses. I

could not imagine myself on the moonunless I first possessed certain elementsof knowledge. If I did not know ofcraters, of volcanoes, of planets, of intense heat and cold, and of differentkinds of terrain, I would have nothingout of which to build my imaginarytrip to the moon. Perhaps, if every ideacould be traced backward by direct connection through sensation to the senseimpulses that caused it, or to latent subliminal feelings that arise within us,imagination would not be so free. Mostempirical ideas (the ones arising from

our objective sense faculties) are immediately referred to their external causes.When I see a color, I immediately associate it with some object with whichit seems identified. I do not need toreason, “Where are the red or bluecolors coming from?” Likewise, we areimmediately able to orient almost allsounds and taste sensations which wehave; that is, we are able to refer themto some source outside ourselves.

But suppose I am in a depressedmood, and I am not immediately ableto relate that feeling to any contribut

ing factor, such as an event. I beginto grope for an explanation. I bringmy imagination into play. I recall,from memory, experiences which engendered such emotions in the past. Ireason inductively as to what generalcircumstance or condition may be thecause of my present feeling of depression. Whatever seems the most plausi

 ble becomes the grounds for the imaginary cause of my feeling of depression.

Such a mental process is the stuff outof which superstitions are created—yetthere was at first the actual  factor involved, namely, the emotional depression which I felt.

Consequently, behind eveiy fantasy,every legend and superstition there lieone or more ideas born out of actual experience. As we examine classicallegends and myths, we find that theyinclude such conceptions as bilocation,that is, the projection of the personalityat a distance from the body, so that itis visible to another. We find, too, accounts of the visual perception of hap

 penings which have actually occurred,and at a great distance from theobserver. We are told of coincidentalideas or communications had by persons when there was no physical bond

 between them for the communicationof such thoughts. Of course, such accounts have been acclaimed to be purely fantastic—highly imaginary.  Manyof such accounts are bom out of hearsay and are not evidential. From thestrictly scientific point of view, there isno means to prove tha t such experienceswere had or that processes were known

 by which they may be made to occuragain. The fact remains, however, thataccounts relating experiences of mentaltelepathy, thought transference, andmind reading have  persisted.  To any

intelligent person, this persistenceshould be sufficient to establish the

 probability, at least, that there are certain causes, external or internal, whichhave given rise to the idea of mentaltelepathy, no matter how much imagination may have subsequently distortedthem. To dismiss the phenomenon bysaying that it is imaginary, is not sufficient. Imagination employs ideas, aswe have shown. How do such ideasarise—what is their connection withactual objective experience?

Ms T h o u g h t  

 «S u b s t a n c e ?  

The commonly accepted definition ofmental telepathy is the communicationof intelligence, or an idea, from onemind to another without any physicalmeans. Ear ly critics have attacked the belief in the phenomenon on the groundthat there was no medium, or connection, between the minds. By whatmeans, or agency, it has been asked,was the thought to be transferred?

Such a criticism is illiberal. It consists of assigning to thought a substance,making of it an actual thing ratherthan something capable of producingeffects. In writing this article, in usingthe material properties of paper and

ink, I am not conveying by means ofthem, a thought. W hat actually isthought in my mind has not created anarchetype of itself upon this paper.When you read what I have written,you have not received, through the medium of the paper and the printing,anything which is an actual counter

 part of my thought. I have convertedthought ideas into muscular responses,which, in turn, have created symbols

 —letters and words—upon the page.You, then, visually perceive these sym

 bols and, by a reverse process, the sen

sations you have of them are translatedinto ideas, thoughts within your mind.I can only hope that what arises in yourmind as thought, finds some relevancyto what exists in my mind and thatwe will understand each other. Thefact remains that when I write or speakto you, I am not ever directly conveying my thought to you. I am but creating a condition which may, through theorgans of sight and hearing, producesimilar thoughts within you.  Mythoughts are thus always my own; yourthoughts are always your own. We

each establish certain conditions outside ourselves by which mutual cognition is had. I come to know tha t certainthings which you experience will meanthe same to me. Those persons who inthe past, therefore, ridiculed the possibility of mental telepathy, becausethere was no physical intermediary tocarry the idea, have failed to realizethat the idea, as such, need not betransmitted from one mind to anotherfor the phenomenon to exist. Accordingly, we will not proceed in our consideration of the subject with any ideaof thoughts floating through space, or

 passing through it as exact archetypesof the sender’s ideas.

What is the probability of extrasensory powers, that is, that the humandoes possess faculties for receiving im pulses wdiich go beyond the range ofhis objective receptor faculties? Hyperesthesia (supersensitivity) is well knownin the circles of academic psychology.An example is hyperacuteness of the

hearing (auditory hyperesthesia). Such persons physically hear slight noises as being unusually loud. Th eir specialauditory power may cause them considerable irritation because normalnoises may distract them as much asloud ones would an average person.One such individual under examinationwas found to hear four times as loudas an average person. He could hearwhispers across a room, which other

 persons, standing in the center, couldnot hear. The theory explaining this

 phenomenon is that of a fixation ofsynaptic connections of the auditory

 pathways. Simply put, it means thatthe connections between nerves of theauditory sense did not properly adjustthemselves and therefore caused a distortion, or exceptional intensity of thesound impulses traveling along their

 paths. Fu rthe r experimentation hasshown that it is possible to hear speechthrough the skin. Amplified sound vi brations can be felt by the fingers;words and phrases are different enoughto be distinguished, after some practice.Attune your radio to a speaker’s voice.Then carefully muffle your ears so that

ou cannot hear. If you will practiceolding your finger tips lightly against

the cone of the radio, you will eventually be able to distinguish certain wordsthrough touch.  The difference betweencycles as close as 200-225 has often

 been heard   through the skin after practice. Hyperesthesia is, therefore, acknowledged and proven. It is acknowledged that some people can perceiveimpulses and have sensations and realizations of externality in ways that arenot average or ordinary. This, obviously, does not prove that telepathy isan example of hyperesthesia, but it

 justifies an investigation as to its possi bilities. It becomes mandatory that it be subject to an unbiased investigation.

A r g u m e n t s A g a i n s t T e l ep a t h y  

What is the attitude of modem psychology toward mental telepathy orthought transference? There is a difference of opinion. The largest groupare of the opinion that there is no factual foundation for it and that thosewho claim it are deceiving themselves.The next largest group ignore the sub

 ject ent irely, expressing no opinion—orone of indifference. The third group,

the minority, are conducting reserved  research  into the phenomena under theclassification of  parapsychology, theirobject being to determine whether aman possesses any extrasensory powers by which telepathy could be accom plished.

It is interesting to consider some ofthe arguments the first group presentsas against what are claimed to be tele

 pathic demonstrations. It is held thatsuch phenomenon is the result of asubliminal perception. This means aninvoluntary  perception and response.This involuntary response occurs tocertain muscular cues which theper-cipient receives from the sender. Thus,it is explained a person’s hand has certain muscular response to his thoughts.If, perchance, his hands touched yours,you would, through subliminal perception (inner perception) feel thosechanges in his hand without objectivelyrealizing them. You would, therefore,take your cue from them and interpretthem in a manner corresponding to theother individual’s ideas. You wouldsubsequently believe that you had received the thoughts by means of tele

 pathy. No one will dispute the factthat our thoughts do cause minute  in voluntary muscular responses of whichwe are not aware. However, we knowthat many persons consciously and unconsciously have seemed to transmit

their thoughts to others and yet theirhands and their feet were not   touchingthe other person. Consequently, the results could not be attributed to muscular response. Such an explanation fails because of its lack of logic.

Coincidence of thought or the arrivalat the same ideas simultaneously—afairly common experience between two

 people—is held not to be the result ofmental telepathy. It is suggested tha twhen two persons select each other ascompanions it is because they have

 parallel  interests; therefore, according

to the law of probability, there mustcome a time when such persons, whentogether, will inevitably express simultaneously the same ideas. The fact remains, however, that persons, eventhough they are companions, will havecoincidental ideas that may be quitecontra ry to their mutual interests. Ifthe coincidental ideas only followed the

e   n o w   know that Egypthad solar Temples as wellas star Temples, and thereason for this is very-understandable when werealize that the summersolstice marked the mostimportant day in the yearfor all the people in the 

 Nile. I t is not likely theyunderstood that as the earth traveled inits orbit around the sun the summersolstice was the period when the sun

was farthest north and sent its raysmore directly toward the earth than atany other time of the year. W hat theEgyptians did know was that the starSirius  rose at about the same time thesun appeared to stand still, which wasat the occurrence of the solstice. Theirsolar year commenced with the summersolstice which not only was but is coincident with the arrival of the Nileflood at Cairo, Heliopolis, and Memphis,the latter having been the most important center in Northern Egyptian lifein early days. According to our calen

dar, this occurs about the 20th of June.It is interesting to note that the pyramids were used for finding the date ofthe equinoxes, for on these occasions,the sun would rise and set in line withthe north and south base. The wintersolstice was calculated when the noonday shadow was the longest.

The summer solstice or midsummerday was of tremendous importance because this was the annual time for the

 Nile to overflow—the very river by theaction of which they lived and drewthe ir sustenance. Before the overflow ofthe Nile, preparation had to be madefor distribution of its irrigating water.Spring crops had to be protected, andriver dwellers had to move to higherground, for the actual safety of theirlives depended upon this. When thesun reached the most northerly point inits orbit, the river was about to overflow. The sun in this position in Juneand December (the latter occurrence

 being the winter solstice) appears tostand still for two or three days. Theoccasion of solstice, which is literally“the standing of the sun,” resembles inits movement a giant pendulum pausing for an instant at the end of itsswing.

As the Nile receded from the highlands, seeds for the crops were plantedand agriculture flourished. The cropswere ready to be harvested at the timeof the spring equinox in April.

That the Egyptians might know ex

actly when to expect midsummer’s day,and the flooding of the Nile, stakes wereset in the ground—one for observational purposes and one for alignment. Eachday at sunset, the alignment stake wasmoved farther north, until for aboutthree days there was no noticeable difference. Then at last the sun set to thesouth of the stake and the work wasdone. This was the day of the summersolstice. On the last line of observation,

the Great Temple of Kamak had been built and at midsummer the light of thesetting sun would fall through a row ofcolumns into the hypostyle hall of theTemple; in time the light would fallupon the stone face of a statue in a

niche in the southeastern wall and thismarked the arrival of the greatest dayof the year.

In early Egyptian history the lionwas the god of the summer solstice.Egyptians also knew well the constellation of Leo the Lion; it was said thatin the hottest summer his earthly counterpart left the desert and came downto the Nile for water. This was whenthe Nile was rising, and as a result thelion was deified. It was in the year of4500 B. C. that the summer solstice

 passed from Virgo to Leo and the repre

sentation in stone, of the two signs together, forms the most fabulous monster of all time—the sphinx. With the body of a lion and the head of a human,the sphinx has been designated as theriddle of the universe. The sphinx,while facing the rising sun in the East,was dedicated to a local sun-god, butthe enigma and the smile of the sphinxare universal. Budge says tha t thesphinx is the symbol of “Horus on theHorizon.”

That they might know the amount ofrise and fall of the Nile, the Egyptianshad a water-level gage which we todaycall the 'Nilometer.  The gage was scaledoff with horizontal markings in groups of five and in sections one cubit high.(A cubit equals about one-half meter.)The Nilometer has been in use sincethe Fifth Dynasty. Myths concerningthe rising of Sirius at the time of theyearly inundation are just so much evidence of the large share the river hadin Egyptian life.

An interesting instrument used bythe Egyptians in erecting their Templesand pyramids, was a combination

 plumb line and level called a merkhet. 

This consisted of a narrow, ebony-wood block, about one foot long with a vertical block several inches high erected atone end from which hung a weighted

 J'he  plumb line. When the plumb line was Rosicrucian  perpendicular the ebony block was hori-n . zontal and served as a level. Professor 

 Lftgest  j pj Breasted tells of finding such a June merkhet   among the effects of King1946   Tutenkhamon.

H e l i o p o l i s  , t h e C en t e r   o f E d u c a t i o n  

Among well-known Temples orientedto the sun are several to he found atKamak, one of these being that ofAmen-Ra. We find solar Temples at

Memphis, Abydos, Sais, Medinet-Habu,and the East and West Temples atGizeh. The huge colossi on the plainat Thebes seem to eagerly watch therising sun. Heliopolis is one of theoldest Temples in Egypt and was definitely oriented to the rising and settingsun as far back as 4000 B.C. The ancientcity of Heliopolis was called the Cityof the Sun. It contained sun Templeseach of which was accompanied by alibrary with professional scribes and alist of so-called books inscribed on thewalls. It had observatories, obelisks,

and sundials. All the various cults ofthe sun flourished there until 1360 B.C.,when there arose in Heliopolis the firstgreat monotheistic religion the worldhad ever known.

Before the young Pharaoh Amenho-tep IV succeeded to the throne, he wentto the City of the Sun for his education,which was the center of education attha t time. Far ahead of his time,Amenhotep possessed abstract powersof reasoning and, instead of worship ping one or more gods in differentways, he envisioned the sun as a sym bol of a single all-powerful being, thesource of life and light. As Pharaoh hetried to be tolerant and advocated monotheism for his people. He ordered starworship discontinued and dismissed thestar priests. He wanted the new religion to be based on kindness and

 beauty and he tried desperately to bringthis about. A new City of the Sun was built at Tell el-Amama. The Templeand sculpture work was constructed bythe finest skilled craftsmen.

The Temple of Amenhotep was oriented 13° north of west and was soconstructed that at the sunset of the

first day of spring, which was on April18 by the Gregorian Calendar, the longrays of the setting sun would penetrateto the innermost recesses of his splendid Temple. On the walls of this superbstructure were carved his own hymnsdescribing the smi as symbolizing theone God, the universal Creator of life.To Amenhotep, the sun was the fatherof foreigners as well as Egyptians.

Egypt was not ready for monotheism,and after Amenhotep’s transition hiscity was abandoned and his people returned to their old religion as the priesthood regained their influence. Egyptthen began to decline. It is only after

3000 years that we find reverence being paid to the young king and hiswonderful ideal, which dazzled Egyptfor an all too brief but brilliant moment.

T h e T e m p l e o f M i a t h o r  

The impressiveness of the monumental stately Temples of Egypt is perhapsrevealed to best advantage at the Den-dera Temple of Hathor. In travelingup the Nile River and before reachingThebes, one comes upon this granaTemple, facing more to the north than

northeast. The axis of the Temple isdirected to a position which in earlytimes was hela by the star  Dubhe,  inthe constellation of Ursa Major, andwas called the Ox Thigh by Egyptians.It is now familiar to us as the BigDipper.

Said to have been built in 4800 B.C.,the Dendera, or Hathor Temple, wasrestored by Pepi I of the Vlth Dynasty,and again by Thutmose III of theXVIIIth Dynasty. Architecturally, Dendera is one of the most beautiful structures in Egypt, and perhaps it is worth

noting that the Temples which we seetoday are but restored shrines.

The last restoration of Dendera wascommenced by Ptolemy XI in 700, atthe time of the victorious march of theTheban priests northward from exileat Gebel. The Temple was completed

 by Mark Antony and Cleopatra jus t before the time of Jesus the Christ.

There is no massive pylon in front ofthis Temple, and this clearly indicatesthat there was to be no obstruction ofthe light of the star  Dubke entering thecolonnaded halls of Dendera. Like the

Temple of Kamak, Dendera standswithin a spacious 1000-foot square enclosure of sun-dried brick.

As one approaches the DenderaTemple of Hathor from the north, onesees over the entrance portals a massive, overhanging entablature bearing awinged disk as the chief decoration.

The front of the Temple is composedof six huge pillars 11 feet in diameter 

and 50 feet high, each surmounted witha four-sided capital, bearing the representation of the head of Hathor, thusidentifying the fact that the Templewas dedicated to the “Lady of the Pillars,” in earlier times known as the cow 

goddess.  The figure is seen as awoman’s face with cow ears and horns.In their mythology, the Egyptians associated Hathor with the goddess  Nut, the all-embracing sky. Passing betweenthe center Hathor pillars, one entersthe portico or lofty hall of twenty-fourgreat columns, the base of each beinggranite and the upper portion sandstone. Like the majority of EgyptianTemples the hypostyle hall is surrounded by an ambulatory, chapels,and a number of small halls and subsidiary chambers. The straight passage

leads from the entrance portal to theinnermost sanctuary or naos at the extreme end of the Temple which was incomplete darkness. There reposing ina niche was the ever-present image ofa goddess. The king was accustomedto approach the court in ceremonial

 procession, thence to the sanctuarywhich was accessible to him and to the priests alone. The walls of the roomsare covered with bas-relief of once brilliant color. Other inscriptions on thewall depict the religious ceremonieswhich occurred in the Temple under

 pious priests. Such inscriptions include“the Ritual of Dendera,” involving thewhole service as performed in the TwoLands of Egypt. The mysterious ritualhad to do with Osiris rising from thedead and being protected by Isis whowas his legendary wife. When it was

 built, Dendera was another Temple ofIsis. Pluta rch said tha t Isis and Hathorwere the same goddess. According toDiodorus, the mysteries of both werealike in every detail except for name.

A goddess cult was concerned withthe mystery of the birth of life and the

coming forth from life. The cult of aod had to do with the mystery ofeatli, and of life coming from death.

The sculptured chambers have colorful names, one of which is the “SilverRoom” where the silver was stored.Also, this room was a chamber wherethe priests prepared incense and perfumes.

h r i s t i a n i t y   professestha t i t s p recep ts andteachings, which it contends were revealed to itsdisciples, are of Divineorigin. Consequently, allmen are urged to em brace and accep t theseteachings. However, these

exhortations of Christianity are todayoften measured by their pragmatic value.Do they, in other words, actually servethe business of living, of meeting theneeds and requirements of our presentexistence?

Simply put, how  practical  is Christianity in the life of the average manand woman? At first this question mayseem offensive to the religionist, butupon further inquiry and thought, theaverage intelligent person will realizetha t the practicability of Christianity isa logical question and one that should

 be met and satisfactorily answered.Christianity does not claim tha t mor

tal existence, or existence here and now,was especially designed as a cruciblethrough which man has to pass andthrough which he has to be tried. Fu rther, the Christian doctrines do not ex pound that man must  experience excruciating torment here in Life and be sub

 ject to numerous trials and tests, andthat he cannot hope to experience onearth a lasting peace of mind or ecstasy.There is nothing in Christian exegesisor Biblical interpretation which statesthat the earth was fashioned as a hell.

In fact, in Psalms 33:5, we find the following: “ . . . the earth is full of thegoodness of the Lord.” Then, again,we have that famous saying of Johnin John 3:16: “For God so loved theworld, that He gave his only begottenSon, . . In all of this, then , the worldwould appear to be not necessarily ahell in which man must endure painand suffering. We might conclude tha tour mortal existence is an interlude between or the purpose of Christianity'would be merely to offer rewards for adherence to it, in the hereafter, or in a lifeto come. Such a system, if it be true,resolves down to the fact that scienceand philosophy would be the only avenues left to man by which he could

 bette r himself and find some happinessduring his mortal existence.

The cycle of man, to be complete inany religion or any system of philosophydealing with the nature of man, must

 pass through three phases. This cycle ofman, in other words, must first have a

oint of origin, some explanation as toow and why man originated. The sec

ond phase must account for his consciousand mortal existence, why he is here,and the third phase deals with the termination of the cycle and its completion—a retu rn to its point of origin, or a rounding out of the cycle. All three phasesare interdependent. Each one must berelated to the other. They obviouslycannot be separate, for one merges intothe other to complete the cycle. Eachof the three phases must have its own

compensations, its own rewards, andthey should manifest and be apparentduring their respective phase of thecycle. If Christianity provides these rewards and compensations in its doctrines for each of these phases of thecycle of man, then Christianity is practical.

If, on the other hand, there is a hiatus; if one of the phases constitutes agap insofar as providing rewards, com

 pensations, or an adequate way where by a human may adjust himself to thecycle through which it passes, thenChrist ianity is abstract; it is incomplete;it is purely idealistic.

Ch r i s t i a n Co s m o l o g y  

We will now look at these three

 phases of the cycle of man from theChristian point of view. The first ofthese three phases we shall call Christian cosmology.  This cosmology concerns the Christian conception of the

 beginning of the universe and of allreality, including man himself. Theearliest Christian cosmology was inherited from the Jews. It is a direct presentation of the Jewish ideas of the constitution and creation of the world. Weare told that in the beginning was Godor Yahweh, and that Yahweh, or God,measured the waters in the hollow of

his hand. Further, that God meted outthe span of the heavens. God also measured the mountains and the hills ingreat scales. It was also Yahweh whospread out the heavens as a tent to encompass all things beneath. And inGenesis we are told that God formed

 both the light and the darkness.Jesus expressed faith in these same

Hebraic ideas of creation. To him, Godwas the Lord of creation. He was acentral figure or power from which allthings came. Jesus said that God mak-eth the sun to rise on evil and on good.

Paul of Tarsus, the great apostle ofChristianity, proclaimed that there isone God, of whom all things are a partor from whom all things come, againrecognizing a single cause in the universe, a mind cause or personalized God.Then Saint John relates: “In the beginning was the logos, and the logos waswith God.” Meaning tha t in the beginning was the Word and the law of God.This subordinates the Word and law to

God and makes of it an instrument ormeans by which God was able to bringabout his creations, an intermediary between manifestation and God himself.All things, however, according to SaintJohn, were made as the result of God,using the logos.

We m ust not pass by this point without making plain that the conceptionof the logos, as used in Christianity, is

 purely syncretic. It was borrowed fromthe ancient Memphite doctrines, namely, from the teachings of the MemphiteSchool of Mysteries in ancient Egypt,thousands of years before Christianity.In particular, nearly 3000 B.C., Ptahwas held by the priesthood, in thisMystery School of Memphis, to be theoldest being in the universe. In the ad

vanced theology of the Memphite Mystery School, Ptah was declared to be amind, rather than a form or substance.As an eternal mind he pervaded theentire universe and was in effect thearchitect   of the universe. He was thefirst being and the oldest of all things

 because he was self-created. Of particular importance to us here is the factthat it was proclaimed by these ancient

 priests that the thoughts of Ptah weretranslated into words, that each conception or thought of this eternal mindhad a corresponding intonation, a word. 

The word went forth and the word itself became the efficacy, the power ofGod, which became objectified into therealities of the world, became the moving cause accounting for all things. Itwas said that as Ptah thinks in his heart(it was believed then tha t the heart wasthe seat of the mind) that his tonguecommands, and that for each thoughtthere immediately arose a word, which

 became the vibran t force by which thethought gathered into itself the meansof becoming the thing. Ptah , therefore, by means of his word created as he

wished. This idea of the created wordof God passed from Memphis, Egypt, tothe Hebrews, and thence to the ancientGreeks who assigned to the doctrine thename,  Legos, which finally found itselfestablished in Christian theology.

T h e N eg a t i v e I n f l u e n c e  

Christian cosmology, however, takesa little different turn in the furtherwritings of Paul. Though he looks up

on God as the principal creator of allthings, he does not overlook that thereare other forces somewhat independentof God, which account for things in lifeand in existence, and so we can holdthat Paul also expounded a dualistic

cosmology. There was God and thenthere was, as Paul calls him, the lawless  one as well; this lawless one beingSatan. Paul says that the whole of creation, at times, groaneth as in travail,as in pain, the result of the acts of thislawless one. Thus Paul conceived a conflict, a virtual wrestling  between theDivine and evil forces for supremacyand domination of the things of existence. This conflict influences the formsand expressions of the things in theworld, which, according to Paul, mighthave been different if the lawless one,

or the malevolent forces, did not exist.This conception of the conflict betweengood and evil, or between the Divineand malevolent powers is also syncretic, for Christianity borrowed it fromthe much earlier Zoroastrian doctrines.Zoroaster had affirmed that Ahura-Mazda, the God of Light and Goodness,was in conflict with the God Ahriman,the God of darkness and of evil, eachseeking supremacy in the world andthat man was the victim of this contestof power.

The gnostics were a group in the

early period of Christianity, who soughtGod exclusively through knowledge. Itwas their contention that man could be brought closer to God through knowingand understanding His works and Hismanifestations, not merely by a blindor prejudiced faith. These gnostics be

came the first Christian theologians.They were the first ones who soughtto organize and establish certain doctrines which would constitute a systemof knowledge, a philosophy of Christianity, if you wish. They, too, had a

Christian cosmology. In their cosmology, they sought to apologize  for theevil, material world. To them, the material world was the result of the blind,

gerverse nature of a demiurge or Satan,y this theory, they sought to account

for the obvious sin and evil which ap pears in the world. How and wheredid this sin originate? It must originateout of the world was their reasoning.Consequently, they wanted to separatethe world and all material things fromthose creations by the Supreme Being.From their further reasoning, God

could not have designed and createdthe world from material things, or elsehow could you explain the evil whichthey thought to be inherent within it?So they apologized for the materialworld and its evil nature, by accrediting its creation to a demiurge. Christianity and many other religions, haveassociated sin with the flesh and withthe body, because the desires and theappetites lead men to acts which areheld to be the reverse of the urges ofthe moral self. So the somatic or physical self was thought to be created bythe demiurge. Therefore, in many ofthese religions, including Christianity,man is obliged to find salvation in afreedom of the soul from the body, thelatter being declared or recognized ascorrupt.

 path of their common interest, then wecould lay the  phenomenon to the cause of probability. Since, at times, they do

not, there must be another reason forthe coincident ideas. The fact tha t persons having certain common interestsdo  more frequently have coincidentideas, goes further to support the theoryof telepathy than to disprove it.

Another argument advanced to com bat telepathy is that there are manynegative  results when positive resultsshould occur. It is related that innu merable instances occur when it would be to the advantage of the individual to perceive the thoughts of another andwhen the sender is equally anxious for

his thoughts to reach out, and yet, ap parently there is  no telepathic communication. However, again, such anargum ent is logically unsound. Afterall, if mental telepathy is possible, certain ideal or  preferred  conditions wouldneed prevail if it is to occur. Such adependency upon conditions is logicalto expect. For analogy, most assuredlythere are more persons who do not  heara radio program than those who do.Th at does not prove, however, that thosewho report that they receive the program are charlatans or suffering from

illusions.Still another negative argument used

to explain away the phenomenon ofmental telepathy, or telesthesia, is theone of human coefficients.  These coefficients consist of a parallelism of common factors of knowledge. All normal persons perceive certain things nearlyalike, and they acquire alike elementaryknowledge. Thus, if you ask a personto draw simple symbols, most individuals will draw a circle, a triangle, across, a square, and the like. It is alsocontended that if they are asked to

name a playing card, these human coefficients will cause them nea rly always

 —in two or three tries—to name thesame card. We may call this preferential thinking.  In other words, we areall constituted so that we respond moreor less the same way to certain conditions. Our minds prefer to follow theseordinary patterns of thought. Thesimpler the thought, the more prosaic,the more common it is to most people,

which, according to this theory, heightens the probability that more peoplewill experience such thought simultaneously.

A Professor Coover, conducting ex periments in telesthesia , found that theaccuracy where the sender was not concentrating on a particular number wasin the same percentage as when he was.To further explain, where the sender,unknown to the percipient, concentrated on a blank paper, the latter received a number just about as frequently as when one appeared on the paper.Thus, it was claimed, the percipient resorted to the factor of coefficients. Hethought of the number more easily andit frequently came into his mind eventhough the sender was concentratingupon no num ber at all. Is it not pos

sible, we ask, that this is not   really dueto the human coefficient, but rather thatthe sender had transferred, or communicated to the percipient a numberfrom his subconscious mind, eventhough he was staring at a blank sheetof paper? All of these contentions todisprove mental telepathy, as we haveset forth here, have been ineffectual;they appear more as attempts to by pass the real issue. Such is not worthyof the scientific attitude of mind.

Discounting any supernatural agency, are there any theories having anatural and physical basis which may be used to explain how telepathy mayexist as a fact and not as an illusion?Generally, it has been conceded sincethe time of Aristotle that there are butfive receptor (objective) senses. Theso-called sixth sense  was held to be afantasy because it could not be clearlydefined, and further, because no physical organ could be associated with it.In 1886 a  physiologist  named Bell, whowith an associate discovered that motor

and sensory nerves were separate, declared that there was a “muscularsense.” This, he referred to as a sixthsense. He  pointed out that touch includes pressure sensation as well astemperature and pain. The muscularsense, as we now know, aids visual perception. The movement of the musclesof the eyes aids in causing perceptionof distance, size and form. Psychologycalls these modal senses.  They are as-

sociated with the other five, yet are notdistinctly of them.

Physiology, through its study of thenervous system, has gone still furtherin building a foundation on which canrest a rational theory of mentaltelepathy.

Let us digress for a moment to consider a rather popular theory of thinking.  Neural (nerve) impulses from thereceptors (sense organs) reach somearea of the cortex (outer layer of the

 brain) . Instead of their passing immediately to some motor organs (causing bodily movement), these impulsesare shifted along association fibers toanother cortical area. Series of im

 pulses are set up that travel aroundwithin the cerebrum. In simple  thinking, the impulses provide immediateconnections between the afferent and

efferent (incoming and outgoing) pathways. This results in simple reflexes.If, for example, I feel heat in my fingertips, I look for the source of the heatand I withdraw my hand. The directing of my sight to the cause of the painand the movement of my hand constitute simple thinking.

In abstract, deep, or profoundthought, when we are reasoning intently about something, such a process isinfinitely more complicated. How thiscomplex thinking, this combination ofsensations and the changing of them

into involved ideas, is accomplished isstill a mystery, about which there ismuch speculation. “Complex brainmapping” is not yet possible, admitsone psychologist. We only know thatthe peripheral organs (those of sight,hearing, etc.) and their functions arerelated to certain areas of the brain.The body itself aids in thinking. Thesensations which we perceive from

 bodily changes, and the effects of environment upon them, give us muchmaterial out of which ideas are formed.

It has been said that “thinking is re

strained speaking—a thought is a wordor an act in a nascent state.” Thisdirectly implies that thought is energy.An energy which must dissipate itself

when the subject was merely asked toimagine  bending his arm. The instrument registered a slight energy in themuscles when the subject merely thought  of moving his arm.

In recent years the electro-encephalo-graph has registered rhythms, or waves,of electrical discharges from the brain.For the experiment, electrodes arefastened to the frontal area of the headand to the occipital region (base of theskull). The brain cells, neurons, areinfused with an energy which is definitely electrical. Thought varies theirrhythmic waves. It is noticeable thatthe frequency of the waves andtheir amplitude, or intensity, becomeschanged. The rhythm of the brainwaves is disturbed when the subject,

who is resting, is disturbed by soundsand lights, or when he becomes anxiousor worried. Of particu lar importance isthe fact that intense  thought, such asdoing a mathematical problem, causesa distinct change in the frequency andamplitude of the waves. Electro-ence

 phalograms (charts) show that there isa difference between waves during sleepand the waking state. A researcher inexperimental psychology has admittedwith reference to these subjects, that“Here is a key, fashioned by psychology out of radio.” We can interpret thisto be an admission that thought energymay have, or can generate, in someway, high frequency waves which can,under favorable conditions, be transmitted, or emitted from the body, similar to hertzian or radio waves beingemitted by a radio transm itter. Thisimplies as well that a cerebral sensitivity may be had whereby the thought  waves  could be received by anothermind. Such, of course, would not betransmitted ideas. They would, andcould, only be impulses of minute energy and of a high frequency. These, inturn, would excite or stimulate certain

extrasensory areas in the percipient’s brain. To use a radio term, we wouldsay that they would heterodyne on thecurrent of the neurons in that area ofthe brain. This disturbance or changeof neural energy within the bramwould cause sensations, just as impulsescoming through the objective receptorsenses do. Then, these sensations would

 be perceived as ideas, or thoughts.  How

would such ideas of minute energy betransmitted? In the same man ner thatother energies vibrate or are transmitted through so-called space, we wouldanswer. As yet, these higher frequencies of the brain are not known.

We can not investigate the manner,therefore, in which they are physicallyreceived. In fact, the known electricalenergy of the brain cells is of a com

 paratively low frequency.

The esoteric contention is that whenthe thought wave is liberated from themind, it is released into the Cosmic.The latter is an intermediary whichoffers the waves no resistance andconsequently they need no great im petus of energy in order to be transmitted. If a thought is thus transm itted, it may be asked, why do not many

other persons, instead of just the recipient, receive it? We venture thisexplanation: The ego, or self, of each

 person is distinctly different. The selfis an aggregate of certain subliminalsensations of the whole being—like acombination of musical notes, or a distinct blending of colors. We might saythat the self, to the individual, is theconscious rhythm of his being, thewhole harmony of his entity. Any im

 pingement, any slight disturbance of itis bound to cause a sensation which theindividual will inte rpret as certain ideas

or feelings related distinctly to himself.The self constitutes, we further add, theindividual’s realization of everythingconnected with his ego: his individuality, his hopes, ambitions, fears, name,and loves. A transmitted thought concerning a person will obviously embodysome relationship to the self of that person. Thus the radiated thought wavewould actuate more easily the mind ofthe one for whom it is intended andwith whom there is a relationship.

The difficulty in thought transference, in my opinion, is not the lack of 

the special sensitivity of the percipient, bu t ra ther the inability of the sendereasily to free the thought from his ownobjective consciousness. In most instances, it has been found that telepathyhas been more easily accomplished

when it had the impetus of some intense emotional stimuli behind it.Under the influence of fright and sur prise, or some tragic event, many persons have unconsciously transmittedthoughts at the time, which were received by persons having some relationship to them, or to the event. Itwould appear that to break throughthe confining influence of the objectiveconsciousness there must be a coordination  of a high emotional impetus andof the thought itself.

Psychology admits that telekinesis

has been accomplished with a high degree of success when the subject wasin a hypnotic state. This confirms thetheory that the objective or consciousstate of mind interferes with the transmission of thought, limiting it to the

 brain itself.

The Rosicrucians have long investigated the phenomenon of hyperesthesiaand the projection of thought. Theyhave developed a technique of by

 passing   the objective consciousness toaccomplish the transmission of thought.Even with this technique, it is not

easily accomplished by everyone. Theemotional impetus of sincerity, devotion, and proper purpose are necessary.Above all, the Rosicrucians recognizethe physical and the natural laws whichunderlie the modus operandi of the phenomenon. The Rosicrucians, togetherwith orthodox science, oppose anysupernatural element as being the causeof telesthesia. Man lives in a sea ofenergy; m an is of that sea. Why shouldhe doubt that he is played upon by itand that he, in turn, plays a part in itwith his thoughts?

Tem ple Echoes

t   w a s   Easter. Powerful

radio preachers thundered forth their version ofthe Easter message, andin most churches throughout the land the resurrection of Christ was cele brated, traditionally onthe third day following

His presumed death upon the cross.

The substance of the orthodox message is that by His physical resurrection Jesus overcame death, pointing theway to eternal life for all those who accept Him and believe in Him. Fu rthermore, according to the doctrine of vicarious atonement, in dying upon thecross Jesus assumed the collective sinsof humanity, and by this one great actof personal sacrifice atoned for them.Therefore, according to the logic ofdogma, if we “accept” Jesus as our personal savior our sins are forgiven,and following death we too shall beresurrected, awaiting the Day of Judgment when Christ will come in glory,a second time, to claim His own and to

 judge the world in its last days.

As we sat in a modest, beautiful littlechurch that Easter morning and listenedto the sincere words of the minister,there came to mind the facts stated byDr. H. Spencer Lewis in his remarkable

 book, The Mystical Life of Jesus.  According to the records of the Essenesand the Great White Lodge, the eventsof the last days of Jesus’ public missionwere far different than most personsrecognize.

In the first place—and this is start

ling to orthodox thinkers — Jesus did not  die upon the Cross!  He suffered and bled there, and yielded up something, bu t not life itself. He did relinquishthe special afflatus or “Christus” whichhad come to Him at the time of His

 baptism in the River Jordan. Just asHe was not born at the time of His baptism, so He did not die at the timeof crucifixion.

According to Essene records, whichwere available to Dr. Lewis in the

 preparation of his book, a stay of execution came from Rome which permitted the loyal followers of Jesus totake Him from the cross. His unconscious body was carried into the nearbytomb of Josef of Arimathea, where Heimmediately received the restorativetreatments of Essene healers. A violentstorm arose, driving the Roman sentriesto cover, and in the obscurity and confusion of the storm the Master was ledaway to the secret retreat atop Mt.Carmel. Many years later the GreatMaster actually relinquished His physical body in this same monastery of Mt.Carmel, which served during that period as the center of activities for theGrea t White Brotherhood in the Levant.

Truly, we can accept the emphasisof Easter, that death is unreal and no

final barrier to mankind, but for assurance we need accept no unhistoricaland fabricated tale of physical resurrection. We have all died many times

 before, and undoubtedly we shall again.The true guarantor of our personal andcollective immortality is the Mystical Christ Within,  as these columns havestated many times before. W hat endless errors arise from confusing the historical Jesus with the Mystical ChristPrinciple! Growth in Christ Consciousness is indeed the only salvation ofmankind, the only way out of the innumerable evils and dangers whichthreaten us. The Mystical Christ inthe collective heart of humanity is aDivine effulgence, the saving instrument of our eternal life and Onenesswith God. Let each aspirant, therefore,resurrect this inner Principle withinhis own heart, and with its aid andcomfort go forward along the road oftrue salvation.

Upon a careful consideration of thesefacts about the crucifixion, it is seentha t the doctrine of vicarious atonementsimply falls to the ground. There was

no death upon the cross, hence noatonement for sins in that manner.Furthermore, the law of Karma insiststhat each of us is morally self-responsible,  that we must atone for our ownsins and errors of omission and commission. Karma, or divine compensation, is a great teacher; we learnthrough experience in this life, or in asucceeding one, that Love is the greatlaw of life and that we must work out

the effects of all the causes which wehave initiated. Our immortality is thesame promise and hope as ever, but wemust earn and deserve  it by our ownefforts and evolving consciousness—notthrough the sacrifices of others.

These thoughts, and their considerable ramifications, gave us the pleasuresof a mystical Easter. We loved the inspiring music and appreciated the sincerity and fervor of the minister, butthanked the God of our Hearts inwardly for the truths that had come to usthrough AMORC—the greatest channelof today in the occidental world for thetraditions of the Essenes and the GreatWhite Lodge.

One of the most significant writingsto appear in the  Rosicrucian Digest   ma long time was the Thought of theMonth by our Imperator for April ofthis year, entitled “Today and Tomorrow.” Every member should rereadthis article very carefully, to assess adequately its enormous implications.

In this luminous article our Imperator shows that instead of the coveted“One World” we now have two worldsor spheres—namely, the Soviet sphereand the American sphere. Moscow andWashington have become the two political poles of the terrestrial magnet,

and the current political and diplomaticconfusions stem from the tug-of-war between the two spheres.

Our Impera tor is skeptical of the possibilities of welding the world togetherthrough adhesion,  or the voluntary adhering of sovereign nations to eachother in a firm and workable international organization. He suggests thatthe final One World can be obtainedonly through a cohesivie unity, brought

The Imperator is pessimistic in considering the possibility of lasting peace.The moral depravity of the greater part

of mankind is so pronounced that onecan hardly hope for a voluntary decision to abstain from using the terrible new weapons of science in terrificmutual destruction. The current modesof national and international moralitymake World War III practically inevitable.

Let us go all the way in thought withthe Imperator. In this terrible and,

 probably, last war a great pa rt of whatwe term modem civilization will bedestroyed. Not all of us will be amongthe survivors. What , then, shall we do

now? Shall we fly to pieces in panicand awful futility?We have no reasonable choice but to

continue the upward path we are nowtravelling. Everything that we buildwithin is for all time. If we do notsurvive the holocaust physically thereis no final concern, for we have died

 before in other bodies and lived againto continue the evolution of soul-per-sonality! If we are privileged to survive, our foremost duty will be to cherish the Light of mystical knowledge andto endeavor to reconstruct human so

ciety on the basis of sound philosophical principles. It is because those princi ples are now so flaunted and ignoredthat collective humanity is in such asorry plight.

The conscious realization of DivineWisdom is the most important mission of mankind. Civilizations, wars,

 plagues, and all manner of evil maycome and go, but God remains  forever,and man is here to learn more of thedivinity in nature and in his own being. The mystic is able to reach the

 perspective of centuries, to see an entire

historical epoch as the twinkling of aneye in the ultimate Cosmic Plan.Every great crisis, like the present

and future ones, should redouble ourinterest in and reliance upon the higher

 principles of life. The burden of theCross is great and its anguish keen.Every initiate must bear well his Cross,that he may know the Rose and senseits sweet unfoldment. Our tribulations

are part of the price of wisdom, whoserewards are incalculable and reach forward into eternity.

BOOK REVIEW:  Lookine Backward ., by Edward Bellamy, like the  Republic 

of Plato, is a monumental work inidealistic social thought. Dr. H. Spencer Lewis, writing several years ago inthe  Rosicrucian Forum , spoke of Bellamy’s opus as one of the most authentic social prophecies ever written aboutAmerica.

Bellamy wrote from the perspectiveof a former Christian minister, andtried to conceptualize an America inwhich the ethics of Jesus might findsocial and political expression. Henoted the powerful trend toward bigness, the rise of great corporations with

their interlocking mechanisms of control.  Looking Backward   envisions and pa rtly outlines an America of the year2000 A. D. in which the great industries and corporations come under public control and management, in the interest of all the people.

The society envisioned by EdwardBellamy stresses the equality before thelaw of its citizens. Each adult citizenreceives a basic yearly income whichwell provides the necessities and manyof the luxuries of life. The years ofgrowth until the age of 21 are spent in

 public education; from 21 to 45 thecitizen is devoted to national service,in that craft or profession to which heis best suited by nature and provenability. The years after 45 are given tocultural education, spiritual unfoldment, and the improvement of arts andcivilization.

The two focal points of controversyof our era—politics and religion—nolonger exist under the same forms inthe year 2000. Orthodox religion haslargely died out, through want of believers! To a considerable degree, re

ligion is the common life, broadly infused with spiritual values. Political bickering has disappeared, along withan evil money-and-profit system.

From our limited vantage point in1946, we look upon Bellamy’s Americain the twenty-first century as largelya Utopian dream. Bellamy, we say,lived before the atomic bomb and any

t h i n k   that one of the

most in te res t ing fac ts brought to our attentionis that which reveals thatscience, or one branch ofscience at least, is readyto give considerable credence to one of the claimsheld by mystics and mys

tic philosophers for many years.Until the AMORC in America pro

ceeded in a very scientific way to proveand demonstrate tha t human bodies hadauras of various colors which could bemade visible, and of such magnetic or

electric quality as could be measured,science in general and many of thespecific branches of science looked uponthe existence of human auras as something not only mystical but quitemythical, and the subject was considered taboo at the round table of scientists anywhere. In fact, the mystic andmystical philosopher found himself inan embarrassing position whenever heventured to suggest that human beingshad auras which could be detected ormeasured, or defined or registered.

There was a casual admission on the part of some branches of applied sciencethat there was a radiation or an emanation from the human body, most likelyin the form of heat waves, that could be detected by some devices or occasionally sensed even by the human consciousness of another person. It wasalso recognized that the human beingleft a telltale impression of some intangible something in his trails throughthe woods, and on grounds and in build

ings, through the detection of which

some animals, especially supersensitivedogs, could trace the movements ofindividuals. But beyond these casualadmissions, science was indeed reluctant to admit that there was anythingof a supernormal or spiritual or ethereal nature surrounding the human body,or emanating from it, which was asdistinctive in each individual case asthe voice of the individual or the facialexpression and appearance of an individual.

 Not long ago in The Rosicrucian Forum I discussed the fact that some of

us here at Headquarters could detectthrough our fingers, or through theaura that surrounded our fingers, thevibrations of some energy or of someelectrical or magnetic quality that remained on the paper and envelopes ofcommunications sent to us by our mem bers. I stated that this was detectablein a large proportion of the letters wereceive . . . We have constructed andcreated scientific instruments in ourscientific laboratories here which wouldmeasure either the quality or the polarity or the strength or nature of the vi brations emanating from human bodies,and the impress of these vibrations evenwhen made upon pieces of paper, handkerchiefs, jewelry, and other articlesthat had been in close contact withsome individuals for a time.

Some time ago we read in a magazine called  MacLeans*,  a magazine ofvery high standing and which is not

given to exploiting the foibles andfancies of daytime dreamers, an article by Charles Lugrin Shaw dealing withthe detection of criminals. In this article he revealed how science is usingsome psychological principles and scien

tific procedures to aid the criminologistsin their analytica l studies. He quotedJohn F. C. B. Vance, who has built upand maintained a reputation on thePacific Coast as the very nemesis oforganized crime. In fact, his application of scientific principles to crime detection and the detection of criminalshas gained for him an internationalreputation. He is not the type of detective who goes out and hunts for hisman. He remains hidden and secludedin his laboratory, and there, with theuse of psychological and scientific prin

ciples and methods, he discovers hiscriminal and classifies him and establishes his identity beyond any doubt,and his associates merely go out and

 bring in the man who has been thusdiscovered in the laboratory.

Mr. Vance states that the one new procedure which is destined to revolutionize all of the methods of the detection of criminals, even superseding or

 becoming of greater value than the examination of fingerprints or gun printsor bloodstains, is the careful study and

analysis of the impressions of thehuman aura that are left on recordsomewhere and in some manner inevery criminal case. Mr. Vance saysthat the distinctive human aura, inother words, the very distinct and different aura of every human individual,composed of an undefinable substance,is communicated to every object touched by or approached by every individual.In case of detection by fingerprints, thecriminal must actually touch some ob

 ject and touch it carefully, deliberately,although possibly unwittingly or un

knowingly, in order that there may beleft a traceable and definite imprint.In the case of the human aura, however, the individual need not actuallytouch a thing or be in contact with itin order to leave some impression, some

 Digest   Mr. Vance says that he does not at- June   tempt to explain, as yet, what he be-1946   lieves to be the cause or the reason for 

this strange aura that surrounds andemanates from every hum an being. Hesays it may be the same substance orthe same something that provides thescent for bloodhounds and which hasalways been too elusive for scientific

analysis—except that the AmericanIndians did learn of a way by whichto detect this strange registration of thehuman radiation, but even they did notattempt to study the cause or the reason. Mr. Vance says that chemicaltests made in his laboratory and otherlaboratories have encouraged experts to believe that every individual has a verydistinct aura, and that the big problemnow is to invent various scientific devices for detecting these auras, registering them, and classifying them.

He admits that great progress has been made in this regard and, of course,reluctantly reveals only a few facts concerning what is going on in his laboratory and similar laboratories. But Mr.Shaw, quoting Mr. Vance, states thatthe time may not be far distant whenthe detective or criminologist will go tothe place of a crime with some sort ofmachine or device, and with it be ableto detect and register the radiations ofa human aura that have been left inthe room or on objects in the room, and by means of these registrations be able

to definitely classify and even distinguish the nature , character, personality,and appearance of the individual beingsought.

The important thing to all of us isnot that as new devices are being invented for the commission of crime orthe commission of injury and destruction, such as new guns, silent pistols,explosive devices, poison gases, andother elements that are useful to criminals, so the detection of crime hasevolved and progressed until the criminal finds it more difficult to match his

wits and his ability against the scientificdevices and against the police facilitiessuch as the radio, the prowler cars, thesignal system, and similar modern creations. The really important thing to allof us is that at last another one of the

 basic contentions and basic beliefs ofthe mystic philosophers of old and ofthe present time is receiving some scientific recognition and relieving the mystical philosopher and student of mysti

cism of the expense and tedious laborof devising ways and means to proveand demonstrate his contentions.

Radio, television, and many otherelectrical devices have amply proved

and demonstrated in recent years manyof the principles held by mystic philosophers in their teachings for severalcenturies, and yet which were difficultto prove or demonstrate otherwise except in very expensively equippedlaboratories. Science has recently provedtha t thoughts produce electrical or someother form of energetic radiations fromthe brain and nervous system and thatthese can be measured and registered.Mystical philosophers for years claimedthat this was so, and in their mystical

 practices and in the privacy of their

sanctums they were able to prove tothemselves and to others that concentrated thought energy did radiate beyond the limits of the flesh of thehuman body although science considered this as another one of the mythical theories of the mystics.

For years science has contended thatthe moon had little or no effect uponanything on this earth except to influence the bulk or mass of bodies of waterand thus cause tides. The contentionsof the mystic philosophers regardingthe moon’s influence upon all living

things and upon magnetic and electricalcircuits on the earth and through theearth were considered absurdities byscience even though thousands of individuals, including those who knewnothing of mystical principles, demonstrated to their entire satisfaction thatthe moon’s phases did have an effectupon planting, growing, and reaping ofall forms of plant life and upon the development of animal life beginning withthe embryo. The mystics also claimedthat the phases of the moon had something to do with the periodic changes

in the emotional reactions and mentalreasoning of persons of unbalanced orunsound mind, and that the ancientswere right in their beliefs in that regard, and therefore called such persons“lunatics” as being victims of the influence of luna. In recent years themystics have proved that the development of diseases, the progress toward acrisis and the relapse therefrom were incycles rhythm ic with the moon’s phases.

Years ago we proved here at Rosicrucian Park, by the astonishing development of large plots of grass andshrubbery of all kinds, that if the planting was done at the proper phase of themoon, the growth and developmentwould be rapid and luxurious, while ifthe same seed and the same processwere used at the wrong phase of themoon, the growth and developmentwere meager indeed. These experimentsand the results therefrom have arousedconsiderable attention in this part ofCalifornia.

We have installed in our planetariuma large and extremely sensitive seismograph, identical with those that are located in the government observatoriesand capable of registering the slightesttemblors or undulations of the earth,of its surface or interior for hundredsor thousands of miles in distance. Aftera few days’ study of the recordings onthis instrument, we found that the phases of the moon did have some bearing upon the peculiar effects on theearth that were registered upon theseseismograph charts, and in consultationwith an excellent expert in this subject,we found that he, too, had noted over acourse of years peculiar conditions inthe weather and in the interior andsurface effects of the ear th tha t were coincident with certain periodic changes

of the moon.On the other hand, we have demon

strated throughout America, in its

{nincipal cities to a great number ofarge audiences, our own wonderful

Cosmic-ray machine, the first of its kindever made and demonstrated, whichmade visible and made audible the effects of rays of energy from Cosmicspace that came toward this earth andaffected it, and other rays or waves ofelectric energy which passed throughthe earth and over the surface of the

earth. But now we find, with the operation of this Cosmic ray instrument andthe seismograph in the same building,that certain Cosmic rays of certainstrengths and quality which register onthe Cosmic Ray machine do cause certain forms of registration on the seismograph charts. . . .

Thus Rosicrucian research workersand students are not mere dreamersand impractical theorists.

Practically every fundamental principle of a mystical, psychic, and spiritual nature contained in our monographsand teachings has been tested anddemonstrated on scientific instrumentsmanufactured or assembled here in our

laboratories. And we find that ourmembers generally, or a very large pro portion, are more interested in the scientific analysis of the mystical princi

 ples of life than in the purely theoretical or the purely religious. h i s   volume, as Mr. Doddwrote of an earlier one onanother phase of the same

subject, “Must be takento be a payment on account of a truth”: thetruth being the completesetting forth of FrancisBacon as the greatest Eng-

This writer recalls that as an impressionable adolescent he read that FrancisBacon had been charged with accepting bribes; but that he had defended himself by saying that although gifts from both litigants in a suit had been ac

cepted, his decision had remained un biased. Such inform ation, and Mr.Dodd shows it to be the grossest misinformation, is doubtless still the fareof those who are passed through our

. . school systems. It is one more example Rostcructan  Qf Napoleon’s famous remark: “W hat Digest   is history but a fable agreed upon?”June Because the writings of Mr. Dodd are1946   variations on one theme does not by

any means imply that he leaves thefactual or realistic elements out of his

 books and deals only in maudlin

twaddle. Thus, his books do not pleadfor attention; they demand it.Of all who in the past fifty years or

so have written in defense of FrancisBacon, Dodd is the most deadly, for heis armed with fact. As undaunted asDavid with his shepherd’s sling, he hasas confidently come forth to battle withGoliath. He is sure and fearless as hefaces the boastful giant of apathy, indifference, accepted opinion, prejudice,and misinformation.

Each in turn, to use an extremelyhomely but apt description, is “knocked

into a peak and the peak knocked off.”However much he may love Bacon, heloves truth more, and never deserts hismeticulous and painstaking accumulation and presentation of fact. So com pletely has he exposed the frailty and prejudice of those who heretofore have been adjudged careful scholars andShakespearean authorities that they ofnecessity must hereafter be set down as

shaken reeds in whom no trust can be placed. And if in the future anyonedare to refer to what Macaulay orCampbell or Abbott or Dean Churchhad to say of Bacon’s supposed guilt, itwill be at the risk of branding himselfas vicious, partisan, and prejudiced asthe man he quotes.

Mr. Dodd’s scholarship is of a kindsuch as has been rarely seen for manya long day; the kind which does notaccept or quote as true what some so-called authority has written: He goesto authentic documents and sources forhis facts, and lets the would-be scholarsfall where they may. A more closelyreasoned or carefully documented ex position of fact would be hard to find,unless one were to name another ofMr. Dodd’s books.

What, then, is Mr. Dodd’s thesis inThe Martyrdom of Francis Bacon? Itis that Francis Bacon’s impeachmentwas not only the travesty of justice butalso the sacrifice of an innocent andgood man to save a clique of worthlessand unprincipled ones. The whole caseis minutely examined against the background of the times; me motives andmethods of the principals laid bare; the proceedings set forth in detail, and the

whole carefully reviewed and reevaluated in the light of contemporarydocumentary evidence. Nothing seemsomitted in this amazing study. All sortsof records and documents are probedand forced to yield up evidence.

The conclusion reached is that Francis Bacon’s fall was due to his virtuerath er than because of any vice. Itavails nothing to say that such couldnot have been the case: Mr. Dodd’s proof is irrefragable. One cannot adequately establish Mr. Dodd’s thoroughness and forthrightness in dealing withsuch a confused and contradictory massof material without extensive quotationfrom the book itself. After all, nothingis to be gained by encouraging readersof a review in the belief that they haveread the book; nor will it serve truthin the least to have their passive ap

 probation.Here is a book which is a challenge:

It irrevocably scraps most of what has passed as the true history of Eliza bethan England and sets forth in un paralleled fashion the nobility of oneman, Francis Bacon. It is one of those books which in Bacon’s own words willdeserve to be well chewed and thoroughly digested. —T

lamy. Surely in such a civilizationmystical principles and esoteric wisdomwould find supreme expression!

Let us hope that  Looking Backward  was more than a dream, and thatthrough a gifted writer the Cosmic revealed to later readers some intimationsof a society whose basic institutions and purposes would conform with the highest ideals knowable to humanity.

Overhead in the Temple Chapel isthe figure of the sky goddess  Nut,  making an arch of heaven with her bodycovering the whole space. Goddess Nutstands in water and is clothed in water.From her there issue both the sun andthe moon. On the walls of the Templewe see the goddess Hathor representedin hieroglyphics. She is also symbolizedas a figure of a hawk within a square,denoting Horus the Sun-god in hisabode. Hathor was the receiver of thesetting sim, Horus—harboring him during the night and restoring him in themorning as the young Horus. To theEgyptians, she represented all that wasgood and beautiful.

The elaborate ceiling decoration ofthe Hathor Temple is entirely astronomical. This is the square Zodiac ofDendera pictorializing star boats, decanstars, phases of the moon, and a sceneshowing the sun shining on the Temple.The signs of the Zodiac, such as theFish, Ram, Bull, and Twins, are outstanding along with mythological processions of personages representing constellations. This Zodiac definitely associates Egyptian mythology with astronomy.

In the middle section of the square

is portrayed the sun’s course in different parts of the day and of the year.Twelve positions of the sun are represented by twelve boats of Horus.

The signs of the Zodiac are perhapsthe oldest of all symbols. On a Babylonian boundary stone, erected duringthe time of Nebuchadnezzar, are foundcarved representations of the constellations of the Zodiac with symbols of the

 planets, sun, and moon. The stone ap pears to be a dedication or convocationto heavenly deities. Throughout theworld in such countries as China, India,Mexico, and Yucatan, have been foundancient circular Zodiacs as ornately and

 precisely finished as those in the OsirisTemple of Dendera. The Osiris Templeis found on the roof of the Temple ofHathor and may be reached by two

 j? :  stairways. There we find the only ostcru t n  ],nown circular Egyptian Zodiac. In

circumpolar constellations. Here wesee a cow in a boat, representing Hathorand Horus; Orion the Hunter is alsodepicted. In the center of the Zodiacwe have a jackal which represents UrsaMinor; near it is a hippopotamus, rep

resenting what is now called the constellation of Draco.

Again we have the Ox Thigh, nowcalled Ursa Major,  or Big Dipper. It isthought that when Dendera was built,nearly 7000 years ago, it was orientedto the star  Dubhe  in this northern constellation. Hundreds of years laterwhen Dendera was restored, its amplitude, which was still towards the northeast, was directed to the star Thuban in the constellation of the hippopotamusor Draco, the hippopotamus being oneof the venerated gods in Egypt and

having been preceded by the crocodile.The orientation was suitable because ofthe polar precession of these constellations, and as Dubhe moved out of linewith Dendera, Thuban gradually tookits place.

The thirty-six figures do not composea true Zodiac, but rather a planisphereor sky map of the northern hemisphere.The Lion is shown with prominence asare the Bull, Pisces, Crab, Capricorn,Aquarius, the Ram, Virgo, Libra, theTwins of Gemini, the Scorpion, andother constellations, thus showing thatwe identify the same constellations withthe same characters and names as didthe ancient Egyptians.

A thing of beauty and of particularinterest is a human form carved in relief in the ceiling beside the circularZodiac. It is a huge unadorned femalefigure representing the goddess  Nut   ofthe heavens. This justifies the contention that the Egyptians always exhibited their finest works of art in theirTemples.

On the walls of the Hathor Temple

is the surveyor’s description of layingthe foundation, “The living God nourished by the sublime goddess in theTemple stretches the rope with joy.With his glance toward the middle ofthe Ox Thigh he establishes the Templehouse of the mistress of Dendera.”

A point of interest is the fact that theTemple of Mut at Thebes was orientedto Dubhe and Draco, as was the Hathor

Temple. Within the brick wall-enclosure of Hathor Temple is thesmaller Temple of Isis, the latter being

 built at right angles to Hathor and oriented to Sirius, the bright blue, blazingstar seen in the southeast. Sirius, longcalled the Dog Star, was consecrated inEgypt to Anubis who was the god ofthe dead and was symbolized as havinga dog’s head. Isis Temple was one ofseven oriented to Sirius.

Because it is oriented to stars in thecircumpolar precessions, the HathorTemple of Dendera will continue toserve its original purpose as future centuries become the present, and pass oninto the limbo of time; even though noidol-worshipping Egyptians will standin the axis of the Temple to watch

Polaris, the present star lighting theTemple, move out of focus, and be followed by Gamma, Deneb, and Vega.It will be 22,760 years hence before thelight of Thuban will again be shiningdown on the axis of Hathor.

As years rolled into centuries and theoriginal peoples of the Nile lived and

 passed on, never having reached recorded history, and were succeeded bythousands of generations leaving theirworks in stone, who knows how manyEgyptians have stood in the darknessof the Dendera Temple waiting for the

first gleam of a star in the north to penetrate the awe-laden silence of theTemple and reveal the splendor of thefigure of the goddess of Hathor in aniche in the far end of the sanctuary,while the impressively robed priestschanted in low tones and moved aboutin performance of their ritualisticduties. Not to them is it known thatthe little statue in the sanctuary haslong since disappeared and that thegoddess has been proved to have butfeet of clay.

We have elaborated at length on the beautiful Temple at Dendera, becauseit gives us an historical background forthe new Supreme Temple to be built atRosicrucian Park this year. All Rosicrucians will be interested in knowingthat the new Temple will be a modifiedexterior replica of the Hathor Temple

 just described. Fronted with majesticcolumns and elaborately decorated with

colorful figures and designs of representative Egyptian art, this splendidTemple will be oriented to the southeast. The bright blue star Sirius  maylight the Rosicrucian Temple portals asit did those of Dendera so long ago.

One of the Dendera Zodiacs will bereproduced within the Rosicrucian Su-

reme Temple, so that members mayave an appreciation of the original

Zodiac and the astronomical knowledgeof the early Egyptians at Dendera.Further m ention of the interior appointments of the Supreme Temple will bemade at another time.

The Egyptian architecture of thisstructure will blend in with the oriental designs of all of the other wonderful

 buildings surrounded by green lawns

at Rosicrucian Park. Very likely, visitors will see lofty, graceful palms standing as guardians of the Supreme Templeamid luxurious plants of tropic climesand blooming lotus flowers, as did thedevotees of the Hathor Temple.

Hundreds of Rosicrucians will beseated at one time in the 183-foot longTemple as they come to participate inthe convocation devotionals of dissemination and perpetuation of truth andthe laws of the Cosmic. In the profound sanctity of this great Temple,there will not be an idol of a goddess

foisted upon the people by Egyptianriests. There will be, however, a con-ition where the presence of God or

the Cosmic forces may be invoked; suchwill not be invoked by magical rites, but by the sincere devotion of the individual in the Temple and the domination of the spiritual self.

Since time immemorial, the flickering lights called stars  have sent thechallenge to man to understand himself and the universe. The celestiallamps have ever lighted the path of lifefor man. Perhaps with interest bomanew, the silent stars will become formankind something more than faraway points of light. Perhaps, unlikethe Egyptians assembled in the HathorTemple of Dendera, we may see in thestately processions of lighted tapers, being borne across the firmament, a newlight which will sustain and endow allwith understandable guidance and direction.

Earthquakes and Nervous Responses 

h a t   sound and color, aswell as vibratory effectson psychic centers, arecharacteristics of the nature of earthquakes isevidenced by reports received in response to anarticle entitled “PsychicEffect of Earthquakes,”

which appeared in the August-Septem- ber, 1945, issue of the  Rosicrucian Digest.  The following information has

 been compiled from letters describingearthquake experiences in different sections of the world, including Australia,India, New Zealand, Panama, Palestine,Jamaica, besides various parts of the

United States and Canada.An outstanding feature in which a

number of the letters concurred wasthat there often is a noticeable exhilarating effect upon the nervous system.Those who mentioned fear said thatthey were both “terrified and thrilled”; bu t most of the writers felt that therewas no fear because there was no timefor it. The indications also were thatthe thinking processes became inhibitedor spellbound during the earthquake ex periences.

“I was in bed under a doctor’s care,”

wrote one person, “but in spite of thefact that the doctor considered me as being on the verge of a nervous breakdown . . . the physical sensation was

hilarating and helpful, since it enablesme to be calm and at the same timealert . . . which condition seems to helpothers around me by means of its vibratory transmission to them.”

Although some reported a state ofnausea and dizziness as a reaction to ashakeup, others specified no discomfort, or any reaction in particular. Someof the reports described a quivering, orvibratory sensation in the region of thesolar plexus, a well-recognized psychiccenter, and in connection with this astate of stillness and expectancy manyhours prior to the event.

The impressions where sufficiently

 powerful became vividly and indeliblya part of the consciousness, and although years may have passed the incident may be recalled in all its minutedetails as if it had just recently hap

 pened. To substantiate this rem ark, wequote parts of a letter received fromAustralia and reporting on an experience in Calcutta, which took place in1897, or fifty years ago:

“I was sitting and reading a paperwhich I had received from London andwas leaning back on my chair whichwas balancing on the hind legs. I had

 been out to a cotton mill to test its electrical installation tha t morning and wasfeeling somewhat tired as it had beenhot and muggy. The rains (monsoon)were due to arrive that day and as Idrove back from the mill it started torain lightly, but as the clouds wereheavy I thought to myself ‘thank goodness the rains have broken at last.’ Ithad been a trying June. . . .”

After he realized that an earthquakehad tipped his chair, the writer furtherstates: “I seized my topee and rushedout without my coat, which was on the

 bed. As I went through the door a picture hanging above the door fell on my

left shoulder as I turned toward thestaircase.”

Many of our readers may be interested in a recollection of the San Francisco earthquake of the year 1906,which is recorded among the world’sgreat earthquakes. This phenomenal occurrence is related by an eyewitnesswho at tha t time lived in a lumber campin northern California:

“. . . the earth was moving in greatocean waves as high as a one and one-half story house. The waves were rolling just the same as on the ocean. Itwas while witnessing this terrible un

 believable sight that we also saw thetips of the tall pine and fir trees touchthe ground. This is how the performance was made possible: as a wave

 passed un der a tree that tree wouldride the wave in contour and when atree was on the side of the wave, eitherone side or the other, the tree would belying horizontal to the earth and thetreetop would touch the wave coming

 behind or the one just ahead of thewave on which the tree was riding, de

 pending on which side of the wave thetree was.”

Almost as spectacular is a phenomenon reported from “New Zealand’sWonderland and Thermal Region,”where geysers appear and disappear andone may suddenly spring up even “inthe middle of a city street.”

“I have known as many as twenty-four separate quakes within a 24-hour period . . states one write r. Amidsuch frequency, many specific experiences accumulate, and we quote further:

“In our family of six only my fatherand I are sensitive to the unusual conditions which surround us. . . . Fatherand I would inform the others of a

 pending series of earthquakes to be ex pected within a few hours. Our experiences were identical, but none of theothers (members of the family) noticedthe unusual; however our predictionswere so accurate that our warningswere never disregarded and the neigh

 bors would also be warned a few hoursin advance.” These observations weremade from the seeing or sensing of a“steel-grey” color and of an underlying“dead stillness.”

In the interest of forewarnings or precognition, several writers narratedtheir dreams of earthquakes as authentic evidence. The actual shocks sometimes took place many hours as well asmiles distant from the dreamer.

Others narrated premonitions of coming disaster, received even while awake.Here is one:

“My husband and I had been in Oakland for a vis it We decided to leavequite early one morning and drive toLos Angeles. When we arrived in Santa Barbara my husband felt rather tired

of driving. So we decided to stay overnight at the Arlington Hotel. We wereassigned a corner room. Then we freshened up and went to the dining roomfor dinner. Suddenly, I started toshiver, not from cold because it wasvery warm that evening, but I felt awfully uneasy as though something wouldfall down on me. My husband noticedmy uneasiness and asked, “What is thematter? Don’t you feel well?”

This woman then answered her hus band th at she had a peculiar feeling asthough the whole hotel might fall down

on her, but he laughed it off, she re ports, with the statement that she wastired and needed rest. However, thisdid not quiet her:

“After we finished our dinner andwere resting on a spacious veranda, Ikept on feeling more and more uneasyand finally I told my husband, ‘Please,dear, let us get out of here; I simplycannot stand it any longer. Let us driveto Los Angeles; it is not late and theevening is so beautiful.’ ‘What aboutthe room we have engaged?’ was hisanswer.

“I replied that it didn’t matter if wehad ten rooms engaged that I simplywould not stay overnight. My husbandrealized that it was something unusualtha t affected me. He cancelled ourroom and we left for Los Angeles. Ittook me a long time to get over thathorrid feeling that something was coming down on me, and before I was released from th at psychic effect my bodyshook violently.

“In the morning at twenty minutes before seven o’clock, June 29, 1925, theArlington Hotel was demolished by anearthquake and so was the very roomwe would have been in had we remained overnight. A lady who wasoccupying a suite in that same towerwas killed outright when the entiretower crumbled by the weight of awater reservoir which was situated ontop.”

A rather uncanny demonstration offorewarning was that of being awakened from sleep by a loud knock, orknocking at the door, and finding noone present. This was reported by morethan one person. The mcident wouldoccur in sufficient time to allow the individual to dress before the manifestation of the quake.

A number of persons reported that asto earthquake characteristics whichwere seen, heard, or felt, not every body present would be conscious ofthem; this applies also to colors. Someof those who have the ability to seecolors as caused by the natural magneticvibrations, have difficulty in describingthem. They may be seen several hoursin advance or at the exact time of theshakeup. The color has been called

 bluish-purple, steel-grey, steel-blue, ormetallic. It has also been referred to asa rainbow-colored vapor rising fromthe earth during the shocks.

The noise of an approaching earthquake, too, called forth a variety of 

 phrases from various persons: It is aloud rumble, noise, or roar; it soundslike thunder, like a four-motored plane,like an explosion, or like a strange wind plowing through dead leaves; or it isfelt rather than heard, and it is notheard by everybody.

That animals are not immune tothese effects was also an observation.For hours, prior to a shakeup, horseshad refused to go into barns, dogswhined if placed under cover; in otherwords, instinctively animals wish tostay outdoors, in preparation for atemblor. Birds do not sing and insectsremain silent, perhaps for many hoursin advance.

The information, or summary, presented here is not meant to be a finalconclusion, definitely applicable to manand his universe. The impressions received are individual interpretations ofeffects as registered on the consciousness of certain persons during earthquake experiences. They vary just asthe comprehension and the glandularand nervous setup of the people themselves vary. Since each person is hisown laboratory, there is sufficient interest created as to how he concurs ordiffers with another person in similarsituations. This study is a fur ther challenge to the admonishment “Know thy

h e   chaos in the world today is only apparent. Inactuality, law reigns su

 preme. Law is universaland unch angin g . Ofcourse, I refer to divinelaw. It is true that dom in ion over the ear thwas given to man, and as

a result the world is what man’s mindhas created throughout the ages. Man-made law may be compared to rules

and regulations. They are similar tothe traffic regulations that are supposedto make life less difficult on this planet.Laws that man makes, man can break; but divine laws man can not break.

Divine law is of a wholly differentnature . It functions on every plane,

 physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Nothing that exists is exempt fromits control. Because divine law is unchangeable it makes life on our planet

 predictable and dependable. For exam ple, we can work out a calendar for

man y years in advance. We can predict comets and eclipses. We can buildskyscrapers and airplanes and bridges.We can express in mathematical formulas the constitution of the various elements. Were the laws upon which thisuniverse was founded not absolutely de

 pendable, none of these achievementswould be possible. No formula of science or mathematics would work a second time. An experiment basically ac

curate can be performed innumerabletimes with invariably the same result.

The fact that divine law is immutabledoes not mean that we are to fear it.It means that we must make the effortto study it, to know as much of it as is

 possible, and to guide our lives therebytor our good and our protection. In thisuniverse, benefit is derived from knowledge; control and power come fromknowledge.

Dynamite is a dangerous substance

for a careless, uninformed individualto handle; yet knowledge has transformed dynamite into an indispensablerequirement for building purposes andcoal production. Electricity, too, can

 prove dangerous to the average un informed individual, and yet no one needsto be reminded of the blessings of electricity. Knowledge of the laws of electricity has made possible its control andutilization for a large number of modern inventions. Electricity, as well asdynamite, has always existed in the universe. We, however, did not have the

necessary knowledge to control theseelements until in very recent times.The atomic energy, which now is receiving so much attention from our scientists, has also existed from the beginning of time, but still there is a greaterenergy with far more revolutionary

 power than dynam ite, electricity, andatomic force which are available toman. This energy is the Mind of Godand Man—the Cosmic energy.

Divine law is unfailing in its manifestation. We, however, do not knowall the factors involved. Besides, ourknowledge of divine law is limited. Weare still babes in the woods. We know,for example, that love is the greatest

{>ower in the universe. We know thatove is always a basic principle in theuniverse. Infraction of the law of lovealways brings a reaction. All forms ofcruelty are the worst infraction of thisgreat universal principle. However, inany particu lar instance, we do not knowall the modifying factors involved.While the relationship between causeand effect may appear to be retributionfrom one point of view, it is merely thelaw of consequences from a natural, scientific point of view.

The average individual who refuses

to believe in the immutability of divinelaw, or refuses to believe in the existence of divine law altogether, mustlearn through bitter experience. Hemay even have to learn through frustration, loss, pain, and agony. Such a person is tossed hi ther and yon on thesea of life. He is like a ship without arudder and compass. To such an individual, life seems unplanned and meaningless. Accident, chance, and fate seemto have the control.

He who has learned to accept the factof divine law can begin to control hislife. At least he is able to understandits vicissitudes. He can study the divinelaw, and every bit of knowledge that hegains gives him so much more controlover events. With the utmost confidence he can cast his bread upon thewaters. He can work at his character,knowing that what he attains is a permanent possession. He can keep on increasing his knowledge knowing thatnot one useful fact will ever be lost. Hecan throw all his strength into somegreat cause, knowing that not one particle of his effort is really lost. Whatever loss there is, is only apparent.Every rivulet adds to the flowing tide,and one day a torrent rushes downthe mountainside, a veritable Niagara,ready to be harnessed to do the nation’swork.

The student of divine law is no longerdeflected by the irrelevant, the superficial, the temporary circumstances, orevents. For example, the man whoknows  refuses to eat food the taste of 

which he likes but which gives no nourishment and in the course of time wouldactually injure him. He is not led astray

 by the fact that a few meals show noharmful consequences.

It is quite otherwise with the unin

formed individual. All he sees is thatone meal does not kill. He can no t beconcerned about the harmful consequences to his nerves and digestivesystem a year or more thence. Thediseases of middle life and of old ageseem to descend from nowhere uponunhappy man. The fact is tha t theyare the accumulated results of a lifetime of wrong eating and drinking andliving habits. It is necessary to beginin youth to prevent the diseases of middle-life. It is possible even then to overcome many of them, provided the nec

essary effort is made. Once again thelaws must be studied and the necessarysacrifice in time and energy and effort

 be made. Knowledge gives control. Ofcourse, a point may be reached wherethe damage to the physical organism isirreparable. Even then, through knowledge, adjustments may be made in otherways.

We can endure affliction courageously and patiently, knowing that we precipitated it upon ourselves through

 breaking the law, whether consciouslyor unconsciously. We know tha t divinelaw must eventually turn affliction intoa blessing. Divine law works ever tohelp, to educate, to improve, to adjust,and to sublimate. Apparent evil worksfor good, obstacles become stepping-stones, and defeat is turned into victory. He who comes to scoff, frequentlyremains to pray. He who has cheatedfinds tha t he cheated only himself. Hewho stabs in the back, is himself stabbedin the back.

Through even a little knowledge ofthe law of karma we can avoid muchevil in our lives. Killing for mere pleasure, for sport, is not the deed of a kindly human being. We should not tortureanimals. We should do all in our powerto make people aware of these crimesin their midst in which we all aremorally implicated. We should makeevery effort to be harmless in our relationships with every human being thatwe contact. Nobler it is to demonstrate

 positive love. If this seems difficult, thenwe can start on the climb upward spirit

ually by attempting to avoid positiveharm and injury, by trying to be harmless.

If we know the law, if we are toavoid evil and do good, as far as is possible, then knowledge is necessary. Itis foolish to play the part of the ostrichand hide our heads in the sand whendanger threatens. Let us not fear toknow the truth and to act firmly in accordance with our better understanding.

If the law works for seeming evil,then it invariably also works for good.With knowledge of the law, let us putin operation as many good causes as possible. Let us do all the good we canin all the ways that we can. Let us beas positive and as constructive as wecan on every plane—through thoughtsof love, words of love, and deeds ofcompassion, and heroism. Let us seekno reward. Let us seek no immediateresults. Let us act from the highest motive. Let love of mankind and love ofGod be the sole motive. In this beautiful way, we bum up the evil karma ofthe past, and prepare for a more radiantfuture. At the same time, and this factshould be a tremendous source of pleasure, we are helping people every stepof the way. An even greater source of

leasure is that we are doing our littleit toward the fulfilling of the divine

 plan for evolution. We are working

with God as well as helping our fellowmen. We are working with the constructive forces of the universe andserving as channels for these forces inno matter how insignificant a way.

Wider opportunities are the result ofgood karma. Genius is accumulatedgood karma. Development on every

 plane can be continued from one incarnation to another. What knowledgeand understanding we acquire and ap

 ply in this present incarnation bringsus that much nearer our goal. We canconsciously control this development.We can understand the laws governinghealth and disease. We can learn thelaws governing our so-called destiny,and control our steps on the path tothe Divine Fountain Head. We canlearn of our infinite potentialities anddevelop them. We can extend our influence for good. With confidence and joy, we can do the utmost possible withour present possibilities and opportunities.

At the same time, with a philosophyextolling the virtues of savagery spreading throughout the world, with acts of

 brutality and greed increasing, it is necessary to remind decent human beingseverywhere that God is not mocked. Hedoes not cease to exist because peoplechoose to ignore Him. Divine laws stilloperate though some misguided individuals attem pt to break them. Everyact of cruelty must bear its unhappyconsequence. With the evil in the worldcontinually mounting, it is our duty,

our privilege, to stand firmly behindthe teachings of the Ancient Wisdomand bear witness to eternal truth,through even the smallest acts in ourdaily lives.

and the air mist-ladened,we d imly d iscern themore prominent contoursof the opposite arm. Wecan only guess at its details.

So it is when we lookacross the departed centuries which divide us from the nations of antiquity.Only Greece and Rome appease ourhunger for history. The others are enveloped in a veil of legend. We canonly guess at details.

Yet there are three clear facts indis

 putably made manifest.The first is that civilizations haveconsistently and persistently movedwestward. Like the stars they appearfirst in the east, and, while growinand gathering strength, move westwar 

 —China, India, Persia, Egypt, Greece,Rome, Spain, France, England, America. Even in America tne westwardcourse has continued. Like the stars,again these remote civilizations reachtheir zenith of greatness, as Greece under Pericles or Rome under Trajan;then, having culminated, they decline

and fade from our vision. Some musthave disappeared into traceless oblivion.We need not be unduly perturbed if

civilization leaves Europe. It is following its appointed course. It travels inthe wake of the stars.

And the second clear fact is that eachcivilization is accompanied by a religion. So clear is this that excavators,

having discovered relics of some primitive culture, alwrays seek for its religious

 beliefs. Indeed religious relics are oftenall that remains of some remote greatness. This is the case with Stonehengein England and the Vedas of India.Wherever, in fact, we find a great civilization there also is a great religion.

It is foolish to dismiss all these faithsas superstition. It is even more foolishto dismiss them all but one, the one intowhich we ourselves happen to have been bom.

Often faiths of different ages and remote regions proclaim the same spiritual fact while using a different sym

 bolism. Many insist on a trin ity . TheEgyptians had Osiris, Isis, and Horus;India had Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva

 —or the creator, the preserver, and thedestroyer. The Greeks had truth, beauty, and goodness. Christians, of course,have their trinity; and man, created inGod’s image, is likewise threefold,namely body, soul, and spirit.

This is not empty dogmatism. It reveals a profound mystery, namely, theincomprehensible union of two opposites. From the union of the beginningwith the end, proceeds duration. Space

is the union of the infinite with thefinite, as time of the eternal with thetransitory. It is universal in its application pervading our humblest activities. Legislation is bom of opposing political principles. Price proceeds fromthe unseen contact of supply and demand.

AJl religions point to a future life;many teach reincarnation. This is most prominent in Buddhism and Hinduism.

It was held by the ancient Egyptians.It is taught by nearly all the Greekthinkers. Hum e said of it tha t it wasthe only theory of human destiny a

 philosopher could consider. Nor is this

doctrine restricted to great religions anddeep thinking philosophers. Frazer inhis work The Golden Bough  tells ustha t the idea of living again is natura llyaccepted by the primitive tribes of Australia. Reinach in his history of religion says the ancient Gauls would often

 borrow money under a promise to repayit in a future life.

Most religions again look back tosome semi-divine founder, whom theHindus call avatars. Orpheus, Hermesthe Thrice Great, Zoroaster, Krishna,and Buddha have all helped countless

hosts in their ceaseless quest.We frequently find quite differentstories indicating the same ideal. Thestory of Rama and Sita is very differentto tna t of Adam and Eve. Each in itsown sphere has served to sanctify marriage. The story of how Indra onceopened the gates of Svarga, the Hindu paradise, has enabled Hindus, likeChristians, to cry triumphantly, “Odeath! Where now thy victory?”

Some of the sublimest utterances areof dateless antiquity. Ponder the ma

 jestic mystery of Krishna’s claim, “With

one fragment of myself I pervade thewhole universe and I remain.” “Asabove so below” is attributed to Hermes; “Call no man happy till he isdead,” to Solon. The simplest again areoften the most helpful. A genuine ap

 plication of the injunction “Judge not”would enable us to realize heaven.There would be no sin and no sinners;even a partial application would abolishmost wars and all religious persecution.Then we have the Zoroastrian promise“Whosoever is content with whatreaches him has his nourishment with

out drudgery”; and there is its Christian counterpart, “Your heavenly fatherknoweth ye have need of these things.”

We need not be perturbed if folks donot go to church as they used to do.Man is a religious being. Religion andcivilization are wedded.

And the third clear fact is that eachmighty civilization achieves some greatfeat. This is generally something which

none of its predecessors had even imagined. It becomes their gift to mankind.

Egypt, whose sphinx seems to holdin its keeping the final mystery, has,

 by many, been supposed to have givenus our alphabet. What an immense upward step from the cuneiforms of anearlier date. The Hebrews have givenus religion. No modern divine has remotely approached the sublime grandeur of the Hebrew prophets. FromGreece we have received literature and philosophy. There is an ocean of admiration contained in the phrase, “Theglory that was Greece.” The gift of theRomans was imperial statecraft. EvenAmerica, which owes less than anymodem nation to Rome, names its chief

legislative assembly the Senate and itassembles in the Capitol. The Arabianshave given us the symbols for our numerals. How could modem science orcommerce be carried on had it not beenfor this Arabian gift?

And there are civilizations whichonly live now in the twilight of history.It was the astrologers of Babylon wholearned to measure the movements ofthe stars. In their day thev expandedman’s vision as much as the thinkersof Greece. It is probable that they gaveus our seven-day week. There are

others whose star has set, who haveassed finally into oblivion, but whoave yet left us their legacy. Who first

learned to erect buildings of stone?Who first subjugated the terrifying element of fire and made it man’s servant?

What of modem civilization? Whatis to be our gift to nations as yet un- bom? What, in short, is our missionto mankind?

There is only one achievement inwhich we are superior to any or all ofthe ancients. It is practical science.

 Neither the Greeks nor the Romans,

neither the Hebrews nor the people ofBabylon ever traveled by train or broadcast by radio.

This may yet prove the richest of alllegacies.

For thus enriched, earth’s many millions can be supplied with an abundance of material necessities. Noneneed want.

If however any nation uses the powerof science for destruction this goal can

SINCERITY

r o b a b l y   few of us havestopped to contemplatethe meaning of the customary ending of a letter.In universally adoptedterminology, in accordance with the rules ofletter-writing, the wordssincerely yours, or words

of a similar meaning, are frequentlyused. The literal implication of thesewords would indicate that they sealthe meaning of the letter. They arethe assurance of the good will of the

 j ' f ie  writer, and further convey the idean   • • that within the letter itself the best theKostcructan  could do has been stated, Digest   an(j j^s statements are true and June   made entirely for the welfare of the1946   recipient. Possibly we have all had the

experience of receiving a letter whichdid not bear good news or one whichcontained news of a disappointing ordisillusioning nature, and we havestopped to question how sincere theletter might be and whether or notthere might be the possibility that thefinal closing words may have beenrather hollow and meaningless.

Sincerity of action, thought, and

word is a most desirable trait on theart of anyone. Sincerity is closely re-ated to truth, although there may be

times when, in a desire to be kind orto work for the highest good of anotherindividual, the truth may be slightlymodified. All in all, a sincere effort onthe part of anyone in his dealings withother people is a reflection of truth andof a desire to conform whatever a per-

son might do to the best interests ofthe other.

Sincerity is most necessary in thelife of each of us if the future is toorganize itself properly. Insincerity

 builds up repercussions in the future, just as lack of truth adds more andmore to untruthfulness. A small error,or what we might call a white lie, sometimes can stand on its own as long asother circumstances do not requireanother untruth to come into existenceto carry out the consequences of thefirst. Consequently, anything which is based upon a series of falsehoods, or alack of sincerity, develops problems inthe future that in time will have to beadjusted.

The state of insincerity on the partof individuals and nations is the ground,then, for many misunderstandings.When any individual, or group of individuals, reserves a part of the truth orholds back the real desire to work forthe true benefit of others, the foundation is laid for trouble, friction, and adefeat of the higher purposes whichmankind is supposedly trying to achieve.Certainly in our political and economicschemes today there have been evidences of the suppression of true sincerity upon the part of the individual

who is acting supposedly for the welfare of others, and, in so doing, the consequences have led to many problems.If sincerity could today be the practiceof all individuals and all nations, manyof our attempts toward the improvement of the quality of our civilizationand the betterment of all men wouldtruly be well established and on theirway to a successful culmination.

A lack of sincerity is based uponselfishness. When an individual ismore desirous of achieving his own endsrather than ends which will benefit

others as well as himself, he is evidencing a human trait of acquisition and adesire for self gain, regardless of theconsequences to others. A truly sincereindividual is not inclined to put his ownselfish wishes first, but nevertheless,true evidence of sincerity does not meanthat we have to make our own wishesand desires secondary to those of allother persons. In the case of a dispute

 between two individuals, there can bea fundamental difference of opinion as

to the nature of a satisfactory solutionof the points of disagreement. If thesetwo individuals will not withhold factsand will act in complete sincerity, thedifferences can be more easily resolved

in the end. The result so achieved will be more permanent than if throughlack of sincerity each makes statementsor performs acts which do not cover theentire meaning or intent of his purpose.Much suspicion that exists between nations is not for the reason that theirmisunderstandings cannot be solved, but merely because one or the otheris not acting in complete sincerity; thatis, they are withholding a part of their

 purpose or methods.

It is very difficult to formulate amethod by which we can achieve sin

cerity as a part of the individual character. It is true tha t education startingwith the very young will help inachieving a concept upon the part ofeach individual that sincere action is to be desired, but sincerity is closer related to certain moral values, all ofwhich are difficult to achieve unless astigma is attached. All moral conceptsof man are usually backed by one kindor another of enforcement in the formof social disgrace or punishment as aresult of violation. In other words, nocivilized person will deny the value ofcertain moral practices, but that sameindividual may violate those moralstandards if he thinks there is a chanceof not being caught. The pe tty thiefmay not be a criminal, but he is gam bling that he may be able to violatecertain moral standards without beingfound out by those who support suchstandards. This is an odd type ofthing; probably there are many who setout to violate certain laws or customswith the firm idea in their minds thatno one other than themselves should

violate these laws or customs. Oddlyenough, there are some criminals that profess a high standard of moral value.As long as punishment or suspicionmust be the background of morals, theywill continue to be violated.

In the past, religion has had a stronginfluence over the maintenance ofmoral standards. Most religions havetied themselves closely to prevailingmoral values, the violation of whichwill not only lead to repercussions for

the breaking of man’s laws, but may bring down the wrath of God and causeman to be assigned to eternal punishment. Individuals completely dominated and swayed by such a religious principle will be hesitant to violate

standards erected for the preservationof moral values. However, those whodo not conform to certain religiousstandards face little else than man’sown laws to punish any deviation fromthe straight and narrow path. A trueeducation for instilling moral value inman must make these principles a truevalue. A society must show that therecognition of such standard is truly to

 be desired, and those who conform arethose who prosper and benefit by theiractions.

Underlying many of these moral

 principles is the need of evidence of 

sincerity which will be the basis of understanding between men. The sincereman does not necessarily subject himself to the thoughts and control ofothers. He is obvious in his desire, as ex pressed by words and actions, simply toshow that he has nothing to hide—thathis life is open. To the sincere man thewords of his mouth are truly thethoughts of his heart. He expresses histrue feelings and his ideals; his moralvalues are a part of him and are nothidden in his expression. Such a spontaneous expression of our true beingwill lead to the elimination of the basisof misunderstanding which develops between human beings, and will contribute to courtesy, tolerance, and goodwill; all of which will, in turn, build

up a more stable future.

never be reached. We shall have failedin our mission. Hence the need of thelast two wars. We of today had to remove from our path those nations whowould have thwarted our efforts to ap

 ply science beneficially.This having been accomplished, ourcivilization after a lapse of time, probably a long time, will, like its predecessors, decline and pass away. As theHindu trinity reminds us, all mundanethings, even civilizations and solar systems, have a beginning; they have duration and they come to an end.

But look eastward. Though stars arefalling in the west, they are ascendingin the east. There are those also await

ing their turn to enter our firmament.These unrisen stars are the as yet un born nations.

This cavalcade of successive civilizations is a sta irway from earth to heaven.

 June  Greece. From the imperialism of the1946   Ceesars to world democracy.

What will be the gift of those as yetunrisen stars, those civilizations as yetunborn who, in their turn, will spreadtheir glory among earth’s sons anddaughters? What boon will they confer

on mankind? Will telepathy and clairvoyance render the telephone and television as obsolete as the weapons withwhich Caesar conquered Gaul? Will pain pass away? Will the vigor ofyouth continue into the advancing yearsof life? Is it possible that the last enemy to be overcome will be death? Nothing is too good for him who has beencreated in God’s own image.

Then indeed the steps of civilizationwill have reached to heaven. And lo!

among the ascending hosts are pagansand Christians, heretics, and true believers. There also are the unrighteousas well as the righteous, those who slayas well as those who have mercy. Aswe wonder we are reminded of thewords of the great avatar Krishna,speaking as the mouthpiece of the Cosmic ruler, “Upon whatsoever roads mencome to me on that road I welcomethem for all roads are mine.”
