A s e r i e s of wide steps de

scends from the Benaresside of the Ganges intothe river. These are thefamous bathing and burning or cremation ghats ofBenares. As we movedalong the river’s edge,filming the picturesque

skyline, we observed a number offunerals and cremations under way.On the lower platform of the steps, attendants had already erected a funeral

pyre consisting of short lengths of wood.Those whose means make it possible purchase for this purpose a certainwood which is fragrant when burned.The processional to the particular ghatwhich we were observing, had begun.

wound closely about it, showing itscontours. It was strapped on a stretcherof bamboo poles and carried by six men,three on each side. About the corpsewere entwined golden flowers whichindicated that it was that of a high-caste person. The pallbearers carriedthe body to the murky waters of theGanges and let it lie there a few minutes partly submerged. This is a formof sacerdotal immersion in the holywaters. The family and friends simultaneously began to chant. The menand women separated into two groupson either side of the wide steps of theghat. The body was then laid on top

of the funeral pyre which is about chestheight.

The nearest of kin, which in this particular instance was the widow, wasattired in a simple white sari. She wasinstructed by the attendant to ignite the pyre. This igniting is a rite in itself.The attendant gave her three long reedlike tapers which were already burningat the end. Slowly and with great dignity, she walked thrice about the pyre,the third time igniting the extremecomers of it. Then she gave the tapers back to the attendant ana gracefully retired up the steps, not once again looking behind, and masterfully concealingher grief. The whole company fell in behind her, chanting as they departed.

All along the area were bodies invarious stages of cremation. At first the blunt reality of the disintegration of the body by this means of disposal is rathe rshocking to the Occidental. With thefull understanding of the desire to re

turn the ashes to the Ganges, wherethey may be borne to the sea with theother elements, the act loses its awesome aspects. The realities of birth,life, and death are frankly met by theIndian. They are not submerged beneath mawkish sentimentality as is sooften done in the Occident.

The poorer classes, or those whose bodies have been shipped to Benares forcremation, have no friends attending.The attendants observe the ritual—aswould any undertaker—in a completelyimpersonal manner. The body is sub

merged while they prepare the funeral pyre. As they do so, the sacred Brahman cow may gingerly step down tothe body, snatch a garland of flowersfrom atop the corpse and benignlymunch them. If the attendant observes

this, he may gently ward off the cow.If he is busy, he pays no attention.As we journeyed down the river

again, we observed an ill and feeble oldman seated on one side of the steps ofthe ghat, with the water of the Gangeslapping over his ankles. Two youngermen were seated on either side of him, busily placing garlands of golden flowers about his neck and supporting himas they did so. His head bobbed backand forth and his ashen face was visibleas we drifted close by. We commented

that he was evidently quite ill. Ourinterpreter laconically said, “Not ill,dead.” He had just died. Rigor mortishad not yet set in. He was a priest, a

Brahman. They are not cremated asthose of other castes, but are adornedwith flowers. Then they are strappedto a bamboo raft and just floated downstream. The body gradually disintegrates and, of course, is probably partially devoured by scavenger birds enroute—a further pollution of the watersof the Ganges at this point in its course.

The return from the Ganges was stillanother ordeal. We had to penetratethe wall of pilgrims which had increased with the passing of the hours.One sight deeply moved me. On theend of an abutment over the water sata Brahman priest. He had entered intoa meditative state. He was seated cross-legged on a small rug which he hadapparently brought for the occasion.His long black hair was done up in aknot piled high on the top of his head.He was naked except for a loin cloth,

and his body glistened in the sun. Openon his lap was a large book, perhapscontaining the Brahmanas or the sacredUpanishads. The rays of the sun beating down on his exposed head, the flies,the raucous cries of the teeming humanity about him, swimming and bathing within arm’s length or goingthrough their ablutions—to all of thesehe was oblivious. He stared with wideunseeing eyes out upon the waters ofthe Ganges. His countenance, however,was one of absolute serenity. There was

no evidence of a trancelike staterigidity of muscles. We were in world of objectivity but he was inother, wholly within the consciousof self.

In contrast to the noble concepthis Brahman priest, who sought eswithin the realm of mind, was the ptice of an ascetic , whom we saw asreturned. He was in a cavity unneath the end of the ghat where

marks. His body gave the appearanceof being emaciated, so unlike the Brahman priest we had seen a few minutesbefore.

As an ascetic, he was practicing selfmortification —a form of abuse of thebody to indicate disdain for it and temporal existence. His was a pervertedconcept of an approach to spirituality.Unless we think too harshly of his kind,let us recall some of the Christian sectswho resort to flagellations and othertorture of the body to simulate the suffering of Christ during the crucifixion.These Christian sects imagine that suchpractices further salvation. Like someshy animal in its lair, the ascetic couldnot be called out for conversation or forphotographs. But at least he displayedan independence and the sincerity ofhis convictions.

This day was like a dream—experience upon experience crowded into ourconsciousness with great emphasis. Eccentrics of all kinds gave vent to theirconceptions and obsessions upon this religious holiday. Psychologically, manywere exhibitionists , having no definitereligious practice but taking advantageof prevailing circumstances to draw attention to themselves by extremes ofconduct. I recall being nudged in themiddle of my back as I moved throughthe throng. This was repeated a number of times. Finally, feeling annoyed,I turned to see the cause of it. I wasconfronted by a grinning young man inrags who proffered his hands for coins.About his neck and shoulders he hadentwined a python, perhaps twelve orfifteen feet in length. He had taken thehuge head of the reptile and had continually poked me with it to attract myattention.

The moment we stopped, mendicantsswarmed about us, asking for coins invarious dialects which we could notunderstand. Their gestures, however,were quite comprehensible. We madethe mistake, we learned, of giving thema few coins which resulted in a nearriot as they fought to recover themfrom each other and from the thickdust into which the coins fell.

It might be asked, How can themajority of these people be so indif

ferent to what seem the basic requirements of Western living? Birth , deaths immortality , the so-called mysteries oflife, are far more important to these

people than existence here and now.According to their conception, a singlelife means nothing. The sacrifice ofhealth, comfort, or life itself in thismortal span is of no consequence if itis necessary for spiritual conformity.All behavior, all experience is to bemeasured by the Divine Reality whichis subjectively realized. The Upani-shads perhaps sum up this understanding in the statement: “What is that byknowing which everything in this universe is known?” The answer is said to be found in the concept of God andBrahma.

We must remember that the endwhich the East seeks is to be obtainedquite differently from that of the West.The Occident is positive, aggressive, dynamic. We of the West attempt mastership by physical and intellectual force.We wrestle with existence as though itwere an opponent desirous of conquering us. Further, we presume to knowthe order which is conceived as theCosmic ideal, and we try to make allthe realities of our objective existenceconform to this ideal.

The East has a passive attitude toward mortal existence. It seeks to avoidconflict with life and thus not experience perturbation. To the Hindu thefinal order is in the universe itself, notto be set up as an idealism within man’sown mind. Consequently, it is necessary that one be drawn into the wholeof the universe to experience it. Thisoneness is expressed as “from whomindeed these beings are born, throughwhom they live, and unto whom theyreturn and merge in.” The Hindu insists that men should not presume toknow the ultimate but to go beyond therealm of thought, for Brahma or God isabove mind. The Westerner calls thisescapism. Plowever, the Western “mastery” of life brings as much misfortuneas it does peace of mind and in the end,as individuals, are we any happier?

One Eastern sage has said of theWest that we try to “reduce all thingsto a machine.” It is true that psychologists and psychiatrists are now endeavoring to mechanize even the mind,

that is, reduce it purely to the functioning of a mechanism. Each emotion orthought is tied fast to some externalstimulus or inherited biological one.Pure individualism and self-motivationare gradually becoming lost. Even ourWestern educators decry the fact thatmodern man finds it increasingly im possible to sit alone and think. He hasto be activated by the condensation ofnews articles and opinions of others—

or even by pictures in popular mzines or by radio commentators.

If the East and West in their philo phies could truly meet, this wouldmost beneficial to both. As it is, tare each functioning at extreme enthe East has its subjective worldworld of nonreality; the West hasobjective world of ever-increasing rety, and a materialism that enslathe spirit.

Our New Supreme Temple By T h e I m p e r ato r

h e a c t i v i t i e s of the Rosi-crucian Order, AMORC,though quite different in

purpose and fu n c tio nfrom commerce andtrade, are nevertheless affected by economic cycles.When men are economically depressed, they are

compelled to limit even their mostaltruistic activities. Conversely, whenmen are in a cycle of prosperity, theyhave the means of furthering theirideals.

When the first Supreme Temple waserected in San Jose in the year 1928,for economic reasons it was locatedabove the first unit of the Administration building. It was not within themeans of the Order at that time to purchase separate property on which toerect a temple. Consequently, thetemple was even then limited in its pro

portions. Some changes in customary

facilities had to be made. One of theantechambers, which tradition calls for,had to be sacrificed. With the growth ofthe membership and the ever-increasing number of candidates for initiation,the need of this chamber and of otherancillary rooms became quite pressing.

The late Imperator, Dr. H. SpencerLewis, had foreseen the need of a largerSupreme Temple before his transitionon August 2, 1939. He desired to designand direct the construction of such a building, as he had done formerly, at

such a time as the financial status ofthe Order would make it possible. With

the uprise in general conditions, theBoard of Directors of the SupremeGrand Lodge, being conscious of theneed of a new Supreme Temple and ofDr. H. Spencer Lewis’s wishes in thisregard, decided in favor of such a plan.

A new Supreme Temple, it wasrealized, must incorporate the traditional design—that is, Egyptian architecture and the symbolic arrangementof the lodge rooms—and at the sametime meet present demands for largeraccommodations and greater comfort.After many preliminary sketches, a request was made of Mr. Earle C. Lewis,architectural designer, to execute thefinal structural and architectural drawings for such a temple. Mr. Lewis wasthen associated with a local construction company. Mr. Lewis was likewiserequested to prepare and design allnecessary interior fixtures, such aslighting, furniture, and so forth, and tosupervise colors and the like.

In the interim, the means of financing such a project had to be considered.World War II had not yet ended. The

price of building materials was inflated,as well as the cost of labor. Government restrictions made it impossible to begin actual construction. It was, however, thought to be the propitious timeto accumulate funds for the eventual

building. A special booklet, unique andattractive in design and presenting the plan for the new Supreme Temple, wasdisseminated to the whole membership

of the Rosicrucian jurisdiction in theyear 1945. The booklet solicited contri-

butions from the members for this im portant edifice. It likewise promisedthat everyone so contributing would receive a certificate acknowledging hisgenerosity. Further, each contributorwas given a coupon to sign and returnto the Supreme Grand Lodge. Assurance was given that such coupons would

be deposited beneath a bronze plaqueon the occasion of the dedication of theSupreme Temple and that these cou

pons would remain there in perpetuity.C o n » t r u c t i o n

The actual construction was delayedfor three years, waiting for improvement in building materials and the possible substantial lowering of costs. Final

ly, the Supreme Council of AMORCauthorized the letting of contracts.Messrs. B. and C. Toney were awardedthe general contract on a cost basiswith a nominal profit to the builders.The air-conditioning and heating contract was awarded to the Harry M.Barnes Company.

On August 20, 1948, the Imperatorturned the first shovelful of soil on thesite of the new Temple, while otherofficers of the Supreme and GrandLodges witnessed the event.

The temple building is two-storied, is180 feet in length and 55 feet in width.Its design is after two of the ancienttemples of Egypt. The exterior is areproduction of the Temple of Dendera,in which one of the great mysteryschools of antiquity was established.The interior is a reproduction of the

Erocessional temple of Medinet Habu,aving a central court open to the sky

and roofed colonnades flanking twosides. The columns of the inner templeare of the papyrus-reed type with lotus- bud capitals.

The walls of the temple are ornamented, as in antiquity, with exquisitemurals in several colors designed afterthose in the Book of the Dead and de picting as well authentic scenes of thelife, customs, and mythology of ancientEgypt. Mrs. Diana Bovee Salyer, former staff artist of the Los AngelesCounty Museum, and a member of theRosicrucian Order, was selected todirect the staff of artists in this project.

tion, she consulted with Mr. ELewis and then she and her worked on the scaling of the origdesigns to the proper proportion

preparation for the final ornamentaof the temple.

The first floor of the temple buildin addition to the large lodge rowhich is 90 feet in length and c

pletely tiled throughout, contains ancillary or initiation rooms anspacious lounge with soft lighting.the second floor is a large recrearoom, classroom, the Martinist Temand a fully-equipped kitchen. Bwindowless, the building is air-cotioned throughout.

Nearly eleven months later, on SunJuly 17, 1949, at eleven o’clock, aPacific standard time, the new SuprTemple was dedicated. On that osion even nature displayed her mfavorable mood, for tne day was liant but not excessively warm. M

atterned after the ones described inhe Corpus Hermeticus and in the recrds of the Rosicrucian archives as well.

At his signal, the processional of offiers, numbering over fifty, entered inull and colorful regalia, led by torch-earers carrying lighted torches. The

whole company of officers was chantingAd Rosam per Crucem” as it entered.lowly they proceeded down the northnd south sides of the temple, the twones walking abreast of each other. Inccordance with the cosmological theme

—that is, the ontological conception ofhe universe—each of the four primallements, fire, air, water, and earth,

were consecrated and their esotericmeaning explained. For the occasionacred waters from the Nile, Ganges,nd Indus rivers were brought fromhose remote places to be used in theroper consecration of the temple. Theymbolism of the stations or the orienation of the temple was related byach of the officers assigned to suchtations.

The Colombes in their ritualisticwhite robes, emblematic of their office,ntered in a processional to the She-inah. Several of their number ascendedeparately to the Shekinah platformnd then placed on the altar a sacredccouterment which had been removedrom the former temple, such as theandlesticks and the golden orb. Thisepicted the continuation, the immorality of the spirit and soul of the oldemple. The remaining Colombes, indiidually, placed rose petals in theolden orb on the Shekinah to depicthe intangible elements, those thingsot made of wood, stone, or any otherubstance, which make up the soul ofhe Supreme Temple. As these wereeposited, the Chaplain told the naturef each of these elements as, for exmple, sincerity, loyalty, compassion,nd so forth.

The final act was the consecration ofhe temple by invoking the Divine

Mind at the fifth point of the lodge,amely, the Shekinah. The Imperator,ollowed by the Supreme Colombe, aproached the Shekinah. Ascending tohe altar, he requested all to aid inallowing the premises by a concentra

tion of their higher selves, to the Shekinah as a focal point. To assist inmaking the Shekinah the focus fortheir thoughts, he directed that theSupreme Colombe light a single taperupon the altar. The Imperator thencommented that it was most appropriatetha t the invocation or blessing upon thisoccasion—that is, the calling forth ofthe Cosmic power—be by the late Im

perator, Dr. H. Spencer Lewis. A recording of Dr. Lewis’s voice, which had been made years before, giving theinvocation, was then reproduced. Following the invocation and while thelighted taper was on the altar, with themembers directing their thoughts inthat direction, from out of the seemingspace of the temple came the softstrains of Ah, Sweet Myster y of Life.

Upon returning to the East from theShekinah, the Imperator called uponthe supreme secretary, Frater CecilPoole, to address the assembly. Frate rPoole acknowledged the contributionsof the fratres and sorores throughoutthe world. To comply with the promiseof the Order, he then requested thegrand secretary, Harvey Miles, and the

grand treasurer, James R. Whitcomb,to bring to the Shekinah the old chestof the late Imperator, Dr. H. SpencerLewis, with its symbolic designs, inwhich were all the coupons signed bydonors. These coupons were then ceremoniously deposited in the platform ofthe Shekinah. They were sealed withinit for posterity, by the adjusting of a bronze plate atop the aperture. This plate carries a memorial tribute to thefratres and sorores for their kind aid.

The supreme secretary then invitedthe grand master, Frater Rodman R.Clayson, to the East to address theassembly. Frater Clayson acknowledgedthe many kind services of fratres andsorores who had assisted in the final

preparation of the temple by the givingof their skill and labor. Most of thesemembers served without remunerationand those who were on the staff served

beyond the hours for which they werecompensated. Frater Clayson likewise

paid tribu te to Mr. Earle C. Lewis forhis architectural designs and to thestaff artist, Mrs. Diana Bovee Salyer,and her assistants, and also to Frater

It c a n n o t be deniedthat a good psychiatrist must possess uni

versal erudition of asort which necessarilyincludes extraordinaryknowledge in mystic

t radi t ion . He mustneeds be well versedin every ramificationof practical psychology, both trad it ion aland modern. A powerful will, an enlightened intellect, utmostsensitivity and esotericwisdom should be hisown to cope with com plicated cases. He must be able to heal notonly phenomenally but finally. And atlast, no atom of prejudice should dwell in him who is totravel through the horror-ridden abyssesof another man’s Amenti, or subconscious realm.

Now, dismissing preliminaries, itseems evident that a good part of mental disorders may be traced back toacquired injuries, heredity, excesses;and even physical causes cannot beignored. However, the explanation ofmost cases is impossible solely by these

and a satisfactory treatment throughthem is not achievable. It is equallytrue that the medicinal treatment ofmental diseases is very much short-ranged. We can at best regulate inception of phenomena by it, but the ultimate elimination of the evil may bereached only in superficial or easy cases.

A treatment of the complex casesdemands quite other methods and arather unorthodox therapy on the partof the alienist. One who intends to bethe savior of living corpses in asylumsfor the insane must be a chemist, an

internal specialist, aneurologist, psychoanalyst, yoga practitioner, hypnotist, sym-

bologist, astrologer, alchemist, magician, andhistorian, all in one

person. One whose intellect is bound up andnot synthetic, who isdominated by different dogmas, religiousor scientific, whosesexual life is chaotica n d u n b a l a n c e d ,should never enter the

path of the weird em pire, where every caseis divergent from the

previous and w herethe guardians of darkness gorge on theweak.

An adept psychiatrist should knowman’s Cosmic essence, its connectionswith the Universe, the threefold natureof everything, in order to be able toexpound the secret of the macrocosm ofthe microcosm—and to feel out analogies in man and the Cosmos, for theCosmic principle inherent in man iseverlasting. Around the seed of hisessence, matter condenses, whirls, realizes or releases so that the idiogenetic

kernel can produce always new variations from out the potentials of lifeand death, from light and darkness.This immortal kernel is not identicalwith the ego, the mortal personality,which during the journey of life withina terrestrial period, as through thecourse of racial incarnations, changesand transmutes itself.

The overself in our mental organization is that part which carries insideitself the history of the whole Cosmos.A real physician of the soul must delve back into this point, if he wants to

touch the levers of all hidden forces inthe make-up of his patient. Here alonecan he get acquainted with the mystical names of the demons which keephis subject obsessed. The deep sea ofman’s primeval Cosmic experience isan immense one. The human bodyholds in every one of its cells events ofmillions of years, containing, besides individual engrams, the universal knowledge since the time of the spiritualforce’s entering into matter. Terrible

fossilia lie hidden in it; antedated cataclysms, individual and collective memories of the past bequeath themselveswith the matter received from our parents. A great biologist once said“matter is the memory of the universe,”

and he was right.The incalculable variations of life’s planes—and we have no suitable wordsfor them—can be expressed only bythe symbolic language of prehistoricmyths or by hieroglyphics of a higherinspired vision. Indeed, if we realizeeven a small part of the invisible matter which revolves, pulsates, rebels,threatens, inspires, exalts, shoots darkideas, fosters cancerous tissues of antisocial instincts in the unconscious andabove it, we begin to understand thescope of the gigantic task that a psychiatrist must tackle in order to heal.

If a psychiatrist opens the doors ofHades without the profoundest erudition about the nature of the energeticconfigurations likely to be met there,he only increases the number of leaksthrough which the deluge of the netherworld will inundate the surface of ourworld. One thing is sure: he would notheal but destroy. A psychiatrist woulddo no good for a patient by releasinginhibitions and setting up no insulatoryconcepts.

Of course, psychoanalysis of theFreudian sort has its drawbacks, too.Suppressed sexual desire and a re pressed domination instinct in a collision with a moral ego may be thecause of diseases or tragedies ending in nervous breakdown. On the whole,however, they cannot explain life. Veryoften, by displacing the shackles of passions in our soul, we bring about a

cells. This is the container of racialcomplexes, of evolution and the phylogenetic past.

12. Man’s Cosmic being has a moral

significance. The aim of life lies in thedevelopment of certain ethical and psychical qualities. Mental diseases aresuch functions, or biotic forms, throughwhich there is the attempt to attain thedesired attributes within the shortesttime.

This last, or 12th, item of the axiomsgives the secret key to mental diseases.To make matters more comprehensible,we shall have to go into detail aboutthe real nature of inhibitions, the partthey play in the evolution and forma

tion of the human soul.Psychiatry could very well be namedthe science of inhibitions. If we studythe history of man’s psyche, considering all the features which distinguishmen on a higher social and spirituallevel from primitive tribesmen, wemust find that the difference betweenthem lies at first in the quantity andquality of their limiting concepts. Themoral ego of a cultured intellect is com plex, originating from the refining filtration of inhibitory series.

In mental disorders, a part of thesecomplexes are out of order or quiteundeveloped, and at the same time acompensation group of ideas is pathologically strengthened. The seat of pathologic factors may be in any of thethree higher vehicles. Pleasant or un pleasant experiences of previous incarnations remain fixed in latent form andin special cases cause strong tension.They break through the threshold ofconsciousness at the provocation of external circumstances. It is evident that

a successful treatment of these curiousexamples is only possible on their own plane of existence. To eveiy one of thesuperorgans a different sort of treatment answers or corresponds.

T h r e e T h e r a p i e s

The pathologic forms may be classified into three groups. The categoriesand teachings of psychiatry up to noware made illusory by the evolution ofindividual psychology, so we should tryto set up new ones.

The first group of psychopathologic forms consists of cases of physical in

juries and aberrations. These are treatedon the physical plane with the aid ofchemicals, operations, and technical ex pedients. These may be effectuated by

any well-versed doctor.The second group of pathologic forms corresponding with the astral plane israther complicated and contains mysterious cases, beginning with plainneuroses and continuing to the darkestdescriptions of mental diseases. Herewe already meet with examples ofastral traumas or injuries of the astral body and mental osmosis of experiencesand personifications of another incarnation. This latter might perhaps be better compared to the interference of

unwanted radio stations because of aninefficient receiving set. Many formsdealt with later in a special part, likethat of the nervous disorders, agora

phobia, [fear of open spaces] fear offire, fear of knives, of blood, water,animals, and so on, have their originin incarnations of the transcendental past. The patient is tormented and heldcaptive in the prison of his former life.Such a patient is constantly infested bycenters of sick memory in the state ofdecomposition pouring from the astral

plane.These cases need the presence of an

occult psychiatrist, experienced in incarnation horoscopy, esoteric symbology,and hypnosuggestive science; or, inother words, they necessitate an adept physician. This extraordinary diagnostician must, first of all, decipher thethreefold hieroglyphics of his patient.Man is a living symbol. His words mayguise many things, but the constitution,cranium, physiognomy, lines, writing,complexion, voice, gesture, hand, anddate of birth betray all secrets of hismental frame to one who can solve themeaning of these threefold emblems.Therefore, symbology is a basic pillarof esoteric psychiatry, just as indispensable helpers are astrology, astronomy,and astrosophy [wisdom of the stars].These faculties constitute an integralwhole as the analogy of the three planeswithin man.

A horoscope cast for a single life isinsufficient to state an astropsychologicdiagnosis, because, as we mentioned before, man’s life did not staxt with birthon the physical plane. In the cells of

his organism and in his soul and spirit,he guards timeless memories. Inhibitions or phobias very often have theirroots in the transcendental strata ofabysmal depths. Thus we must set upan incarnation horoscope after Hinduor Tibetan pattern, in order to gatherinformation about the focal point of theillness of our patients.

After a profound astromental definition of the subject, which unavoidablycovers all details of personal weaknesses, virtues, energetic components,inflamed parts, mental ulcers, and passions, we can begin a careful treatment.The success of this depends to a highdegree on the patient’s moral characterand intelligence, on how far he is capa

ble of accepting a new point of view

which is likely to release his namelessfears and anxieties. As long as the physician of the soul cannot give transcendental sight or Cosmic consciousness to his patient , he only applies phenomenal treatment, represses but leaves completely untouched the real pathogenetic cause.

During the course of treatment nota single symptom should crop up, themeaning of which would be doubtful tothe adept giving treatment. One weak point would be more than enough to

refute his entire system of healing. Thedescension to the nether world of theunconscious ego was always a greatoriginal mystery. The neophyte wasalways accompanied by his master whoknew every turning point of the depthsand was in possession of the magicnames of the obsessions ruling in therealm of Hades. Man can gain a whiphand over his obsessions if he concentrates, invokes, and illuminates them,

probing into the secret of their being.This is the essence of the releasing

mantra whereby distorted catabolismsmay be annihilated. All religions contain legends, speaking about the descension of gods, goddesses, messiahsand saints into the nether world, afterwhich the reascending one emerges inan elucidated splendor to the surface ofour objective world. Down, below the

‘I am alone,’ you are before the eyes ofthe Higher Self, a silent spectator ofall your deeds.” Manifestations of theGreat Initiated ones all allude to thecommon point that the evolution ofsoul depends on the verdict brought inby oneself. Man’s divine self has, initself, the indwelling judges ruling overkarma. Our unconscious ego containsheaven and hell just as it comprises amanifested and unmanifested God.

This Cosmic Arbiter regards as sins the trespassing on higher moral and mental principles by deeds which in a sinister way debilitate man's connection with the community. The CosmicJudge determines what sort of failuresshould be repaired, or what kind of infirmities, such as voluptuousness, thedesire for power, and haughtiness.These may lead to distorted fixed ideas.In the pools of fixed ideas, powerful, primitive energies find their channels and, in the end, can be directed to act as sublimating catabolisms.T h e H i g h e r S e n s e B e h i n d I n h i b i t i o n s

Man’s evolution is only possible bythe innervation of always new inhibitions. However, in the course of emancipation, higher and higher complexesbecome rooted in the foreground of ourintellectual self. The more primitiveinstincts and atavistic energies at firstget forced behind the threshold of theconscious mind, often changing, evenwith a well-balanced individual, intopathogenous factors. The instinct ofdestruction, for instance, mingled witha special unsociable trend, may condense to an evil complex, leading to allsorts of confused states, and may produce neuroses.

In the case of similar disorders, it isabsolutely necessary that the physicianbe a master of symbolic yoga, as dealtwith in the chapter about descensioninto the nether world. Pathogeneticcomplexes may be solved by the moreintelligent patients themselves, withonly a little help on the part of theirphysician. This is the way of cosmo-psychoanalysis instead of mere psychoanalysis.

With less autonomic natures, on theother hand, where the intellect has not

an adequate integrity, this role is beingtaken over by the psychiatrist. As we

have already alluded to in the third paragraph of our axioms, mental functions—also unconscious ones—may be best expressed through symbolical alge bra. The figures, signs, and hieroglyphics of this symbolic algebra are knownsince prehistorical times, being archetypical in nature.

Our evolution under normal circumstances is based upon the domination ofsupreme complexes over primitive ones.Antisocial instincts are submitted to theguidance of higher ideas. If, however,the capability of constructive integration of our mind by some unknownreason is weakened, this regulation cannot be exercised any more, or must betransposed to another plane. But, constructive ideas on a different plane thantheir own become pathogenous factorsand an esoteric psychiatrist must endeavor to eliminate, dissect, or sublimate pathogenetic complexes.

In the therapy we mentioned before, our best method is the system of directed meditation. This connects the unconscious self of the patient with that of the psychiatrist following the path of microcosmic descension.

In this operation we need an armorof esoteric and scientific knowledgewhich is almost uncanny, because itrequires completely developed mysticaland magical faculties of the mind. Theknowledge must embrace a profoundunderstanding of psychic symbolism,especially those represented by Jung’sMandalas and yantras. On this topic,a very profound work had been produced by Jung, published in Zurich.The title of the book is Psychology and

Alc hemy.* It contains an exhaustinglyample collection of the most importantMandalas, ancient and also modem, thestudy of which we very warmly recommend to all earnest neophytes of future

Discovering New Worlds By D r. H. Spencer Lewis , F.R.C.

Since thousands of readers of the Rosicrucian Digest have not read many of theearlier articles of our late Imperator, Dr. H. Spencer Lewis, we adopted the editorial

policy of publishing each month one of his outstanding articles , so that his thoughtswould continue to reside within the pages of this publication.

M O N G T H E M A N Y historical events which havedistinguished the monthof October is one whichis celebrated in severalcountries and is knownin the United States as

Columbus Day. This anniversary falls on Oct. 12.The story of Columbus and his dis

coveries, as reported in the school histories and in the popular encyclopedias,is so erroneous in all important detailsthat were it not for its fairy-story nature, which appeals to the youthful andsatisfies adults’ longing for adventureand romance, it would have beenaltered long ago. For many years various uncovered records and historicaldocuments have pointed out the errorsin the popular account, but since thereis no commercial profit to be gained byrevising the story and discarding millions of dollars worth of books, thewhole fictitious story of the life anddeath of Columbus remains.

There is ample evidence in recordsstill preserved in Spain and Portugal,and in some museums throughout theworld, to prove that Columbus was nota poor man, nor a mere adventurerseeking only certain commercial ormercenary benefits for his people andothers. His name was not actually the

one that is attributed to him, nor whe of a family whose humble positin the world supported the other ements of the romance.

Columbus was the son of a man whad been knighted, whose heraldic arwere recorded in several countries, w

was learned and highly respected, awho held not only a high social posit but a very close contact with royaThe son, too, was knighted and herited the heraldic peerage of father. He was learned not only in art of navigation, but in many sciencand particularly in ancient sciences amystical arts.

It is generally overlooked by histcal writers that Columbus was author of a number of books on mycal philosophy, having naught to with navigation; these books are sin existence and preserved. Of imptance to us is the fact that he becaa knight of the Order of the Temple, affiliation of the Rosicrucian Brothhood, and like many other eminmystics and philosophers who had badmitted to the knighthood of the Te ple, he wrote and left as a heritagnumber of manuscripts in mysticalcipher. For over a century, researchhave been puzzled by the mystical e blems and signature which Colum

arily decide to make an adventure one seas for the purpose of finding a

horter and better means of internaonal trade, or for commercial purposesall. The records, which we have seen,

ainly indicate that he was selected bye Knights to carry out an ancient,ystical decree of tne brotherhood ofe Knights of the Temple, lookingward the establishment of a newrusalem in the Western world.

We have called attention to the factat it is untrue that the scientific menthe time of Columbus were unaware

f the earth’s true form, and that thecentive prompting Columbus to makevoyage into the “unknown seas” was

prove a particular theory of somend. There is evidence tha t even ine tenth century, Alcuin, the mystic

hilosopher and teacher, possessed aobe representing the form of the earthith continents marked upon it. Tration records how the mystics of Egyptso left evidence in the Great Pyramid

howing all the continents on the facef the earth as they now exist witharious signs and symbols allocated toem. At any rate, the writings ofolumbus reveal that he knew posively what he would find on the otherde of the Atlantic Ocean. His writgs prove, furthermore, that he concted the mainland of America long

efore the incident that is recorded ine popular histories. The letter andcord that he prepared for the Queen

f Spain were intended to satisfy theommercial and mercenary demands ofhe state and its people. The recordept by him, carefully signed andealed, revealed his other and earlierontacts with several points of theorth American continent, and the

urpose of them.But all of this is a story that will be

time is right. We have referred to ita number of times vaguely in order toestablish the fact that this knowledgeregarding the real explorations ofColumbus is known and has beenexamined.

As we have said, Columbus and thosewho fostered the original plan for his journeys sought to carry out an oldmystical decree to establish a newJerusalem in the Western world. Thishad nought to do with the Jerusalem ofPalestine, but it was in keeping withthe ideas promulgated several centurieslater by Sir Francis Bacon in his book,The New Atlantis. In fact, what Baconwrote was merely an extension of theoriginal plans which were familiar toColumbus, and many others; and whenthe Rosicrucians first came to Americain 1694, they carried out a second coming to America of the spirit of the newJerusalem.

As centuries have passed we havecome to learn what the mystics of antiquity always knew, that there is within man and within his consciousnessand within the reach of his psychicand physical faculties a greater worldfor exploration than this poor old earthhas reported to all of the venturesometravelers of the past. There are newworlds and greater worlds to exploreand to conquer, and most of these arein the heart and mind of man himself.Another greater world lies just aboveus in the Cosmic space. No dangerousadventures are necessary, nor is it required that huge ships or mechanical

birds of the air be employed for manto explore these greater worlds. Manhas as a birthright the ability to reachto the greatest heights and the greatestdepths, the inside and the outside of thewhole of the universe.

The richest rewards that have cometo mankind throughout all the ages ofcivilization have come as a result ofexplorations in the mental and spiritualworld of man as compared with all ofhis ventures in the material world. ber-delegates who gathered to attend the 1949Annual Rosicrucian Convention, August 14-19,ran questions such as:Where is the new Su

preme Temple building, and what is itlike? In the accumulating crowd onSunday, cameras were numerous—professional cameras and simple kodaks,many of them busy recording picturesof beautiful Rosicrucian Park and especially pictures of the newly completedTemple.

To the waiting members who hadassembled in Francis Bacon Auditoriumfor the opening features of the convention, Fra ter James French, of Minneapolis, grand councilor for the Midwestern States, acting as TemporaryChairman, called the convention toorder. He introduced the Imperator,Ralph M. Lewis, who welcomed theconventioners and spoke on the subject:“A M 0 R C — Past, Present, Future.”Showing the influence of Rosicrucianhistory in shaping our teachings, policies and thoughts, he traced our historythrough the period of traditions andlegends on down through recorded history. He spoke of the legend of Osirisand his murderous brother, Seth; of thestory of Ptah, the “architect of the universe”; and of the life and works ofAmenhotep IV.

The Imperator continued, speaking ofthe early labors of Dr. H. SpencerLewis; he related how Dr. Lewis hadworked alone at first, later engaging thehelp of Fraters Morphier, Kiimalehto,and others. From the first formal establishment of Rosicrucians in America,at New York City in 1915, the work ofthe Second Cycle of the Order’s activityin this country began, leading to the present development of the Order, the present Grand Lodge now located inSan Jose, California.

Following this address, the permanent Chairman of the convention, Dr.J. C. Guidero, of Los Angeles, California, took the gavel. Dr. Guidero haslong been a member of AMORC andwas, in fact, one of the original mem

bers of Hermes Lodge in Los Angeles.He welcomed the delegates and announced as his helper, Frater GeorgeFenzke, of Chicago, Illinois.

Continuing with the evening’s program, the Chairman introduced theofficers of the Order. Frater Cecil A.Poole, supreme secretary, greeted themembers and commented on the manylovely floral pieces appearing in theAuditorium and also in the lounge ofthe Supreme Temple—the gifts of individuals, lodges, and chapters throughout the world. These special tributesarrived to express pleasure in the com

pletion of the new building. Then followed the presentation of the othermembers of the Board of Directors, thegoverning body of the Order: Mrs. H.

Frater Rodman R. Clayson, grandmaster, was then introduced. He reminded the delegates to make the mostof their week at Rosicrucian Park andspoke of conventions as being greathome-comings, as well as occasions forasking questions relative to the Rosicrucian studies, for opportunities tohave interviews with the officers, andother privileges. Also, introduced wereFrater Harvey Miles, grand secretary,and Frater James R. Whitcomb, grandtreasurer.

Letters of greeting were received from:Soror Jeanne Guesdon, grand secretaryof the Grand Lodge of France; FraterJan Coops, grand master of the GrandLodge of the Netherlands; FraterEmanuel Cihlar, AMORC representative in Vienna, Austria; and from theIndonesian jurisdiction. Greetings in the form of cables arrived from theAlden Chapter in Caracas, Venezuela;from several members in Germany; theVancouver Lodge in British Columbia;from Frater G. A. Pardo, grand councilor for the Order in Central and SouthAmerica; from Frater Albin Roimer,grand master of Sweden, and from anumber of individual members both inAmerica and foreign lands—all attesting to the world-wide nature of theOrder.

Under the guidance of the instructors,special class groups met in the SupremeTemple and the Francis Bacon Auditorium, to listen to lectures and discussions pertaining to the teachings.Each day’s class discussion was devotedto the members of certain degrees ofattainment and included experimentsand open forum question periods. Similar class periods were held in theSpanish language by Frater J. A.Calcano, Director of the La tin-American Department of AMORC.

Many took advantage of the variouscience demonstrations given in thamphitheatre of the Rose-Croix Science building and the demonstrations andlectures in the Rosicrucian Planetariumconducted by Frater Floyd Newman

Drawing from the archives of theOrder such rare books as Sir WalteRaleigh’s History of the World (1614)Frater Joel Disher, of the Literary Research Department, explained their significance on several occasions whenmembers gathered in the RosicrucianResearch Library. On other occasionshe displayed and explained importandocuments and letters authenticatingthe Rosicrucian Order in America andits relation to the F.U.D.O.S.I. Otherofficial correspondence was also onexhibit.

Music lovers found several programand informal periods of musical entertainment. On Monday afternoon, FrateJohan Franco, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, presented an unusual program ovocal and recorded music composed bySaint-Germain, the result of FrateFranco’s personal discoveries and recordings. On Thursday evening, FrateJ. A. Calcano, gifted Venezuelan com- poser-conductor, and Director of theLatin-American Department, played ina piano concert, with his usual skillnumbers from Bach, Chopin, and De bussy. A member of the AmericanGuild of Organists, Frater Iru Price ofSan Jose, played a number of inspiringorgan selections. Two informal varietymusicales were held, including numberson the theramin by Soror WillamaryAszmann, accompanied by her motheon the Solovox; the eye-defying magicatricks of Frater Fred Forster, talentedinventor from Bridgeport, Connecticut

vocal solos by Frater Churchill Jacksonof San Jose, by Soror Caroline Pettiforof Saskatchewan, Canada, and byColombe Nancy Bissett, of Los Angelesa Chinese dance by Soror BarbaraReam, of San Jose, California, and othenumbers.

On Monday and then again on Friday, Frater Jay R. McCullough, Curator of the Rosicrucian Museum, addressed the members congregated in the

Museum. His first address, “EgyptianMystical Symbols,” featured the exhibitand explanation of symbols used in theancient mystery schools. These included the Ankh, or key of life, and theDed, or symbolic backbone of Osiris,which was raised by the priests at thetime of the dramatic portrayal of theresurrection of Orisis from the dead.In his Friday address, “The Journey ofthe Soul,” Frater McCullough explainedvarious conceptions man has held of hissoul’s journey through life, transition,and probable future existence. He commented briefly on various mystery-school ideas relative to the journey ofman’s soul from its pristine spiritual ordivine state down through matter, and

on his integration back into the divine.The purposes and services offered by

the Sunshine Circle, or AMORC welfare agencies, were explained by theirDirector, Frater J. Duane Freeman, inan address given in Francis BaconAuditorium on Thursday morning.Utilizing the Recreation Room on thesecond floor of the Supreme Temple

building on Thursday afternoon, FraterFreeman addressed members interestedin the activities of the Junior Order ofTorch Bearers, explaining their purpose

and that of the Rosicrucian Child Culture Institute. On several occasions,members gathered in the art room ofthe Science building to see exhibits ofthe work done by the Children’s Hour,a project designed to study the use ofeurythmics, voice expression, and colorappreciation in the training of smallchildren. The theme of this enterprise,self-realization and expression, was ex

plained in detail to the visitors by SororAlice Appell of San Jose.

Mindful of the interest of many mystical students in Rosicrucian methodsof healing, Dr. H. Arvis Talley, physician of the Rose-Croix TherapeuticResearch Institute, in his lecture, “TheRosicrucian Health Technique,” elaborated on healing methods and pointedout certain features of this work.

On Monday evening, Frater ErwinWatermeyer, of the AMORC TechnicalDepartment, addressed the members inthe Auditorium on the nature and useof color. He demonstrated the propagation of light waves, ocular spectrum,and the wave bands of color. With

prisms and other equipment he broughtout little-known facts about mixedcolors and their importance to mysticalstudents.

The “mystical allegory” of thisyear’s convention was entitled “TheEternal Rose,” and was presented byFrater Erwin Watermeyer on Tuesday,and Wednesday evenings. While notin the form of a play, it was an unusually beautiful and dramatic presentation of the mystical and occult elementsconcealed within the symbol of theHermetic Rosy Cross. The material wasgleaned from several sources and wasused in a new and unique art form developed by Frater Watermeyer himself,employing color, music and unusuallighting effects, as well as prose and poetry. Through these means, the occult and Rosicrucian principles were

presented in a manner which the audience found deeply moving.

Investigating and explaining themeaning of ritualism, the SupremeSecretary addressed the convention onTuesday evening. (A repetition of hisaddress was given on Wednesday evening for those members who had notheard the program on Tuesday.) Hetraced the roots of ritualism from itsorigin in the natural aptitude of manto express himself through dramatization and its symbolic meanings.

The grand master, Frater RodmanClayson, also addressed the delegateson Tuesday (and also on Wednesday)evening, on the subject: “Understanding the Rosicrucian.” He spoke of ourstriving to become able to reflect toothers inspiration, consolation, strengthof mind, and the desire to achievegreater accomplishments and higherideals; he further pointed out the needfor mystical students to be consistentand to create a clear and reasonableopinion of the Order in the minds ofstrangers.

On Wednesday afternoon, Frater JoelDisher lectured on the “Art of Living,”a summary of practical and happy living, explaining the tine source of thishappiness.

tions and the mystical principles involved in their creation and purpose.Giving words of encouragement to thosewho had not been satisfied with theirsuccess in certain fields of Rosicrucianendeavor, he proceeded to conduct a

series of experiments to demonstratethese physical and psychical laws. Theassembly took part in these revealingexperiments; they were aided by special backgrounds and cleverly maneuvered lighting equipment, and manywere highly impressed with the resultsof their concentration.

For the first time in our recent history, a general convocation was heldin the Spanish language. Frate r CecilA. Poole, supreme secretary, addressedthis conclave in the Spanish language.Frater Fernandez Bas, of the Havana,Cuba, Chapter rose to present to theImperator a particularly attractive,hand-tooled leather volume from theenthusiastic members of his chapter.The Imperator accepted this charming book, and found within it the autographs of every member of the HavanaChapter. He announced that henceforth, every member taking an initiation in the Spanish language would beasked also to autograph this book andstated how proud he was of the activi

ties in Havana and elsewhere throughout Latin America.

The hours of work on the part of thethirty or more members forming theofficial convention committees were indeed justified by their comprehensivereports read to the assembled delegatesat the final business meeting on Friday.In summarizing these reports, it ap pears that they found the financialaffairs of the Order—past, present, andfuture—in excellent condition. Afteran exhaustive investigation, includinga conference with the attorneys representing AMORC, they found thatAMORC is ably represented in the recent litigation The defendant (AMORC)

Honorary initiations into the Assoate Degree of the Traditional MartinOrder were given by the local chaptor heptad, during the afternoon. LiAMORC, the Martinist Order is affiated with the F.U.D.O.S.I., the federtion of authentic initiatic and esoterorders, and has its North and SouAmerican headquarters at RosicruciPark. A.M.O.R.C. Director Passes

Through Transition

O r l a n d o H u g h e s , member of the Board of Directors of theSupreme Grand Lodge, was raised to higher initiation at the ageof sixty-four years on Thursday, August 25, 1949. Frater Hugheswas suddenly stricken on the concluding day of the InternationalConvention for which he had labored to make it a success.

Becoming a Rosicrucian member in the year 1930, he ardentlydevoted himself to the studies of the Order. In his personal lifehe had applied the principles, which he had learned, to varioushumanitarian endeavors. His devotion and understanding of theRosicrucian philosophy resulted in his appointment as GrandCouncilor for the Midwest Section of the United States.

In 1945, Frater Hughes established residence in San Jose,California. He was further honored at the time by being electedto the Board of Directors of the Supreme Grand Lodge of theA.M.O.R.C. He likewise assumed the duties of Superintendent ofthe Buildings and Grounds at Rosicrucian Park. His efficiencywas evidenced in the excellent appearance of the physical properties of the A.M.O.R.C. His character was manifested in the respectand admiration shown him by his associates.

Frater Orlando Hughes was a retired United States Armycolonel. He served in the Philippines in his youth. He was acommissioned officer in the field artillery during World War I.In World War II, he was a member of a military court andengaged in secret service work. He leaves a wife, Yvonne, and adaughter, Mrs. Fred P. Hempler, both Rosicrucians, and a granddaughter.

Full Rosicrucian funeral rites were conducted for Frater Hughes by the ritualistic chaplain of the Grand Lodge of A.M.O.R.C.Many Rosicrucians in distant places paid their respects upon theoccasion of this, his Great Initiation.

We know that Egypt, which is saidto be the cradle of civilization, hadstately Temples of Learning as far backas 6,000 years ago. It seems that therehave always been enlightened minds torender guidance and instruction to the

eople. Without such guidance it isoubtful if mankind could have survived.

By following the march of civilization, we will discover that progress wasstimulated through the efforts of a fewhighly developed personalities whowere able to consider the welfare ofmen and women and to think far inadvance of their times. They may have

expressed their thoughts in wosculpture, painting, or architecture, they all seem to have been motiva by the same ideals. They did not stfor personal gain, but for the uplifhuman thought.

We have, in this world of ours,

forces at work, one opposed to the otOne is constructive; the other, desttive. This is acknowledged in all losophies and all religions. Both foaffect the destinies of mankind throleaders who exert great control: force raises, or builds; the other, destr

Much has been written about Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt the knowledge its builders possessedcertain laws. The structure of Great Pyramid brought to light forces of good. It is not definiknown who the builders of the GPyramid were or from whence tcame, nor is it known how the mendous masses of stone were raand fitted into place. Other pyramwere built as burial tombs, but Great Pyramid was a Temple of Leing. The Egyptians also built ostructures where knowledge was seminated. Tradition tells us that builders migrated to Egypt from a ctinent of highly advanced civilizatioa continent, now submerged, which known as Atlantis.

Some of the ancient Egyptian Temples of Learning were to be found atKarnak, Luxor, Dendera, MedinetHabu, and El Amama where Amen-hotep IV built his monumental Temple.Seekers from all lands were drawn toEgypt and prepared to return to theirlands as teachers. There is a traditionthat the founder of the Eleusinian mysteries was a high Egyptian priest andmystic. It is a well-known historical factthat the great philosophers of Greece visitedEgypt and came in

contact with the mystics there. The firstinstance that we haveof such a contact isthe visit to Egypt ofSolon, the Athenian.

With many subsequent conquests ofEgypt and the adventof Christianity, themystic colleges for themost part ceased toexist in Egypt. Theseco l l eges we re succeeded by the academies in Greece. Manyof their disciples became converted andtook up the task ofreconciling their philosophy to Christianity. With the spread ofC h r i s t i a n i t y t h eC h u r c h g r e w i nstrength and poweruntil it fell under the

leadership of men ofignorance, and thusChristianity was turned from a philosophy of life to a dogmatic religion. Themystics clashed with them and they,the mystics, were persecuted. Theirschools were destroyed and the worldwent on to what we call the Dark Ages.Oddly enough, the mystics eventuallyfound a way to bring the renaissanceto give to Western Europe the ideals ofthe old Masters again.

Today, among the organizations pro

pounding the truths of the ancients, wefind the Rosicrucians. The Rosicrucian

philosophy had its beginning in theEighteenth Egyptian Dynasty, and im petus was given to it by PharaohAmenhotep IV.

S y m b o l i s m

The new Rosicrucian Supreme Tem ple has been described in detail elsewhere in this magazine. It is noteworthy to point out, however, that itsinterior appointments and chambersconform to a principle of symbolism

which has been adhered to throughoutthe ages in all greatTemples of Learning.The initiate is led

through a chamber ofdarkness—darknesswhich represents ignorance, superstition, anda general lack of necessary knowledge—intoa great chamber representing light, illumi-n a t i o n , a n d n e wunderstanding. If we observe the exterior structurallines of some Egyptian Temples, pylons,and the new Rosicrucian Temple, wewill perceive that as the walls rise fromthe ground level they slant inward. Ifthe lines of slant of the walls were further projected upward, it would befound that at an arbitrary height theywould meet and form a pyramid witn.the Temple at its base. Is this purecoincidence? insignificant when compared to theexamples of complicated ailments entirely without anatomic or histologicchange in the brain or neural tissues.A much greater part of humanity suffers from such disorders than thosewho are attended in mental institutions.Paranoidal conceptions originating fromanxieties, difficult idiosyncrasies, schizo

phrenia, religious mania, hysteria, anddifferent phobias, do crouch under thethin membrane of our social morals.The treatment of such sickness, a releasing of the nervous spell, is not foundin the books of psychiatry. Most of thecontemporary physicians, and to someextent psychoanalyists of the old school,do not realize that a treatment abovethe physical plane is needed.

Even now, anybody who speaksabout supreme vehicles of the soul effective in higher dimensions or planes isregarded as a visionary, or at least aquack doctor. However, a new generation of physicians is coming up, and thediscoveries of Jung connected withatom physics cannot be disregarded anymore. This is the age of alchemy’s

justification. The equivalent of Hmetic chemistry or its rehabilitation psychiatry will not let us wait long a better therapy and diagnostics.

Four tasks of the adept physician aalready distinct:

1. A doctor adeptus of the soul mulead man to the sense of living and tunderstanding of his mental constution.

2. He must eliminate from his bacground the fear of death by lifting tveil that covers immortality of the so

JUDGMENT AND THE INNER SELF

u m a n judgment is a quality that can be madevaluable and at the sametime can cause much difficulty both for the individual who passes judgment and the one uponwhom it is passed. Our personal judgments are

usually a reflection primarily of ourown opinions and often directly reflectour prejudices. No form of human judgment is an absolute truth evenwhen it is freed from the prejudicesand viewpoints of the individual whodoes the judging. Our own personalconceptions affect our vision; everything upon which we pass judgment,or, in fact, upon which we merely look,is colored by our own vision. To set

these aside is as impossible as changinglong-established habits in the space ofa few moments.

Judgment therefore must be realizedas being influenced by our own conceptions, or experiences, and our knowledge. This cannot be changed, becauseman’s reason, through which judgmentis exercised, must be based upon whatman knows. Such a viewpoint does notmean that judgment is always unfair, but, realizing the limitations of our ownreason, we can become conscious of thenecessity of guidance in all phases ofour judging. Those who are called uponto give judgment in courts of law aretrained to realize that personal opinionsmust be made secondary to the factswhich are available to them. In thismanner an honest judgment is given,

by analyzing the merits of the case and passing judgment with as little personalopinion as possible.

Judgment on the part of most individuals, particularly when we judge

our fellow human beings, either forourselves or for someone else, is usually, and many times unfortunately, adecision made upon the spur of themoment. Such a form of judgment isless impartial than when based on reflection. It is the expression of a spontaneous opinion without taking intoconsideration all the facts. There is nouse to point out examples of how such judgment has wronged individuals so judged. Such forms of judgment arefrequently the basis upon which gossip

and rumors are started. A quick word passed upon a mere personal whim frequently can cause sorrow and sufferingto the individual who is concerned.More than that, and this is the im

portant factor realized by so few of us,wrong judgment reflects eventually,and in many cases, equally, upon theone who passes such judgment without proper foundation.

If we must be called upon, from timeto time, to pass judgment upon thethinking, concepts, or actions of anotherindividual, let us at least make a decision to be the basis of our own habits,that no judgment will be passed on tosomeone else without impartial consideration to the best of our ability.Better it is to say nothing than to judgewrongly. The man or woman who frequently judges someone else is the first

to demand the right to his or her o point of view. Often it happens that individual who is most fervent in manding his own personal rights athe right to express his own opiniforgets that that right in itself incluthe right of other people to also exprtheir opinions and points of view. demand the right of judgment andthe same time, to deny that rightsomeone else is an inconsistency whcan lead only to confusion and the lof organized and consistent thinkwithin the consciousness of the invidual who decides to judge in tmanner.

Objective judppnent based entirupon personal opinions and experienhas a tendency to deny expressionthe higher consciousness of our onature. The inner self, which we spof as inclusive of man’s consciousnand higher ideals, through exercise comes more evident and can be mfested as is the case with any othuman attribute. To be consistenready and willing to express and p judgment upon someone else with proper reflection is to, in a sense, cathe final consideration of conscience be so consistently put into the baground as to deny its expression a permit it to become secondary gradually cease to function as a contling and idealistic source. If we m judge, we must realize that the vhighest ideal of which we are capamust be our guide in such judgmeotherwise, we must remember the qtation: “Judge not lest ye be judge

Khunrath’s language is admittedlydifficult even to the reader of Latin, forhe wrote cryptically and in abbreviatedfashion, generously interlarding hisLatin with German, Greek, and He

Experience seesthis stone (heretofore prepared by somemen) as highly efficacious. The Popeof Rome and His Majesty the Emperorso regard it, as do many temporal kingsand some electors of the Roman Em pire, princes, counts, barons, nobles,and doctors—close associates of noblemen and men of high character andlearning; indeed, from every nation(Jewish, Gentile, Christian, and evenTurkish) and from widely differingstations and ranks everywhere, ecclesi

astics as well as statesmen, learned unlearned alike, astounded by the mcle of Nature worked in art, have swith their own eyes and touched wtheir own hands this stone. I kn

whereof I speak. I call all these mas witnesses. . . . Reason, true and certain, the faith

guide of the Sophists, confirms it. . The Sages, many and great, weig

authors—whose memorials concernthis matter are extant in many pla

—under most sacred oath have swto it unanimously, and not withgrounds. These men, learned and ghave always been truthful and shocontinue to be so regarded until sothing to the contrary is defini proved against them. The soul, which from an innate, fused-by-Himself desire, constantlytests that the philosopher’s stone isthe nature of things, or else to no p pose has God bestowed that burn

desire which to experience is to understand. Nothing is without purpose.

The agreement in nature of thisstone with the Holy Divine Tri-unity,

with the whole created Universe—yes,even with the Logos of God incarnateand the sacraments and mysteries ofthe Christian religion—compels men ofsane minds to believe and confess itto be true.

Finally, the Creator, wishing to beunderstood by things created, had the power and the benign will, as experience testifies, from the beginning of theworld to bestow bountifully the understanding of some portion of His planupon certain men (since He gives not

the whole to one alone) with the resultthat more abundantly and certainly thenature of God Himself has been broughtto the knowledge of the human race.Thus, from a realization of God gainedthrough the contemplation of His created world, man learns how to recognize more clearly the God Triune,author of great and good gifts, to reverence and worship Him, praise Himwith grateful spirit, meditate moredeeply and conjoin and reunite himselfwith Him. Just as it was the part ofGod, the most wise, to choose and finda way most convenient for asking obedience to Him, so it is ours to acknowledge, embrace and follow the way Hehas established.

Whatever the name by which it iscalled among the common crowd, blindof eye and deaf of ear, the stone isappropriately named, God Himself forcertain reasons handing it down in thewritings of the wise men and sternly

forbidding His priests to reveal it. Thus, philosophers have died ra ther than disclose it. The sign of God being sure(always has been and forever will be),this most secret mystery of science has

been as a thunderbolt of the wise to theunworthy and those envious of truemerit.

Nevertheless, I shall prevail uponthose speaking philosophically becausethey say the stone is creation and recreation also, from damp earth, sticky andluelike, and from dry earth, too, which

y its baking—which advances by

solidifying—into stone becomes everlastingly set and hardened.

Alphidius says: “If the stone had itsown right name, it would be stone.”

The others speak of it as “stone notstone.” As philosophers, they speak philosophically. Lest we encroach toonear and awake a divine force withwhich we cannot deal, let the answercome to the lofty mind capable of har boring it.

To philosophers, then, the stone ismost secret, neither unwise, demented,impious nor against sense. Moreover,it is capable of being understood. Becontent, therefore, with these axiomata,which, in a brotherly manner, I leave

you to consider: The principle of pur pose inheres in the supreme good.When the cause of a thing remainsunknown, investigation is best confinedto its outward signs and manifestations.

membership and bearing an engravedikeness of Thomas Jefferson especially

made for the Chapter by HerbertFichter of the United States Bureau ofEngraving.

In this connection it is interesting torecall the letter which Thomas Jeffersonwrote to the Mayor of Washington explaining his inability to attend the fifieth celebration of Independence Day.

The original letter was recently on display at the Library of Congress. It wasdated Monticello, June 24, 1826. Asignificant paragraph in that letter indicates how Jefferson’s contributiongrew from his firm conviction of therightness of the underlying principlesset forth in the Declaration of Independence. It is thoroughly Rosicruciann its viewpoint. “May it be to the

world, what I believe it will be (to someparts sooner, to others later, but finally

to all), the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkishignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and toassure the blessings and security ofself-government. ”

That time continues to be relatwas illustrated once more at Rosician Park during Convention, especifor those visiting the Museum one afnoon around three o’clock. Frater R. McCullough suddenly darted outhis office and began clearing the crowfrom the exhibition galleries. His was, “Time for lunch! The Museis closing.”

When one of the horrified hostesreminded him that he had already hlunch and that it was three o’clockthe afternoon, he looked puzzled incredulous. Checking once again whis watch, he saw it read 11:45.
