Melissa Wasserstein and Eimear Kenny, PIs NYCKidSeq : Incorporating Genomics into the Clinical Care of Diverse NYC Children This study aims at developing effective, sustainable and scalable ways in to address barriers for disadvantaged and under-represented minority populations for gaining access genomics in clinical settings. Specifically, it is exploring how genomic testing can help children with rare diseases and developing ways to communicate genomic results to people from diverse backgrounds, including Hispanic and African-American residents of East Harlem and The Bronx. I consult on designing the research ethics agenda, and serve as a Leader of the Bioethics Study Review Panel. I shall also be actively engaged in reviewing the study data and formulating policy recommendations based on those findings. Barbara Murphy, PI The APPOLO Project The APOLLO project will be investigating the donor genetics of African-American deceased and living donors and the outcomes of kidney transplant recipients who receive transplant organs from these donors. Specifically, the study is examining the APOL1, a gene found to be a risk gene for kidney disease in African-Americans. I will oversee the ethical aspects of the program. My role will involve providing insight and guidance on research with vulnerable populations that include people from minority groups who may also be economically and/or educationally disadvantaged. It will involve addressing issues related to genetic privacy and disclosing genetic information and the issues of justice that arise in organ allocation. I will also guide the investigators on providing patient education regarding genetic testing and obtaining informed consent for genetic studies.
