A Joint Message from the President of the Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo and the Chairman of the Board

The state of the economy in 2009 presented significant challenges for everyone. Careful planning by Friends of the Zoo leadership and staff, and the continued support of our donors and contributors, ensured that we remained stable despite the economic climate.

Our dedicated volunteers added significantly to our success through their record- breaking contribution of time and their boundless energy.

Friends and supporters often tell us about memories they have of the zoo – memories from their childhood, memories from when their children were growing up and memories from their most recent visit to the zoo – whether it was three days, three months or three years ago. One thing is certain: the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is a place where memories are made every day.

In the coming years, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo will provide more opportunities for new experiences and new memories. Projects undertaken by the county of Onondaga and supported by the Friends of the Zoo will include state-of the-art facilities for our animals and guests, a world-class breeding program and best-practice green initiatives – transforming our nationally accredited zoo into a preeminent, progressive zoo of the twenty-first century.

Thank you for all you’ve done over the past year. We hope you’ll continue supporting us with your memberships, contributions and visits, improving the zoo for generations to come and preserving memories for a lifetime.

The voyage of di s cover y i s not in s eeking new landscapes but in hav ing new eyes . Marcel Proust

In July, the zoo welcomed a herd of eight male guanacos from the Bronx Zoo. Guanacos are wild relatives of llamas and alpacas, their domesticated counterparts. They are also in the same family as camels and vicuñas.

The zoo was pleased to debut a new snake exhibit, home to a green tree python, a non-venomous python species. Although it is native to New Guinea, some Indonesian islands and the Cape York Peninsula of Australia, the green tree python is frequently confused with a South American species of snake, the emerald tree boa.

Inari, a baby red panda, was born to parents Cyril and Rose on June 13. The red panda is an endangered species; in the last 50 years, a 40 percent decrease in the population has been reported in China. They are challenged by habitat loss and unique dietary needs, as well as by low birth rates and high death rates in the wild.

Two fishers, Dodger and Fiona, became residents of the zoo in 2009. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is only one of four AZA accredited zoos in the United States to exhibit these carnivorous mammals. Despite their small size, fishers are skilled hunters, preying on rabbits, squirrels and sometimes domesticated animals. Fishers also share a skill with mountain lions – they are both the only regular predators of porcupines!

Three archer fish joined the zoo’s aquatic collection in the spring. The archer fish sprays a jet of water out of its mouth to shoot down its prey roaming above water. With its large eyes, the archer fish has great binocular vision allowing accurate aim. The archer fish can also capture its prey by leaping out of the water and grabbing it in its mouth.

Members of the zoo staff were surprised one June morning to find more than a dozen scorpion babies – called scorplings – in the emperor scorpion exhibit. Emperors are the largest scorpions in the world and average about eight inches in length.

Lucy, a female fossa, arrived at the zoo in November. With a recommendation from the Species Survival Plan, there are plans to introduce Lucy to the male, Koto, in hopes that they will successfully breed in the future.

Thanks to the generous support

of our friends, we were able to make a

number of important improvements at the

Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

The commitment and generosity of the individuals, groups, corporations and foundations listed here helps make the Rosamond Gifford Zoo a national leader in animal care, conservation and guest experience.

We thank you for your support.

Swimming and diving became a lot more fun for the North American river otters with the addition of a “log” slide and waterfall. Their original exhibit, built for the zoo’s grand reopening in 1986, was underwritten by the Rotary Club of Syracuse. This summer the club made a donation to refurbish the exhibit which now includes a sandbox, waterslide, waterfall, new plantings and shade areas.

New interactive displays in the social building were installed to provide more learning opportunities for children and their families.

The point-of-sale system in the Jungle Café was upgraded to allow for improved accuracy and increased efficiency to better serve our visitors.

The zoo’s Web site (rosamondgiffordzoo.org) was redesigned to improve navigation and aesthetics and better inform visitors as they plan their visit.

A Catering at the Zoo Web site (cateringatthezoo.org) was launched to expand awareness and enhance marketing efforts for corporate and social events.

Several benches along the half-mile Wildlife Trail were installed to provide additional places for guests to rest and contemplate the beauty of nature.

A new door was installed in the Eurasian lynx exhibit to improve animal and keeper safety.

Necessary renovations were funded for the opening of the guanaco exhibit.

Radiant heaters were purchased for the reef and frog exhibits.

The first phase of replacing off-exhibit animal holding areas was completed.

The beauty of the park was enhanced with several landscaping and horticulture projects.

Zephyr, a white-crested laughing thrush, hatched on March 7. The tiny chick received national attention as one of only three

white-crested laughing thrushes hatched in captivity worldwide. Although fairly common in Southeast Asia, South China

and East India, the species is becoming increasingly rare in North American zoos since concerns about

avian influenza have stopped importation. For the past several years zoos have

had to rely on captive breeding programs to maintain the

North American population.
