Retired Archbishop of Cape Town (South

Africa), Desmond Tutu rose to fame as an

opponent of the apartheid in the 1980s.

Throughout his life he has defended human

oppressed. He received the Nobel peace prize

birth of her 2nd child she contracted Polio and

the illness left her paralysed from the waist

down. Liz was determined to continue and

ALICE COACHMAN

Born in 1923 to a poor

American family, Alice was a victim of

racism and unable to compete or use

professional training facilities. She was not

deterred and ran anywhere she could using

home made equipment to practice the

high jump. In 1948 she entered the London

Olympics and won gold in the high jump.

NATALIE DU TOIT

Natalie began competing in

swimming competitions at the age of 14. However, in

2001 she had to have her leg amputated after being

hit by a car. Natalie soon returned to swimming

without the support of a prosthetic limb and qualified

for both able-bodied and multi disability events. She

competed in the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics,

and became the first athlete with a disability to

qualify for the final of an able-bodied event.
