1 Heart to Heart Legacy of Love 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.” “ Never pray for an easier life—pray to be a stronger person! Never pray for tasks equal to your power—pray for power equal to your tasks.” Quote from Phillips Brooks in “Streams in the Desert.” Dear Moms, This is what you all must face. Most of us feel inadequate and ill-equipped. However, God will give you the strength and inspiration you need to go the distance with your children. This last week I walked into my daughter Christina’s home to pick her up for a birthday shopping trip. I would hold Everett (2 months) (her 4 th boy). That was my job and a joyous one I will forever cherish. Her husband Jarret would take care of the other brothers. Then, to my delight, I saw in her dining room a message written on a large chalk board for her boys , Liam 7 years, Owen 5 years and Deacon 3 years. It was so memorable, I would like you all to see it. She heard it on a podcast from Bonni Levy Greiner. Family Values 1. We are thankful 2. We don’t hurt anyone or anything 3. We are born to be a witness for Jesus 4. We don’t lie ( Liam, their son thought of this) 5. We learn to be content in all things 6. We obey our parents at all times These were accumulated from various articles and podcasts Rules for Dinner 1. Complement the meal 2. Don’t start eating before everyone sits down 3. Stay at the table until everyone is finished 4. Share something good that happened 5. Share something you wish would have gone differently 6. A Word to Fathers ~ Bill Stephens

Be Brave

I just finished a new biography on Eric Liddell, “For the Glory, Eric Liddell’s Journey from Olympic Champi-on to Modern Martyr”. If you remember, Eric Liddell was the main focus of the movie, “Chariots of Fire” which was made in 1981. (Worth renting if you haven’t seen it.) The book tells the story of his 1924 Paris Olympic victory in the 400 meter race but also how he left fame and glory to be a missionary in China. If you aren’t familiar with the story, Eric Liddell refused to run on Sunday and therefore would not compete in the race he was sure to win. He instead ran the 400 meter race on Monday and set a new world record. He went from hero to villain in a matter of hours back to hero once he won the race. It struck me throughout the book how brave he was. I believe he was brave because of two character traits.

1. Eric Liddell lived out his life before an audience of One. Once he decided not to run on the Sabbath he could not be moved. Everyone in British royalty except the king tried to talk him out of his position but he refused to be persuaded. Bravery is the rarest of human qualities. If you love the praise of men, you will hate the vilification. Eric Liddell has inspired me to be braver.

2. Eric Liddell lived a life of sacrifice. You can be brave if you truly put the needs of others above your own. When Eric was in China the world was sliding into another world war. Eric preached to the Chinese (he was fluent in Mandarin) in the midst of Communist, Nationalist, and the invading Japanese. All three of these ar-mies hated missionaries from Europe. Eric died of a brain tumor why being held in a Japanese internment camp six months before the surrender of the Japanese.

Next month I will share another one of Eric Liddell’s virtues.

Art Teacher: Desiree Faustino Desiree Faustino and her husband are committed to Christ-centered homeschooling. They have 1 graduate of WCS PSP and are currently homeschooling 3 children with one on the way. Desiree's passion for Bible study and teaching her chil-dren a Biblical world view emanates from her own personal calling rooted in Deut. 6:4-9. Curriculum: We will be going through the Spears Art Studio K-8 Christian Art Curriculum, by Diane Shields Spears, Doctor of Christian Education. Each lesson includes Scripture and lessons in application of Scripture to our Christian life, making this curriculum a Bi-ble and character development tool. The format consists of a main theme for each instructional week with one or more activities for each grade level addressing art elements, art principles, design elements. We will have fun creating various art projects based on God's Word.

Contenders For the Faith

Contenders For the Faith is a boys’ group for grades 3 years old-High School. The group

is designed to help the boys learn new and fun skills, grow toward being a righteous man,

make friends, and have fun!

We meet throughout the school year on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 11:30

till 1:00 at Merchant Park San Dimas, CA. This is right before park day.

This year we will be studying the Olympics, countries and sports. High school will be ex-

ploring portrait photography, fitness, geography and more. We have fun Father/Son out-

ings as well as family outings. We love doing life together.

We are a parent led group which means every parent has to help in some way. Space is limited to

the amount of parents we have serving in the group. Helping does not require lots and lots of time. We all

pull together and limit group sizes to help meet the needs of the boys as well as the leaders.

Cost: $100.00 supply fee for the year

PLUS the cost of badges which will vary depending on the age of your child.

GENERATION JOSHUA CLUB - JOIN NOW!!!

I hope all of you are having an amazing summer. As life goes by, it is important to value the liberties and benefits that we enjoy every day as Americans. Over the years, countless men and women have fought, sacrificed, and even died to protect the nation that we love. The Generation Joshua Club, will equip students to carry on the legacy of liberty and justice that we hold so dear. GenJ Club members meet once a month to pray for our nation, register voters, write letters to the editor and to the legis-lator and be ready on short notice to be involved in campaigns for pro-family, conservative candi-dates. The vision behind GenJ Clubs has its roots in Alexander Hamilton's Christian Constitutional Socie-ty. Hamilton's vision was cut short after he fell prey to the bullet of Aaron Burr, but his vision can still become reality today. MAKE A DIFFERENCE! STUDENT ACTION TEAMS

Generation Joshua is organizing hundreds of volunteers to deploy this fall to select elections across the United States. They will be the final adrenaline needed to make a difference in these races. If you want to be a part of this incredible opportunity, you need to join GenJ and volunteer on the Student Action Teams! We will be working in races across the country. We have historically targeted states like: Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, Iowa, and New Hampshire.

What is a Student Action Team? Generation Joshua’s Student Action Teams (SATs), supported by HSLDA’s federal and state political action committees, provide young people (ages 11-19) practical hands on experience to go with their civics education by volunteering in political races on behalf of conservative, pro -life, pro-family can-didates. Since the fall of 2004, teams of high school and college aged students have worked on Presi-dential, House, Senate, and Gubernatorial campaigns across America. They have conducted phone banking, literature dropping, and campaigning resulting in remarkable successes. It is evident that dedicated young people can positively impact the political world and learn how to run for office some-day. Student Action Teams are the vehicles that help tomorrow’s leaders elect the leaders of today.

How much does it cost to participate in a Student Action Team? All of your basic lodging and food costs will be covered while on the Student Action Team. As Gener-ation Joshua begins to coordinate details for specific races we will have a better idea of how transpor-tation costs will be handled.

L.A. FAIR KIDS DAY FOR WESTERN CHRISTIAN PSP

BOLSA CHICA WETLANDS

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29th. K – 8th grade. Explore the many wonders of the wetlands! Experience the wet-lands firsthand during a guided nature hike and tour of the Bolsa Chica interpretive center. Coyotes, reptiles, and birds, oh my! There is always something exciting on the trails, and participants will get to see some of the diverse wildlife living at Bolsa Chica while learning about wetlands and their importance worldwide. Issues specific to Bolsa Chica are covered. Topics include, but are not limited to, wetland ecology, plants and animals, adaptations, watersheds, and the importance of wetland habitats and flyways, flood control, pollution control, and endangered species. The tour will include a craft activity – get creative and learn about the marine food web. Kids will learn about the different types of marine organisms living in the wetlands and how they are connected through the food web. Kids will make paint prints of fish predators and prey. PLEASE NOTE, in order to allow as many school-age kids to attend, we need to limit the number of adults attending per family to ONE adult. The tour will last about 2 ½ hours. Be prepared for the day: Bring water for the hike, wear closed-toed shoes (required), wear layered clothing, sunscreen/hats/sunglasses, bug repellent. You are welcome to bring cameras, binoculars, and magnifying glasses.

TIME: Please arrive by 10:15 am – the tour will begin at 10:30 am, and will end at 1:00 pm.

COST: $9 per child (K – 8th) AND $6 per adult (ONE adult per family). Please make check payable to CCL and write in the memo area “Bolsa Chica.”

These musicals bring history to life for students and include an educational course curriculum for teachers/parents that feature highlights of the historic individual's

life, additional fascinating facts and quiz questions and answers. For this production, Alexander Graham Bell. Fol-low inventor Alexander Graham Bell's exciting adventures as a youthful discoverer of scientific wonders. When he marries a charming deaf woman, their relationship leads to the amazing invention of the telephone. SAN DIEGO SAFARI PARK IN ESCONDIDO

MONDAY, OCTOBER 10th (This is a tentative date – Confirmations come out in Sept. Updated info will go out when we receive the confirmation) This is a self-guided tour and the price is definitely right (compared to the regular ticket prices!). See exotic animals that live in the African veldt and Asian plains, without ever leaving Southern California. The 2,000-acre San Die-go Zoo Safari Park has tigers, rhinos, lions, elephants, giraffes, antelope, etc., in atypical zoo en-closures. The animals roam the grasslands freely, in settings that resemble their natural habitats. There are numerous attractions to see. Walk Through the Ancient World Field Trip

This is a hands-on, interactive field trip that is designed to allow your student to actively participate in a rich retelling of ancient history. Through storytelling, games, and drama, history will come alive! Discover Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome through an imaginary tour of the an-cient civilizations. Students portray historical people of the past, such as Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, and Socrates as well as broaden their understanding of these ancient times through

use of maps, timelines, and games. Creative expression, note taking, and vocabulary development are fostered and encouraged. COLONIAL FARM LIFE ADVENTURE AT RILEY'S FARM

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27th. For grades K – 9th. Mark your calendar for another fun adventure at Riley's Farm! You will enjoy being in “apple country” as you participate in this historically-based field trip. This trip represents an exploration of American colonial life emphasizing the cultural and domestic pursuits of hearth cooking, children's peri-od games, cider pressing, weaving, etiquette, quill calligraphy and more. Bring water and wear closed shoes for walk-ing on grass and dirt. You can bring lunch or eat at their bakery or restaurant after the tour. TIME: Please arrive and be ready to line-up in your township by 9:30 am. The program will begin at 10:00 am and will conclude at 12:00 noon.

COST: $12.00 per person (ages 4 years old and up AND adults). Please note that it is not recommended that chil-dren under age 4 participate in the field trip. If younger siblings are in attendance while the tour is in progress, they need parental supervision at all times. PILGRIM FEAST AT SAN DIMAS CANYON PARK WEDNESDAY, November 16th. 11:00 am – 2:30 pm at San Dimas Canyon Park, 1512 Sycamore Canyon Rd., San Dimas (NOT Marchant Park where we have our Park Days). Join us as we gather for our annual Thanksgiving cele-bration! This event has become a highlight for the families of Western Christian PSP. There will be a short time of worship, a devotion, food, a nature hike, and crafts for all ages. Families in attendance are asked to sign-up to bring something to eat or drink. Sign-ups for food and drinks for the potluck will be taken at Tuesday School in Rancho and Friday School. You can also contact Denise Kross at [email protected]. Please have food cooked and ready to be eaten (there is not a kitchen at this park to cook or warm food). We always have a hungry crowd and need a lot of food and beverages!!! STAR OF BETHLEHEM AT THE TESSMANN PLANETARIUM

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1st. Ages 6 and up. The planetarium sky is set to around the time of Jesus’ birth. After an introduction of astronomy, the astronomer/narrator – via a slide show, Bible passages and using the planetarium “skies” – discuss how (and when) the Star of Bethlehem came about. This is a wonderful 75 minute presentation! (Please note that this program takes place in a completely dark theater. Some younger children may not feel comfortable sitting in the dark for the length of the show. Leaving and re-entering the

theater is discouraged because it does interrupt the presentation. This is just something to consider when thinking about signing-up). TIME: Please arrive by 10:30 am to check in. Allow yourself enough time to park and walk to the planetarium. There is no parking right next to the planetarium – you will need to park in the lots located in back of the college (give your-self an extra 15 minutes to park and walk to the planetarium). Chapel: worship time, praise reports, prayer, devotions, and announcements Mystery Science: Teacher- Tara Pomeroy / Tara and her husband have been homeschooling their two daughters for more than 9 years. She also teaches in the KidSPACE ministry at Community Baptist Church. Tara has a B.S. in biology from University of Alaska and a D.P.T. from USC. In this class, kids will be inspired to solve scientific mysteries and figure out how things work. We will explore concepts in chemis-try, biology, astronomy, physics, and earth science through lessons that build upon each other. Each lesson will include a hands-on activity to help solve the mystery presented. This class will be God-honoring and give the students an appreciation of His marvel-ous design of our world. You will receive a weekly e-mail detailing our activities and the concepts presented. Art Thru The Ages: Teacher- Traci Esser / Traci has her degree in Child Development and has 15 years of experience working as a director for school age children in both Options Surround Care and the Walnut Valley USD Enrichment Program. She was also a certified trainer for the California School Age Consortium for Behavior Management. She has been homeschooling her two children for the last 7 years. In this class, we will be exploring all forms of art from Creation to the present day. We will learn about different media, famous artists (including sculptors, architects, bakers, inventors, etc.) and how they helped shape our world. She has continued her education in child development and Biblical studies, taught 500 youth at a camp in Kenya, and served at orphanages. Nicole is a wife to Christ first, and to her husband, Jeff. They are very active in community affairs, serve as adoption support group leaders through a facilitation organization, and keep Christ at the center of homeschooling their 2 children. For this school year, our focus will be digging deep into the Book of Proverbs and the foundation of truth vs. lies. This will allow the children to be empowered by God’s validity through our Savior’s promises. We will learn the Biblical stance on addressing adversity through the fundamentals that Christ has entrusted us, while loving through all circumstances. Nicole will navigate the children through the Bible. Physical Education: Teacher- Monique Boore / Monique is a WCPSP mom of 2 current students and one WCPSP graduate. She has studied dance for 10 years, has been involved with softball, cheer, and soccer, and has knowledge of basic gymnastics. Having trained in Taekwondo for 20 years, Monique is a 4th degree black belt and has trained several national competitors and champions in this sport. She helped guide her son in becoming an elite athlete and national competitor in figure skating. This physical fitness class will introduce your child to a variety of fitness activities and sports. Activities such as plyometrics, iso-metrics, calisthenics, and stretching techniques will be employed for training. Sports may include basic martial arts, baseball, vol-leyball, obstacle courses, and fun old-fashioned games such as kickball and four square. The importance of good nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits, good sportsmanship, and a Godly attitude will be stressed.

She is excited to work alongside Stacy Yoshida where they will be working together to provide a nurturing and fun-loving environment for all the preschoolers to learn.

As we learn we will be working on a geography lapbook that the students will bring home at the end of the year. Each week we will learn about a new country or continent. I have a B.A. in Bible, a teaching credential in rehabilitative services, and a B.A. & M.A. in Communicative Disorders (Speech Language Pathologist).

4th Grade Carolyn Henry 16 weeks. B.S. Child Development In this class we will be covering the highlights of California's history. Each topic will include a short lesson with stu-dents recording what they have learned in a variety of ways as well as a fun project to complement our study. Science 5th to 8th grade: Charley Cheatwood Hello, my name is Charley Cheatwood and I will be teaching science this next year. I am currently the Family Pastor at Bethany Baptist Church in Montclair, Ca. My wife, Thiam, and I have been married for 16 years and we have 3 children – Gideon, Faith, and Eden – enrolled at Western Christian’s PSP. I have taught 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade in the Ontario-Montclair School District and in the Victor Elementary School Dis-trict and enjoy the elementary academic environment. I have always loved science and am looking forward to leading our classes into a hands-on discovery approach. This year we will be stud-ying famous artists such as Van Gogh and Paul Klee using different art mediums such as chalk pastels and watercol-ors. Crafts include creating a wooden spoon snowman, key chains, cardboard gliders and mini notebooks. Get your creative juices going and flowing! Art 5th to 8th Grade: Lisa Colosimo 8 weeks alternating 5th grade will be exploring different painting techniques throughout the year. They will be learning to mix their colors and create designs using color combinations such as: primary, secondary, tertiary, complementary harmony, split com-plementary harmony, and harmonious color balance. 6th grade will be exploring beginning drawing techniques throughout the year. They will be drawing such things as: underwater scenes, bugs, trees, flowers, sweets, winter, mountains, buildings, big city, 3d-shapes, dogs and cats, birds, animals, dinosaurs, faces, people, medieval fantasy, cars, trucks, and things on wheels. 7th grade will be going more in depth in their drawing skills. They will be working on developing their shading skills to add more depth in order to produce more realistic images. They will have the choice of focusing on facial portraits, crea-tures, still life, geometric/perspective designs, or cartooning. 8th grade will be learning to apply their art skills to different types of marketing venues. They will have the choice of designing holiday posters or cards, drawings of in-store or window display, DVD or DS cover of favorite movie or digi-tal game, or promotional sign or set design for VBS. If time and skill level permits, some of these designs may become 3-dimensional projects for second semester. All students will receive a sweet treat for turning in a completed project and at the end of each semester they will be evaluating each others work and a top few in each grade will receive a special item for best quality of work. PE 5th to 8th Grade Chris Rix, head coach 8 weeks alternating with Carter Petersen, assistant Chris played varsity football, baseball and basketball at Bishop AMAT high school and Santa Margarita high school. He then received a full scholarship to play quarterback at Florida State. There he became the 1st and only 4 year starter at FSU and also graduated with a degree studying communications. Following his college career Chris went on to the NFL with the San Diego Chargers. He is now a Pastor and serves as the director of ministry for the Fellowship of Christian athletes. He is also the founder and head coach of the Champion Training Academy here in Southern California, helping train athletes in all sports and all ages. Carter Petersen I am a WCPSP high school senior and will be the assistant PE coach this year for Friday School. Though I have spent the last two years leading worship in chapel, I look forward to my new position as assistant PE coach as I work with the fifth through eighth graders on a weekly basis. Over the past two years, I also assisted and filled in for the previous PE coach. It is a pleasure to continue the Petersen teaching “legacy” as my mom taught Friday school for many years and my sister led worship and taught guitar for our homeschool group as well. Tips for Preparing Your Student for College

Having a high school diploma is important but it doesn’t guarantee that you will be able to get

into college. It can be a difficult process these days. Here are 12 tips/suggestions for students

considering college entrance:

1. Plan ahead. When you know what college you want to go to, go to their website to make

sure that you are taking the courses that they recommend.

2. Align your course titles with those of Western Christian so that the colleges will recognize

what you have been doing.

3. Check the Western Christian website to see what courses CSU and UC want you to take.

4. Check these websites for more information about how to get into college as a homeschool-

you to explain to them why you are “head and shoulders better” than the others who are

also applying to college.

7. Take the tests. Take the SAT. Take the ACT. Take the SAT II subject tests. Find objec-

tive ways to prove that you are who you say you are. Test taking is a learned skill. Prac-

tice, practice, practice.

8. Take AP courses and their corresponding tests.

9. Take some community college courses or enroll in the part-time program at Western

Christian. This is another way to show that you are as good a student as your mother

thinks you are.

10. Make sure that you have all the courses that Western Christian requires for a diploma.

11. Most importantly, pray for God to go before you in this whole process.

12. Remember that it is hard to get into many college programs today, so you should have

several options. Don’t put all your hopes and dreams into one program unless you have

figured out several ways to get there.

Intro to Latin is a one-year high school level class.

Latin was the dominant language of most of Europe (The Roman Empire) for well over 1,000 years and has greatly influenced the English language (for example, from the Latin “scribere”, we get scripture, prescribe,

description, scribble, inscribe, etc.). It is the basis for the “Romance” languages of Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Knowing even a bit of Latin makes learning any of those languages easier. It also greatly increases our English vocabulary!

In this class we will be introduced to the Latin language. As we will only meet once per week, we will not cover every-thing typically covered in a year-long Latin I course; hence the class title: “Intro to Latin”. This class will provide a firm foundation on which to build should you desire to continue your studies in Latin or one of the Latin-based languages mentioned above.

High School Biology Biology is most exciting (and most truthful) when it is taught and learned in the context of our awesome Creator. His creation certainly reflects the majesty, wisdom, and power of God. Unfortunately, secular science is often taught in such a way as to become a stumbling block to the development of our faith. Science can instead be a stepping-stone to faith – the evidence for design is everywhere, especially in Biology! This course is taught with a Creation perspective. We will use the Apologia book, “Exploring Creation with Biology”. Topics include the five kingdoms of life, the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, genetics, ecology, evolution (as a theory), as well as plant, animal, and human biology. HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY This course provides a rigorous foundation in chemistry in preparation for college-level chemistry. Topics covered in-clude significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinet-ics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium. The lab period will alternate between Chemistry labs and a math tutoring time. Students often have difficultly under-standing the math that goes with each chapter, so we will focus on that every other week. We will still do at least one lab with each chapter. We will spend approximately two weeks on each chapter. Students will be given pages to read each day at home, and questions to answer. Short quizzes will be given for each chapter online. The goal of Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is to challenge students to critically evaluate what they have learned through-out their education. It provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge. God has revealed the most important truths about Himself and our salvation. While holding firmly then that there is truth, each discipline (history, social sciences, physical sciences, the arts, ethics and mathematics) is evaluated in terms of its methodology and limitations and in terms of the truth claims which these disciplines make. Each individual needs to be prepared to give an answer for their hope in Christ (1 Peter 3:15) and perhaps for our academic beliefs as well. TOK equips students to articulate what they believe and why they believe it. This fun and creative one year-course incorporates both Digital and Art Photography. Each semester is 16 weeks long, each class is 90 minutes.

Semester 1: students learn basic photographic skills and styles through bi-weekly assignments, field shoots and field trips. They will learn Documentary, Portrait, Commercial, Landscape & Nature photography skills. Students write a research paper on an established photographer, and quizzes are given based on class lectures.

Semester 2: this is a lab class where art pieces are created using alternative processes and photo techniques. This semes-ter students learn about photographers who create art with their photography, and are taught the techniques to create art project of their own. Photo transfers, sun printing, photo collage, photo lamps, among other projects are created.

I have been teaching this course for 12 years, and it is always a favorite class for the students; sure to improve their pho-tographic skills!

FilmMaking (9th- 12th grade) This course is an opportunity for your student to develop their creative voice through the art of film making; guiding them from a vague idea to the polished final product. We will cover the fundamentals of the cine-matic arts. Everything from scriptwriting to casting to special effects to editing to closing credits will be dis-cussed. Your student will gain a basic understanding of this art form that can be utilized to reach, potentially, millions for the kingdom of God. This one year course will fulfill the Visual and Performing arts require-ment.

Eric “Rick” Toland is the father of five current WCS PSP students. He has a BA in English with a minor in Psychology. He holds a current California Teaching Credential. Gifted with a heart for young people, a crea-tive mind, a love of language, and a flair for the dramatic, Rick feels uniquely called to this position. He has written, directed, produced, and starred in numerous skits, plays and other productions. He is excited to be able to bring three of his greatest passions (God, teaching, movies) together.
