  • On Saturday Nov. 21 at The Folly Theater if you ask the question “what’s in a name?” the answer will be “everything”. The Folly is proud to present the first formal on-stage convergence of two brilliant artists from our home area - that just happen to have the same phonetic name. There is iconic Roots/Blues/Americana singer songwriter keyboardist Kelley Hunt, with a highly decorated multi-decade international career and who has filled The Folly on several memorable nights. And there is folk/Americana singer songwriter banjo player Kelly Hunt, who’s star has been rising rapidly on the international folk scene since the May 2019 release of her critically acclaimed debut album “Even The Sparrow”. This show is a study in evocative complements and contrasts, inspired, skilled songwriting coming from very different stylistic directions and a collaboration of two soulful artists who are also friends and fans of each other….and just happen to answer to the same name.

Roots/Blues/Americana singer songwriter keyboardist, guitarist Kelley Hunt’s career comprises over 1800 live performances including some of the most significant festival stages in North America and Europe, airplay on 5 continents, 6 acclaimed commercial releases and hundreds of thousands of indie units sold and downloaded. Her music crosses roots music boundaries, organically referencing soul, roots R&B, gospel, folk, funk and Americana forms, and the piano vernaculars of Kansas City, New Orleans and St. Louis - all places where she and her family have roots. Her music is also known for at times taking on social observations and political commentary and for messages of hope and uplift. It’s all delivered with

passion and superior skills as a singer, keyboardist/guitarist and writer. Among volumes of critical praise doled out over her long career, The Seattle Times called her “One of the best songwriters in the genre.” NYC’s Elmore Magazine said: “(this release) shifts the focus to her songwriting skills and immense voice.” “...a superb live performer, immediately drawing you to the power of her music and her voice…” And Blues Music Magazine advised: “If there is truly a Higher Power, He/She should press PLAY on the latest release (“The Beautiful Bones”) by Kansas City’s Kelley Hunt. Rest assured that the takeaway will be, despite how everything’s been going lately, everything’s going to be okay after all...” Kelley is currently at work on her 7th full-length album projected for release sometime the first half of 2021.

Critical praise for folk/Americana singer songwriter banjo player, guitarist Kelly Hunt’s May 2019 debut effort “Even The Sparrow” was effusive from almost every corner of the national folk music scene. Uber music critic Greil Marcus wrote in Rolling Stone: “From the first instant you know you’re in a place where there is no sense of time, where anything can happen and no one will ever have to admit to a thing.” Stacy Chandler of No Depression said: “[Hunt’s] stories — gut-punching in their truthfulness and beautiful in their imagery, often simultaneously — make her debut album, “Even the Sparrow,” the musical equivalent of a book you can’t put down, one you’ll want to revisit again and again to catch every nuance and turn of phrase.” And “Sparrow” was a finalist for International Folk Music Awards 2019 album of the year among many accolades. A self-taught highly skilled banjo player, superior lyricist and storyteller, Kelly and her musical co-conspirator Stas’ Heaney have been hard at work on her highly anticipated sophomore release produced by lauded folk producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and artist Dirk Powell, and those recording sessions just wrapped at Powell’s studio near Lafayette, LA. A release date is expected sometime early in 2021.
