brand Roots Revival Co.The RootsRoots Revival Co. was born out of a love of music and old world skills and a desire to create. Roots Revival is another way of saying folk revival, and was a great way to tie in music with the revival of handcrafted goods.

Roots Revival Co. (RRC) features the handmade products of Shana Mattheis, a Montana native currently spending time in Southern California. Shana has tried her hand at woodworking, leather carving, metalsmithing and blacksmith-ing, all natural homemade skincare, as well as the fine arts. She has brought these varied skills and interests together to offer a variety of nature, music and vintage inspired products from jewelry and skin care to home decor.

The GoodsRoots Revival Co. jewelry is made with hand forged copper, brass, or sterling silver, with some pieces accented with genuine leather or natural gemstones such as turquoise. The look of RRC jewelry is intended to be rustic and earthy, with some of the pieces hav-ing unisex appeal. The stamped copper bracelets and traditional folk song lyric necklaces have been RRC classics. The all natural beeswax lip balm is an original formula designed to moisturize and protect without being waxy or oily. All natural ingredients such as beeswax, coconut oil, and almond oil lay the foundation for the original formula, and the varieties are scented using all natural essential oils and extracts.

band Katie FerraraWhy do you make music?I make music because it allows me to share my insights about relationships with the world and express my emotions. I find that music is very healing and has given me a sense of connection with others. I make music to create meaning in my own life as well as other people’s lives.

Your inspiration? I am inspired by relationships, mypersonal experiences, love, and heartbreak, romance. Traveling and hiking, conversations looking at paintings or watching or movies also inspires me.

When you’re not making music?I love hiking, cooking and collecting stamps. I’ve been collecting stamps since I was a kid from all over Europe and North America. I love the pictures on stamps and the stories each one carries.

Secret weapon/superpower?The ability to fly.

Unapologetic indulgence?Olives. I could eat these for days. I love them. Favorite place? The California Poppy Reserve in Bakersfield. This place is beautiful. Once a year in May, the park opens up to the public and you can walk amongst fields of golden poppies.

Tell Us A StoryA couple of years ago, I was invited to a dinner party at my friend Jake’s house. Jake is a professional chef and was making vegan tamales for all our friends that night. I was excited to try his recipe. I had been enjoying his fire roasted red bell pepper pico de gallo and knew that these tamales were going to be killer.

An hour before the party, he texted me the address of his house. I showed up with a bottle of wine and knocked on the front door. I was expecting Jake to answer, but instead a middle-aged man came to the door and welcomed me inside to a family eating dinner. I assumed this was Jake’s family so I entered, and sat down with them. The man said “Katie we’ve been expecting you for some time now and were so glad you could make it! “He then proceeded to crack open the bottle of wine I brought over and he poured me a glass. Then I asked the man where Jake was and he said “Oh let me go get him! He’s just in the back room.” So he left the dinning room only to return two minutes later with a panting black Labrador.

I thought to myself… “wait a minute…that’s not Jake…since when did Jake become a dog?” Then the man asked me how I knew Jake. I said “Oh we’ve known each other from high school. We used to hang out with the same group of friends in the park after school.” The man kind of looked at me kind of funny, and it was then I realized that we weren’t talking about the same Jake. Jake was this man’s dog and I was in the wrong house! So then I told the man that I thought I left something in my car and excused myself from the table. I walked outside to the front patio and text my actual friend Jake and he said he accidentally gave me the wrong address. All our friends were waiting for me to come over to the dinner party. I decided out of embarrassment to make a run for it from the house I was at. As I was leaving, I bumped into a girl about my age walking towards the house carrying a bottle of wine. I told her they were waiting for her in the house. She gave me a strange look as I hurried past her to my car.

and Artist Joseph Garnett

Where did you study?I took the Famous Artists Course when I was 13; I finished it at age 17. I finished my schooling in California at Chouinard Art Institute. It became CalArts at Valencia, CA about a year after I left.

Did you ever consider any other careers?I didn’t have much skill besides my painting and drawing abil-ity. At times, I worked at Sears when I was young in a number of departments; I worked as a bellhop when I attended the Chicago Art Institute. I’ve been a waiter, a security guard, a construction worker, a jailer, and a lot of other jobs I’d rather forget about.

What have been the major influences and inspirations for your work?My favorite artists are, Cezanne, Picasso, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Marcel Duchamp and the Dada group, Magritte, the Ash Can school, Surrealism ... the list goes on and on.

How has music influenced and played a role in your work?I have no musical ability at all, but I was a teenager when Elvis Presley brought rock and roll into my life. I saw him live on stage when I was about 17. Then, I saw a concert where Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison performed. In California, I had the good fortune to see many concerts-- George Harrison, the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, and so on. This was back when these groups were in their prime. I also saw Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Band, the Byrds. Oh, wow, I was a lucky dude! Plus, I had a good friend who was into jazz -- he took me to all of the most avant guarde jazz concerts; I saw Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderly, and so forth. I fell into doing work for the record companies, and did probably 30 or so album projects. I did the Doors memorial album, “Full Circle” after Jim Morrison died. I did the first Cheech and Chong album. There were albums for Grand Funk Railroad, REO Speedwagon, Loggins and Messina, Seals and Croft, and Aretha Franklin, as well as a poster for Alice Cooper. Then, there were many obscure groups I did albums for that didn’t become so popular.

What is your favorite piece of art you have created? In 1973, while recovering from an illness, I worked six months painting a super realist work called “Hat in the Water.” My sister owns this painting.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working as an artist?Doing the art itself is the greatest pleasure. Artists are very lucky that way. They live in a reality other people can’t experience. It’s a mental space they create while they’re doing a project. I think it’s sort of like the space you get into when you’re dancing.

“We Can’t Be Beat”

Whistling Dixies

While in the kitchen preparing Thanksgiving dinner back in 1978, Denise began whistling while she worked, and as they had done since they were young, her sister Charlene joined in. Their new sister-in-law Samantha listened fascinated as she heard this for the first time, and then decided it would be fun to join in. After years of this tradition, and at Samantha’s urging, they decided to record a few tunes to give as gifts for Christmas to invoke those fond family memories of those Tuscaloosa, Alabama holidays in the kitchen. It was so fondly received by the family, they decided, after much insisting, to create a longer album. The rest, as they say, is history.

Everyone loves an underdog, and DEADHORSE wRECkORDS is no exception. Red “Rogue” Stallion founded the label with his son Red, Jr. Despite their “green” beginning, they started learning the tricks of the trade and began to sign more artists to the label. Together, father and son laid the ground work that has allowed DEADHORSE wRECkORDS to stay sure-footed through the decades.

Whistling Dixies is one of the fake bands signed to the fake record label DEADHORSE wRECkORDS, an art project with music as the inspiration.
