Five tornadoes struck in southern Minnesota the day before. The sky was grey, threatening more rain, but by noon the rain had stopped and the sun peeked out for a few minutes.

Not to worry: It didn’t rain, and golfers at the sixth annual Roosevelt Golf Tournament were prepared in any case. The prize received by each golfer and volunteer this year was a very cool, high-quality, large umbrella—maroon with a Teddy, of course—donated by alum Jeff Norblom. All players also enjoyed a free lunch, two free drinks, golf with a cart, and a buffet, with entertainment by former sportscaster Dick Jonckowski.

One-hundred-forty golfers made the sixth annual golf tournament an enormous success. Huge thanks go to the fantastic golf committee members (see p. 4), led by Tim Martin. A year

of planning this event resulted not only in a great day for the participants, but several students will be receiving scholarships and several teachers, classroom grants. Thanks, of course, to all the alums who had a good day of golf and evening of entertainment.

There were more silent auction items than ever—golf clubs, tickets, signed photos or baseballs, along with a computer. This year tickets for the raffle were in high demand, as the prizes were exceptional: a wheel barrow of liquor or a gift card for diamonds. See also pages 5 and 8.

Write a letter to the Board telling why you would like to be on the Board. What skills can you bring to our group? Send it to the Foundation at RHS: 4029-28th Ave. So, Minneapolis, 55406. Letter is Due: Dec. 31, 2018. One to three members to be selected by Jan. 15, 2019

News Briefs……….. Over 200 Teddies are going to see Hamilton—Free! Students had to do a history project to get the tickets.

Kathleen Grube took a first in the History nationals in Washington…a first for RHS. Sixteen Teddies qualified for the state history contest last spring, also a new record!

In the May, 2018 issue of Minnesota Good Age, former broadcaster Dave Nimmer cited the success of two RHS journalism students: Dymanh Chhoun and Ifrah Jimale. Dymanh is now a photographer for WCCO-TV and Ifrah works as a tax examiner for the IRS in Atlanta.

In a review of the play “Isla Tuliro,” Star Tribune theater critic Rohan Preston gave retired theater teacher Lita Malicsi a rave review, calling her “a pillar of the Filipino-American community in the Twin Cities.”

Congratulations to alum Claire Kjome ’18 for placing 5th in Nationals for kick and 1st in Lyrical with her JFK dance team in spring AND making the UW River Falls dance team for this year.

Essential to having a successful evening, like the Hall of Fame induction, are people with both great ideas a willingness to work. Thanks, especially, to banquet chair Barb Hanson Pederson ’78 and committee chair Dan Dymoke ‘81.

A moment with two new Hall of Fame members: At right are former science teacher Al Cannon and entertainer and broadcaster Nancy Nelson. A spontaneous standing ovation occurred when Mr. Cannon’s name was announced.

When Nancy Nelson spoke, she chose to use part of her time to say how important Mr. Cannon was to her, her family, and the rest of the school. She said, “We were in a school that was very white, and I learned so much more than science from Mr. Cannon.”

The next induction of the Hall of Fame will be held in fall, 2020. Photo: Jackie Wincek/Michelle Schneider.

A busy September week-end for golfers and new Hall of Fame members

A lot goes into pulling off an event like the golf tournament. First are the sponsors, listed throughout this newsletter. Next a hard-working tournament committee is needed. And we have the best: Tim Martin ’84 (chair), Bob Anderson fs , Tom Draper ’81, Jamie Erion ’85, Dianne Flanders Hutchison ’84, Jeremy Jensen ’88 , Christol Kjome ’87, Alanna Martin ’86, and Jeff Norblom ’85.

Also important are the volunteers: Bob Anderson fs, Mary Bolling ’81, Tom Draper ’81, Danielle Jensen ’90, Kristin King ’86, Christol Kjome ’87, Colin Kilbane, staff, Mary Lathrop, fs, Angela Lillie ’84, Judy Reme ’58, Katy Reuben Manley ’81, and JoAnne Wilson, fs. Photo: Angela Lillie

Many Teddies golf at the tournament each year. Think about joining them next year. Above: Dave Bukowski, Chris Hentz,, Mark Enfield, and Tim Martin.

Bits and Pieces…….. Students from RHS who are considering careers in performing arts participated in a field trip to the Guthrie and U of M Fine Arts program. At the Guthrie, students participated in a workshop, saw an amazing performance, and networked with a Guthrie director, actor, and casting associate. Then they went to U and talked with the program director about how to get into the program and received a tour of the theater classrooms at the U.

Correction from the last issue: David and Darlene Vanderkooi Pickit 58/59 are not RHS staff members!

From the Athletic Director: Fall & winter sports Greetings to all,

The following are the head coaches for the fall teams: Volleyball:  Liz Larson Boys Soccer:  Ngange Akale Girls Soccer: Alexandra Lewis Football:  Adam Flanders Cross Country:  Dave Sharp  (RHS Grad) Tennis: Jose Williamson Adapted Soccer: Michael Wright Swimming:  Jeff Sanders

For the winter: Men's  Head Basketball Coach is Mike Walker (RHS Grad) !!!!!!!

All of the above are working extremely hard to put the best product on the court, or field to represent Roosevelt High School, and they are doing a GREAT job at that.

I had the good fortune of attending the third Hall of Fame banquet and I am still amazed of the quality people who attended RHS and finally are being recognized for their outstanding accomplishments at RHS and in their lives.

I feel uplifted after each of the banquets and am honored to be a member of the Hall of Fame committee.

Again, I could use your help in a monetary way.  There is a great need in the athletic department for uniforms and equipment.

Be sure to check off "athletics" when you return your Foundation donor sheet.  Any gift of money you contribute to the Foundation and earmark for athletics goes directly to help our student athletes.
