2019 OKLAHOMA TEACHER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS Donna Gradel

2018 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year

Welcome to our fourth annual EngageOK Summer Education Conference! We are “On the Road” again, stopping at Ada, Owasso, Bartlesville, Norman North, Durant, Duncan and Woodward schools. Thanks to incredible engagement from educators over the past 3½ years, we’ve accomplished so much together:

• Won the largest pay raise in state history for teachers – $5,001 to $8,395, depending on service and experience. Scan the QR code to see your gross increase.

• Infused $480 million into public education, an important fi rst step in reversing devastating cuts of recent years.

• Slashed nearly 40 percent of the general testing budget – $8.2 million a year – since 2015 and eliminated everything except federally required tests.

• Overhauled the school accountability system to refocus on student growth and tell the stories of schools with greater context.

• Developed, with the help of nearly 150 teachers, comprehensive curriculum frameworks for ELA,

math and science to support instruction of new academic standards.

• Gave the SAT or ACT to all high school juniors in the state at no cost to districts or families.

• Emphasized trauma-informed instruction with EngageOK sessions and an upcoming statewide summit in October.

• Piloted Individual Career Academic Plans (ICAPs) in rural, suburban and urban districts, ensuring 6-12th grade students have a meaningful tool to help them achieve their personal and academic goals.

• Soft-launched an interactive platform that serves as a digital interface among business, family and classroom to facilitate live lessons and authentic conversations about teacher externships, career exploration and more.

Thank you for all you do – and for the incredible grassroots advocacy that saw us make history for public education last spring. As much as we have achieved, we still have work to do together.

I hope you’ll join me for year two of “The Joy Lunch Club” to discuss what’s on your mind. I’d love to hear from you!

I am eternally grateful for your commitment and dedication.
