1. Outline This is the Motor Driver Board Ver. 4 Assembly Manual for the Micom Car Rally Kit Ver. 5.

This board is mounted in the micom car kit and has the following features.

It can drive two motors in forward, reverse, or brake mode.

It can control one servo.

It can control the on/off states of two LEDs.

It can detect the state of a single pushbutton switch.

Currently (April, 2011), the standard software that supports this board is kit07_38a.c. This software is available on

the Micom Car public web site.

This jumper selects the left motor PWM output pin and the direction switching pin.

For the RY_R8C38 board If the RY_R8C38 board is used, nothing needs to be done. Originally, it would have been necessary to short pins 1 and 3, and pins 2 and 4, together, but these are already shorted together in the pattern on the solder side of the board.

JP2 Servo power supply switching 1 to 3 This jumper switches the source for power supply to the servo

power supply pin (pin 2 on CN2).

Parts Overview

The 6 0.01 memory (103) ceramic capacitors are not mounted on the board, but rather are mounted directly on the

motors. See the Micom Car Kit Body Assembly Manual for details.

Note: There may be differences in compatible components between different lots. (That is, the actual components may differ somewhat from the ones shown in the photograph above.)

5.1 Standard Kit Power Supply Configuration

In the standard power supply configuration in the Micom Car Rally Kit Ver. 5, the control and drive systems are

separated and the motor servo side assures that the microcontroller is not reset, no matter how much power is drawn.

The figure below shows the power supply common foundation in the standard kit.

5.2 Power Supply Configuration with Increased Drive Voltage

The motor speed can be increased by increasing the drive system voltage (by increasing the number of batteries used). If 6 batteries are used for the motor power supply, the voltage will be 7.2 V and if 8 batteries are used, it will be 9.6 V. The micom car rally rules, however, stipulate that the number of batteries not exceed 8. Therefore the batteries are shared between the control system and the drive system. In this case, although the motor will not be damaged by applying a voltage of 9.6 V (strictly speaking, this is not desirable, since the motor's rating is 6 V), since the microcontroller's guaranteed operating range is 2.7 to 5.5 V, it may fail to operate if a voltage that exceeds 5.5 V is applied (the absolute maximum rating for the voltage is 6.5 V; if a voltage of 6.5 V or higher is applied, the microcontroller will be damaged). Therefore, a 3-terminal regulator is used to hold the microcontroller and servo voltages to their rated values. However, when shared batteries are used, if the motor draws a large current and the voltage falls to under 2.7 V, the microcontroller will be reset. When shared batteries are used, care must be taken to assure that the microcontroller is not reset. If the components in the LM350 Add-On Set are added and a voltage of over 7 V is used, an LM2940-5 will generate the 5 V level used by the microcontroller and other logic circuits and an LM350 will generate the 6 V level used by the servo.

5.10 Completion

This completes the mounting operations. At this point, it is essential to visually inspect the board for bad solder

connections, for incorrect component insertions, and for incorrect component orientations.

Do not apply power at this point. The servo voltage must be adjusted. The trimmer must be adjusted as

described in the next section.

5.11 Trimmer Adjustment

This adjustment verifies and adjusts the voltages of the mounted 3-terminal regulators. The servo may be

destroyed if it is mounted without adjusting this trimmer. This adjustment must be performed.

On+ -

Supply a voltage of between 7.2 and 9.6 V to the Motor Driver Board Ver. 4 CN1 connector. (Use 6 to 8 batteries.)

2

+-Multimeter

Check whether or not the LM2940-5 output voltage is 5 V. Set the multimeter to voltage measurement mode and connect the + probe to the CN3 connector's pin 1 and the - probe to pin 4.

3

The level is normal if it is within the range 4.75 to 5.25 V (5 V ±5%). If the voltage is too low, check whether the input voltage is over 7 V, and if it is too high, check for short circuits and incorrect mounting of the components.

Page 54: Micon Car Kit, Ver.5 Motor Drive Board, Ver.4 Assembly Manual · Micon Car Kit, Ver.5 Motor Drive Board, Ver.4 Assembly Manual . ... Motor Drive Board Ver. 4 Assembly Manual 3 2.2

50

4

Next, verify the LM350T output voltage. This is the voltage that is applied to the servo. First, remove the insulation from the thick lead. Removing about 1 cm will be enough.

5

Put the insulation removed from the wire in the previous step on the CN4 connector. Other things, such as heat-shrink tubing, may also be used. This is to prevent pin 1 from being shorted when measuring the voltage with the multimeter. This may seem inconvenient or bothersome, but it must be done. The circuit may be destroyed if pins 1 and 2 are shorted together.

6

+- Multimeter

Next, check the voltage output from the servo connector. Apply the multimeter to the CN4 connector pins as follows. Connect the tester red (+) probe

to the center pin Connect the tester black (-)

probe to the pin at the left (by CN1).

7

Here, the voltage is 9.53 V. If the servo is connected in this state, it will be destroyed immediately. Adjust the voltage with the trimmer.

51

8

Reduces the voltage Increases the voltage

Adjust the voltage with trimmer VR1. Turning it clockwise increases the voltage and turning it counterclockwise reduces the voltage.

9

Since the servo rating in the standard kit is 6.0 V, adjust the voltage to be 6.0 V with the trimmer. There are also servos with a rated value of 7.2 V, and others with other voltages. Adjust the voltage to match the rating of the servo that will be connected. This completes the servo voltage adjustment.
