    How Much Coating Is Required?

The amount of coating required, and the number of coats, is determined by the duration of thewarranty that is specified. It also varies with the specific substrate being coated. Over concretefor example, a minimum total of 25 dry mils (635 microns), applied in a minimum of 2 coats,is required for a 5-year warranty. For a 10-year warranty, an additional coat must be applied atthe rate of 1 gallon per 100 sq. ft. (.4 l/m). Over metal surfaces, a minimum total of 15 drymils (381 microns), applied in a minimum of 2 coats is required. To increase this to 10-years,

an additional gallon per 100 sq. ft. (.2 l/m) is required.

    Are The Warranties Extendable?

Yes, all of our warranties are extendable in either 5-year or 10-year increments, dependingupon the thickness of the recoat. At the end of the initial warranty period, the Owner will needto arrange for a roof inspection with the Manufacturer's Representative. At this time, any war-ranted and/or non-warranted damage to the roof is repaired. The overall condition of the roofwill also be assessed at this time to determine how much coating is required for the desiredwarranty extension. A minimum of 1.5 gallons per 100 sq. ft. (.6 l/m) is required for a 5-year extension and 2.5 gallons per 100 sq. ft. (1.0 l/m) for a 10-year extension.

How Long Will The Coating System Last?

Unfortunately, there is not a black and white answer to this question, since the ultimate coatinglife is dependent upon many factors. Initial thickness applied, service temperature, UV level, wind, abrasion, foot traffic exposure, rain, ponding water, etc. all have some affect on the lifeof the coating system. A 100% acrylic system such as ROOF MATE will typically wear at avery low rate of approximately .5 mil (12 microns) per year.

How Do I Know When It Is Time To Recoat?

After many years of protection, the base coat will eventually begin to show through the top-coat. This is why it is recommended that the base coat be a different color than the top coat.Typically light gray and white are used respectively, although the top coat can be tinted to awide range of standard and custom colors.

What Is The Typical Recoat Procedure?

The roof coating system is very easy to recoat. After inspecting the roof and making any nec-essary repairs, it is thoroughly cleaned using water, in conjunction with a biodegradable clean-ing agent such as United Cleaning Concentrate (UCC). It is then high-pressure rinsed usingclean water. After allowing the existing coating to dry, either one or two coats of additionaltopcoat material are applied, using either airless spray or roller, at a predetermined rate to meetthe warranty extension requirements.

Our products are guaranteed to meet established quality control standards. Information contained in our technical data is based on laboratory and field testing, but is subject to

change without prior notice. No guarantees of accuracy are given or implied, nor does UNITED assume any responsibility for coverage, performance or injuries resulting fromstorage, handling or use of our products. Liability, if any, is limited to product replacement or, if applicable, to the terms stated within the executed project warranty.

Is Full Fabric Reinforcement Necessary On All Roofs?

No, the use of full fabric is only necessary on roofs that exhibit a large amount of cracks, splits, seams, joints, etc. If there are a limited number of these symptoms, then they can be individuallyreinforced using Roof Mate Mesh, Uni-Tape or Roof Mate Butter Grade depending on thetype of roof substrate and the specific detail. Concrete roofs that do not exhibit any movingcracks, single-ply roofs with sound seams, and built-up or modified bitumen roofs that do nothave splits between plys do not require full fabric reinforcement. However, it can always be

specified should additional reinforcement be desired. Otherwise, only the protrusions,vertical/horizontal interfaces and transition areas need to be individually reinforced.

What Type Of Reinforcement Should Be Used?

We recommend the use of stitchbonded polyester fabric for most applications, since it is verystrong yet has excellent pliability and elongation properties. There are 3 basic types of detailreinforcement. The first method is to embedding stitchbonded polyester fabric, such as RoofMate Mesh, into the wet base coat. (Butter Grade can also be used for embedding this fabric). The second type, which is applicable on metal, single-ply and smooth concrete substrates, is anadhesive-backed reinforcement, such as Uni-Tape. This material incorporates a semi-cured butylrubber on the back that develops tenacious adhesion to the substrate. The third type of reinforce-ment, which is applicable to metal, single-ply, concrete and some asphaltic substrates depending

on their condition, is a high viscosity, liquid-applied reinforcement material such as Roof MateButter Grade. If necessary, fabric reinforcement can also be embedded into these products.

How Much Abrasion Will The Coating Withstand?

The acrylic coating system will withstand any normal weather conditions, as well as any foottraffic required for maintenance, cleaning, etc. In high wear areas, such as footpaths, roofinggranules can be broadcast into the final topcoat to provide additional wear resistance. A non-skidacrylic/epoxy wear coat, such as Rhino Top, can also be applied over the roof membrane in highuse areas or sections of the roof that are regularly used as walking decks or recreational areas.Breathable walk pads, such as yellow spaghetti, can also be used in high use walkways.Should increased physical properties be required, Roof Mate HT can be utilized. It exhibitsapproximately twice the tensile strength, tear strength and elongation values as typical 100%

acrylic coatings. Under rare conditions of extreme physical use or particular chemical resistancerequirements, other types of roof coating elastomers are available, such as urethanes or silicones.

Does The System Withstand Ponding Water Conditions?

It is always good roofing practice to incorporate slope-to-drain to allow for positive drainagefrom the roof. This eliminates the build-up of dirt and debris, and prevents algae and plantgrowth. While ROOF MATE can easily withstand the minor ponding water encountered on typ-ical roofs, all surfaces should be free from excessive ponding water. A roof surface that allowsstanding water 48 hours after a rainfall does not exhibit adequate drainage, and appropriate cor-rective action should be taken to rectify the situation prior to coating.

    APPLICATION

Reinforce all moving cracks, seams, splits, controljoints, vertical/horizontal interfaces, roof terminationpoints, openings, transition areas, around the base ofall vents pipes and other protrusions, as well as aroundHVAC units and other roof mounted equipment withROOF MATE Mesh, a polyester reinforcementfabric, embedded into ROOF MATE BASECOAT.

Pre-measure the area to be reinforced and cut a strip of 4",6" or 12" (10, 15 or 20 cm) ROOF MATE Mesh(depending upon the detail) to the desired length. ApplyROOFMATE BASECOAT liberally over the area to bedetailed, at a minimum rate of 1.5 gallons per 100 sq. ft.(.6 l/m), and embed the mesh so that it is centered overthe detail area. Using a brush or roller, work the ROOFMATE Mesh into the ROOF MATE BASECOAT toeliminate air pockets, wrinkles and gaps. Apply additionalROOFMATE BASECOAT as necessary, at a minimumof 1 gallon per 100 sq. ft. (.4 l/m), to ensure that theROOF MATE Mesh is thoroughly saturated, encapsu-lated and fully adhered to the substrate.

When incorporating ROOF MATE Fabric for rein-

forcement of the entire roof, apply ROOF MATEBASECOAT at the rate of 1.5 gallons per 100 sq. ft.(.6 l/m) to a 4' (1.2 m) wide section of roof where thefabric reinforcement will begin. Embed and encapsu-late the end of the reinforcement fabric roll so that it isanchored at that point.

Roll or spray-apply ROOF MATE BASECOAT to asection of roof 4 to 10 feet (1.2 to 3 meters) beyond thefabric at the rate of approximately 1.5 gallons per 100sq. ft. (.6 l/m). Roll the reinforcement fabric over thewet ROOF MATE BASECOAT, allowing the fabricto conform to the surface contours. To ensure completeencapsulation of the fabric, it must be rolled into the

ROOF MATE BASECOAT while it is still wet. Donot allow the ROOF MATE BASECOAT to surfaceskin prior to rolling out the fabric.

Work the ROOF MATE BASECOAT evenlythroughout the ROOF MATE Fabric so that it istotally saturated, eliminating any air pockets, wrinklesor gaps. Apply an additional coat of ROOF MATEBASECOAT over the top of the saturated ROOFMATE Fabric at the rate of approximately 1 gallonper 100 sq. ft. (.4 l/m) so that it is totally encapsulat-ed. Take extra care to ensure that edges of the fabricare well saturated and adhered. Overlap consecutivepasses of ROOF MATE Fabric a minimum of 2" (5cm) on each side.

Substrate porosity and texture will determine theamount of ROOF MATE BASECOAT required toencapsulate the reinforcing fabric. Allow the ROOFMATE BASECOAT to dry thoroughly prior to apply-ing ROOF MATE Finish Coat to the roof.

    APPLICATION (Continued)

When using ROOF MATE BASECOAT to achievefilm build prior to application of the ROOF MATEFinish, apply at the rate of 1 to 1 gallons per 100 sq.ft. (.4 to .6 l/m) per coat to achieve the desired filmthickness.

ROOF MATE BASECOAT may be applied by air-less spray equipment or roller. Brush or roller may beused for touch-up and edging work, or for small areas

that are not practical for spray application. Airlessspray is best suited for field application.

ROOF MATE BASECOAT can be used to obtain upto of the total dry film thickness requirement spec-ified. However, under no circumstances should thesubsequent ROOF MATE Finishbe less than 12 drymils in thickness at any location.

    LIMITATIONS & PRECAUTIONS

ROOF MATE BASECOAT should generally not beused over cold storage tanks or buildings where avapor barrier is required. ROOF MATEBASECOAT will freeze and become unusable attemperatures below 32F (0C), or when there is apossibility of temperatures falling below 32F (0C)within a 24-hour period after application.

ROOF MATE BASECOAT requires complete evap-oration of water to cure. Cool temperatures and highhumidity retard cure. Usea pump with a minimum 1-gallon per minute (3.8l/minute) output and 2,000 psi (13,790 kPa) pressurecapability. Use a reversible, self-cleaning tip with anorifice size of .027" to .039" (.69 to .99 mm).

ROOF MATE HT must be applied in two or moreseparate coats to ensure proper coverage and curerate, and to achieve a pinhole-free continuous filmIt is recommended that Gray be used for the firs

coat(s), thus making it easier to visually control theapplication of the final coat in White or specifiedcustom color.ROOF MATE HTapplied at the rateof one gallon per 100 sq. ft. (.4 l/m) will theoreti-cally yield 8.3 dry mils (211 microns).

Each coat ofROOF MATE HT shall be applied ina direction perpendicular to the previous coat exceptwhen coating metal roof panels. On metal roofseach coat of ROOF MATE HT shall be applied

parallel to the vertical ribs, taking care to coat bothsides of each rib. Edges of flat roof areas shall be

pre-coated in a picture frame configuration.

ROOF MATE HTshall extend up and over all roofsubstrates on vent pipes, walls, parapets and other

protrusions to terminate a minimum of 3" (7.5 cm)above the substrate, creating a self-terminatingflashing. Extend coating up and under all counter-flashings where utilized.

All surfaces must be uniformly coated and freefrom voids, pinholes or blisters. Adequate curingof detail work must take place prior to applyingROOF MATE HT base coat. Subsequent coats ofROOF MATE HT shall be applied only afterallowing adequate cure time for the precedingcoat(s). Initial cure or dry time to achieve resistance

to rain or overnight dew will normally require sev-eral hours. Total cure to achieve long term resis-tance to ponded water will usually take 24 to 72hours depending on ambient conditions.

Consult separate ROOF MATE Master GuideSpecifications for Board-Stock Insulation, Built-Up, Modified Bitumen, EPDM, Hypalon, Metal andConcrete roof substrates for specific film thicknessrequirements to qualify for UNITEDS 5, 10 and15-Year Standard and System Warranties.

COATING APPLICATION (Cont.)If any form of dirt, sand, pollution fallout, etc. isdetected on the surface ofROOF MATE HT it isnecessary to remove this material before applyingan additional coat ofROOF MATE HT. Surfacesshould be washed using a biodegradable cleanersuch as UNITEDS United Cleaning Concentrate(UCC) only after the ROOF MATE HT film hasfully cured. Rinse thoroughly with clean, fresh

water to remove all traces of the chemical cleanerand allow to dry. It is the responsibility of the appli-cator to ensure that the roof is sound and sloped

properly, and that the expansion joints, vents andflashings have been installed as specified orrequired.

As work proceeds, the applicator must periodicallycheck the number of gallons used compared to thesquare feet coated. If adequate gallonage has not

been used according to UNITEDS published war-ranty requirements and/or project specifications, adjust accordingly and apply additional material to

    previously coated area(s).

In hot temperatures, partially full containers ofROOF MATE HT may surface-skin. Examine

before mixing and remove skin (if present) prior tomixing. To prevent skinning in hot weather duringapplication or in partially full containers, cover con-tainer with polyethylene sheetingaftermixing.

ROOF MATE HT , properly mixed, is easilypumped and sprayed at temperatures of 60F (16C)or greater. Thinning or reducing the mixture is notrecommended. Addition of water reduces the richthixotropic nature of ROOF MATE HT anddecreases its ability to achieve a heavy film build

    with excellent vertical hold.

ROOF MATE HThas excellent dirt releasing abili-ty. Its smooth, low sheen surface resists penetrationof soil and contamination, allowing the surface to bereadily cleaned.

Use water and United Cleaning Concentrate(UCC) or other similar detergent to thoroughlyflush equipment. Purge the water from the systemusing Mineral Spirits or Glycol Ether. Leave the sol-vent in the lines and equipment until next use. It isnot recommended practice to leave ROOF MATEHTin the pump or hoses.

LIMITATIONS & PRECAUTIONSROOF MATE HT should generally not be usedover cold storage tanks or buildings where a vapor

barrier is required. ROOF MATE HT will freezeand become unusable at temperatures below 32F(0C), or when there is a possibility of temperaturesfalling below 32F (0C) within a 24-hour periodafter application.

ROOF MATE HT requires complete evaporationof water to cure. Cool temperatures and high humid-ity retard cure.Do not apply if weather conditionswill not permit complete cure before rain, dew,fog or freezing temperatures occur. Do not applyin the late afternoon if heavy moisture condensationmay appear during the night.

ROOF MATE HT may be applied to a wide rangeof clean, dry and structurally sound substrates.Slope for positive drainage is recommended for anyroofing application.

Avoid breathing of vapor or spray mist. For exterior

applications, approved (MSHA/NIOSH) chemicalcartridge respirator must be worn by applicator andpersonnel in vicinity of application. Check filtersfrequently to ensure proper protection. If usedindoors, provide mechanical exhaust ventilation.During indoor spray operations, air line masks or

positive pressure hose masks must be worn. Avoidcontact with eyes and contact with skin.

Adequate precautions must be taken when applyingROOF MATE HT to occupied buildings to ensurethat air conditioners and ventilation units are turnedoff and covered to prevent vapors from entering the

building. Windows should also be kept closed. Signs

should be posted around the area to advise buildingoccupants or visitors of the spray activity.

It is good roofing practice to schedule an annualcleaning of the roof surface. This will eliminate theaccumulation of leaves, dirt, debris and other conta-mination. It will also alert the Owner as to anymechanical damage or other problems that maycompromise the integrity of the roofing system.Roofs subject to a high degree of traffic or pollutionfallout may require more frequent cleanings.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONROOF MATE FABRIC and ROOF MATE MESH are stitchbonded, 100% polyester materials made specificallyfor use with elastomeric coatings in roof membrane construction. Stitchbonded polyester is one of the strongestfabrics available for adding reinforcement to seams, splits, joints, cracks, protrusions and flashings. ROOFMATE FABRIC and ROOF MATE MESH offer an unusual combination of high strength properties and goodelongation for excellent thermal stress resistance. The fabric is very pliable and is designed to conform to irregularand dissimilar surfaces more easily than other soft fabrics. ROOF MATE FABRIC and ROOF MATE MESHboth have high absorption capability, allowing them to easily wet into and become encapsulated by the liquid roof-ing membrane, forming tough, waterproof details or overall reinforcement.

BASIC USESROOF MATE FABRIC is designed to reinforce large roof areas that are heavily alligatored or contain numerouscracks, seams, joints or splits. ROOF MATE MESH is used to reinforce detail areas such as seams, splits, drains, vents and other protrusions through the roof surface.

    PACKAGINGROOF MATE FABRIC is supplied in 40" (1 m) width by 324' (99 m) length rolls designed to cover 1,000 sq. ft.(93 m) including a 2" (5 cm) overlap. ROOF MATE MESH is available in 4" (10 cm), 6" (15 cm) and 12" (30cm) width by 300' (91 m) length rolls.

APPLICATIONAll surfaces must be dry and free from dirt, dust, grease, oil, pollution fallout and any other contaminants that mayinterfere with proper adhesion. ROOF MATE FABRIC is embedded into a wet base coat of ROOF MATE, RoofMate Basecoat, Roofshield or other elastomeric basecoat applied at 1 to 2 gallons per 100 sq. ft. (.4 to .8 l/m),

depending on the surface profile. The fabric is worked into the basecoat with a broom or roller so that it is completelysaturated. It is then topcoated with additional coating at 1 to 1 gallons per 100 sq. ft. (.4 to .6 l/m) to totally encap-sulate the fabric. Overlap edges of fabric a minimum of 2" (5 cm) on each edge. If using Unibase to encapsulate theROOF MATE FABRIC, it is applied at the rate of 2 to 4 gallons per 100 sq. ft. (.8 to 1.6 l/m), by airless spray orroller, from the top side of the fabric. Distribute the Unibase evenly throughout the fabric using a broom or roller, eliminating any wrinkles, gaps or air pockets. ROOF MATE MESH is installed as required after application of any

primers or caulk, and prior to application of the coating on the field of the roof. Cut the mesh to the desired length.Slit the bottom half of mesh used around vent pipes and other circular protrusions so that it lies flat. Utilizing a rolleror brush, apply a 6 to 14 (15 to 35 cm) inch wide strip-coat of coating, depending on mesh width, at 15 to 20 mils(381 to 508 microns) thick over areas to be treated. Immediately embed mesh into wet coating and work it with a

brush or roller so that it is saturated with coating. Apply an additional 15 to 20 wet mils (381 to 508 microns) overthe top to completely encapsulate the mesh. ROOF MATE MESH shall be Xd or heat-melted when applied overfastener heads on metal roofs so that it lies flat. UNIBASEACRYLIC FABRIC ADHESIVE

    BASECOAT & PRIMER

    Roof CoatingDivision

    Technical Data & Application Instructions

PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONUNIBASE is a low viscosity, highly penetrating, 100% acrylic polymer adhesive and primer that developsa tenacious bond to existing roof substrates. It was designed to penetrate and adhere reinforcement fabricswhere required, as well as act as a bonding primer to enhance the adhesion of Roof Mate topcoats overbuilt-up, modified bitumen, wood, concrete or previously coated surfaces. UNIBASE forms a flexible, waterproof base for applying the Roof Mate finish coats. It is an easy to apply, cost effective method ofsecuring reinforcing fabric over surfaces prone to structural movement, allowing the stress to be distributedover a broader area of the roof coating system. It also wets into existing substrates or existing coatings tolock down residual dust or contamination, thereby maximizing adhesion of the subsequent acrylic topcoat.UNIBASE also blocks the migration of asphaltic oils, so that the Roof Mate finish coats can be appliedwithout risk of the bleed-through problems often associated with conventional roof coating systems.UNIBASE is available in standard translucent green color.

APPLICATIONSurfaces shall be clean and dry, and free of dirt, dust, loose granules, pollution fallout or other contamina-tion. Thoroughly mix containers to achieve an even consistency prior to use. When utilizing UNIBASE toembed reinforcing fabric, first apply UNIBASE to a small section of roof where the fabric reinforcementwill begin. Embed and encapsulate the end of the Roof Mate Fabric roll so that it is anchored at thatpoint. Roll out 4 to 10 feet (1 to 3 meters) of fabric at a time and either spray apply or pour UNIBASEevenly over the top side at the rate of 2 to 3 gallons per 100 sq. ft. (.8 to 1.2 l/m), allowing the fabric toconform to the surface contours. Work the UNIBASE evenly throughout the fabric using a broom or rollerso that it is totally encapsulated, eliminating any air pockets, wrinkles or gaps. Take extra care to ensurethat edges of the fabric are well saturated and adhered. Overlap consecutive passes of Roof Mate Fabric a

minimum of 2" (5 cm) on each side. When used as a primer or basecoat, applyUNIBASE

at the rate ofapproximately 100 to 200 sq. ft. per gallon (2.4 to 4.9 m/l) to the properly prepared surface. Substrateporosity and texture will determine the amount of UNIBASE required to encapsulate the reinforcing fabricor prime the surface. Allow UNIBASE to dry thoroughly prior to topcoating.
