FEEDING BODIES
FUELING SUCCESS
PARTNERS FOR A HEALTHY SUMMER Fare Start This summer we are excited to be continuing our partnership with FareStart, who will be cooking and delivering meals to our Shoreline sites. FareStart is a wonderful job training institution that provides skills for homeless and disadvantaged individuals. They have served over 6 million
meals to people in need in our neighborhoods! They offer a unique but kid friendly menu by combining vegetables into fun and familiar dishes. One meal to note is the delightfully tasty Macaroni and Cheese with Butternut Squash Puree. Kids don’t seem to mind the veggies in FareStart meals!
King County Libraries It’s a wonderful day when the local librarian comes to visit a summer meal
site. We are fortunate to announce that King County Librarians are back with us at Ronald this summer! They will be providing fun activities, educational opportunities as well as bringing back Techlab. We are also lucky recipients of a guest performer from the King County Library System Foundation!

NEWSPAPER LEARNING ACTIVITY
Got a newspaper? Then you have a great learning tool! Why don’t you take
a section of the newspaper and try out these fun activities?
Name a letter and then have your child find five unfamiliar words that
start with that letter in the paper. Look up their definitions and try using
them in sentences!
Try turning a recent family event into a newspaper story. Write a
headline and story and include a picture and caption!
Look at a picture in the paper. Without reading the story, make up your
own! What happened before the photo was taken? What will happen
directly after?
GO FOOD, SLOW FOOD!
At our summer meal sites we make sure to keep kids active and engaged all
summer long. Combining physical activities with food and nutrition
knowledge is one way to keep kids moving as well as combat summer
learning loss.
This game will be played at Ronald
United Methodist Church this
summer! Try it at home with your
kids and any neighborhood
friends. Created by New York Road
Runners.
“Go Food, Slow Food”
Have all kids stand in a line facing the adult in charge of running the game. Review with everyone what makes a “go” food and what makes a “slow” food. A “go” food helps
their bodies play and grow while “slow” foods are full of sugar and fat and will slow their bodies down. While an initial sugar rush can make kids feel excited at first,
it will make them feel tired after a
while. Call out some popular foods switching between “go” and “slow” foods and ask the kids to identify each. Once everyone understands the difference, start calling out more foods in no particular order. When you say a “go” food, the kids run (or skip, hop or
jump) toward you. When you yell out a “slow” food the kids should automatically freeze. If a child moves after a “slow” food is called out or freezes on a “go” food, they must start over at the beginning. The first one to reach you wins!
RECIPE CORNER
Looking for a healthy and kid-
friendly recipe that will utilize
summer vegetables? Look no fur-
ther than these fun Zucchini
Bites, packed with nutrients and
flavor! Recipe from The Best
Homemade Kids’ Snacks on the
Planet by Laura Fuentes.

2 eggs, whisked
1/2 cup onion, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 cup cheddar cheese,

1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 cup marinara / spaghetti

Season the zucchini with a pinch
of salt and place in the middle of
a piece of cheesecloth or a thin

all liquid, wring it out and transfer
to a large bowl.
To the shredded zucchini, add the

Stir till evenly combined.
Scoop the mixture into the mini

until golden. Allow the zucchini
bites to cool slightly before trans-
ferring to a wire rack to cool.
Serve with marinara or your fa-
vorite dipping sauce.
