E lla has always been little. Tiny even. At two and a half years old she stands less than two feet tall, far below average. But what she lacks in size, she makes up for in personality. She is totally fearless. She tackles a set of stairs with the same smile with which she greets new people. Her bright energy lights up everyone around her, and you can’t help but laugh when she does. But Ella’s positive energy belies the long road she and her mother, Elizabeth, have been on. During her pregnancy, Elizabeth was told by doctors that her daughter had very little chance of surviving. At 28 weeks along, she had to undergo an emergency C-section. Ella was born at one pound, nine ounces. She was diagnosed with Craniosynostosis, a congenital defect causing the sutures, or connections between individual skull bones, to close prematurely which can lead to excessive brain pressure and sometimes injury to the brain. Ella spent three months and 13 days in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). When she reached three pounds, two ounces, she was released to go home—the smallest baby to ever be discharged from the NICU at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Virginia. The first few months at home were relatively normal; Ella was healthy and happy. Then one day everything changed. Six-month-old Ella appeared to be having a seizure. She was rushed to the emergency room, and after several scans were performed, it was found that she’d had a stroke. Dr. Nicole Safina, a geneticist, identified that Ella had Primordial Dwarfism, the rarest form of dwarfism in the world. With Elizabeth standing 6’2” tall, the diagnosis was shocking. “The news was very scary. But it now gave us a reason as to why my little girl was so petite, she was a little person,” Elizabeth said. Ella’s results were forwarded to Dr. Gary Steinberg at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, who further diagnosed Ella with Moyamoya. A disease prevalent in patients with primordial dwarfism, Moyamoya results from a blocked artery in the brain and causes strokes and seizures. In October of 2009, the family traveled from their home in Virginia to Stanford to seek treatment—an experience that Elizabeth described as terrifying. Ella underwent several tests, including MRI’s, CT scans and angiograms, in addition to two major surgeries. She was released to go home, but a year and a half later the family returned to California to address Ella’s Craniosynostosis with another surgery which was extremely successful. During their visits, the family has stayed at both local hotels and Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. The opportunity to stay at the House has been a relief, emotionally and financially. Elizabeth explained, “Having a place where you are surrounded with other families who understand, who are going through similar situations, makes this process easier.” A place to cook, a playroom for Ella, and the interaction with the other families all helped to ease the stress. Elizabeth credited the House for “giving hope when hope seemed impossible.” Having Ella has been an absolute blessing for Elizabeth. Dear Ms. Honey,

My whole family is staying at Ronald

McDonald House at Stanford while

my newborn baby sister Isabella is in

the hospital for a few weeks. Now that

school is out we can all be together and I get to visit Isabella.

The best part of being at the House is Camp Ronald McDonald.

My sister, brother and I get to play at camp while mom is at

the hospital and we are having so much fun!

At first I was shy and wasn’t sure I wanted to go. The camp

counselor told me they were all going to a farm with real

animals, so I decided to give it a try. Riley’s Place was so cool

because there were horses and I got to ride the ATV. It was

really hot that day but I didn’t care because it was my first

time on a farm and I didn’t want to leave.

Last week we all took a field trip to see the San Francisco

Giants play. I really liked the baseball game, but my favorite

part of the day was riding in the House van on our way to the

city. My new friend Zach and I got to pick the radio station and

we sat in the back seat and sang the whole way there!

Zach’s sister is also in the hospital and since we’re far from

home where all our friends are, we like to hang out together. The

CLIK room opens early for summer camp and we like to watch

Michael Jackson videos on YouTube. I like his older stuff like

“Black or White” and “Billie Jean,” but “Thriller” is my favorite. We

practice zombie dance moves and I’m getting pretty good at it.

Another thing I like about the House is the people that work

there. When they speak to me in English they call me “Charlie”

and when they speak to me in Spanish, they call me “Carlitos.”

That’s how I like it because my name is different in English and

Spanish.

Thank you for all the fun and especially for the tie-dyed

summer camp t-shirt! I will be happy to go home when Isabella

is better, but I’m glad we can be here together during summer

vacation.

Love,

Charlie (Carlitos)

LETTER FROM CAMP

Left to right: American Idol Finalists Casey Abrams and Paul McDonald pose with the kids during a visit to the House. Versailles and his sister Amirah strike a pose during the Idol visit. Zaylen and older brother Jonathan enjoy the Giants game. Charlie rides the ATV at Riley’s Place.

In a child’s eyes, summer vacation holds endless possibilities and limitless fun. One might assume that the little ones at the House don’t have the same

expectations since they, or their sibling, are facing a serious illness. But this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Even when facing cancer, a child still wants to play and feel normal. Summer break means Summer Camp and a continuous array of activities, field trips and playtime. It is a fantastic opportunity for the kids to just be kids. In Charlie’s letter from camp, he mentioned just two of the fun places the kids have gone. In addition to attending the San Francisco Giants’ game, and their trip to the farm, which was donated by Riley’s Place, the children have visited the Aquarium of the Bay, the Exploratorium, Planet Granite, and the Palo Alto Museum & Zoo. A summer carnival and a day

of swimming were generously sponsored by the Oshman Family JCC of Palo Alto. Our Family Services Department worked hard throughout spring to recruit and train teen volunteers to be Camp counselors. These teens have been energetic, fun and responsible, resulting in a terrific experience for the campers. Not only did the teens help supervise field trips, they also put on activities at the House including cooking

classes and science experiments. Providing a range of experiences and a change of scenery helped the kids take their minds off the medical issues and challenges their families are facing—making for a welcome break.

Camp is an experience no child should miss, and the kids at the House are no exception. We are grateful to the volunteers and donors who have made it possible for our little ones to fully enjoy summer! Enjoy the rest of your summer,

In spite of the threat of rain, sunny weather held up for the 240 golfers who took to the Stanford University and Sharon Heights golf courses at the 2011 Randy Cross Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday,

June 6th. It’s rare for an event in its 27th year to hold any surprises, but as House staff tallied last minute Drawing sales, it became clear that for the first time in the history of the Tournament all the tickets had been sold and distributed! Considering the drawing sales account for a majority of the tournament’s revenue, the news was met with celebration. The outcome was largely due to the concerted efforts of the event’s planning committees, including co-chairs Gregg Davis, Derrick Diaz, Con Freeman, Bob Selig, and Julie Van Gorder, as well as top ticket seller Brad Lyman. Their leadership and persistence, along with the hard work and dedication of over 100 volunteers, culminated in an event of which everyone could be proud. As evening rolled around, Tournament Host Randy Cross joined co-host Brian Murphy of KNBR and nearly 400 supporters for a reception at Rosewood Sand Hill Resort. In addition to enjoying appetizers from Michelin-starred Madera restaurant, guests sipped wine from Heintz Ranch Vineyards and devoured goodies from Nola, Town, and Milagros, of the Avenir Restaurant Group.

The House would especially like to thank the Zafiropoulo Family who aim to make the

greatest impact possible. Their generous donation of a Maserati Quattroporte for the drawing’s Grand Prize is always the highlight of the evening. This year’s lucky winner, Tanya Hartley of Los Altos, was elated upon learning of her good fortune. The drawing sales boosted the event’s

revenue, bringing the net total to more than $350,000.

The 2011 Tournament was dedicated to the memory of Kim Hill—the child who inspired the first

House—who will forever be remembered for the lasting impact she had on families with seriously ill children. If there is one thing that never changes in this Tournament, it’s the importance placed on supporting the kids. The community created at Ronald McDonald House at Stanford fosters a sense of extended family not just among those parents and children who stay there, but also among the staff, volunteers and donors. We share the families’ ups and downs and celebrate their milestones. We take the good with the bad—lending an ear when things are going wrong,

and thrilling in the celebration of an accomplishment. As partners in their

journey towards health, we are all members of an extended family. Thank you for your continued support of the Randy Cross Invitational!

Thank you to Ronald

McDonald House for

doing such an amazing

job! Alex is a 12-year

wouldn’t have made it

without the support of

RMH. You are awesome!

May 26, 2011 – Becca graduates from Horizon High School. We will be forever grateful for your love, support, caring, medical gifts, and care. To you, our heartfelt thanks for being a part of her miracles.

Bob, Chris, Becca & Family

We stayed at the House last year

(May-July) after our baby girl

was born prematurely with a rare

syndrome. She just celebrated her

first birthday, a big milestone.

We have such great memories of

our family’s stay. Thanks again

for making it possible for us to be

together during such tough times.

PASSIONPUT T ING

Part bocce ball tournament, part auction, part Mediterranean feast, the

annual Spring Lamb Barbeque and Bocce Ball Tournament is held each spring at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos. What started nine years ago as a gathering of a group of high school friends has evolved into a major endeavor, raising a combined total of over half a million dollars for the House since its inception. A special thank you to this year’s chairs, Steve and Jan Peat.

To learn more about each of these events, or to create a benefit of your own, please visit www.ronaldhouse.net/event.php.

Group interaction and personal achievement form the foundation

for the annual Team Ronald McDonald House (Team RMH). A comprehensive three-month training program, Team RMH pushes individuals to reach their personal endurance and fundraising goals. Together they will walk and run in the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay on Sunday, November 20th. Appreciation is sent to all participants, supporters, lead sponsor Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and organizers Christina Del Villar, Lisa Young, Ken Seto and Jennifer Babcock.

Imagine driving through 49 of our nation’s 50 states. To most, that trip alone would

be an impossible task. To Dave Schaub, it’s a week on the road. For the second time Dave will collect sponsorships and donations as he criss-crosses the country in seven days in an attempt to beat his previous record of eight days, 16 hours and 48 minutes. How does he keep his focus after being on the road for hours and hours each day? By thinking of the children staying at the House. Combining his love of cars and the House, Dave is making a significant difference in the lives of the families staying here.

Some people fall in love with the mission of Ronald McDonald

House, but don’t have the ability to write a check that is as big

as that love. But that doesn’t stop them from finding ways to

support the House—they create benefit events that unify something

they are passionate about with their desire to give. Some of these

events are small in scope, while others are truly extraordinary. A few

examples of events that “go the distance” are Spring Lamb BBQ,

Team Ronald McDonald House, and 49-in-7 Drivin’ For The Kids.
