There are a few things we are certain of. We know that 70% of families in Canada live in a city without a children’s hospital. We also know that staying at Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon saves a family between $3,000 and $6,000 dollars every month—helping to ease some of the financial and emotional burdens they face. We know our Family Room in Surrey provides an oasis of calm to any parent with a child being treated there. But what we don’t know is what these families would do if there weren’t a House and a Family Room to ease their passage through this difficult time. Thinking about this gives me pause. It makes me reflect on how we have deepened our impact and expanded both our footprint and our service to families over the six years that I have had the privilege of chairing the Board.

Momentum has carried us forward. It continues to push us to look for better ways to serve BC and Yukon families. As an organization, we are fortunate enough to have such talented and deeply

committed Board Directors who share insight, energy and wisdom to help advance RMH BC’s mission while looking towards the next five years with a strategic lens. We also have a remarkable group of staff and volunteers who run programs and events, keep the House running smoothly, and deliver our particular brand of compassionate hospitality to the families who need us.

Behind all of these people are our donors. These are our champions—thousands of them—who give to the organization in a way that is meaningful to them and priceless to us. Without them, there would be no Ronald McDonald House. As you read through this year’s report, know that your contribution has made a significant difference and provided a place of hope, comfort and care to moms, dads, and kids from 212 communities across BC and the Yukon.

Uncover CourageMeet the Ireton Family

Like most families, the Iretons never expected to stay at a Ronald McDonald House. In August 2018, Adam and Kristen Ireton took their 3-year-old son, Weston, to the doctor. They were expecting to get some antibiotics and head home. Instead, they were told to pack a bag. Weston had leukemia and they needed to fly to Vancouver that very day.

In Vancouver, the family learned that they would need to juggle months of treatment for Weston with caring for his older brother, Beckett, making arrangements for the family dog and running their business back home in Port Hardy. They were miles from home and only had what they were able to fit in a suitcase. This was a reality they had not envisioned.

At Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon, they found help that they didn’t even know to ask for during their most difficult times. Programs such as Family Meals helped reduce stress, and they gained strength from being around other families who understood their new normal. “Being around people in the same scenario, at different stages of the same treatment, is incredibly helpful,” replied Adam when asked about the House. “You can have a conversation without having to explain everything.”

For Weston and Beckett, the House became a place where they could take a break from being sick and just have fun as a family. “We spend half our lives in the toy room,” said Adam, laughing. Any time Weston is asked where he wants to go next, the answer is always the same: “The toy room!”
