Romans 11:19-20 Thou wilt say then, The branches [Jews]

were broken off, that I (Gentiles) might be graffed in. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not high-minded, but fear: 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest He also spare not thee.

2

Was Israel made to stumble to opento open a door of opportunity for usus (GentilesGentiles) to be saved?

No; they were broken off because of unbeliefbecause of unbelief.

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in His goodness: other-wise thou also shalt be cut off.

3

Paul is notnot speaking of the salvation of an individualindividual who has put his faithput his faith in God

through Jesus Christ.

He shall nevernever be cut off!

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God:

4

God is severe toward those who rejectreject His Son, refusingrefusing to believe in Him as Savior and Lord.

They will be cast into a burning lake of firelake of fire for eternaleternal damnation.

But God's GoodnessGod's Goodness is eternal toward those who receivereceive His Son, Jesus Christ, as

Savior and LordSavior and Lord..

The “olive tree” is not the church; it is the spiritual stock spiritual stock of Abrahamof Abraham. Believing Gentiles are included in that sphere of blessing so that in the Church Age bothboth Jews and Gentiles are in Christ’s body. Yet someday Israel as a whole will turn to Christ. This passage does not teach that the national promises to Israel have been abrogated (revoked) and are now being fulfilled by the church. This idea, taught by amillenarians, is foreign to Paul’s point, for he said Israel’s fall is temporary. While believing Gentiles share in the blessings of the Abrahamic Covenant as Abraham’s spiritual children, they do not permanently replace Israel as the heirs of God’s promises.

24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?

7

Normally a branch of a cultivated olive tree is grafted into a wild olive tree, the opposite of what Paul spoke of here. But he knew that grafting the wild into the cultivated was not the norm (though it was done), for he said it was “contrary to nature”

25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in partin part is happened to Israel, untiluntil the fullness of the Gentiles be come in.

8

Here are two specific facts about Israel’s hardening: (a) it is partial, “in part” (because throughout this time “there is a remnant chosen by grace remnant chosen by grace,” , and (b) it is temporary (because it will end when God’s sover-eignly chosen number of Gentiles has been saved.

26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 27 For this is My covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. 28 As concerning the Gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes. 29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: 31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. 32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon all.
