SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FEBRUARY 23, 2020 First Reading: Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18 The Lord urges Moses to tell the Israelite Community to love their neighbors as themselves. They should bear no grudge or hatred against another.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:16-23 Paul, once again, reminds the Corinthians that they are the temple of God, and, as such, must avoid internal disputes and wrangling. He tries to make them realize that they belong to Christ and that the Spirit of God dwells within them.

Gospel: Matthew 5:38-48 In this part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus exhorts his followers to do an extraordinary thing — to love their enemies and to pray for their oppressors. He reminds them that there is nothing laudatory in loving those who love them for even the “pagans” do this. He urges them to “turn the other cheek” and to “walk the extra mile

FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS

DRIVE Sunday, February

23rd – Sunday, March 1st

Supporting those who are in need comes rather naturally to us, here at Saint Aedan’s, because we, as a parish family, sponsor a year-round food pantry. We realize that people need to eat every day, every week, every month of the year. Your donations of food will help provide for the needy individuals and families we support here at our local parish as well as the Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland (CCCSR) food pantry located in North Rockland. Both pantries will share in the food donations you bring here to church. Once again, we are calling on everyone to Feed Our Neighbors and respond to the serious need we are facing right here in our own local community. During this special week, every individual and household in our parish is invited to join with their friends and neighbors in helping to feed the hungry of our local town as well as Rockland County communities. How can we do this? FEED THE BIG WHITE BOX. Bring non-perishable foods to our Feeding Our Neighbors COLLECTION BOX which will be located in our church vestibule. . The children in our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) are also invited to participate in this effort. Christ reminds all of us young and old, to respond to His message “When you fed or clothed my needy brothers and sisters, that you did unto me.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR CATHOLICS

Time for us to prayerfully consider our spiritual preparations for the season of Lent

which begins this week. ASH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26TH

ABSTINENCE forbids the eating of meat. Abstinence obliges from the 14th birthday throughout one’s life. All Fridays of Lent are days of

abstinence from meat. FASTING prescribes that only one full meal a day be taken. Two smaller meals may be taken to maintain strength but these taken together should not equal another full meal. Fasting obliges from the 18th to the 59th birthday. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the two days of Fast AND Abstinence from meat. There is a serious obligation for Catholics to observe these penitential practices in a substantial way. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause for excuse. Lent, in a very special way, points out that we are pilgrims on a lifelong journey of faith. For seven weeks we walk with Christ, in response to His invitation, “Let us go up to Jerusalem”. The penances, the fasting, and all the other aspects of Lent are the hardships of the journey.

PASTA WITH THE PARISH NIGHTS ALL FRIDAY EVENINGS DURING LENT

PLEASE JOIN US! CATCH OF THE DAY WILL ALSO BE

AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT. In order to help keep the cost of this event affordable for everyone, we will be asking the same amount we do for our monthly pancake breakfasts - $3.00 seniors, $5.00 singles couples $8 and just $15.00 for a family with young children. (Add the delicious catch of the day dish for a small additional charge.) Following dinner, please join us over in the church for our Stations of the Cross beginning at 7:30 p.m. So, please allow us to care for both “body and soul” this Lent by participating in this parish family meal followed by the Stations of the Cross. It would REALLY help if you RSVP to our parish office 735-7405 So, beginning with the Friday evening following Ash Wednesday, February 28th, you are invited to come out and join with your fellow parishioners to share in a delicious meatless pasta dinner served right here in our gym. The dinners, served from 6:00 – 7:15 p.m., will feature salad, meatless pasta, rolls & butter, soft drink, coffee/tea and dessert.

GOOD COUNSEL HOME FOR MOTHERS

The home, which helps single mothers and babies since1985, was founded by the late Father Benedict

Groeschel, CFR. The home now needs our help. Through the continued goodness of generous Catholics and the community at large, this wonderful organization provides food, clothing, diapers, housing -- counseling training, and other support -- and most of all, the tangible touch of God's love and mercy for a young mother.
