It is intended to provide general information about the subject matter covered.

Dear Friends,

Spring signifies growth and we certainly are growing!

Division 6 opened the brand new Kiwanis Club of Kimball-Banner County. Congratulations to Lieutenant Governor, Derek Manley and his team!

As many of you know, our District hosted a membership “Mega Blitz” earlier this month in the Denver region. More than 50 volunteers from all over the Kiwanis world, includ-ing dedicated volunteers from our Rocky Mountain District, ventured into six different areas, sharing Kiwanis and our mission to impact their communities through service. We spoke to nearly 200 people, some of whom had heard of Kiwanis and others who had not.

Almost everyone was very receptive.

We met several past Key Club members, all of them eager to hear that their Kiwanis family was reaching out. It was a whirlwind 4 days but we were able to welcome 3 new Clubs to our District that week and still working to open 2 to 3 more in the coming few weeks.

It’s no secret that the 2017-18 year is a year focused on new club growth in our organization. At the end of March, Kiwanis was up to 147 new clubs internationally. This is the most we’ve seen in

recent history. In 2001-02 a total 116 clubs were opened; during 2014-15, 77 clubs; 2015-16, 43 clubs; 2016-17, 76 clubs. We’re only half way through the Kiwanis year!

Your Rocky Mountain District leadership is dedicated to finishing this year strong not only in new club growth, but strengthening existing membership! So far, existing Rocky Mountain clubs have added 182 members!

New club openings paired with growth in our current clubs ensures that we are creating a Kiwanis legacy for generations of kids to come!

A busy time at your Rocky Mountain District Foundation We have increased donation opportunities, created a social media page and added an experienced Kiwanian to our team. This year our district convention fundraiser will be a bowling tournament. I promise it will be fun and packed with laughs, so please join us. Financially, the Kiwanis District Foundation depends on your donations. Each and every contribution matters.

We welcome our new board member, Mike Keim. Mike served as Lieutenant Governor for Division 1, Casper Wyoming, for ten years and brings valuable experience to the table. We are happy to have Mike join us at the Foundation. Our newest donation program is Vehicles for Charities. Donating your vehicle is as easy as making a phone call to the Foundation. This type of gift will provide a tax benefit while serving the needs of the children in the district. The Foundation is now registered to accept donations for Colorado Gives Day in December. This is a great opportunity for Kiwanians to ask their family, friends and business community to contribute to the Foundation and further impact the lives of the children.

We created a Facebook page which makes it easier to stay engaged in our activities. You can find us at by entering RMD Kiwanis Foundation in your Facebook search bar. Please like and share our page with all your friends.

RMD Kiwanis Foundation Bowling Tournament

At the District Convention Friday August 10, 2018

Hello Rocky Mountain District!

Spring has arrived in Colorado! I’ve had the great opportunity to visit several clubs this past month and hear about the impact Kiwanis is making in their communities. The Children of the Rocky Mountain District are definitely being served by Kiwanians.

Lt Governor training was held April 8, 2018, with Governor-Elect Tim Sheppard leading a well prepared training of the board. Welcome and

thank you to Mike McDill, Glenwood Springs, who has stepped in

immediately to fill the Division 8 Lt Governor vacancy.

I am constantly surprised and humbled by the level of club commitment to the care and feeding of US. My latest kudos are for Division 2. Under

the leadership of Ann Stelling, the District Convention is being planned

and organized, promising to be a great event. Registration opens in June so watch your emails for the invitation to register.

Speaking of convention, remember that this is also the RMD Kiwanis Foundation Annual Meeting, luncheon, silent auction, and bowling tour-

nament. Division 2 and Foundation President Bob O’Connor are

shaking things up this year - the fun-raiser is a Bowling Tournament!

Margie Martinez, Greeley club has taken the lead on this event. Get

your teams of 6 together and start practicing. If you are lucky, you may

get Past Governor Kathy Lee on your team - rumor has it she knows a

thing or two about bowling.

Membership - the need for more hands to do the work - is the focus for

the next several years. Governor Hayley Suppes & her RMD team

partnered with Kiwanians from across the country April 8 - 12 to share, educate and encourage people to become Kiwanians. Three new clubs were formed and several more clubs are in the works.

Love It… Live It… Share It… As we enter our second century of service, there is a renewed energy with the I-PLAN, Club Building &

Strengthening since #kidsneedkiwanis!

Foundation Board Awards Key Club Scholarships

Due to increased funding from Kiwanis Children’s Fund, the RMD Foundation was able to award 4 Key Club Scholarships this year, totaling $3000.

CONGRATULATIONS & GOOD LUCK TO THESE KEY CLUB STUDENTS

5

Colton Taylor $500. Colton is a senior at Glenwood Springs High School with a GPA of 4.0. Colton plans to attend Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Colton took the lead with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, for which the school raised $3,000. Colton's teacher said Colton has been one of the most successful student leaders at GSHS and his accomplishments will have a long-standing impact on years to come at GSHS.

Madeline Harding $500. Madeline is a senior at Glenwood Springs High School with a GPA of 4.0. She has not yet decided which college she will attend in the fall. The faculty advisor had this quote to say about Madeline: Madeline is certainly ready to embrace the challenge and growth col-lege will provide her. Her combination of creative ways to examine the world, her strong leadership abilities, ability to get along with others and a tenaciously large desire to improve lives ensures that Miss Harding will do something great with her life.

Krista McAllister $1,000. Krista is a senior at Frontier Academy, Greeley with a GPA of 4.4. She plans to attend Colorado State University in Fort Collins seeking a degree in education, performance arts and/or communications. She has been a Key Club member all 4 years of high school. Krista pro-vided an impressive resume that included numerous service projects she has helped with. One such project was one she co-founded; a community service organization called IMPACT- to make a posi-tive impact in our community and world by doing a variety of projects for people in need. Krista's faculty advisor said this: Krista has many outstanding qualities. She is a hard worker and the quali-ty of her work is consistently excellent. She is bright, enthusiastic, and a pleasure to work with, but above all she is humble and focused on others and improving the world around her.

Caitlyn Olsen $1,000. Caitlyn is a senior at Frontier Academy, Greeley with a GPA of 4.1. She plans to attend the University of Denver. She has been a Key Club member all 4 years of high school. She served as Key Club vice president her junior year and president her senior year. The faculty advisor had this quote to say about Caitlyn: I have encountered very few students whom I can unequivocally describe as "the whole package", but Caitlyn Olson is just such a young woman. She is a capable leader, a skilled athlete, a dedicated servant, a diligent student and a kind friend.

Foundation Board Grant Awards

At the April 7, 2018 Foundation Board Meeting, the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation awarded $8,500 in grants.

Wheatland Kiwanis Club $1500: Wyoming Shoe and Socks. The purpose of this grant will help provide 100 pairs of shoes for 200 feet! Platte County, Wyoming is an underserved county in that we have the third highest percentage of children without health insurance, and single-parent families living in poverty. As of this writing there are 243 families receiving assistance from the Department of Family Services (DFS). DFS does provide vouchers to the local thrift store. The our goal is to make sure that children who are in need have a brand-new pair of shoes and socks.

District Key Club $2500: District Convention Funding Support. The purpose of the funding Was to help provide for the entertainment and speaker portions of the annual Key Club District Convention.

Arvada-Jefferson Kiwanis Club $1500: The Arvada High School Little Theater Project. Arvada High School has a need for a small performance and presentation space to benefit student learning. By creating such a space, the students receive a professional arena to use for presentations and business collaborative discussions, much as they would do in the real world. The theater would give a home to many entities such as small performing groups, classroom presentations to support our project-based learning (PBL), classroom team-building and community building activities. Additionally, the space would support the collaborative theater work being done between students in our high school and in the feeder schools.

Arvada-Jefferson Club $500: Outdoor Lab Foundation Student Intern Program. This program funds student interns to supporting the work at our Outdoor Lab schools. The interns work directly with the sixth-graders at the Outdoor Lab Schools.

Alameda West Club $2500: Playscape at Bear Creek Lake Park. The Kiwanis Club of Alameda West is partnering with the City of Lakewood to develop a Playscape at Bear Creek Lake Park. A Playscape is a naturally occurring play area where children are encouraged to use creativity and critical thinking skills in their play. The Bear Creek Lake Park Playscape (BCLPP) will provide an innovative approach for all children that encourages creativity and thinking skills in play as well as developing better physical health for children of all abilities.

Poudre Golden K presented Project Smile with a check for $13,000.

Project Smile helps meet an urgent need - lack of dental care, and lack of vision correction for many children - by in-school screenings and follow up with needed treatment by local dental and vision professionals, and a host of volunteers.

Our goal is to eventually provide services for every child in Poudre School District that needs dental and vision treatment.

Studies have proven that proper dental care eliminates tooth aches and pains which can lead to lack of focus, decreased learning ability and hunger during the child’s lifetime. We want to eliminate the root cause of this pain by providing essential dental care to children in need that don’t otherwise have access without Project Smile. Vision and learning are intimately related. Experts indicate that roughly 80 percent of what a child learns in school is information that is presented visually. So good vision is essential for students of all ages to reach their full academic potential. These children are the future of our community and it is our responsibility to take care of them.

Laramie Middle School social studies teacher Nick Bauman was presented the Kiwanis Club Outstanding Teaching and Leadership Award on March 20 for making classes more fun and personalized to student needs. “The Kiwanis Club in Laramie gives out this award three times a year to teachers who have made significant contributions to children, school and community,” said LMS Builders Club advisor Carmen Leonard. Did you miss your opportunity to meet your super hero? The Kiwanis Club of Alamosa held the Superhero Meet & Greet on January 27th for children to meet Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Supergirl.

Frederick High School Senior and District 11 Key Club Lt. Governor Megan Hartley, took part in the St Vrain Unified Basketball tournament. Unified Basketball teams from across the St Vrain school district gathered together on March 3 in a unique tournament that partners special needs students and traditional students while having fun.

The unified basketball team is entirely volunteer-based. Megan partners with a special education kid once a week for 30 minutes where they practice and learn to work together and then get to play against other schools.

Division 11 is very proud of Megan and her endless desire to give back to her school, community, students with special needs and everyone else that she meets.

New Fund Raiser for the RMD Kiwanis Foundation

Form your team of 6 and join us for a fun filled afternoon in Greeley on August 10th, following the Foundation Annual Meeting & Luncheon. Don’t trust yourself to keep the ball out of the gutter? Have fun with the cheering squad (aka the heckler group) to root your team on! Details coming to your in-box soon!

At the Kiwanis Children’s Fund, we are dedicated to serving the children of the world. In fact, it’s our mission. You are a Kiwanian, so you share that dedication.

Your support to the Kiwanis Children's Fund helps support Rocky Mountain District. District grants come back as a percentage of the total commitment from our district. This year, we received $3776 to support our District Service Project and for Key Club Scholarships. THANK YOU for your role in making that grant possible.

Since 1940, the Kiwanis Children’s Fund has helped Kiwanians extend their impact in their own hometowns and around the world. We do this by developing resources that transform the goodwill and vision of Kiwanians into programs that serve the children of the world. One way we make this happen is the Club Grant program.

For the Children’s Fund, a grant does more than fill a funding gap. It’s a collaboration. Grant funding helps address an unmet need of children through a project that provides long-term benefits sustained by a club. Clubs interested in applying for a grant should review the program material carefully to learn about the Kiwanis Children’s Fund as a potential funding partner.

Successfully applying for a club grant requires thoughtful preparation and thorough attention to the program’s criteria. The keys to preparing a successful grant application can be found in our Guide to Club Grants. This document walks you through each step of the grant process—providing instructions, detailed background information, important dates, helpful tips and links to additional resources.

The next club grant deadline is fast approaching. Please submit your club's Letter of Inquiry online by June 1. Now is the perfect time to begin assessing your community’s needs and drafting your application.

Attending the 2018 Kiwanis International Convention in Las Vegas? Stop by the booth and attend workshops on club foundations, fundraising, club grants and more. Read about all our convention activities here.

It’s never too early to consider ways to recognize club leaders and notable members. Consider recognizing an individual with a George F. Hixson or Walter Zeller Fellowship gift to the Children’s Fund.

Did you know that The Eliminate Project is one of our five causes? We have raised over US$78 million in paid gifts of US$110 in pledges. But mothers and babies are still at risk in 15 countries. Together, we will finish the fight. If your club is new to The Eliminate Project, consider making a pledge to save lives. And if you have made a pledge, can your club increase its support?
