the real rocks and minerals that we have in the classroom. Finally, answer the questions your
teacher asks.
Types of rocks
Limestone.
It is a soft rock which can
be white, grey or cream.
It is formed from a mineral
called calcite.
It sometimes contains
fossils which are the
remains of living things
from long ago.

It is a hard rock which is
usually dark grey or black.
The minerals, it is made of,
are arranged in thin layers.

ACTIVITY 5:
Look at the picture which shows the layers of the geosphere and read the materials it is formed
of.
The teacher hands out the posters of the three layers of the geosphere to three students. The
rest of the classroom has the composition of the different layers and they put behind the right
classmate. Finally, they make their own Earth with its layers.

CORE MANTLE CRUST
Core is made of iron with minor amounts of nickel, and lies at the center of the Earth.
Mantle is made of iron-magnesium silicates and surrounds the core. The mantle makes up the bulk of the Earth.
Crust occurs as two distinct types, oceanic crust and continental crust. Both types of crust are lighter (less dense) and contain more silica than the mantle.

STEPS
1. Draw the hydrosphere and the geosphere. Then, colour the hydrosphere in blue and the geosphere in green.

three layers in a card.

Make a power point about the characteristics of the different rocks we have studied in the
session and present it to the class. Dont forget to include a final slide with questions for your
classmates.

eroded the
rock.
3 Rivers transported
the fragments of
rocks.
4 The fragments of rock were
deposited at the bottom of
the sea as sediment.

6 de Primaria: Rocks and minerals 13

ACTIVITY 2:
Listen to the audio and read:
ROCKS ON THE EARTHS SURFACE
1. Firstly, rocks on the Earths surface break and erode for different reasons. For example:
Rain and wind can, very slowly over long periods of time, break off small pieces of rocks.
2. Then, fragments of rock can be transported to other places. Rivers transport fragments
of rocks and deposit them at the bottom of lakes and seas. These deposits are called
sediments.
3. Finally, the sediment at the bottom of lakes and seas, forms layers. The deeper layers are
squashed by the weight of the layers on top of them. Very slowly, the sediment in the
deeper layers forms rocks. These rocks are called sedimentary rocks. Clay is a
sedimentary rock.
Millions of years ago:
1- The mountains were very high.
2- Rain slowly eroded the rock.
3- Rivers transported the fragments of rocks.
4- The fragments of rocks were deposited at the bottom of the sea as sediment.

SESSION 3
ACTIVITY 1:
Look at the words in the word cloud.
6 de Primaria: Rocks and minerals 18
-
ACTIVITY 2:
Listen to the audio and read the following text:
The heat, inside the Earth, melts rocks. These melted rocks can form:
volcanoes and earthquakes.
Volcanoes:
Melted rock inside the Earth is called magma. Magma rises to the Earths surface,
through cracks in the Earths crust. When it reaches the surface it forms a
volcano.
Magma that comes out of a volcano is called lava. On the surface, lava cools down
and solidifies. It forms rocks like basalt. Sometimes magma does not reach the
Earths surface. It cools down and solidifies inside the Earths crust. This forms
rocks like granite.
Ash and gasses also come out of volcanoes. When lava, ash and gasses come out of
a volcano it is called a volcanic eruption.
6 de Primaria: Rocks and minerals 19
-
Earthquakes:
The interior of the Earth contains a lot of heat energy. This energy can cause the
movement of huge masses of rock.
If the masses of rock break when they move, they can cause tremors on the
Earths surface, called earthquakes.
Volcanoes and earthquakes change landscapes quickly and violently.
Lava and ash from volcanic eruptions cover the area around the opening of the
volcano. Over time they form a hill or mountain.
In earthquakes, some areas of land sink, others rise, and sometimes rivers
change their course.
6 de Primaria: Rocks and minerals 20
-
ACTIVITY 3:
Write true or false. Then, correct the false sentences orally in the classroom.
SENTENCES TRUE FALSE
A. Magma is melted rocks.
B. Only magma comes out of a volcano.
C. Earthquakes are tremors deep inside the Earth.
D. Volcanoes and earthquakes can change landscapes quickly and violently.
ACTIVITY 4:
Match the words with the definitions and copy them in your notebook.
WORDS
DEFINITIONS
VOLCANO:
They are tremors on the Earths
surface caused by the heat energy
inside the Earth.
LAVA:
When lava, ash and gasses come
out of a volcano.
MAGMA:
It is melted rock inside the Earth.
VOLCANIC ERUPTION:
Rocks formed inside the Earths
crust.
BASALT:
An opening in the Earths surface
or crust, which allows hot magma,
volcanic ash and gasses to escape
from below the surface.
GRANITE:
Magma that comes out of a
volcano.
EARTHQUAKES:
Rocks formed on the surface, when
lava cools and solidifies.

ACTIVITY 5:
Work in pairs. Look at these two cards (1 and 2) and try to put the sentences in the right order.
Then, write how a volcano is formed in your notebook.
CARD 1
Magma reaches the Earths surface.
The lava cools down and forms rocks
like basalt.
Rocks inside the Earth melt because of
the heat.
CARD 2
Magma comes out of the volcano with
ash and gasses.
Magma rises to the Earths surface
through gaps in the crust.

has occurred. If not, find out information about an earthquake in a different part of the world.
Then, complete the following information:
