Technical Information

Reflective, highly polished finishesROCKCOTE Venetian Plaster delivers stunning polished finishes for homes, retail and commercial projects.Equally suited to an architecturally designed home or a lavish hotel, Venetian Plaster delivers the highest polished finish available with ROCKCOTE products.

Creative artisans can achieve a range of special effects with Venetian Plaster including:

› High polished concrete look

› Striking marbled finish

› A subtle, dreamy appearance

Venetian Plaster is especially useful for columns and walls where the appearance of marble is sought and can achieve the light-reflective appearance of marble without the weight.

The use of Venetian Plaster in a commercial or retail project offers a unique way to highlight products against a mirrored finish wall. This also creates the illusion of a larger, more open space.

What is Venetian Plaster?Natural lime plasters have been used as finishing materials for centuries by all major civilisations. The Greeks, Romans, Japanese and many others have traditions of using lime plasters for fine decorative finishes, revered for their distinctive beauty. The Roman Empire developed Venetian Plasters to replicate the look of expensive stones such as marble. The original materials and processes were handed down from generation to generation and from master artisans to apprentices.

ROCKCOTE Venetian Plaster captures the elegance of a traditional European finish and brings it into the modern era. Our Venetian Plaster is a genuine lime product, supplied mixed as a ready to use wet plaster, and applied using the same techniques as traditional artisans.

Unlike synthetic products that deliver a faux Venetian Plaster finish, ROCKCOTE Venetian Plaster is an authentic Venetian Plaster. This completely natural product is non-toxic and contains no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), helping to improve indoor air quality. It is also naturally mould resistant.

Functional Finishes

Can Venetian Plaster be used to achieve a lustre finish instead of a mirror finish?Due to the nature of Venetian Plaster it will polish to a mirror finish. If a lustre finish is sought, ROCKCOTE recommends using Velvetina, Otsumigaki or Marrakesh.

How is Venetian Plaster applied?Venetian Plaster is applied in two very thin coats, with a trowel. The more coats applied, the higher the polish that can be achieved.

Does the shine come from the Venetian Plaster or the Carnauba Wax applied over the top?The shine is developed by working the Venetian Plaster and polishing as it dries. The more coats of Venetian Plaster applied, the greater the polish. Using the correct trowels is also important in achieving a mirror finish.

Is Venetian Plaster suitable for wet areas?Venetian Plaster is suitable for splashbacks and walls in wet areas but not suitable for shower walls or areas where water pools such as floors, shower floors and bathtubs.

Is Venetian Plaster suitable for a shower recess? No, Venetian Plaster is not recommended for this application. ROCKCOTE would suggest the use of Marrakesh for this purpose.

Are there restrictions to where Venetian Plaster can be used externally?Venetian Plaster is not suitable for areas requiring a flexible membrane ie. single skin masonry, FC sheeting, magnesium board or lightweight EPS. If you are not certain about your substrate please contact ROCKCOTE technical or speak to your artisan.

Exterior Venetian Plaster finishes will change over time due to exposure to the external elements. This ageing process may be slowed by the application of ROCKCOTE Repel or ROCKCOTE Clearcote which will change the look of the finish.

ROCKCOTE recommends ensuring clients sign off samples to ensure all parties agree on aesthetics before the project begins, and all parties accept that aesthetics may change over time.

Does Venetian Plaster need to be sealed with Carnauba Wax?Carnauba Wax helps to protect the Venetian Plaster and is recommended over Venetian Plaster for all projects. For feature walls in low traffic areas such as bedrooms or lounge rooms, the application of Carnauba Wax is not essential but is highly recommended.

How often does the Carnauba Wax need to be reapplied? The initial application of Carnauba Wax for interior surfaces should last a few years depending on the area to which it is applied. Recoating with Carnauba Wax is usually required after two years. Cleaning and re-sealing can be carried out by the property owner. Refurbishment or repair needs to be undertaken by an Artisan.

How are paintings or wall hangings affixed to a Venetian Plaster surface? The strength to hold any wall hangings will need to come from the wall, not the Venetian Plaster. To add nails or screws to the wall to hang pictures, it is best to pre drill the hole into the cured Venetian Plaster first before tapping the nail in to reduce the risk of cracking

Can Venetian Plaster be used on a bench top or splashback?Venetian Plaster is not recommended for use on a bench top surface but can be used as a splashback.

Can Venetian Plaster be used on a water feature? No, Venetian Plaster is not suitable for use for areas where water pools.

What colours are available?Refer to the information on Venetian Plaster and Colour on page 6. The unique finish of Venetian Plaster shows a number of tone differences giving the illusion of different colours.

Is ROCKCOTE Venetian Plaster suitable for DIY application?Working with traditional materials requires more knowledge and skill than most conventional products. ROCKCOTE recommends that Venetian Plaster be applied by a licensed tradesperson who has completed all the required steps to become a ROCKCOTE Polished or Master Artisan.

ROCKCOTE Venetian Plaster Care and Maintenance GuideVenetian Plaster is easy to keep clean and maintain. By following some basic guidelines, the surface will continue to look beautiful for many years to come.

Cleaning and maintenanceIt’s important to remember that Venetian Plaster is made from natural elements from the earth and can be damaged if the correct cleaning procedure is not followed.

Being a polished finish, Venetian Plaster will not collect dust like many other modern surfaces. If any light dust appears, wipe gently with a dusting cloth without using any water or chemicals.

Do not use bleach, mould removers or any other store-bought chemical cleaners on the surface. This can bleach the surface and eat into the product.

To remove any grime, simply add a small amount of Black Olive Soap to some clean water and apply with a soft sponge. Do not use scourers or other harsh applicators to apply any cleaning products. Use a soft applicator so you don’t scratch the surface; a hand glove for car washing, or a natural sea sponge is perfect.

For more stubborn stains, contact ROCKCOTE or the artisan who completed the work for guidance.

Preserving the surface Best practice is to protect the walls with ROCKCOTE Carnauba Wax, to create a barrier on the Venetian Plaster and help it resist exposure to grime and marks.

Carnauba Wax can be applied to the finish every couple of years to maintain the level of protection needed to resist staining. Carnauba Wax is available from ROCKCOTE and can be applied by the property owner by spraying a mist on the surface and rubbing it with a soft cloth or sponge.

Dealing with unexpected problemsIf there are any unexpected problems and the Venetian Plaster needs retouching, it is important any rectification or repair work is completed by the artisan who applied the Venetian Plaster. They’ll be able to advise the best options and make repairs if necessary.
