Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross is again

heading to the Pro Bowl.

Gross was one of three offensive tackles selected

to represent the NFC in the game, which will be

played the Sunday before the Super Bowl for the

second consecutive season. The Pro Bowl will kick

off January 30th at 7 p.m. from Aloha Stadium in

Honolulu, Hawaii, and will be broadcast by FOX.

Gross was selected for the second time in three

seasons. If not for an injury, he might well be

celebrating his third consecutive selection.

Gross made the Pro Bowl team for the first time

following the 2008 season and was well on his

way to a second straight honor last season before

when he suffered a broken right tibia and fibula

that sent him to injured reserve.

He bounced back from the injury, however,

to play in every game this season and was the

Panthers’ 2010 recipient of the Ed Block Courage

Award.

The Panthers struggled to score points last

season, but Gross is part of the reason they still

managed to rank 13th in the NFL with 115.4

rushing yards per game.

“Although this seAson DiD not go the wAy Anyone hopeD it woulD, i’m honoreD to be selecteD to the pro bowl,” gross sAiD. “it’s been A long 12 months coming bAck from A mAjor injury, AnD to be selecteD to the pro bowl by my peers is such An honor. i feel very blesseD.”

Gross, in his eighth season out of the University

of Utah, was Carolina’s first-round pick - No. 8

overall - in the 2003 NFL Draft.

The Panthers have now had at least one Pro

Bowl selection in 14 of their 16 seasons. They

didn’t have a player selected in 2007 or in their

inaugural season of 1995.

By Charlie Dayton

Page 13: Roar 12.5

CAROLINA PANTHERS V.12.5/ 1110 / www.panthers.com

the debate became which is the more impressive streak, favre’s 297 games in football or cal ripken’s 2,632 game baseball streak.

while others can make that decision, consider that favre’s streak began three years before the panthers even took the field in 1995. since that time, the difficulty of compiling a consecutive streak of any nature has become evident.

the carolina record for consecutive starts of 91 is not quite a third of the way to favre’s mark. it was set by mike minter and ended with his retirement in 2007. jordan gross played his first 84 games in the league without missing and a game and was poised to break minter’s mark when he suffered a concussion against Atlanta in 2008 and missed a game.

julius peppers started 79 straight games before sitting out the Dallas game in 2007 and jake Delhomme started 59 in a row before a thumb injury forced him to the sidelines late in the 2006 season.

ironically, Delhomme was on the field when beason passed him at cleveland in november. there were a couple weeks when beason was in question as he missed two practice days before the Atlanta game at home, but played on sunday.

After Delhomme’s 59 straight starts, the most a player has been able to reach is 48, which five players have attained.

forty-eight games is three straight years of starting and doesn’t sound

like a lot, but it requires a combination of skill, toughness , and luck that does not come together as often as one might think. cornerback eric Davis reached 48 games and would have been at 50 if a concussion had not sidelined him two games at the end of the ’97 season. those were the only two games he missed in five seasons with the panthers.

mills started every game in his three seasons as a panthers player before retiring, while linebacker michael barrow, safety Deon grant, and tackle todd steussie also reached 48 before signing with other teams.

three different years chris gamble has missed one game in a season due to injury, otherwise his streak could have been near the top.

the ‘otherwise’ is what makes accumulating a streak so difficult. first a player has to be good enough that the coach wants him starting week after week. secondly, he has to have the toughness to play through discomfort, but in the end, it is the medical staff, not the player who makes the call on his readiness.

finally, he has to be lucky.

“so many things can knock you out for a game,” says beason. “in football, it is hard to put together a long streak without good luck.”

“SO MANy ThINGS CAN KNOCK yOU OUT FOR A GAME,” SAyS BEASON. “IN FOOTBALL, IT IS hARd TO PUT TOGEThER A LONG STREAK WIThOUT GOOd LUCK.”

while beason is conscious of his consecutive game starting streak, he takes the most pride in another streak: being on the field for every defensive play over three years.

“i know no other defensive player in the nfc south did that,” says jon. “that’s a streak that not many people know about, but means a lot to me.”

has there ever been a close call?

“WhEN WE WERE PLAyING ARIzONA IN 2008, I dISLOCATEd SOMEThING IN My ARM, BUT WAS ABLE TO POP IT BACK IN BEFORE ThE NEXT PLAy.”on that next play, beason intercepted a pass in the carolina red zone which helped preserve a panthers victory.

Unfortunately his streak came to an end at Pittsburgh when the Steelers went into a five man formation that forced Beason off the field.

UUniverSoul Circus set the stage where generations of family could come together and enjoy each other dancing in the aisles and singing songs that span the last six decades from Motown classics to today’s Top 40.

At UniverSoul Circus guests witnessed the feats of world class acts like Chinese aerialists performing a synchronized aerial dance never seen before in the United States; the hottest stunt basketball acrodunk players in the world from Holland and Belgium; an entourage of contortionists bend and twist their bodies beyond human limits; and a furious tiger act. Whether it was high flying trampoline shenanigans; teeterboard maneuvers or walking on the wild side more than twenty feet above the ring on a razor sharp piece of wire, UniverSoul Circus offered an interactive experience

like none other. At UniverSoul Circus the audience is always part of the show and fans are forewarned because under the Big Top of hip hop you never know when you might wind up in the center ring—doing your thing—with a Panther (of the Carolina variety).

Linebacker Thomas Davis was on hand for UniverSoul’s opening night in Charlotte. His “Defending Dreams Foundation” kids got to experience the excitement and even got elephant rides during intermission courtesy of Thomas. Linebacker Jon Beason, safety Charles Godfrey and some YMCA kids joined the circus one evening as well. Jon assisted a clown with his magic trick, which included volunteers from the audience. Charles welcomed those in attendance from the top of an elephant, which is also what defensive end Everette Brown did on another night. Defensive tackles Ed Johnson and Corvey Irvin joined in the fun and the soul train line and cornerback Richard Marshall with “A Better World” kids enjoyed the death defying acts, cotton candy and an amazing night under the big top.

100 chefs / cooking 24/7 / 73,000 people

Q&A with Chef John

how did you develop a passion for cooking? My grandfather was a great cook and I always followed him around. Between that and my Mom’s cookies, this is what I wanted to do.

where did you begin your cooking career and how did you end up at Bank of america Stadium? I started in my hometown of Stonington, CT shucking clams. After that, I traveled to Freeport, Maine and opened the Harraseeket Inn. Then we moved to Orlando and I worked at Walt Disney World. Erin, my wife, and I started a family and we thought it would be nice to raise a family in the Carolina’s. The opportunity became available with Stadium Food and Beverage and I jumped!

if you could cook for anyone in the world, who would you want to cook for? I would cook a dinner for my grandfather. To have my grandfather sit at a table with my wife and children would have been a thrill!

what would be your dream job? I have it.

when you first started cooking, did you ever imagine you would be cooking for 73,000 people? When I started cooking, I didn’t know you could fit that many people in one place!

what are the biggest challenges in cooking at an nfL Stadium? Making sure that the systems in place work the way they are supposed to. All of our foods have recipes and we have great chefs to make sure those recipes are followed. My job is to make sure everything gets to where it needs to go on time, not early, not late. Game day is about execution.

You are basically here 24/7, what and who all are you cooking for during a week? We’ll feed the players (breakfast and lunch), coaches (lunch and dinner) and Panther’s employees (lunch)during the week. What we cook is based on orders received and pars that need to be filled. We try to make everything fresh from the kitchen. Early in the week we make stocks and prepare vegetables and proteins that will be used in recipes. Mid week we start assembling some recipes for finished products. At the end of the week we will begin to cook and distribute what we call misen place to our outlets so everything can be cooked freshly.

what things do you take in to consideration when planning the meals for the players? I work with

the strength and conditioning coach on menus to give the players options. We offer high fat, low fat and medium fat foods for the players to choose from. The players work with their own nutritionists to plan their intake for each day. We offer a fresh salad bar, sandwich bar, fruit bar and hot choices every day they eat, including fresh vegetables, lean proteins, carbohydrates, grains and health conscious beverages.

what is game day like for you and your staff? The first crew comes in at 11pm the day before. We serve our own signature BBQ with sauces, so that needs to start.

We will feed all internal orders starting with breakfast, then lunch and finish with a post game meal. We will feed our Panthers family, press box, networks, cheerleaders/mascot, visiting team, referees, media and field photographers.

In addition, we provide service for 158 Suites, 2 terrace dining areas, Suite 87, Gridiron Club, 3 markets on club level, 2 Panther Burgers stands, 1 Panthers Perk area, 2 markets on the 100 level and 500 level, 4 signature JJR’s Barbecue Shacks on both the 100 and 500 levels, 2 Carolina Nacho Companies and 5 locations were we make Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches.

After that and before clean up, we can hopefully get something to eat ourselves!

any crazy requests you have gotten from coaches and players or visiting teams? Really nothing out of ordinary. I mean they can eat a lot, but nothing crazy!

how many people does it take during the week and on game day to prepare all the food for the stadium? We start with about 100 cooks, part time and fulltime seasonal. On a game day we send out about 65-70 cooks to operate areas in the stadium for food service. We will try to keep 25-30 cooks in the kitchen for game day orders and support.

what is the most rewarding part of your job? Knowing that EVERYONE gave 100% of their effort to be as successful as we can. This is a huge undertaking and to find people willing to do it seasonally is not easy. I thank each and every one of our cooks for the efforts they put forward. Their success is my reward!

Behind the scenes at Bank of America Stadium, Chef John Morey makes sure that each game day, and even through the week, every fan, player and coach is well fed. With a staff of over 100, Chef John makes his food planning come to life in perfect precision timing.

Chef John Morey

Page 28: Roar 12.5

26 / www.panthers.com

what is your favorite part of your job? Being part of a team that is family.

what is the biggest challenge you face with feeding 73,000 fans on game day? Getting to work at 11pm the night before! But seriously, like I said before, making sure the systems in place are operating as planned so game days run smoothly.

how much food do you go through on a typical game day? We’ll smoke 3,500 pounds of pork butts for JJR’s barbecue. Smoke 2,500 pounds of beef brisket for JJR’s barbecue. Serve 500 pounds of chopped barbecue. We’ll roll 10,000 hot dogs and serve 7,000 nachos. These are just a small part of what we serve on an average game day, but those are the big numbers.

what do you typically do with all of the leftover food? I work with two local shelters to share what we have

remaining from a game.

Do you find yourself cooking at home – or when you walk away from the stadium; do you hang the apron up? I help my wife with the cooking at home. Erin’s a good cook, but I think she likes my help occasionally. My passions are my family and friends. Cooking always bring them together, so why hang up an apron when you can bring the ones you enjoy the most together?

what food item should every fan make sure and try at Bank of america Stadium? JJR’s Barbecue Shack. We developed the food to be a signature to our stadium and we are very proud of what we have accomplished. It’s a project that I had an opportunity to work on with Jon Richardson and Todd Smoots. A lot of time, effort and pride were put into this project and we hope everyone can enjoy it!

Duke EnergyYou must admit that Duke Energy’s business model is a little counterintuitive. Help customers spend LESS money and consume FEWER products? Whaaaat? Imagine if your local grocery store or car dealer took that same approach. “Hey! Welcome to Friendly Freddy’s Auto Emporium! What’s it gonna take NOT to put you in a new vehicle today?”In the electricity business, the philosophy works in a very simple, straightforward way. By helping its customers use energy more efficiently, Duke Energy can produce it more efficiently.

“This is an incredibly exciting time in our industry,” said Gianna Manes, Duke Energy’s Senior Vice President & Chief Customer Officer. “Our focus is on the consumer and we are working hard to reach out to our customer base with effective, intelligently-designed efficiency programs. For example, we consider this ‘The Year of the Light Bulb’! Our distribution of CFLs to our client base has been extremely successful.”

Hold on, Gianna. Back up a second. To us here at Bank of America Stadium, ‘CFL’ stands for ‘Canadian Football League.’ What is a CFL in your nomenclature?

“Chances are you have CFLs in your home and at the stadium already. CFL stands for ‘Compact Fluorescent Light,’ an energy-saving and longer lasting bulb. With direct mail coupons and, most recently, an online campaign that went viral, we’ve given out over 5.5 million CFLs to our customers in the two Carolinas; that’s enough energy saved to power more than 25,000 homes.”

Duke Energy is also excited about some internal changes as well. Soon, the company will expand its offices to the new “Duke Energy Center” across the street from the current South Church Street location in uptown Charlotte.

“We’ll be the primary tenant there and our fingerprints are all over that building,” Manes said. “It is one of the most environmentally beneficial skyscrapers anywhere in the world. From water to windows, lighting to insulation, every floor must adhere to strict standards. In fact, Duke Energy’s own power plants produce a by-product that National Gypsum, a local company, used in the building’s wall board!”

“The Panthers and Duke Energy make ideal corporate partners,” said Adam Deschenes, the Panthers marketing executive assigned to the account. “Duke Energy’s footprint, reputation for excellence, and customer-first philosophy mirror the principles that guide the Carolina Panthers. If you are indeed judged by the company you keep, it definitely helps us to be associated with our friends at Duke Energy.”

“We feel the same way,” Manes added. “When you think of the Carolina Panthers, you think of the vitality of this entire region. Most of our employees, and a great many of our customers, are Panthers fans. I myself am a big Panthers fan!”

Duke Energy is a large company, but it has worked hard to retain the common touch.

“We want to be easier to get in touch with than ever before, and I believe we are,” Manes said. “More of our customers are interacting with us online at www.duke-energy.com, where -- through our Online Services program -- they can get specific information about their account or order free CFLs. We are also using social media now and have Twitter feeds for outage updates (@DukeEnergyStorm), energy efficiency tips (@EnergyinBalance) and general information (@DukeEnergyNews). And we have plans to expand to other areas in an effort to further engage with customers.

So next time you flick on the light switch and watch the room come to life, remember the company that works hard to help you conserve the affordable, reliable, clean energy they create. Duke Energy, a proud sponsor of the Carolina Panthers!

“Do The Right Thing”Panthers Celebrate Kids That “Do The Right Thing”

Each year, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the Charlotte Fire Department honor students through their “Do The Right Thing” program. The students are nominated for making good decisions that reflect outstanding charitable assistance, extraordinary self-sacrifice, or exemplary attitude and behavior. The program was created in response to rising school dropout rates and increasing rates of drug abuse, violence, and gang-related crimes among the youth of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community.

In October, the fall ceremony was held at Bank of America Stadium in partnership with the Carolina Panthers. The students were greeted by Police Chief Rodney Monroe, Fire Chief Jon Hannan, and representatives from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.

Leaders from CPI Security, a proud corporate sponsor for 9 years, also attended as a show of support for the students. Carolina Panthers Jeff King and Jeff Otah attended, along with TopCats Chika and Katie. Sir Purr joined the celebration along with his friends McGruff the Crime Dog, and Blaze, the mascot of the Fire Department. As part of the celebration, the students were treated to a meet-and-greet with the players, followed by dinner and a tour of the stadium. Each honoree received an engraved plaque, an incentive prize package, and an invitation to a special ceremony held at a later date.

MiCK’S BaG:by mick mixon

Mick’s Bag: Jordan, was accepting the Ed

Block Courage Award emotional for you?

Jordan Gross: It was. Mark Shermansky of our

athletic training staff, who is kind of my go-to

guy for anything injury related, gave a heck of a

speech and it really touched me. He talked about

the journey we’ve been on since I was hurt, about

a year ago now. The award it a great honor and I

was humbled to receive it.

MB: What did you learn about yourself during

your rehabilitation process?

JG: It’s funny to say this season, but even with

the way things went and as poorly as some things

turned out, I enjoyed the year almost more than

any other. Getting football taken away from you,

being on the sidelines, really not even being able

to walk for two months after I got hurt, really lets

you know how fortunate you are when you are

healthy and playing. I really tried to keep that

feeling going, and it has helped me enjoy my

teammates and the season a lot.

MB: Word reached us that you told a very funny

story during your acceptance speech. Will you

favor us with it again?

JG: (smiling broadly) Sure. I told the audience

that they gave me the Ed Block Courage Award

because I was courageous, supposedly, in my

comeback and I said that there was a kind of

a hidden story there. Two weeks prior to me

breaking my leg, we were at Arizona to play the

Cardinals. During that game, (former Panthers

fullback) Brad Hoover went down with an injury

and he was yelling and screaming on the field

that he broke his leg and to get the trainers out

there! Well, after a short trip to the hospital it

turned out that it was just a slight ankle sprain.

Ha! So, we got on the PA system on the airplane

coming home and were letting him have it pretty

good, knowing that his injury wasn’t that severe.

Fast forward two weeks later and I’m hurt and on

the field, writhing in pain, and I told myself to hold

it together just in case I was in the same situation

as Hoov. Thankfully it was broken and I could let

out the screams.

On November 7th, at a Bank of America Stadium “Courage House” luncheon benefitting Youth Homes, Inc., Panthers starting left tackle Jordan Gross was honored with the prestigious Ed Block Courage Award, given by each NFL team to a player demonstrating valor, grace, dedication and optimism in rehabilitating an injury.

During the month of November, the Carolina Panthers continued the team’s year-round relationship with our region’s military bases with several special programs. “The team’s on-going efforts to support our nation’s military culminates in November each year. It is the team’s privilege to thank the men and women who serve our country so proudly,” said Panthers director of community relations Riley Fields.
